I bought my car about 4 years ago used. I noticed it had this "accessory" mounted on the dash. It has two buttons. One looks like a pic of a phone handset and the other looks like a grid. I thought that it might be a bluetooth deal, but I've scanned for devices hundreds of times with many phones and have never discovered it. There's a blue led that flashes when the vehicle is off. If someone can help it wild be appreciated.

A tumor!!!!!! Nah I'm just kidding, it might be a place for a car phone? I agree with the user above, taking pics always helps
What kind of car is it ford, chevy, bmw,VW, it almost looks like a old school car phone but at the same time looks like it might have been an add on as well

It's definitely an add on. It's a2004 nissan quest van. When I press and hold the top button it blinks for about 30 seconds then goes off like it's in"discover"mode. It's bothered me for years.

Go to the dealership and ask them!
It's an aftermarket bluetooth handsfree kit.
I asked the dealership where I got the car and they didn't know.
...then why can't I see it in my "devices" when I scan?
If it is a handsfree deal I wanna use it!

I've pulled the actual unit off and looked on the back and there are no numbers or markings NOTHING! haha It's insane. I've tried using Google Goggles on my Vibrant and it doesn't match any pics up either. I think I might take it to like a car audio or Best Buy and see what they think.

I can tell you exactly what it is, but you're not gonna liek it...
It's a lojack antitheft device. Basically, if you pay a yearly/monthly fee, they do something that enables then to track stolen vehicles (think on-star but less useful). The fact that you can press the button and not have cops all over you means that it 'prolly expired and in no longer monitored.

Not likely but just for completeness, Homelink Remote for garage door. Shoud be in mirror, if so equiipped. No idea what this would do for it.

I know this doesn't help for a Desktop Dock but another post here had a great idea for a car dock (mount). It is very functional for the car and I am glad I did it. I used Tasker to set some variables so the phone "Docks" when it is in this mount. I am attaching some pictures of how it looks. The original thread is HERE.
Decent Desktop Dock

Good "dock" with an extra battery and charger.. granted with the usb on top, there will be no true desktop dock.
Check out Samsung's website. They have a perfect one that sits on it's side. Its forever on back order however...

The desktop home app is in landscape. The intended docking position is on its side as demoed by the Galaxy S advert. I even made a dock with internal amp and speakers that holds the phone on it's left side.
Note: Just making an informative statement. Read with a positively reinforcing internal voice for better results.
I just received a "Backorder Update" from Samsung regarding that charger/dock/cradle. It's available when I go to the page now.

Don't recommend the universal docks. They fit weird.

The Google Car Home is infinity better than the Samsung one. It is also specifically a 2.2 app.
I'm just using 2 thick rubber bands to hold my phone on the sun visor. Vlingo works much better at that distance and I can clearly see the map.

This desk dock SUCKS!
After many months of waiting on the back order, the desk top cradle arrived today, and...
It's simply awful.
While docked, you're stuck with five icons (Alarm, Daily Briefing, Gallery, Music and Voice Search). They are not customizable and I rarely use any of them. Samsung thought it sufficient to only allow customization with the clock (you can turn it off or get an analog or digital version--- WOW!) You can also change the city and the Celsius/Fahrenheit in Accuweather. My experience has been that Accuweather is wildly inaccurate. Totally useless...
As if that wasn't bad enough, Samsung, in their infinite wisdom, designed the dock so the volume controls and the headphone jack port are blocked. Finally, you can't access contacts or make calls while docked. That's right, you can't use your phone to make a call. To place a call, you have to first exit the landscape mode by pressing the home button and you're then in your home screen. But of course, at this point, everything is sideways if the phone is still docked. Pretty ridiculous if you ask me. I contemplated returning the dock for a refund, but the return policy included in the packaging states that full refunds will only be given for unopened items. Samsung states they will make partial refunds (at their sole discretion) based on the condition of the dock, accompanying literature and the packaging.
Learn from my mistake-- This dock is a huge waste of money. I've had it with Samsung. The delays and poor quality of the dock, the delays with FROYO and overall poor customer service means I'll be looking to purchase my next phone from another manufacturer.
FINALLY, a suction cup that I'll NEVER have to worry about. This thing kicks tail.
A little bulky, but hey, I'm in a car, and I aint trying to put anything in my pocket.

Yes. Verizon's. Apologies, I believe I had said "HTC mount" earlier. It's the one sold straight from vzw.
Still loving it. Hope they make one that will fit the extended battery, some day.
The car mount is great, got mine directly from Verizon corporate store. It comes with attachments to mount it to the windshield or the dash, but beware that the phone must be removed from most OEM cases (i have a body glove and a double case) as the phone is otherwise to bulky to fit in the dock.

Love the car dock. Wish it had an audio out, but most don't. The only grip I have, is with the tbolt. When i plug an aux cable from the phone to my radio, and I get a call, the mic will not work. I'm assuming the phone thinks it's a headset with a mic. My Vibrant worked with the aux cable plugged in, except for a few OC kernels. Anybody know if this can be changed? like a toggle? Searched the market for a mic toggle app, but got nothing.
I used mine for the first time yesterday.. Phone was the DEVIL to get out or of the mount. and it vibrates alot.

Known issue, no fixes......yet. Though SOMEone said they could get their iphone ear buds to work(mic on phone works when buds plugged in)
Suggestion, at bestbuy, there is a mic that you attach to the the phone and can be attached to another 3.5mm aux in of your car. I have it and it works well. Its a generic dynex mic.

What I found after like a week, and maybe I am just not too observant, but the top clip flips up, and gets completely out of the way. Then in pops in and out much much easier. I agree though it does vibrate a bit. Could be due to the weight of the device?

+1 I'm VERY disappointed with how much it vibrates. and I'm in a brand new truck.
My OG droid car mount didn't vibrate at all.
I posted a review on this a week or two after the phone came out.
The usb wears down after using it a bit and it comes out fairly easily.
I rarely get vibration and I'm in a 2003 Grand Cherokee...dont think its a matter of how new or old your vehicle is...more than likely its a matter of how your vehicles suspension is designed.
Suction cup is solid, havent had it fall off yet.
It is a bit bulky and its too bad it wont work with any cases or an extended battery.
I got a 6' cable from monoprice and ran it behind the dash so it looks fairly clean.
Just wish you could modify the stock car panel with a couple more items but oh well, in due time i suppose. *Just found a download for google car home, nice customization, looks just like the stock and it seems to be working fairly well. It's a little laggy when adding non-car shortcuts to the screen.*
But up to date, I love it, use it almost every day.
The car dock kicks ass, too bad google maps sucks. I drive from NY to Philadelphia occasionally and use Garmin. After I got the dock I thought hey I don't need Garmin I'll just use the phone. Well a trip that takes me 2.5 hours ended up being a 3.5 hour trip because of google maps retarded routing..... /rant over

I just got jvc car stereo http://www.bestbuy.com/site/JVC+-+5...back/4005163.p?id=1218447374174&skuId=4005163 from best buy.
It has usb port and says that I can play mp3,wma and few other formats from iphone.I tried pluging in my Epic and it doesnt recognize it.
My question is: Do anyone know if there is an app or some type of usb adaptor that I can use to play my music on iphone usb accessories?Or any other method?

Probably will work on my jvc,jvc and kenwood merged into one company so their stereos are almost identical. There is even jvc/kenwood app in the market that supposed to connect to kenwood receivers.
Im gonna try it tomorow and see if app and methods above work.
Most car stereos now come with an auxiliary port as well, you can play music from almost any device using an auxiliary cable.
WHat I'm looking for as a bluetooth-to-ipod-dock adaptor.
Sprint used to sell one on their website, but, I can't find anything about them anywhere. Everything takes a goddamned ipod dock. I want to get a new head unit for my truck but I refuse to pay the extra $150 for the bluetooth receiver when all I want is an am/fm radio with a blue-tooth input. screw wires.
Unless anyone knows a good $100-$150 head unit that comes with bluetooth and puts out 35-45w. Nothing fancy.

The Sony head unit I bought several months ago seems to fit that bill. You're checking Crutchfield.com right? That site is awesome for aftermarket car stereos. I think I paid $140 for the Sony XPLOD I bought with free shipping and the kit for my car included. I forget the watts, but it has Bluetooth and front USB and Aux ports. There's lots of other options around that price point from other manufactures as well.

I boycott Sony any chance I get, but, thanks for reminding me of Crutchfield. I haven't seen that name since I was a teenager and spent all of my money on my car stereo...for years, lol.
There are plenty of bluetooth options that at 14-20w, but, I think I still have an old MTX 25 watter around here that, when bridged down to 1ohm-stereo, will show those speakers who's boss.
Thanks again.
Ok so I got a Kenwood kdc-248u back about 6 months ago. At the time I was on T-mobile with my HD2 running a nice miui rom. I decided to plug my phone in to the usb port because guys like sticking things in things... Now it didn't give me track info, but it was playing what seemed like the files that were in my google music temp folder. Even lacking the track info (just showed a number) it was fantastic because I had my music on random while my phone was charging. The skip track and pause work too. I left T-mobile after the first time I was "capped" for using too much google music and at the slow speed nothing works. Hence coming to Sprint. BUT my Sammy no workie with stereo. Tried many methods including the above mentioned. I was waiting for the official release of ICS because I had read that google music and ICS are supposed to integrate better and offer usb support. But now I am running a FC14 rom and still no sign that my phone and stereo will speak the same language unless some the fine devs here decided to take up the challenge.. Cheers!!!

A possible alternative..?
I ran across a device called a Mimic while I was building a PC into my car that might be helpful. The Android version is still in development, but the idea is right on track.
As I understand it, any phone that can export video (may require micro-HDMI...) will be able to hook up to this and the touchscreen and car speakers will become the phone's display, control and sound output.
To keep the radio / CD function of the existing head unit, the screen will have to be mounted outside the dash or as a pop-out in the 2nd slot of a double-DIN dash.
Kinda pricey, to be sure, but it at least appears to be a step in the right direction...

How exactly does the phone know to go into car mode? Is there a chip in the dock or does the phone detect something else that puts it into car mode?

when i took apart my old samsung dock there was a small circuit board between the usb in and usb out that i assumed did it. it could be as simple as shorting pins though i guess

no they really are not. mine also rarely goes into car mode. sometimes i get car mode and then it immediately goes into daydream. and then both turn off. but i also think its a coding issue on motos side. cause when docked on the coffee table. if you use the phone and dont redock it... daydream does not come back.

its more along the lines of this reply here. i saw a nexus otg thread somewheres and it was mentioned that the diode or resistor that you use will also put the phone into car mode. or if you put it on a different wire etc. something along those lines.
Yes the car dock isn't too impressive. Mine broke after 4 days! Now I have to wait for more to get back in stock to get a replacement. I also had occasional issue of not charging and having to wiggle charging port

I have also ordered one and probably will get it by tomorrow....hoping for the best to get and will also put up the pics and review after receiving it...because I m confused a bit over the reviews of it as some people says its quite impressive one and some says its not...so I will personally put review of it after experiencing this dock on my phone....

Haven't seen one person say the car dock was impressive. Best I've seen people say is that it's a dock

Someway to send music from my tablet to my car when I don't have an auxiliary jack or a tape deck. And I refuse to use an fm transmitter they never work well for long. My old car had a tape deck and I always had the dream of a tape that turned the tape deck into a bluetooth reciever but no one really has tape decks anymore so it isn't really worthwhile to do. However same idea with a CD drive could work and appeal to many

no...your car not "suck"....just buy a new/used CD deck with bluetooth capability
I have several and can't install it in this car without making major modifications to the dash. My climate controls are part of the same unit that has the radio. Haven't found a way to separate them without just hacking it apart which I don't want to do

try this one : http://www.ebay.com/itm/Wireless-Bluetooth-Music-Receiver-Car-AUX-IN-Dongle-HiFi-for-iPhone-iPod-Samsung-/121367029733?pt=US_Cell_Phone_PDA_Cables_Adapters&var=&hash=item1c4209e7e5
No auxiliary audio either lol. If I had that I wouldn't care. But as it stands I could wire one in thru the radio. But if I'm going that route I'd rather go bluetooth. Thing is tho that will be pricey. To wire in the aux jack thru the radio will cost me over $100. I want something cheap

Do you know how much cost the developement of products with electronics?
Find ideas without electronics which can be realised with 3D-printed like this:

Some electronic products require quite low production costs if you don't do the R&D.
And especially if the electronic product is well established for a long time like computer keyboard.
You can get the keyboard parts from some OEM for a very cheap price.
The rest you need is cabling & circuitry layout.
I have the complete circuit layout for GT-N8000.
For Tape...it's a bit difficult as it's an obsolete technology, but you can still find OEM who still produce it.
Is this still relevant?
I have something that Ive been drawing and thinking about for long time.. Not just for our tablet but for universal tablet..
If thats still open please send me a message I'll send you my idea..
yes, just write me.

I did a design for one of you. Who has more?
