I'm pretty new to this rooting for Android, I recently got my Incredible.. I used unrevoked to root my incredible. I did it normally like USB debugging and all that. Soon as it started to root it, the phone rebooted itself like it was supposed too, got to the HTC Incredible screen (the first screen on the boot up) and black screen and white bars on the sides. Now I got this phone like November 27th.. and I'm pretty postive my screen is an SLCD? And that seems to be what the problem is with the black screen white bars.. Thing is, of course the black screen white bars stayed there, so I pulled the battery out and put it pack in. It loaded up normally and it seemed to be rooted fine. It had the Superuser (ninja). And everything was normal. I downloaded ROM Manager and then downloaded the Flash ClockWorkMod Recovery, and then I clicked on Cynagen Mod and went down to Google apps. Downloaded it, installed it, then it asked to reboot. ALL OF WHAT I JUST DID, (followed from The Start to Finish Guide to Rooting Your Android Phone, I con't post links yet) .. So as it rebooted it got the HTC Incredible screen (the first screen on the boot up) and it did the black screen white bars. I removed the battery either twice or three times.. And still nothing, I THEN FOLLWED THIS Incredibleforum dot com (I rooted and now I only see a black screen with white bars in recovery.) and went to the Hboot menu and went down to recovery and selected it. It rebooted and still black screen white bars at the HTC Incredible screen. I then tried his other method and went to download that file and went to unrevoked and did the custom recovery and put recovery in the file and plugged my phone in. ( He actually said to like check USB debugging, which I couldnt actually do because I couldnt get to my menu..) So then after plugging it in and showing the orange light for charging. It did nothing other then charge. I turned it on ( I'm pretty sure, it might have turned on by itself) and it worked. It got the menu screen. And everything was the same. ROM Manager was still there, same with superuser. And the 3 game apps that I downloaded before I rebooted for Google Apps. I haven't found Google Apps, I'm not really sure where Google Apps would be anyways.. But what I'm getting at here is, What actually happened????? Why those white bars?? And will this happen everytime I have to reboot? If someone could just give me their best answer or an explanation It would really help. I'm new to this stuff.. But I'm getting nervous with this black screen thing white bars.. and I'm debating wether to just unroot..(how easy is unrooting?).. But my phone is fine now, I haven't tried like downloading anything but everything seems to be working fine.. Where could I find Google Apps? And which ROM? Cynagen Mod Or Bugless Beast.. Please Help
You have an slcd screen. Your recovery is for smiled. Use unrevocks recovery for slcd screens. As I have read you need that one for recovery to work properly. I don't have an slcd so I don't know to much about that end
Just cruise the forums there is tons of info out there.

I had similar issues, and poster above is correct... I was able to flash a modified clockwork recovery to get it working with slcd...but I'm halfway afraid to try any ROM Manager abilities due to the different recovery :>
Just flash the modified Clockwork- very simple and works perfectly. I have the zip if you want it.
Ok cool can I have the zip file? And would I have to like uninstall anything in order to use revoked again?... and just a quick question.. 'recovery' is basically _______?
P.S. Whats like rebooting into recovery

You don't need to uninstall anything from your phone obviously, but I'd uninstall any unrEVOKed stuff from your computer before you do the new version. Recovery is basically the tool that lets you modify the phone. You go there to do nandroid backups and restores, and to flash zips. Let me know if you need instructions on how to apply the fix.
Yeah I'm new to this rooting stuff so if you could just give me a few instructions it'd be really helpful. thanks

1. Mount your phone as disk drive (I'm assuming you know how to do that, if not, lemme know)
2. Move the file to the root of your sd card (not in any folders) and make sure you don't re-name it at all.
3. Disconnect your phone, wait for the card to format, and then yank your battery.
4. Put the battery back in, hold Volume Down+Power.
5. You'll see your bootloader and it will find the file automatically, let it install it.
6. Once it's done, yank your battery again and repeat Step 4.
7. This time, choose not to install it, and instead choose Recovery- should load up Clockwork just fine. Easiest way to access Clockwork in the future is thru ROM Manager- there's an option to boot into recovery.
PS. might wanna check your clockwork version first thru ROM Manager- my version is 2.5.0.5 and I'm not sure if Koush has included the SLCD fix in any of the newer versions, so I'd make sure you have that version before doing this.
From what I gather, the black screen and white bars is the ClockworkMod recovery that you booted into. It works fine, but the SLCD is incompatible with the current ROM Manager ClockworkMod (I have it too, ADB works when it's running). So the display is the only thing messed up.
I'd love to get ClockworkMod to work correctly though. Anyone know how I can flash the recovery to Amon Ra, or get ClockworkMod working? I have a mod .zip file for Clockwork, but I'm unsure on how to use it.
Edit... responded too late. Thanks for the advice!

Didn't see it at the time. I'm still ungodly slow at typing on this, haha.
Do you have any advice on flashing with CyanogenMod? I read the wiki and it talked about updating a radio, but there were several options. What should I be looking for?
I'm kinda terrified trying it with these new SLCD phones, and any help would be greatly appreciated!

Sorry, I haven't found a ROM I like as much as stock Sense, so I just use that, but with my own mods. shipped-roms.com is a nice website.. Otherwise, almost any Android forum site will have a CM section since it's so popular..

First off, thanks for all the help so far, this site is the best!
I just rooted my Evo using the unrevoked3. Had a little bit of trouble, nothing major, and overall it was a success. I also installed ROM Manager and Titanium Backup, based on suggestions found here.
The problem is, I'm not quite getting how to flash the roms... I downloaded one through ROM manager, and it seemed to work, but I didn't notice a single thing different. I tried to install CyanogenMod, and it downloaded, but it would always fail during the install.
I tried downloading on my computer, then moving the .zip file to my sdcard. Then I select "install rom from sdcard" and everything seems to go ok, I end up having to go into recovery and "rollback" my phone to the stock rom, because twice now I've almost bricked my phone.
Really, what I'm wanting is a setup like that "Kuma Style" one (without the animal), and a different bootscreen. I have spent a lot of time searching around, and it seems simple enough, I just seem to be missing some integral part of the proccess.....
Any help is appreciated!

I am not familiar with Unrevoked, but just running unrevoked doesn't completely root your phone. You need to do the second parts of rooting which unlocks nand.
Ah, so there is more to do. Maybe that's the problem then.... *off in search of how to unlock nand

Unlocking nand just unlocks something so that you can save full image backups. That wouldn't lead to your phone not installing a ROM right, it's just something you'll want just in case things go wrong. So still finish the root and get nand. But that's not what you're missing here.
Possible error: Did you wipe settings &factory reset and wipe cache in ClockworkMod before flashing the ROM? I think that could lead to some problems.
Try flashing the alternative Amon Ra recovery through rom manager (will state that rom manager won't be fully functional unless clockworkmod is installed) and loading the roms onto the sd card then reboot into recovery. Amon Ra seems to work better imo than clockworkmod. When you're talking about something like "kuma style," those are themes that are usually flashable in recovery also. The boot animation could alse be flashable in recovery but if not, there are instructions on how to adb push custom ones onto your phone.

just fyi, the latest unrevoked (3.21) unlocks nand so u dont need to do it.

Gah! So I downloaded the enamored theme, moved it to the sd card, then went to ROM Manager and selected "Reboot into Recovery"and selected the enamored.zip. It said the install was a success, but when I rebooted, the phone stuck on the bootanimation. I tried restarting a couple times, but it always gets stuck in the same place.
I booted into recovery (if thats waht you call the hold the volume button down while pushing the power button trick), and selected recover, then nandroid, then a time under yesterdays date. Phone recovered fine.
WtH am I doing wrong? I realize I am way out of my league, but I'm not completely retarded. Again, GAH!
Are u wiping data and cache when flashing a ROM? I have been stuck at the CM6 boot animation when coming from a different Rom and not wiping.

When you flash a theme, it could take up to 2-5 minutes to finish. This occurs during the boot animation. I flash themes all the time and I notice it's usually around 2-3 minutes wait. Maybe faster for others but that's just been my experience. If it's over 5 minutes than there's probably something wrong with your zip file or maybe clockworkmod recovery doesn't flash it properly. Also, it could be an issue with the kernel you're using...I noticed on kingklick cfs #10, I was stuck on boot animation for about 7 minutes and so I reverted back to the stock kernel and the theme was applied within 3 minutes.
ok, apparently I've been missing that step...
where do I do that again?

I waited a good long time. Am I at least headed in the right direction? Sorry to sound whiny, it's just that there's a few little things I want to do, and I'm intimidated as hell by actually doing any command line, so I'm hoping to avoid that- aka riding someone else's coattails
First, which rom are you using and is it stock or custom kernel? Are you using clockworkmod recovery? Try flashing the alternative amon ra recovery in rom manager then boot into recovery and apply your selected theme.
if you are using a stock rom it must say stock 2.2 deodexed
if it is not a deodexed rom.. of any kind.. then themes will say they flashed but they will either brick your phone or not work at all.
and stop using clockwork.... just use amon ra

I could be way off here, but I've seen some people who rooted using unrevoked, and run into trouble flashing things (or maybe I'm thinking of trouble with terminal commands) and it turned out they couldn't find flash_image anywhere in there SD card, Which should be installed (someone please correct me if I'm wrong).
I saw a lot of reports of this in chainsDDs superuser thread, if I remember correctly. They had to install flash_image.img (which is a file available on toasts part 2 root tutorial)
I obviously could be wrong about this, I've never used unrevoked, I rooted via toast, and his method included everything.
@ V_lestat
Thanks for the heads up about themes having the ability to brick your phone if not deodexed, I never knew that. I flash roms and kernels a lotbut never messed with themes much.
At OP, have a look at virus Rom thread. It's a great ROM, and he has built some different themes to go with it. Beautiful stuff, great ROM, great thread.
Good luck

See, some people say use clockwork, some people say Amon.
I looked around a lot beforehand, and people kept saying to use unrevoked, so I did. Now people say I should have used Toast?
Thanks for everybodies help so far, I am reading everything and taking it all in.
I Don't Mean to add any Confusion to your situation. I am new to this also.. I went with unrevoked also and when I booted into recovery with clockwork mod. I did a nand back up first to make sure if anything went wrong I could just boot back into recovery and load my backup. Then I wiped my Data & Davlick Cache all of the caches. Then I installed my Rom and it worked like a charm. I will add it did take about 5 to 7 mins to boot only on the first time though. I hope that helps some as to the process and what to do first don't give up XDA rocks with the smartest mind on the planet.

If you are using ROM Manager to "install zip from card" it presents you with a dialog with two unchecked check boxes. One of them is "wipe data + cache". make sure you check it before hitting ok on that dialog.
If you are manually booting into recovery then in the recovery choices you will see one that says wipe data and one thats says wipe davlik cache. first do a nandroid back up then wipe those data and davlik then install the rom. By the way are you just installing a theme or a full rom that might be the issue i am just wondering maybe a senior member can help on wether you can install a theme over a rooted stock theme or not?
Success!
I went into ROM Manager, backed up current ROM, went into recovery manually, wiped the cache, then installed from zip, and it worked! I tried a cool theme I found, and I like it, but it seemed old. I just installed fresh, and the enamored theme, and all is working great!
A couple more questions,
1) how do I get my contacts back?
2) How do I get my apps back onto my phone? I have them backed up on appbrain, but I haven't been able to find how to get them back to the phone.
So far, I've tried a couple of ROM's (and/or themes) and I've ended up flashing back to my own "safe" one, until I figure these two things out.
A tremendous thanks to everyones help! I seriously couldn't have done it without you guys
Edit; Oh yeah, one other thing. How do I delete the other nand backups? There's like 5, and I need to free up some memory. I tried going in and selecting one to see if it gave me the option to delete, but I didn't see anywhere that it did.... Got it. Search feature to the rescue
This is my first post and I was wondering if anyone can help.
I have an incredible, 2.2, rooted, with Rom Manager. I flashed the lastest recovery through Rom Manager but when I try to boot into recovery the screen stays black with a thin white line on both sides. I had some backups from another Dinc I had and took a chance at a restore from one of my older Roms. Although the screen stayed black it did load the backup so my recovery appears to be working fine only I can't see it.
Doing this before I am scared if I load a bad rom or something and get locked up I won't be able to see the recovery to restore my backups. I have tried older recoveries through Rom Manager with the same problem however when I flash RA_GNM Recovery v1.7.6 it works perfectly. Only problem is Rom Manager won't use that.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

From what you're describing, your phone has a slcd screen, not amoled. As such, you're going to have a few issues here and there with recoveries as well as ROMS (due to your hardware not being supported by the included kernel). Search the forums for slcd and you'll see suitable workarounds for this.
To see what screen you have... Menu > Settings > About Phone > Hardware Version. If yours is 003, you have a SLCD screen.

Just incase anyone is having this problem I did find a site with a fix. Download the file, change the name and flash through hboot. It has worked for me and now I can get into recovery. Here is the link:
**Sorry the site wouldn't allow me to post the link***
Only problems I have now and I am hoping someone can help is that I can't seem to install any custom roms that don't have sense. When installing MIUI or CyanogenMod, etc I get locked up on the white HTC screen.
Anyone know a solution?
http://www.incredibleforum.com/foru...nly-see-black-screen-white-bars-recovery.html
That has the custom recovery you need for an slcd screen. I used that exact dl link to get the image. Then i used the unrevoked 3.21 tool to set it to flash a custom recovery then let the tool run. All went flawlessly
*Edit sorry i didn't see you fixed it. As far as cyanogen mod goes, I know it doesn't work with slcd screened incs because we have different display drivers. I believe that is true for all aosp roms. If you want a vanilla feel go with skyraider vanilla 3.0. It works perfectly for me
Thanks for posting that link and the help. I will keep checking to see if a solutions for slcd screens comes around so that I can install some other roms.
I just hate that I thought I upgraded my inc and as it turns out it was probably a downgrade.
To my understanding, I believe all roms work except aosp roms. I remember reading somewhere (but don't remember where) that they were working on a fix. So maybe it'll come before you know it
Koush's test #2 kernel works fine and will boot aosp on my Slcd.
Just wanted to let you know I found a way to make MIUI and cyanogen work on a slcd Dinc. I found the fix in one of the forums so I don't want to take any credit for it but it worked for me so I wanted to pass that info along to anyone else having the same issue.
I downloaded the Koush test kernel from Rom Manager, then I flashed the MIUI rom. Once flashed it gets stuck on the white HTC screen. I pull the battery, go to recovery, and then open zip from SD card. I find the Koush kernel, install, and reboot and it has worked for everything I have tried so far (MIUI and Cyanogen).
Hope that helps someone.

Really? My post above says that.

Hello all.
I have a t-mobile g2, currently S-OFF, which is sitting in hboot/fastboot right now. I will not boot past the HTC screen.
I attained root last night using this method, and it worked without problems. I then gave a few apps (terminal and shark, to be precise) superuser access. Went to sleep.
This morning, I wanted to delete some apps and change some system fonts around (wanted to use the ubuntu font instead of droidsans). deleted photobucket at amazon mp3. while trying to change the fonts, I changed permissions on the /system/ folder to 777 (chmod 777 /system/). Changing the fonts wasn't working out, so i decided to leave it alone and just reboot my device. upon reboot, it would no longer boot past the htc boot screen. It will, however, go into hboot/fastboot mode without a problem. I tried going into recovery mode and using the update.zip (e4aaacea73af.OTA_Vision_TMUS_1.22.531.8-1.1.19.531.1_release_signed.zip renamed). No luck. Also, i tried researching on the forums and using adb to try to unbrick, but adb doesn't recognize any device being plugged in. fastboot did work, though, and i wrote the original recovery.img file into the phone (although I don't know where it goes when this is done...) and now I don't know where to go next. any help?
Try wiping your data and flashing a new rom on there. Some roms have a OC kernel so I would also make sure u know what kind of kernel the rom has. If its OCed I would download o non OCed kernel. Reason being some are like OCed to the max which makes the phone not boot, and when turned off sleeping doesn't want to turn back on.

Update:
I've been doing a bit more research, and I found that it might be possible to flash a stock rom (PC10IMG.zip). I downloaded the TMOUS one provided in this thread and shortened it to PC10IMG.zip. Once I do that, I go into Hboot, and when it checks for the different nbh/zip images, it always tells me "no image"/"no image or wrong image!". HELP!!!

Which one did you download? The first few on there were pre-release ROMs. The 1.19.531.1 ROM was the release ROM originally. Most recent G2's come with 1.22 (the OTA update) pre-installed, which we do not currently have a PC10IMG.zip for. If your G2 had 1.22 (e.g., you already had wifi-calling and tethering), you won't be able to use the 1.19 PC10IMG unless you used gfree to obtain S-OFF. If you did not (i.e., you only flashed the engineering HBOOT), you should not try to flash this file (it will replace your HBOOT with the shipping version and then quit mid-flash because it sees you already have a higher version installed). Even if you did obtain S-OFF with gfree, flashing this file will cause you to lose your engineering HBOOT and root (though you will still have S-OFF, so it's easy to re-root).
As was stated earlier, the easiest/best thing to do at this point is flash a custom ROM. If you still want the stock look-and-feel, here is a pre-rooted stock G2 ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=836042. You want to flash it through ClockworkMod recovery. I'm assuming you hadn't installed this already or you would have a backup of your ROM that you could have simply restored. You can install ClockworkMod recovery through fastboot though (there is a thread in the dev section or you can search for one of the many guides on it).
Also, you will probably want to get the de-odex version of the stock ROM. If you are doing any kind of theming or UI modifications, that is usually required (or your changes will cause a bootloop). Without knowing the details of what you tried to do, I'm guessing this is what happened to you (since the stock ROM is odex'ed).

Do you mean this thread? UPDATE:
I finally figured out what I was doing. So I used fastboot to flash a clockworkmod recovery.img onto my g2. When I went to recovery, after booting into hboot, it went to the HTC screen, as it should. Guess what I got? loopboot, once again T_T. Luckily I still have the official recovery.img, and reflashed that. Did I do something wrong? Please let me know.

You entered the bootloader (white screen with green Android guys at the bottom), selected to enter recovery (using volume down and power button to select), and then was presented with an HTC logo? That means ClockworkMod recovery did not successfully flash. Did you get any errors when you used flashboot?
That's exactly what happened, and no, not at all. It said it flashed successfully. Maybe I don't have the correct version of Clockworkmod? If you could please link me to a good one, that would be great.
UPDATE!!
So I found an official clockworkmod 2.5.1.2, and now when I boot into recovery, it shows the HTC logo and then goes to clockworkmod. This is amazing. Thank you guys for all your help, I have learned something new today.
Now, can someone explain the difference between odexed and deodexed? please? lol.

Looks like I cried victory too quickly. While I do get the menu for clockworkmod (every time I boot, for that matter), every time I issue a command, such as reboot now, or install from SDcard, and even advanced, the screen goes black. GRRR, WHAT AM I DOING WRONG? I've been at this since about 1 today T_T
Just wanted to say that I'm the biggest noob on the planet. While I did upgrade to cwm 3.0.0.5, i didn't know it allowed the use of the main controls. I got my phone up and running now. Thank you for all the help. Good night :]
Ok so I'm an extreme noob with roms and themes. I recently rooted my wifes evo 4G and she wants a rom and theme on it and I have no clue what im doing. So I'm hoping this post will point me in the right direction. I rooted the phone per this exact method succesfully here. I also have a screenshot of the software versions if that helps. If there is anything else i can provide to further help my quest please let me know.
easy stuff
to change the ROM on the EVO is easy you can download ROM Manager from the market and it will give you and option of downloading custom roms for your device, choose one and rom manager will do the rest to include backing up your current rom. Themes are to easy also again on the Market download ADW and you can browse thru many themes and again once you find one you like it will do install it for you. I hope this helps.
Bulldog's Right
ROM Manager is the easiest way to play around with ROMS. (Have to pay up for the Premium version for the good stuff, though.)
I've use Swagged Out Stock and it's good.

Rom manager +evo = waste of time root your phone flash amon RA recovery and use it to install roms unless you want to spend all your time trying to get your phone working again then by all means use rom manager and cwm, cwm doesn't wipe properly causing serious issues when you boot into the rom, everything from force closes to stuff just plain not working

Per your post if you are s-on(unlocked) and not s-off I'd advise following captain throwbacks guide to downgrade your hboot and attain s-off, if you are s-off search for and locate amon RA recovery in pc36img.zip format place it on SD card and let it search for and update your recovery by pressing volume+ once it finds the PC36IMG.zip , once you have amon rRA find a rom you want to install and download it to you SD card, now boot to amonra and navigate to nandroid(backup/restore) and create a backup selecting the preselcted options plus wimax(this will take some time between 5 and 30 mins)back to the main menu and navigation to the wipe menu, select and wipe each option except battery stats and SD card atleast once (I do each 3x personally just to make sure they are thoroughly wiped) now back out to the main menu and select install from SD card, navigate to your ROM zip wherever you placed it if you downloaded it from the phone itself it will most likely be in the folder named download, select the zip and then install it, let it update may take a few mins to complete depending on the roms size now navigate back to the main menu and reboot you phone you now have a custom rom, to install a theme you will need to find one specific to the rom you choose wipe only cache and dalvik.cache install the theme zip and reboot and you're now themed.

thank you thank you thank you so pleased with the answers this helps a ton. just one question what is "s-on/s-off"?
power off phone. Then power on by holding volume down while pushing power button. That takes you to hboot. Hboot will show your status. If you want s-off (and believe me, you do), follow the link provided above.
Follow everything EVIL-KONCEPT has said,....its all true. And stay away from ROMmanager and CWM, unless you wanna spend all your days trying to figure out why the ROMs you flash are all Fd up. CWM doesn't work worth a damn on Evo. Use amonRA.
Welcome, and good luck. Great community, all will help.

so i did this and already have a problem. i downloaded the amon ra and it was named PC36IMG.zip already so i put it in the root of the phone and when i booted to bootloader it says "main version is older!" then "update fail" any ideas how to get amon ra on this phone?
if it says main version is older, then it's trying to read a radio image. Do you have 2 PC36Imgs on root of SD?
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
no only one pc36img. im trying to unroot atm.
Like everyone else I use AmonRa to flash roms etc. rom manager is good for a noob thats how I started off, but Know clockwork is not that good, all i can say is read, read, read, and when you think u got it read it again, its really not that hard.
lol yeah i know that that is what i been doing for what seems like ever. i have yet to be able to find anything that talks about my issue and i was unable to return the phone to stock it went to the progress bar got to 14% "checking header" and stayed there for an indefinite amount of time. so I am pretty confused and i guess ill try the rom manager route and see how that goes.

If you were able to use the HTCDev.com method from that thread to unlock the bootloader, you should be able to easily flash a custom recovery (RA-supersonic). I can walk you through the steps to do that. Once that part is done, flashing a new ROM is easy.
Avoid ROM Manager and CWM recovery.
If you can report back what it says on the HBOOT (Bootloader) screen, it would be helpful, just so we can confirm that you are only UNLOCKED and S-ON, not S-OFF (it makes a slight difference).
well per the OP i have an unlocked evo per the htc website and this thread and the hboot screen says unlocked s-on. my issue is i am unable to flash amon ra recovery because when i do it says main version is older and i named it correctly checked re-checked and re-re-checked a thousand + times. i dont have another pc36img.zip anywere in the root of the sd or even on it for that matter. and i tried to return it to stock and it freezes at checking header. i will try whatever you guys want me to with the exception to rom manager. too many people advise on not useing it for me to risk it. anything else? i take a pic of the hboot screen if you need. and i have a pic attached to the OP of the system settings.
The main thing you wanna get is s-off, or generally you're s-ol... So you did use revolutionary, generated the key, talked to your main OS, and it said you were good? You'll know when you volume down and power on your phone, it'll say revolutionary s-off... It's all downhill from there... Are you saying your phone won't boot at all? Maybe I'm missing something, just trying to help;-)
Edit, I agree vvvvvvvv although sometimes things don't always go so well and even seasoned people as well as noobs get stuck and then ya kinda have to take it step by step... Hopefully he got it figured out but kinda hard to tell from what I read;-)
Do whatever captain_throwback says. He knows all.

Sorry for all the confusion. Let me try to explain it better. I went to htcdev and did the whole process to unlock the phone. The thread I used to unlock had me put cwm recovery on the phone. That was fine until my wife wanted a diff rom and theme on her phone. So I got told to flash amon-ra recovery. The process for flashing amon-ra was to go to the amon-ra thread and download supersonic, then rename it exactly "PC36IMG.ZIP" so I did that. I checked md5 made sure it wasn't pc36img.zip.zip made sure there wasn't a copy in the root and even in the whole sd card. Now I still get an error when I flash amon-ra. It says "main version is older!" Then "update failed." I have the 2.18 hboot 2.3.5 android. And if there is any other info I can give to get assistance I would appreciate it. O yeah forgot, I also tried to return it to stock via the .exe file and it just freezes on checking header so I can't even start all over from stock :-( I hope that clarefied everything.
Hello, Wondering if anyone here could help out. I recently went from MIUI US ICS rom to CM9 and love the latest build of CM9. I had not tried a backup of the rom after flashing to CM9, but noticed that Rom Manager updated at play.google.com and then I decided maybe I should make a backup of CM9 sine it was shaping up pretty nicely as I've been setting up apps, etc.
Well, I can't get into recovery. I can boot into the bootloader and it shows Revolutionary as the boot loader and I can get into Fastboot but if I toggle down to recovery and press the power button it just jumps back to the bootlloader screen. I can't get past this.
I'm tempted to put a different recovery on here now as the rom manager didn't work out even though it came stock on my CM9.
But before I risk bricking my phone, I was hoping someone here could back me up a bit and give me some input. I really don't know that much about this.. I can root phones, install recoveries, etc., but if something goes wrong I'm not knowledgeable enough to actually understand what went wrong and how to fix. I am guessing that recovery is not actually installed here and that Revolutaionary (what I used long ago to get root) wasn't planned to be the boot here.
Help please anyone!!!!!

It's been a while since I've done someting like that. By this you mean place a recovery package on the zip card, press the power button at the bootloader, then let the phone install the recovery when it runs thru the fastboot screen?
If yes, great, I remember that, but which recovery should I download? And what about rom manager on CM9? Does it care which recovery is installed?
I appreciate the knowledge here. IT sure is appreciated when things go wrong for folks like myself!
Oh, I should point out that I can stil boot into the phone and use it. The whole issue is limited to getting into recovery to create and/or restore backups of the rom.

1st off, I should shun you for being corrupt with CWM, but I'll help ya out.
Use the search bar and type in "Smelkus recovery" find a themed recovery zip you like and rename it "PC36IMG.zip" and place on the root of your SD card (in no folders) boot to boot loader and let it search, press volume up to update recovery and boom! You have new, better recovery.
As for flashing CM9, check out Jmzs CM9 nightlies. Its better and (supposedly) almost has Wimax working. Once you flash an Amon Ra based recovery, CWM becomes basically useless. So ditch it for the good of everyone. ENJOY
EDIT: Because I'm NICE, here's the link.

Wow, much nicer recovery than any I've used. Thank you for that! I didn't actually intend to put on CWM, but now I'll make it a point to avoid . I did search for JMZS CM9 nightlies. Was going to try it but not getting any hits to lead me where I think you are leading. WOld I find JMZS nightlies here at xda or outside? I did a google search and got nothing other than your post to me above.
Anyhow, thanks for the help folks!

Well can I pick your brain once more? I decided to update my wifes phone from MIUI to CM9. She happened to have Clockwork recovery 5.0.2.2. on the phone which I recall was put there by whatever rooting routine I used. Before installing CM9, I tried to update the recovery with Smelkus from the clockwork recovery 5.0.2.2 that's on the phone to smelkus, but when I try to flash it, the smelkus recovery just sits there "parsing" so when I bail out and go back to check, the clockwork version recovery is still there.
This phone was rooted with Revolutionary but I notice that S-ON is still active. I read that S-OFF is not necessary to install a recovery --- at least not the clockwork version that is on this phone. I'm not sure if that's causing the problem or not. Any advice?
Try this one. It should work.

Gave it a try, same result. What do you think might be going on? I wonder if I should try and flash it with the same one that's stuck in the phone first then try the others? Clueless really what's happening.

Hello... d-b-s
By chance have you seen this recovery located here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29266458
I have a spare evo that is sorta-bricked or sorta screwed, not sure which... It has a SD slot that seems to be locked out. Nothing can be read from it but I did get it working once but lost it. ANd it also doesn't boot unless I have a power plug in it, but otherwise, it works, flashes, etc.. it's got CM9 right now in it but again somewhat useless without the SD memory.... anyhow, it's been a plaything for me figureing I'll either fix it, learn or kill it. None has happened yet.. but in searching for getting a recovery installed that uses the screen hard buttons versus the volume (this rocker switch on volume is broken too), I installed this recovery and it's different than anythign else... fully menuized .. real customized, and thought I would mention it to you.
If you have a look at it, let me know what you think.

I'm familiar with twrp. I don't much care for it though. A dew tricks with smelkus is it has touch scrolling, and the bottom buttons work as up+down+back+select..
Also I might know of a fix for the SD card not being read. I'll get back to you with that.

d-b-s,
That would be fantastic if you had a clue on the SD card. I did try a FastBoot string that reset it once the first time and it worked, but somehow I lost it again. I think a corrupt or defective SD card started the whole problem and restarted it when I put it's data SD back in.
