Hi, I was wondering if there was any way to program any keys (such as ijkl or wsad) to act as arrow keys because I wanted to play a flash game (http://www.driftgame.com.au/) and it required the arrow keys to be held down to drive, and the track pad doesn't to a good job. I feel this will impose future problems for any flash based games. Any help appreciated!

If you use swype keyboard, start on the swype tips key (bottom left corner), and slide your finger to the ABC key to the right. An arrow keyboard will open.
Thanks! But how would I bring up the arrow keys in the game mentioned in my post ?

There are none. You just use the optical trackpad instead.
Thanks for the prompt reply, but I am very clumsy and wonder if there is a keyboard out there I could load to get cursor keys back?
All the best,
Sam.
Use this:

You can map the volume button to move cursor
smarter keyboard pro allows you to have the keyboard arrows
in fact it's so good that when using the normal keyboard, you can just swipe in an direction to have the arrow keys displayed
also provides you with the stock android keyboard
would recommend
is there another keyboard that has arrows like the one on the bottom of the stock 2.2 keyboard? i like the stock keyboard in all but its not like the multitouch droid keyboard. i wish someone could put those arrows on that keyboard
Swype has a special editing keyboard, by swyping from the Swype key to the SYM key.
Alternatively, there's a keyboard called Full Keyboard in the market. It's not great for day-to-day typing, and doesn't have a horizontal mode, but it has all of the editing keys you could want (arrows, del, insert, etc.) as well as Ctrl+*letter* keys, making it great for SSH sessions in ConnectBot.
I've been using the demo of Smart Keyboard, available in the Market. You tap the number key twice and it brings up a screen with arrows, a delete key, Tab and and Enter key. Then you switch back by hitting the ABC key. The skin I'm using is the iPhone skin. It has small spaces between the keys. It works for me.
I really like SwiftKey the best. It not only guesses the words you're typing, but also the next word. Works really well, but no arrows.
I also found a useful little app that allows you to have a virtual trackball, called Virtual Trackball. It's useful for moving around when you're trying to edit text. It also allows for a virtual d-pad. It's in the Market and costs .99 Euro. I think it's worth it. The developer is very responsive and is adding more features. I used to have trouble with it going away when running a lot of apps, but the new update seems to have made it persist better. If it disappears, you just hold on the home key to bring up recent apps and turn it on again.
Just got a G2 and fired up addictinggames.com to test the flash out. Then I realized that there are no arrow keys to control the games. Seems like a waste to have 2.2 out of the box and not be able to use all the features. Any work arounds?

On that note I could have done without the programmable quick keys that you can't program anything useful for.

Does the optical pad do directional control?
Yeah the trackpad works as directional, but its no good for games where you have to hold down a particular direction.
The G1 doesn't have any arrow keys, neither does the Nexus One or the Vibrant. What makes you think a phone comes with arrow keys?
Err most qwerty phones do have arrow keys. Also this is one of the few full flash supporting ones. You'd expect arrow keys. I was surprised.
No worries. PM me a list of games you want to play and I'll add them to my "Flash Game Packs" (I'm optimizing flash games for on screen controls)
I'm sure someone somewhere has written a small app that would allow you to assign directional keys to any keys on your keypad.
maybe assign IJKL as a D-pad while holding down shift and alt at the same time. so you could use your left hand to activate it and right hand to move. lol
any updates?
coming from a lg eve is really upsetting not to have arrow keys!
Look through the forums for hardware button remapping. It is fairly simple.
Okay this is most likely a noob question but do I really have to hold the alt key the entire time to type numbers or is there another way kind of like a caps lock but for the alt key ? Holding it while typing numbers is a pain in the butt lol . Ty

Hit it two times in a row and it will lock into "alt" then hit it once to get out.
Custom keys D-Pad
Hi!
I would like to know, if it's possible to make the custom keys act like directional keys??
Is there a way to assign "move cursor left" to the 1.custom key, and "right" to the 2. ....and maybe SHIFT+1.custom is "cursor up" , SHIFT+2.custom is "cursor down"???
I think it would be very useful, because i don't need any app to launch one-click, but the directional pad is missing! The touchpad is great, but not the best for me
There is an app to button remap. Either use the search,... or there is a link in the 1st post of the MIUI thread in the Development section

The LG G2, had the most wonderful left and right cursor arrow keys that showed up in the row of the home button (front touch buttons they were called on the G2) anytime you launched a keyboard to type.
But this feature seems omitted on the G3..?? No please say it aint so!
How do I get those back?
Not sure if this is what you are looking for since I never owned the G2. When keyboard is up, long press on space bar. This brings up your left and right cursors.

Thanks, but no that's not it. On the G2 there are permanent cursor keys on the far left and right of the front home buttons. Just to the left and right of the Back button and Recent Apps button. They only show up with a keyboard is displayed.
Anyone know how to get these on the G3?

These arrows. Does anyone know how to get these arrows on the g3?
See them at the bottom left and right of the screen on the nav bar.
Please help!
Side load the G2 keyboard. The G3 one doesn't have the arrows so you will need another one

Great suggestion Pilz. Two questions:
1) Are you sure functionality of the left/ right cursor keys on the Nav Bar are built into the LG keyboard? I only ask because those keys show up even when the LG Keyboard isn't being used. I usually use TouchPal or SwiftKey.
2) I attempted to side load the G2 apk be backing up the app using ES Files Explorer. When I tried to install it on the G3 it said not insatlled. Do I do this by simply opening the apk file or do I have to do something with the .odex and .systag files? BTW - I'm not rooted yet.
3) Also when I tried to install the G2 keyboard apk, it said it was going to UPDATE the G3 LG Keyboard. Know of a way to have it load as secondary version of the app instead of replace it?
Thank you so much!
If you want to sideload the G2 keyboard you may need root to move the odex and or lib files into the appropriate folders. Some apps work without this, but since it's a system app you will more then likely need root. I don't like the G3's keyboard (I use the google one with the material overlay). Here is a screenshot of my G3 keyboard for reference it doesn't have the arrows on the bottom. The good news is that if you hold the space bar then you can move the cursor as seen below. I hope this helps.
I think you are correct about needing to be rooted to move the odex files. I'll get to that later.
As a workaround I downloaded the new Google keyboard also. I was wondering though how you got the arrow keys for the cursor. Holding down the space bar for me prompts the keyboard change menu to select a different keyboard all together...??

Great tip about holding down the spacebar ! Then I can slide left or right to move the cursor for edits !
That isn't working for me..? What version are you using? I thought I downloaded the latest L version. Mine prompts a keyboard change.

It's only on the LG keyboard which I don't use. I only use the google one I posted the screenshots of the LG one for the other member to show him the feature.
