[Q] simple, hassle free ROM for a friend - Suggestions please - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just rooted my friends Evo and removed some bloatware and optimized things a bit. However he still wants more speed and battery life (closer to what i have with my undervolted, overclocked Droid X)
So it looks like I'm gonna install a full ROM on the phone. However he isn't tech savvy, so it needs to be straight forward to use, with no significant bugs that he's gonna notice and complain about.
Please throw out some suggestions.

bump for this. He started bugging me about flashing a ROM on his Evo again

Does he want a sense Rom if so then go for fresh, myns, or calks. If he wants aosp then go for ofc cyanogen

I just got my evo as well. Ive always preferred the stock htc sense roms. I used nfinitex's stock roms on my hero only for a slight overclock to 691/710mhz.
with the evo, i dont NEED an overclock so I just rooted the stock rom and flashed clockwork. Once i removed all the bloatware and what not, everything is all good. im happy with the performance and the battery life. i just bought a stock battery for it to keep with me if i have a long day.

Myn's Rom vs Stock

Hey guys. I was hoping some of you ROM flashing freaks can help me out here. After a month or so of having full root I finally decided to d/l Rom Manager (what an awesome app...major kudos to the dev!) and the first thing I did was try out the famous CM6 rom.
First off let me admit to the fact that I don't think I gave it a fair shot...mb I was scared by the lack of Sense that I have grown so used to, but after a very short while I reverted to my backup of the stock rom. Besides the lack of familiarity with a non-Sense ROM I was also turned off by the lack of 4G and the small things that people on the CM6 thread were complaining about such as notifications for text and emails not showing up on the status bar. I also saw a handful of people complaining about excessive battery drain. Anyway, I stray from my point. I'm sure CM6 is an awesome ROM, I mean thousands of people swear by it, so there must be something to it...just right now I need some Sense.
On that note it seems to me that the most popular Sense rom is Myn's. Please correct me if I'm wrong on this. What I really don't understand is this: What makes Myn's ROM or any of the other Sense rom better than stock? I would really like to hear from MYN users (and other sense rom users) and tell me why you prefer your ROM over stock.
Thanks in advance for any useful feedback!
I use Myn's ROM and CM6.1 (the latter right now).
The most cited thing about Myn's ROM that people like is the theming. Myn is also really on it with the updates, and he includes new features with every release.
Just nandroid and flash it. If you like Sense, you can't go wrong. Also, definitely give CM6 another go sometime in the future. It's great.

Hey Sock, thanks for the reply. Yeah, I think I def didn't give a CM6 a fair try. I think I just got scared off by the unfamiliar territory. One thing I did notice when I had it running was that my reception wasn't very good. I only had 2 bars in an area that I usually have full or close to full bars. Oddly though, it was working fine and was d/l content from the market at around the same speed as when I was on stock.
CM6 uses a different code for signal reception than sense roms (less bars). Even though it appears different, there are no differences in data speed. Those bars u see are for data strength btw

Yeah, that's something to get used to with AOSP. I like Sense and CM pretty similarly, so I nandroid back and forth pretty often.

Ive been using myns roms for quite a while now, all 3 of his warm 2.2 releases. I highly suggest you give it a try. The theme is silky smooth, all sense widgets work, myn has put his magic touch into it so it runs smoother and snappier than stock, he is ON TOP of updating his Roms, and always adds new features and little touches to it. Plus there are all sorts of options for customizing to your liking. I also get much better battery life than stock. Check it out good sir.

While I don't run Myn's (running MIUI), the reason I started flashing custom ROMs was to get rid of the Sprint bloat that the stock ROM had. After each restart I would see a Nascar app and a whole lot of other **** running that I couldn't care less about. Also now I can use setcpu to underclock my phone at times (screen off and etc) to help save my battery as well. Seeing much longer battery life now.
I have used Myn's, CM, MIUI, Calks, Fresh, DC, etc. Right now I am back on the newest stock release. I was kind of missing the stock appearance and I found that a couple tweaks I like wouldn't work on the other roms. Plus, I can get rid of all excess and unwanted apps using titanium or root explorer. Finally, my battery life is phenomenal so I think I'll stick with stock for a while. However, of the custom sense roms, I think the ones I have tried were all great. DC is very slow to update while myn is very fast and regular with his. Myn is great if you want a themed rom, if not I say try calk or fresh, Ava's rom is pretty sweet too. I guess what it comes down to is do a nandroid backup and start flashing away til you find one you like.

in my opinion myn's rom is very fast runs great and has the evo hotspot so you dont have to shell out an extra 30 a month it has 4g and is very stable. plus you get huge battery savings plus all other shell options and dev stuff that i kinda understand but dont want to sound stupid trying to explain.. i really cant wait for the next myn rom to come out it looks awesome and works even better, but i got my stock battery with heavy use from about 4 hours to almost 10 hours, but its all in personal choice. hope my input helped a little..
try su file manager & terminal from the market and if you dont have busybox get it from market and you can remove any file you want you just have to mount as read-write

[Q] Best ROM With Simple with Working 4G and And Great battery for GF.

hey guys i just rooted my GF phone and wanted to see what good rom you guys recommend for my GF use all she cares about having working 4G and good battery cause stock battery sucks...and simple no bells and wishtles maybe like wifi tethering and thats about it...PLEASE HELP there are so many ROM to chose from!!
Try ricsim's turbo stock great battery life fast and bugless and looks completely stock

I am going to have to take a different opinion on this. I would recommend Myn's TwoPointTwo. Myn has done some extensive work throughout the rom to help with battery life. For the excellent battery life that everyone speaks of, flashing a kernel may be necessary, but that is up to you. The biggest selling point for Myn's rom is the support in the thread for his rom. You can almost always ask something and your guaranteed an answer 5 minutes later.
Now do they both come with 4g enabeld ad wifi tethering app and maybe flashing a kernel is risky I want a rom that's all in one...radios....kernels yo know the whole plate...and thank for he relplies keep it comming
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
Myn has all features working 4g,3g, tethering, you name it. And the stock htc kernel is what he packages in his roms, but the latest haven't been bad at all. But I just prefer to get 26 hours of use on one charge. So it depends on how much she wants out of her battery.

Well, currently I am running:
-Myn's warm TwoPointTwo RLS 4 which is the newest release.
-On top of that I flashed the Ziggy Beta 12/14 CFS Kernel.
Personally, I would just get her onto the rom,and have her try out the rom just as is and see how she comes out with batter life. From experience I can tell you the battery you get will reflect on the way your settings are on the phone itself. Like i said earlier, have her test out this kernel thats already in the rom and see how she comes out. Kernels are like women, you have to try out a few before you can find the one that works the best for you.

Nope, pretty solid rom.
Myn's hands down right now, for the best looking (Damn it's pretty), best FULLY functioning, best battery rom, IMO anyway.
HTC should have hired MYN for the overall appearance and UI experience, instead of the crap they tossed together with Sprint.
Another vote for Myn 2.2!!! Best ROM I have ever used.
I gotta agree, I'm using twopointtwo RLS4 and I get 20hours out of my phone with average usage and 10hours with heavy usage.
Without a doubt, Myns is the way to go. I don't think ill ever use anything other than myns( for my daily driver, still like to check others out). Every release is rock solid. Delay no further. And btw, the kernel it comes with, HTC 17, gives my phone the best battery life. I've tried all if ziggys and most of nets. They all ran great, fast, and smooth for me, but the stock did the best overall.

questions... newbie help

I recently ventured into flashing my evo and it was quite easy to root, and return to stock. thank you guys for all of the information posted or else i wouldnt have been able to do it..
My questions are about roms.. Which Rom is the best to use for performance and battery conservation..
So far I love HTC sense, but i'd like more battery and less lag out of it.
Rom's I have tried are:
Cynagen 6
Fresh 3.5
and another i can't remember the name but it was based off of android 2.1
All of these roms ATE my battery.. within an hour-hour and a half I was down to nothing, and It sat in my pocket the whole time, after running quadrant.
I did however notice, my phone would never go to sleep on either rom, not sure if i messed up with rooting it or not.
Any suggestions on what rom to use? I don't want to wait two years for the new sense ui and am curious about gingerbread.
The rom im looking into as of now is CM7-EX.v9, Mixed replies for problems/no problems in that thread though.
As i have said I am new to this, new to linux, etc.. any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.. thank you and thanks or all of the great things on this forum.
Personally I'm using a customized version of MikFroyo 4.4. I'd have to say what he's done to speed up the system is amazing. A lot of tedious work. I turn it into a "senseless" version and remove an ishload of other apps and use ADW Launcher EX. All in all, it's the best ROM I've used. Battery life is pretty decent as well.
If you like sense then try myn's rls 5
As for roms, what do you need to have and what can you do without? AOSP roms still don't have full functionality but do have really sweet custom things added in that could make up for it.
As for speed, I have compared CM6.1 to the Sense rom I am using now and the Sense one is faster/smoother. It has Mikfroyo 4.4 as the base but is even faster than that one. Battery life is OK.
However, if you are not even getting 2hrs out of your battery then something is wrong. You need to investigate or change some settings because no matter what combo you are using should get at least half a day out of it.
1) Make sure you wipe everything before you flash (I'd recommend Calkulin's format all zip)
2) Let ROMs and their respective kernels "settle into your phone." This usually takes 2-3 days.
3) Pick ROMs that don't emphasize speed/power (CM) as much and more on user experience (Myn's)
4) Check my sig if none of these help (however they should )
You may also want to check and see if you are on the newest pri 1.90 if so you can try flashing back to pri1.77 this has helped some people with the 100% wake issue. Then I would suggest another kernel possibly. Good luck.
Oh and +1 for mikfroyo!
mikfroyo seems to be the way to go... someone told me that the battery life would be junk for a few days but i wasn't sure.. i was more worried about the awake time and the up time being the same, meaning something was keeping my battery on.
I like the sense, in fact i'd love to try the new sense for the htc desire on it to see how it is.. looks amazing.
bloatware and what not i can do without
i dont have 4g in my area
i'd like to have both cameras working(i use them alot with my daughter)
mostly its a weather/texting machine.. sound like i got the wrong phone lol.. but i love the advantages of it.

Epic New Rooter, Few Questions

First things first, i'm not new to rooting I have an Evo 4G and love it, my wife has
an Epic and is having a lot of issues with battery life.
She's not an advanced user but definitely enjoys a lot of the features her phone does have to offer (Facebook sync and custom ringtones to be specific).
I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good stable ROM for me to install to her phone and verify that it can be done after using this rooting method...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=770388
Thanks in advance.
Do you want to stick with 2.1, or do you want to go up to unofficial 2.2?
For 2.1, I would suggest Syndicate ROM. For 2.2, if you don't want to mess with the ext4 conversion, I would suggest Bonsai4All 1.1.4.
Sticking with 2.1 and Syndicate...
Anything extra I should know before rooting?
If you're going syndicate it will be perfect. Smooth and extremely stable. I was loving it but I had to be nosey and try the unoffcial 2.2 and am each day getting closer to 2.1. Having insane texting issues with the dk28 modem.

Make sure you get an overclocker to go with syndicates xtreme kernel....
Overclock widget is nice and free, but as far as syndicate goes, I've had much better luck with the paid app setCPU. Plus its more flexible and you can set up the right over/under clocking conditions so she'll never have to worry about it, while providing her better battery life and performance

I'm all for going the tweak method since my wife has a similar issue. But for 20 bucks you can get a 3500mAh battery on ebay from china and avoid the blame when her Facebook wont sync or someother unrelated issue. I have been down this road. I put my wife on midNIGHT 2.9 and it gives a pretty good jump in battery life...but had to suffer the wrath when the contacts didn't sync the same. So trust me if your wife isn't into this stuff...take the easy route. I did...put her back to stock and now she can't blame you for Android issues...haha.

New User, advice on ROM?

Just got an EVO tonight, I would have liked to wait for 3D but I needed faster internet/phone asap since I started my new job.
I've been reading the forums, how to root, etc. the past couple of days, and am in the process of rooting. But there are just so many ROMs all which have there own pros/cons, so I was wondering if anyone had advice based on what I mainly want to use my phone for...
CM7 seems like the most popular, and I care mainly about stability, removing bloatware, and performance, care less about visual stuff. Plus it sounds like you can customize it with themes anyways.
But I've read threads where GPS/4G breaks which is what I care about the most.
I live in OC which has 4G, and that is the primary reason I upgraded from my old phone. 95% of the time this phone will be used for internet/games.
I was debating just going for a stock ROM, but not sure if benefits of a custom one outweighs stock ones.
Does anyone have advice on a stable ROM that improves performance and has little risk of breaking things like 4G? Or at least a few I can narrow down to?

Normally I would suggest MIUI, but since you need 4G either go with CM 7 or if you want to stick with a Sense based ROM I would suggest MikFroyo. Hope that helps and good luck with the new job.

If you want to keep your stock rom you can also just search root uninstaller on the market and get rid of any bloatware on the stock rom.
CM7 is the way to go friend...
Thanks for the replies. I thought I'd get the CM7 suggestions. I'm assuming RC4 is the version I want?
The only issue I had was that I saw in the known issues that some people were experiencing problems with 4G/GPS, so I wasn't sure if that was a widespread issue or not.
cm7 is an awesome ROM, dont get me wrong... if its your first rom troubleshooting may be a hassle because until it becomes an official release there will be bugs to deal with.
my suggestion would be look in the development thread and try a simple sense based rom first and read its threads (or even cm7 for that matter) to see what people are reporting about it.
*imho*
I switch between my own stock backup and CM7. CM7 is the way to go if you are looking for a different rom. It is basically stable. I have found nothing wrong with it.
MIKFROYO is great, but have been running Koni's Elite 111 with Honeycomb Dream theme for over a month...AWESOME...STABLE...FAST using netarchy 4.3.2 cfs sbc havs less
I was wondering this myself last week and what I found out is that once you see how easy it is to switch roms you'll be testing out a bunch of them and keep finding yourself returning to a particular one for one reason or another... and that's the one I stuck with. I ended up using Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo but I'm sure I'll be trying out a couple more today
Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo RLS5. It's fast, stable and everything works and it's very customizable like any other Android device.

lol I know right. Basically my old company was cool with everything as long as I got my work done so I never really needed to use internet on my phone as much. Have a good gaming rig at home and was always at my desk at work.
My new job is with at a larger corp. (like 3,000 people) and has way more rules and regulations. My boss doesn't care and always goes on his phone or reads the paper in his freetime, but it's a company rule. So I wanted something that I could go online with
Anyways, I rooted and installed CM7 last night, it was quite easy. I haven't had any problems but I did like certain things with the stock Sense UI better. Maybe I'll try some other ROMs suggested here since it was so easy.
I gotta agree that, I've use MIUI, CM6 (not 7), fresh, and researched but not used MikFroyo, and my favorite right now is Myn's Warm 2.2 RLS5 w/o a doubt. It has everything you would want in a SENSE based ROM. Then, I'd also download the launcher pro that's right on that same thread, it adds a ton of additional customization that is great.
If you want a stock look but a bit faster and possibly better battery life check out Calkulins evio series 2 its on version 1.8,by far my favorite sense rom.
If you want aosp gb rom very stable really fast, gps works for me but with all gb aosp its different from user to user.Try salvage mod on version 1.1 though 1.2 is coming soon.
Both great roms.
I'm running the new CM7 Final, and I love it. I was using the nightlies and the RC's, and they were all great for a daily driver. Now CM7 Final is out? To me, this can't be beat.
It's fast, stable, has the features, and does everything I want. Let us know which one you decided to try out...
