ya u have 2 download specific files 2 ur pc b4 u r able 2 use from this site.
Anyways, there are two good guides for you to use if you want to root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833965
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834228
Read through all of these guides to get an idea.

The most popular roms I believe people are using for their G2 are:
Virtuous Sense / DZ
CyanogenMod
I'll look at those.Thx
I appreciate the response. I'll also check out Android.com 2c if they have some files that I can download to my PC for preparation of rooting my G2. Is it any specific file name/site any1 can help we with as well? Thx in Advance.
I'm a little confused about what u are asking, but if ur trying to find out what u need in preparation to root I suggest u do a lot of reading. Read those two threads about rooting posted 2 posts above me. They will tell u which files u need depending on which method u choose. I personally suggest rage but please be sure to READ everything thoroughly and also learn to use adb. Search xda for guides to use adb.

This was a big help for me when I started the whole adb and sdk process.

In the detail of the video you'll get all the link. Get the "JDK" Java.
Other good pages

This is what I wanna learn
-How to install various, cool themes.
-Rooting? Is it necessary for themes, I read something about it needed for changing the boot animation or something.
-Taking full advantage of my phone, customizing it somewhat heavily.
That's about it, thank you !
Welcome to the forums,
If you want to take full advantage of your phone you will want to root it. All the information you will need is here.
Make sure you read everything carefully and if you have any questions please search first before starting a new thread.
Once you have rooted, you will want to install a custom ROM. The best for themes in my opinion is CM7, it has a built in theme chooser that allows you to easily change the way your phone looks.
Custom bootanimations can only be installed on a rooted phone, there are loads of threads on the forum with different animations and guides about how to install them.
Thank you for your assistance and the welcoming. I can see that rooting looks like a complex thing to do. Do i need to root my phone in order to use the cm7 app/rom?
Thanks

You need to be rooted to install a custom rom, I know it can seem a bit daunting, but just read everything a couple of times and follow the instructions to the letter. Here is the link to the wiki with rooting instructions http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision. You will need to know what software version you currrently have.

It's not as painful as it looks.
It worked for me with XP Pro sp3 and some drag n drop to the cmd window.
The important part is to make sure that the files are on the root of C:\.
That's where the program looks for the files...
Good luck and happy flashing...
It's pretty simple. Just be sure to follow the instructions and don't miss any step.
Just to be sure, even though Im pretty sure I know the answer to this question, I need and thr android sdk right?

I'm not sure if SDK IS needed to downgrade and root I just followed that link that tylerlawhon posted and everything went so quick that I honestly remember.
If you search UTube, there is a couple of great vids regarding ALL you might want to know.
I remember back when I was preparing for the transition to Android, I downloaded the FULL SDK.
What a 10+ GB mistake that was.
I think the basic SDK (android-sdk_r10-windows.zip) weighs in at about 32 MBs.
I can't remember exactly what I needed it for tho.
Here is the ReadMe from that file:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to the Android SDK!
The Android SDK archive initially contains only the basic SDK tools. It does
not contain an Android platform or any third-party libraries. In fact, it
doesn't even have all the tools you need to develop an application.
In order to start developing applications, you must install the Platform-tools
and at least one version of the Android platform, using the SDK Manager.
Platform-tools contains build tools that are periodically updated to support new
features in the Android platform (which is why they are separate from basic
SDK tools), including adb, dexdump, and others.
To install Platform-tools, Android platforms and other add-ons, you must
have an Internet connection, so if you plan to use the SDK while
offline, please make sure to download the necessary components while online.
To start the SDK Manager, please execute the program "SDK Manager.exe".
From the command-line you can also directly trigger an update by
executing:
tools\android.bat update sdk
For more information, please consult the Android web site at
http://developer.android.com/sdk/
Hope that helps.
Wow dude you saved my life. I checked YouTube and realized I didn't need anything I downloaded -___-
Thank you so much!

I found a supposed "safe" list of stock apps to delete and foolishly started firing them in the bin only to find that the messaging icon had not only vanished from the home tray but the option to replace it with a new shortcut had too.
I guess one of the apps deleted was responsible for that. Can any of you boffins figure out which i need and where to get it? The dangers of rooting sigh.......
I use handicant messages so perhaps a 3rd party applications could suffice. Next time either make a nandroid backup or use titanium pro.

You would always make a backup before you uninstall lol.
But I'll look through my apps stuff and find something about it.

Thanks for replying but im sorry. Maybe im a noob. I did make a nandroid but a couple of months ago and i wanted my system the way it was the other day. Dont know how to use ftfs or how they would particularly apply here. If i was to extract a copy of the current system id still be missing the messaging app wouldnt i? Is there not simpler apk method maybe or something that doesnt involve code/commands.
Just go on the market and download go sms or handcent

If you don't know where to start, don't bother lol. I looked into it as well. The android kitchen doesn't do anything expect add busybox root deodex and stuff. It doesn't turn you into a dev overnight lol. I just decided to enjoy what other devs have made

Porting a rom is a whole different story than getting an RUU for the evo 4g and starting there.

Google is your friend. There's a lot out there.
I myself developed ROMs for myself. It really depends what you are looking to do. You can always modify a stock ROM or Port another ROM. they all require a lot of work, but they are a lot of flashable tweaks that you can just drop into you ROM and have the experience. You don't have to write your own code. Not too many ROM dev even write codes. They just modify and edit. Good Luck and always try Google.

Are you here scrosler? I have been looking for help on how to build a rom for the months. I have pmed over a dozen developers and none would help. I would love some help. Even if it is only a point to a web site with detailed info. Like i said i got the kitchen installed was able to decompile an already complete rom and looked around and recompiled it but the whole updater script i know nothing about and what parts of the rom does what. I would love to make my own rom but have no idea where to go. I have checked out the android development section here on xda but honestly i need a little more beginner than i have seen. I guess the first step would be how to compile it correctly do it will run and how to do this do it will not brick my phone. Would really love any help i can get.
