There MUST be a way in WP7 to set a MP3 as a ringtone. I used the a thread here to gain access to the device from the PC but all i see are the music folders. No ringtones, etc. Has anyone found a way yet? Thanks.
at this point you have to write an app that will do that .
Ringtones are most likely in the root folder and may only be in wma or wav format. Until we have access to the Windows folder or wherever the default ringtones live, we won't know if mp3 is an acceptable format.
To me, this is the most bizzare, mystifying Version 1 ommission in WP7. Surely, it can't be THAT complicated.... right?
Very simple, sync the music you want as a ring tone with zune.
Use touchexplorer and go to my documents /zune/..... there you find a folder which contains files like **.mp3.
Play till you have the right song, and then copy it to my documents ringtones. rename it if you want, close explorer and go to sound settings. now you can select the ringtone.
Wait up. Is touchexplorer actually out now?
I want it simply to make custom ringtones and alarms. Would I also need to jailbreak with chevron or is touchexplorer by itself enough. And if so, link?
I am not sure i undersand. sorry for being so slow here. I thought you couldnt get to a "file explorer". Is that what Touch Explorer does for you? Can you point me to the download please? Also, is this something you have working?
http://forum.touchxperience.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=582&p=2310
touchexplorer needs the phone to be jailbroken I think and can mess up the device.
This does work actually. The easiest way to find the song your after in touchexplorer is to find it by size. I knew my ring tone i made was 2 meg so i just looked through the folder 0100 (on mine it has 3 subfolders) till i found one at that size. It saves playing every Mp3 on your phone anyway. Oh and by the way it will play Mp3 as ringtones.
Use ChevronWP7 Custom Ringtone Manager for custom ringtones. WP7 doesn't support MP3 for ringtones, so you will need to convert your MP3s to WMA first, then use the Ringtone Manager to deploy them to your device. Easiest way to convert to WMA is with this free converter for PC. Make sure you convert to 48Khz WMA or WP7 might not recognize the file once you deploy it.
Is there any way we can choose tone for sms/email?

Overwrite the existing Alarm-##.wma or Alert-##.wma files in the \Windows folder using TouchXplorer or any of the other file exploring solutions.
Need to convert in Wma. no mp3

the easiest way, imo, is to unlock phone and deploy TouchXplorer. put your ringtone, in mp3 format, into zune and sync it with your phone. then you can enter TouchXplorer and navigate to where all the music is stored on your device. once found, copy the mp3 and navigate back to my documents and then my ringtones, and paste the mp3 there. then go back to the main screen, go to settings, ringtones & sounds, click on the ringtone part and you should now be able to see your ringtone
YES- MP3 files are able to be ringtones
Just download the RingRing7v1_1.zip. found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=990022
Make sure you extract all files to use the application
The file will then change from RingRing7v1_1.zip to RingRing7v1_1
READ THE README.txt first. you have to add ffmpeg.exe file into the RingRingv1_1 in order for the application to work. SOURCE-http://sourceforge.net/projects/mplayer-win32/files/FFmpeg/git-c9e16a9/FFmpeg-git-c9e16a9.7z/download
Click and drag the ffmpeg.exe file to the RingRing7v1_1 file to add.
After that, you should be able to open the application called RingRing7.exe
Pick any song, every song is then converted to the required wma format by itself, drag the song to empty bar next to Name, pick a start time for your ringtone and keep the duration to 30, its just a good duration time for a ringtone, but it can be changed.
Make sure the start time is like this 00:00:42.824
the 42 is seconds and the 824 is milliseconds.
PREVIEW the ringtone duration to make sure it where you want the ringtone to start on. It should preview on your zune software program.
If you like the ringtone.
Make sure your phone is on and your live tiles are showing, zune software is up, and the phone isn't syncing anything, and then DEPLOY.
The RingRing7 application should pop up on your phone, after it says SUCCESS. hit the menu button, and your custom ringtone should be added to your list of ringtones in settings!!!
Hint I found: Change the name of your song on the application if you want you ringtone to show up in alphabetical order. The name should pop up with the track number with it. Ex-"02SongTitle" Get rid off the track number before the song, then the phone will display only "SongTitle". Add the artist too if you would like.
ONE THING YOU SHOULD KNOW- Right now, there is no way to delete the added custom ringtones on your phone, only way is to do a hard reset or restore your phone to your previous update.
And that is how you add mp3 songs as ringtone without reformating every song to the dumb 48 Khz, and .wma formats. Also formats any other audio files too.

I have tried this several times, even contacted orange, but am now getting conflicting information
The manual says mp3 files can be used as a ringtone
orange then advised me to move the files into the /rings folder
However, the device cannot recognise them
I've now been told by orange the device does not support mp3 files at all!
I then told them that I can play them in Windows Media Player and was told the device shouldn't be able...
Any ideas?
Try the attached file; works for me on my SX66.
How is this installed, and into which folder(s) on the Pocket PC?
just move into any folder...and...tap on it.. it'll automatically install...
just as simple as 1-2-3...
Tried that, no change...
I have a file called bigbrother.mp3 in windows/rings folder, but this is not being recognised
If I move any other type of file (.mid .wav) into this folder, then I can set those as ringtone
I can also setup any other ringtones from the start/settings/system/add ring tones
What next?
WAV ringtones...
Hi! I also had issues getting an MP3 to play as a ringtone... Not sure if it was due to the file size or the file type.
My work around was to use a tool to slice and dice the file to
1. Make the ringtone duration 20 seconds
2. Convert the file to WAV
3. Increase the gain so the ringtone is louder than original
There are tons of free applications to do this... I usually download todays' most popular from http://www.download.com ...
Enjoy!
Hi There,
Try renaming bigbrother.mp3 to a smaller name i.e big.mp3
I had an MP3 that wouldn't display in the list until I renamed it to a smaller name, then it became available and worked succintly.
let us know how you get on
Terry
No, no change
I was wondering of the file is too large, so uploaded a smaller one at 0.9MB, but this too was not recognised
The only conclusion I can come to is the orange SPV M2000 (QTEK 9090) does not support mp3 files as ring tones, only mid and wav
That still doesn't match the manual though (clearly states "use mp3 files as ring tones")
Update to latest rom (1.40.00 ?) That should fix it - I had the same problem - updated rom & voila
I've tried the latest orange ROM 1.40 and as really unstable and went back to ROM 1.31
I'll try again and see if there is any change
If you convert a MP3 file to Wav or WMA, then you would be able to set it as a ringtone (by right clicking it in your phone).
WMA is comparitively smaller than WAV, so I personally recommend WMA. I am converting files from ""Microsoft Digital Media Edition""Audio Converter" http://www.microsoft.com/windows/plus/dme/Music.asp#audio.
Cheers
Sidd
Just upgrade. This is an issue solved long ago. Newer ROMs are more stable, just get used to them
after you have your file in the phone, make sure you put it in mydocuments/my music folder on MAIN MEMORY, then go to file explorer and find it, hold down the stylus on the song mp3,wma,midi you want and there will be an option to set it as ringtone.
easiest way to do it..
anyway now that this has been answered, i keep a 2gb minisd card full of mp3s on my phone and i need an app that will let me cut a small (30 - 60 sec) clip .mp3 and be able to send it via bluetooth, it doesnt have the option to beam built-in but it would be easier. does anyone know of such a program? (for the phone not for a PC)
again sorry for the thread hijack, theres just no need to create a new one.
I've updated the ROM to the latest version from orange
The ringtones are still in the correct folder
Also tried right click and set to ringtone
Still no change, none of the mp3 files are recognised
It does look as if it is a misprint then in the orange handbook
Note this is an orange SPV M2000
Found out why I had previously downgraded to an old orange ROM
The one (currently) on the orange website is faulty when used with the camera... and causes an internal error
Works perfectly on my i-mate jam
Ya, it not work on M2000/O2.
I think ,this causes the system do no identify MP3 type(you can see the
files property).
Please change .mp3 type to WMa or WAV, then you can enjoy.
doesntwork on my xda 2... i got set it as a ring tone, click it , then nothing else happens :O/
This can be caused if a third party app takes control of the .mp3 extension. I installed a media player and it took .mp3 control away from WMP10. in order for your phone to use mp3 as ringtone it has to be associated with WMP. I had to use pocket tweak to re-associate mp3 to WMP. and this cleared my issue.
ooh, i think i have pocket tweak somewhere, makes me so irrate when other phones less complex can use mp3 ringtones with no fuss and bother. infact this phones annoying ime more and more , its so faddy!
I'd like to ask for your advice. I did do a search prior. Any way to use external SMS tones (mp3, wav, wma etc.) with WM6. I placed them in all different imaginable folders (windows/rings; windows; my documents) but they do not show up when i select "new text message" under start/settings/notifications.
I have my mp3 ringtones working great using the native contact ringtone function in WM6 (I placed the ringtones in the windows/rings folder)
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
sms tones should only be wav files.
you should copy tham to the windows folder and thats it - not to other folders.
Phonealarm (see its thread) can use other sound types for SMS, email, ringtones et cetera. Its almost ready for primetime.

My personal favorite is PhotoContactsPro: http://www.pocketx.net/products/photocontactspro_ppc/index.html
You can assign wav, mid, mp3 and wma sounds to ringtones and sms and its also possible to create callfilters and profiles.

I tried it once. It appears that you always have to let it run in the background (cannot x out of it for it to work) and it uses up a lot of resources, Has it been working well for you on WM6?
Currently I'm using an older version (4.03), this one works without any problems, tried it with Black and Dutty's.
Concerning resources: my version needs 1,4 MB memory but the newest should need less. If you need it only for sms and ringtones then its too much but I need it because of profiles and call filtering so its ok for me.
BTW, has anybody noticed weird behavior with MMS notification and WM6. I cannot get any notification functions (sound, vibrate) to work under "New MMS message", but all the functions work under "MMS downloaded" in "start/settings/notifications". So, the only way for me to get notified about a new MMS, is to have the alarm functions for "MMS downloaded" enabled which I guess works, but is weird.

Just wanted to post a CORRECTION to this post. Sound files can also be mp3 or wma format. They must be placed in the Windows folder of your device.
Make sure you set your computer to view all hidden files. Using acitvesync click the explore button and browse through your phones directory. Place the file in the Windows folder.
*To save space, and better quality, i would suggest doing mp3 or wma format. Sound files are only required to be .wav files if you are going to use it as an alarm. The alarm settings only accept wav files, while mp3s can be used for other notifications.
ENJOY!
As for ringtones, you can save space by putting them in the ROOT/MAIN directroy of your storage card. By doing this, you can see your ringtone song in the dropdown list, and it stream off your card rather than wasting space on your phones main storage. Once again, i would suggest you make them mp3 or wma (no use wasting space doing wav files). You might also want to try Inesoft Address book. A great device that helps you group people to ringtones, set your general ringtone, and inidividual ringtones.

I placed a wma sound file in the windows directory, but it does not show up in "start/settings/notifications/New text message - play sound directory"
Then you are probably not putting it in the windows directory. Make sure you computer is set to show all hidden files and folders(VERY IMPORTANT). Connect your phone via activesync and click explore.
Then click My Windows Mobile Device icon > Windows (folder)
Then drag the files there. Once the files are there you will see the files in the sound dropdown menu.
I finally converted my WMA file to a MP3 file, put it in the windows directory, and, voila, it is showing up in the drop-down menu. I don't think wma files are supported for SMS tones with the native notification settings.
SMS tones
I found a new free app (new for me at least) that allows your to set ringtones and sms tones for each contact or catagory. called mortring
http://www.sto-helit.de/index.php?module=download&action=view&entry=63
made for wm5 but seems to work ok on 6
You can create a My Documents folder in SD card, and put every SMS and phone ringtones in this folder - no need to be put into the Windows directory. Then the phone will detect these files when you select different rings.
This also work for WM5 (but not work for SMS rings), for WM6, both work.
Agree with leochan2005.
However, does anyone of you have problem with dismissing the tone? I am using wma files and discovered that the tone kept on playing even after I have dismissed/replied/close the application.
Appreciate any reply!
Thanks!
You need to place the tones in your
DEVICE\Application Data\Sounds
folder
they will then show up as an option for a ringtone, or a notification sound
one problem is that, if you say read the SMS, the tone continues to play out, so i wouldnt recommend using a song or a like 15sec file, because it plays out the whole thing every time, unless someone knows of a workaround for this?
Is there any way that I can keep the HTC Audio Manager from adding files from a specific folder to the music library?
I listen to a lot of spoken word stuff and prefer to use Core Player for that, to keep Audio Manager just for music. But whenever I add the spoken word stuff to my storage card, Audio Manager automatically updates the library with those files.
Any way around this? Appreciate any help...
HI, I found out that the music player also plays my audio notes files (recorded calls) !!!! and no way to exclude folders from scanning mp3 files...
IN the meanwhile, the only way is to play playlists only
There is a setting regarding the device scan path in the registry in HKLM/Software/HTC/AudioManager_Eng/Config.
You could put all your music into \My Documents\My Music and set the device_scan_path_path setting to \My Documents\My Music. That way ringtones and stuff which is also in your My Documents folder wouldn't get scanned. I didn't try it, but you might want to give it a shot. You may have to soft-reset the device after changing the scan path.
Thanks Kork,
But afraid this doesn't work. It seems nobody (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=345887&page=3) seems to know what's going on with this.
I previously tried hiding the folder - didn't make a difference.
There surely must be an answer?! Someone who's much cleverer than me - help!
yea, i like my TP2 and all, but the finger friendly audio player is quickly getting on my nerves with its filterless "pull every audio file in existence" search criteria. Not to mention the fact that its throwing songs Every which way because some of them dont have proper embedded information, which, i am not sure how to edit outside of Winamp. Their also doesn't seem to be any way to Remove any files in the playlist. Media player will at least let you do that, problem is it isnt too finger friendly.
As a workaround you can rename all "talk.mp3" to "talk.mpa", then the manager will not find it, but other players will
Totalcommander can rename multiple files in one operation.
teemo, you're a GENIUS! MANY many thanks for this.
(what a stupid flaw in the Audio Manager program though eh!)
Delighted, thanks...
Hey guys
I finally found : Use .m4a , .wma , .wav and .mp3 formats as Alarm, Alert, Ringtone ((without size and length limitations))
without changing the audio name for example: Alert-01.wma or .....
first copy/paste your favorite(s) music(s) to \windows folder.
ok go [HKCU/ControlPanel/Sounds/
OEMNotifications <------------<< for Alerts
OEMAlarms <------------------<< for Alarms
OEMRingtones] <--------------<< for ringtones and Alarms
in these 3 folders add "new value" and then :
Value Name: name.mp3 or name.wav or name.wma << name=name of your audio file that pasted in WINDOWS folder.
Value Data: enter a name for your audio that you want be shown.
Value Type: String
then click "ok" to set it and go to Setting>ringtones+sounds and see
I tested with .aac , .amr , .m4a , .ac3 , .aiff , .flac , .mka , .mp2 and .ogg formats but just .m4a worked as SMS Alert.
I try it to add a small .mp4 video as ringtone but did not work.
I think if we can add more formats for Ringtones Category it will be possible to have video as ringtone.
IMPORTANT: If you use a long music as sms alert you would not be able to stop playing it, so you must shutdown your phone.
do not forget THANKS
Great!
A big-big thank you for this!
I don't know how did you find this out, but this is great!
I always had to rewrite the notification sounds in the registry after changing the ringtone, they somehow it got resetted to none after, but now this problem is gone.
I can change notification sounds and ringtones like it was factory implanted.
Thank a lot!
cheers and Happy New Year to you!
PS.: If you could find the reg key to stop converting down the resolution of pictures attached to an e-mail, you'll be a HERO.
wait, FLAC?
Obviously, the phone can't magically transcode every format. The advantage of this approach (over the official way to install ringtones) is that you can use any format that the phone supports, instead of just a subset of them.
So no, you probably can't use FLAC. I honestly don't know why you'd want to, given the speaker quality of the phone, but you can use any file that the phone could play through its media player, for example (includes AAC/M4A, for example, which I don't think is normally allowed for ringtones).

Hey guys
Thanks.
I'm not expert. I just tried all formats to see is it possible or not to complete my theory.
I have an audio converter and I tried this method for all formats that was known as audio ,but with these 4 formats and even with the most popular format .mp3 we got it.
It was one of main favorites that all of us needed and now it is possible.

Hi
You can copy and paste your audio files using Windows Phone Device Manager or File Explorer installed on your device.
For these actions your device must be full unlocked.

Hi
If you want add SMS Alerts to your device easily and without replacing them to WINDOWS folder :
Just sync them via zune as ringtone then go:
[HKCU/ControlPanel/Sounds/CustomRingtones]
they must be there. ( I suggest you for simplify your action and name your Alerts to: sms1, sms2,....)
In the path you must see your audio files with their name. OK
now remember their VALUE NAME (example : 8d.mp3) and go to
[HKCU/ControlPanel/Sounds/OEMNotifications]
In the new value you want to add, in VALUE NAME type exact value name shown in CustomRingtones and press ok. done
Note: every audio files that sync as RINGTONE via Zune are not required to move to Windows folder.

Works with Alarm ?? .. or i must copy my mp3 file in Windows folder if i want change my alarm ?
Hi
Yes it works but you know well that when you want to add audio files as ringtone via zune it must be smaller than 1MB.
Therefore if you want to use a fav music az alarm you can sync it as music and move it to Windows folder by FileExplorer.
If somebody could change the Zune limitations for ringtones via registry on PC all of our problem would be solved.

Title says it all really. Whenever I transfer files to my phone using WMP under Win 7 it converts them all to WMA files which is pointless since the track order then becomes alphabetical not as the id3 tag lists it. My version of WMP (can't find a version number since there is no file menu) does not have an option uncheck convert files as necessary like some people say there is under the device name in the sync menu.
Does anyone know how to stop this horrible behaviour and let me keep my media as I want it not how MS want it?
I thought there was a way, at least as far as Win Media 11 goes. I rarely use it so I can't recall it off the top of my head.
The next easiest thing is to stop using Microsoft products to handle audio and music; WMP is bloated and so un-intuitive.
Try Winamp, it's got a little bloat but it's pretty simple and manageable.
itunes does it's job but like most apple products, it's made for right-brained, artistic and people who feel good about things. That's not me.
I use file explorer windows, ctrl +c & ctrl +v
Good luck

I use WMP because it sorts all my audio files out for me. I have many files that aren't in a very good filing system from years ago and basically I'm too lazy to sort them out into Album/Artist folders (they have proper id3 tags though) to make finding things easier. The newer stuff I have ripped is better, in many ways due to iTunes organising it when I had an iPhone...
Also I have lots of Audio Books and WMP allows me to create Auto Playlists which excludes those files. I bashed iTunes a lot when I *had* to use it, it was bloaty and only recognised my iPhone about 2 in 3 times on Windows, but no it's gone I kinda miss it!
Found a solution/workaround
If I turn on USB debugging, thus disabling MTP mode, WMP will give me the option to not convert files. It's not as convenient as MTP since you have to click connect, but that's a small price to pay I think.
WMP12 (which is what Win7 has) can change the rip settings by pressing the ALT key to reveal the menu and then going to Tools->Options and looking for the Devices tab. Check the properties to see what the settings are here.
Also, if you don't use WMA at all change the settings in the "Rip Music" tab to use a format other than WMA. Don't know if this will help but I generally recommend to people when you don't use the format.
This problem drives me crazy. Why does WMP convert MP3 files? With my Arc S WMP converts only parts of the files. If I change the preferred format in "default-capability.xml" from MP4 to MP3 it works, but not for all files. This is sick.
I don't wanna miss WMP because it converts to 128Kbit/s and saves some space on the SD-Card.
