WP7 Email Client Issues / Missing Features - Windows Phone 7 General

The WP7 email client has mostly worked fine, but it seems to lack a lot of features. Here are a few issues I've come across so far:
Sent Mail folder (for IMAP) hardcoded as "Sent Items" - not configurable (unlike iPhone and any modern email client), and different from desktop Outlook (which defaults to "Sent"); incompatible with most Linux email servers -- same problem as WM6.x had
Cannot edit quoted text when forwarding emails
Cannot select text (unlike other WP7 Office apps)
Cannot set port numbers for IMAP/POP/SMTP - auto-config works fine for most configurations, but sometimes not
Email status changes (e.g. delete, keep-as-new, etc.) not updated until sync interval or manual sync - iPhone and others instantly sync status changes

On this first point, turns out all the other email folder names are also hardcoded. When you delete emails, they have to go to "Deleted Items"-- otherwise they just disappear. (Outlook on the desktop defaults to "Trash" and is, unlike WP7, configurable)

You can change port like this :
Code:
In server name just enter : xxx.myserver.com:port

not a problem for me, opened new email, clicked on the paperclip, added file, clicked on the paperclip, etc.

Ok so how you attach different files on WP7?
You see a file system? With all docs and all pics?

No, you cannot attach files to emails, as WP7 does not expose its file system to apps (outside of isolated storage).
The only things you can attach are photos from the phone's photo library. It's like what the iPhone 1.x email client was like in 2007 (minus all the features listed above).

Ok, thanks for clarifying.

You can attach documents to emails. You have to goto the Office hub, press and hold the document, hit send, then choose the email address you want to send from. Although it should be an option when you hit attach to attach a document or a picture.

Yes, I was asking about Multiple attachements.
It's so idiotic you cannot create multiple attachement emails.
Of course you cannot send video neither music.

You can send from within the Office app, but the email client UI itself is unable to attach anything but images. The iPhone has a similar limitation, but loads of apps can send email, and copy-and-paste alleviates at least a few of the challenges.
For instance, if I draft an email, then finish a document and want to attach it, in WP7 I'm SOL, as you have to first go to Office, select the finalized document, and then email, which creates a blank email, and you can't copy-and-paste the text from the message drafted earlier.
One solution might be to have a system whereby apps can register to have their file stores open to the email app to use for attachments.

Microsoft will kill all of us with wp7.
I do not know why????
Many disadvantages .

socialsync will now fetch your friends list, so this takes about 8 http requests per 100 friends.
now you can link facebook friends (on the left) with pocket outlook contacts (on the right).
this is where you can import facebook friends that does not have a corresponding outlook contact already.
your sync profile has been saved and is ready to do an initial sync.
this is the actual sync process. it takes 4 http requests per contact to get their information.

oops, didn't know that Sense can do this, which version?
but yeah, mine does more then.. it can bring down new facebook friends and create new contacts on phone, but also their email address, date of birth, address, contact pic --> outlook pic, IM addresses, etc
I would love this, but the reason we haven't had this so far is that it violates Facebooks TOS and gets people banned for doing this. Will this not be a problem?

I would love this too and it would be a shame if it did violate the TOS - I can't see how it can? - my Facebook friends update their individual privacy policies to allow me to view the information they wish. As far as I can see that's all the app is fetching?
Please do continue this project if you can, even if Sense does already have this functionality - I don't have sense (the ui!)! Doesn't SPB Mobile Shell do this too?
The way I see it, is this is just a custom User-Agent. If Facebook want to go round "banning" people for using a non-normal browser, then it's not a site I'd like to use.
I imagine people will be syncing once a day or once a week.. I've been syncing like every 5 minutes for a week with no problem using my own account. I'll let you all know if I ever get "banned".
I'll add a disclaimer to first post, but brandall got it on the head; this is all information shared and authorised for by your friends.. this app just saves you having to click each profile by hand and eye to manually update your phone. It's also a bit like any HTTP cache/proxy or FasterFox.
Plus, in theory, how could they ever tell? I haven't done a byte-by-byte comparison, but I do things like Referrer tracking, cookies, random delays.. for all they know it's a scriptlet running in firefox.. and even if they deployed javascript obfuscation, this sync could just run an IE session in a hidden window and use DOM to access the data..
I like this app a lot and look forward to its release.
I also look forward to it. Been looking for something like this for a long time. Any chance it will be wvga as well?
Facebook doesn't allow any application that can access personal details other than Names and Birthdays. Phone numbers, addresses, etc are all off limits. If you account is running any app that access that stuff you can be banned. It's happened many times in the past. Just look up "Facebook sync to Outlook" or a derivitave of that.
If this app has a way around that, then sweet.
Great!
Finally a Facebook Sync! Thank you so much

Is it possible to choose what data to sync? For some friends, I prefer not to have their profile pictures sync'ed.

not yet, can't think how to present per-user selective importing on a 3-inch user interface
what is the most annoying rough-edge? i would like to polish that.
donations welcomed (for my personal efforts on this forum; not specifically this app)
very nice!! although i spent 1 hour linking my facebook account to outlook it is still a nice idea...
few suggestions:
1- option for exporting link information in case i need to redo all that after a room upgrade
2- also like previous comments, the name boxes are small so if i have 3 guys named Mohammad i do not know which one is which...
3- easier search in outlook contacts by allowing to type names instead of searching in a big contacts list
thank you for your effort, you are really achieving something here, although it is only for educactional purposes only
wow, why did it take an hour? i did put randomised delays inbetween requests, but they are quite low (0.1-1.5 secs).
1. to backup partnership database, just back up your outlook/pimstore.. the partnership exists because the GovernmentID field is filled in with a facebook profile url. this is the key to breaking sync relationships with a contact.
the file on device friends.dat is just a cache of friends, it can be lost with no problem.
2. i struggled to find a decent gui toolkit to use for this app. microsoft made an iphone GUI clone but it's too complex to digest (no design-time support, no docs, no support).. but in March we should all see Compact Silverlight Beta, maybe that can help. basically I use a ListBox which doesnt support left/right scrolling. maybe i'll try a ListView if that exists in CF..
3. i could maybe do that. what part of my auto-guess feature doesn't help you properly? on my phone it's a snap to find someone - it jumps to the closest named contact whenever i select a new fb friend on the left..

The purpose for these types of apps isn't really to send yourself a bookmark for a main website, but more to send a complicated link to save you typing in a 180 character or so URL into your HD7, or having to open up your email and copy / paste a link to yourself (spamming your own email in the process).
For example; I'm on my PC browsing deviant art and I see a cool image that would make a great lockscreen wallpaper for my HD7. I right click somewhere on the page, select "Send to Windows Phone". I pick up my phone, open the "Send to WP7" app, and there's my link to that page. I can now use that image as my wallpaper.
Similarly, if you're reading an article on some website and you've got to get to work but want to finish reading that article on the bus, just send it to yourself with this app and easily pick up the same page on the bus!
It's an incredibly handy and ingenious app in my opinion... with lots of ingenious uses if you can think them up.
I sent a question to the dev that I haven't seen an update for - how to remove those darned links when you're done with them. Until then, the app is useless for me, but it does have potential...

There is now an alternative paid-for app called Browser to WP7 that works on the same idea except it allows links and text to be deleted. It also categorises them in the app and allows you to share them by sms, email, search with bing etc.
I'm waiting to see if Send to WP7 gets any future updates because it's currently free and works pretty well for me.

Hey guys - never noticed this thread until today. I am the author of Send to WP7.
Send to WP7 has the ability to delete links (as of the update several days ago - I was stuck in limbo for several weeks. )
Multi-delete is coming in an application update next week.
Send to WP7 has a live tile # indicating how many links you need to download to the phone. You can already send a link via SMS or Email, just tap and hold, select 'Show All', and then click the mail icon. I'll add more options to the 'right-click' menu soon. I didn't think there was much of a reason for things like 'Search with Google' or 'Search With Bing' (wouldn't you have just done these things on your PC anyway?), but I may add things like that in the future.
Send to WP7 will remain free.
Apologies to the OP for not understanding how to setup the software, I still assert that it is not very complicated if you just read the instructions carefully. I do think I need some updates/screenshots to the setup page, though. On that note, I was never able to figure out how to configure 'Browser to WP7' to use anything but Chrome...
I thought it was simple to use and easy to setup but then again I've been using Chrome to Phone for ages with my Desire now.

Hi cxkx -
Note that Send to WP7 Desktop is an alpha release, I have not built any functionality into the phone app to support it yet. In it's current state, it is best for transferring files. Sending an SMS or Email does "work", but you'll then have to tap & hold the item and select Send via mail. The real name for these items should be something like "prepare SMS/mail."
Again just note that this is all in flux, but I wanted to get it out there so those who really wanted the functionality could have it immediately.

Yes, you enter a message (and optionally a destination contact number, but this won't work until I add support into the phone app itself) and click send. The message is sent to your phone using exactly the same means as the note. If you have enabled push notifications, you'll get a toast. Tap and hold the entry on the phone, and select 'Send info via SMS'. It is not the most elegant procedure, I know...
I ve tried sending the clipboard contents but it didnt work, anything I copy in iexplorer though can be send, maybe a plain html page where you can write and then send using the accelerator will do the trick. Keep on the good work!

I'm not sure why it says the program is executing from C:\Windows\system32, maybe that is related. Usually ClickOnce will set that to your profile (e.g. C:\Users\CK)
It appears that you're getting jumplist callbacks for sending notes, but nothing else - they all use exactly the same mechanism so I'm not sure what'd cause that. It appears you are using a localized version of Windows, what language/locale are you using?
English UK

Send to WP7 now has a desktop companion app

The desktop counterpart integrates with explorer and allows you to right click on any file ex docs and pictures and send it to your windows phone! I am not sure how secure the cloud storage is at the moment but this is some nice innovation for a free app.
Read more here: http://wpcentral.com/send-wp7-hits-back-desktop-app
You can compose texts, emails and notes on the desktop and send it to the phone as well. The application utilizes windows 7 jumplists and works almost instantaneously.
I'm impressed.
Cloud is the future. Resistance is futile.
Well, well, well...I guess if Microsoft wasn't going to step in and make SkyDrive play nice on WP7 (access through browser doesn't count if you cannot sync), then someone had to. I like where Send To WP7 is going. It is quite impressive indeed.
It's just a shame that Microsoft, who probably has more data centres than 98% of all corporations in the world, and is in the best position to promote cloud services ( like Windows Live ) is still lagging behind.
I'm the author of Send to WP7, if you have any other suggestions for ways you can send stuff to your phone, do let me know. I'm open to pretty much anything that's technically possibly without costing me an arm and a leg in infrastructure.
The main complaint in the current implementation is that it uploads to a public hosting site. Live Mesh and SkyDrive don't have suitable APIs for doing this, as I would very much like to tie everything into Windows Live. In order to be useful, the files need to be accessible via an HTTP URL, without requiring a cookie or authentication (HTTP auth may be acceptable, but it needs to be opened in the browser to have access to docs and PDFs.
Also do note that this is a preview quality build, I just figured some people may already want to start using it.
If only you could make a "Send From WP7" app...

I'm not so sure this is practical, you may as well just email a link, right? if you're talking about from the browser, using the bookmarklet for alternate phones is supported in all desktop browsers.
davux, i'm not sure if it's possible as you don't have socket support, but a possible way to get skydrive access to work is to pass windows phone through fiddler and work out what it does when it syncs a onenote note to skydrive. i'm pretty sure this would be socket base meaning you'd be stuck, but if it isn't, you may just have the information required to directly upload to skydrive, with proper credentials and all.
it's just an idea, but this is what i'd try as a developer (yes i am one, but no where near experienced enough at this stage).

I can actually access SkyDrive via WebDAV already, which is an HTTP protocol. I suspect OneNote sync does something similar, but I haven't checked it out. The primary issue with this approach is that it won't be all that useful. Images and text would transfer well like this, but if you wanted to send a PDF, or Office doc, there would be no way to open it. The only way to open these types of docs is through the browser. I figured a really important use-case is documents, so I decided to take another approach.
BTW - the current build of the desktop app now supports uploading to localhostr.com, serving up files via a local HTTP server, and using your Dropbox account.

Interesting stuff indeed. I for one, appreciate the work you are doing.
Wait a minute, you can use the Desktop app and upload to phone using your own local network? That is significantly easier to trust than a free cloud service.

Yes. Unfortunately I can't make it an SSL connection, I'm not willing to pay for a cert. I will see if a test-signed certificate will work, but that is not actually as secure.

I've been trying out the desktop app with the local Wi-Fi method, and this seems to me the best way to get stuff to the phone. It's very quick too.
The dropbox integration isworking, and quite well. I'm wondering is there a way in future to upload to a private dropbox share?
Even though it's only an early preview, the dekstop app is great. I like the integration with Windows 7; I have it pinned to my taskbar. Might be useful to have a "Start with Windows" option in there. I'm sure you're aware of some of the bugs like the lack of proper icons in the jumplist Tasks and the filenaming issue that causes PDFs to be unreadable from WP7. To be expected with a preview.
From a UI point of view, I think the "Set Transfer Destination" option should not be in the jumplist and should be in the main config window instead. It's not a menu item you would need ever access to again after you've set your dropbox settings.
The WP7 app itself is also coming along great. I'm wondering if you will split the file list into categories, eg Notes, Links, Images, Files etc. Or failing that, have just "New" and "All" categories? Perhaps, for things like notes, you can Archive them into an Archive category... just an idea. Oh, and when a file is sent via the desktop app at the moment, for example a photo, instead of displaying just as "File", perhaps it could display as "File - {name}"?
Great stuff, getting great use out of this app so far, and its usefulness will explode when copy and paste arrives to WP7 devices. Thanks!
A big thanks to Dave for this excellent tool, it is also nice to see a thread wherevpeoplevare pushing the boundaries of what can be done with wp7 rather than just slanting it off.

Not likely, as I've been saying, the phone needs to be able to access a share via the web browser. As far as I know, Dropbox private folders won't do this. That's why I've included an option to mutate the name a bit, so someone can't just guess filenames in your public folder.

Note that the phone app has absolutely no support for the desktop app at this time, I will bring support for it in an update. Views are likely, I haven't decided what to do yet. I wouldn't expect that update for a couple of weeks though.

Send to WP7 Desktop
Dave, thanks for this app. It works well so far & I'm sure I'll get a lot of use out of this. One problem though I'm not getting notifications & when I open the app on the phone I get a push notification error. 'Failed to open channel'. Great work mate. Keep it up. Will send a donation when I get a chance.

I actually have this same problem on my device. I opened the same-named notification channel on a dev build, then I uninstalled that build while it had the channel open - now neither the marketplace build nor new dev builds will open the channel.
I don't know how you got into this situation, but my point is that I don't really know what I can do to help--I'm under the assumption that all I can do to fix my device is to do a master reset (so I'm waiting for the NoDo update). I'm hoping that this bug is fixed in the next update, but I don't know if it's even officially reported.

I've selected all possible countries, which I think includes Germany. I don't think there is anything else I can do for you--maybe I could post a link to the XAP and you could sideload it? My only issue with this is that I'll then have to maintain a secondary distribution channel, and will need to build some kind of updater.
you should be able to post a zune link and it should allow him to access it that way. no need to sideload.
The Zune:// link has always been on my product page.

Exchange Email Client

Thinking about getting the phone - but just have one question as this has been holding me back for a while now from getting an Android phone.
Could anyone confirm if folders and sub folders for TouchWiz email Exchange client are all on one level or have a tiered structure as per Outlook ie:
Folder 1
¦
------ Sub Folder 1
Thanks.
That woul be a very important information for me too!
Looking forward to detailed answers!
TIA
+1
Thanks!
I can't confirm the folder structure but can confirm that Activesync works.
Thanks!
Could you confirm some other things, too?
- bi-directional contacts sync
- bi-directional calendar sync
- bi-directional sync of recurring appointments
- html mails
- confirming appointments
Hmmm. Folder structure depends on the view you look at it in. It shows all my Exchange folders in a list in the main view (there's a quick dropdown to change folder) but in folder view, it shows in hierarchy.
Bi-directional contacts and calendar have been working since the original SGS and all synced to my phone fine. Not sure about recurring appointments but it syncs all of mine from Exchange to the phone fine. HTML mail works fine too (would be a bit ****ed up if it didn't!). Never tried confirming appointments so I can't say anything about that.

Thanks for the information. That's interesting because the default Android email client on 2.3.3 does not seem to include an option for folder viewing hierarchical folders...
I'm on my first full day so can report on this a bit now.
I'm trying out the stock client with an ES 2010 server. Some nice surprises:
- Full folder structure accessible
- Server search
- Task sync (!)
- Decent interface (don't love the dark background for the email list...)
- Syncs faster than my Atrix running Froyo
- Nice little widget icon showing unread emails
- it's got a crazy 2-pane inbox view w/preview when in landscape mode (think tablet view or desktop Outlook) - this is really cool!
- Out of office setting
On the downside, the email list widget sucks - it doesn't scroll and only shows 3 most recent (not even unread) emails so that's a bit of a disappointment. Also the calendar widgets are nice but they're too large and not resizable. Thankfully Calwidget works fine.
I'm going to try to live with it. I have a paid TD license and I had gotten used to their widgets on my Atrix, but I suspect stock is more battery friendly.
Thanks for the info. Would you mind posting some screenshots of the email client. I used Froyo, and I can't even do a search on my emails. I ended up using TD as well. Do we have search now? Is there pinch to zoom on emails? If not, can we resize font size? and How? sorry too many questions.
Thanks in advance.
I use sgs2 as my primary business phone., exchange 2010 support is the best ever, on windows mobile or android.

Here you go...I've been using it for a few days now and NO need to employ TD which is saying a lot for a native Exchange client! The only thing missing is Notes sync which I can live without (don't change notes that often and can just drag them into Evernote).
The client actually blows me away...to answer your question, we have search as you'll see in the screenshots, as well as pinch to zoom, font resizing in both the Inbox view as well as the message body. Let me know if you have any other q's.

I don't need to sync multiple exchange-accounts, but I have several calendars in one single exchange-account.
Is it possible to sync all calendars, that are present in my exchange-account, or can I only sync one?

No options there for the "calendar folders" so I don't think so. Then again, I don't have any sub-folders so I can't be 100% sure.

Actually I do not work with sub-folders in calendars, but I have several calendars in Outlook under the main-folder, that are synced to exchange.
Can you try to add a new calendar in outlook and see if you can sync that second calendar to the phone via exchange?

One more question. From the screenshot, I can see the search is "search server" and not local search.. is that true, because if so, then I need internet service to search and also it would be slower.
Thanks again

I have a very simple app request to target unlocked phones. Basically a one button switch between primary LiveID accounts based on sensboston's work: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1335240
1. Launch app
2. app asks for email address
3. user types in email address or selects email from list of last-used addresses
4. app asks "Are you sure?" with suitable warning
5. app writes selected email address to following regkeys:
Code:
[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\ActiveSync\Partners\{B2830118-7BC6-4A74-8C9A-3D8B9CEF88E0}]
"Email"[email protected]
"User"[email protected]
[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\IdentityCRL\Environment\Production]
"DefaultID"[email protected]
6. app automatically reboots phone
Simple enough, right?

Here it is!
Because I made no test on myself please give me feedback if the registry values get applied
ne0cr0n, unfortunately, "my" method has some important cons (you should list 'em) - after that change you'll be not able to upload pictures to SkyDrive, also some accounts like Twitter will be non-functional I've tried to find some workaround but without success...

but you can revert it back, right?
The new LiveID could be associated to a different market zone, which you could use to buy some apps with your correct credit card infos, then revert back to your main LiveID, and regain all regular functionalities like auto uploads to skydrive, twitter integration, etc.
Am I right?

I'm so sorry but I can't confirm - just never tested this way. I've researched that hack 'cause damn Verizon blocked and deleted my very-very old email ( @verizon.net) what I've used during 11 years, and also as my LiveID email.
Wow dude thanks for writing the app so quickly. What is the etiquette for sharing apps? Are you supposed to share source code too? I don't want to be rude by asking you for the source
I don't use twitter, but I was able to upload a photo to skydrive just fine after swapping LiveID's. Steps:
reset my phone with my own liveID
download bunch of apps from appstore
dev unlock/interop, etc
manually edit registry and change to my wife's LiveID (she has zunepass on her ID which is why I wanted to swap to hers)
reboot phone
take picture
upload to skydrive
login to skydrive app and see that picture is there on *my* skydrive account, not my wife's
So skydrive integration with picture hub/camera obviously stored my liveID and credentials somewhere other than the regkeys I edited. Most likely Twitter is the same way.
I presume the credential data is stored encrypted in some weird GUID key with no obvious pattern. Too bad there is no regmon/procmon tool like on Big windows, otherwise I could figure it out in a few seconds... Although somehow I doubt that you can use provxml to import export those keys to re-write encrypted credentials. That would be a pretty bad exploit.
So I ran IDSwitch and it gave me the error "no root access". Hmm. So I went into WP7 Root tools and switched on "trusted" for the app.
So a pre-requisite for running the app is to have WP7 root tools? I'm kinda new at this so perhaps that is an assumption of any app that is going to do interop/native stuff? In order to get it to work you have to set it to "trusted"?
Anyway the app let me type in the new liveID and rebooted the phone, but upon booting up, it appears that the old LiveID is still there in the 3 registry settings. I ran it a second time and the app remembered the address I typed in so thats cool. BUt again after rebooting, it failed to modify the registry entries.
Can you post up a debug version with some breakpoints or console spew? I could try to attach a debugger on my end (not sure I know how to do that, but I can try to figure it out)

I uploaded the source. Should make things much easier
I tried it on Samsung Focus Mango updated with WP7 Root Tools. Even though it reboots but it does not change the primary id. After reboot when I open the app again, it shows the primary id as the old id and not the id to which I wanted to switch.
Found the bug. I used the content from to current ID textbox not the new ID textbox -.-
I guess nobody tested it or I am getting a different result. Here is what happens :
1. ID A which is primary ID in my Account with No CC.
2. I switch from ID A to ID B. ID B does not have a CC.
3. When I access Marketplace, The region used is according to ID B.
4. Next I Move to buy an App and it asks me to signin with ID A instead of ID B.
5. For free apps, I can easily download it without going to login page ever which is pretty obvious.
Today Evening I will try out to buy app by signing with ID A when it sends me to login page of ID B by first sigining out and then signing again.
Few things I noticed :
1. Facebook, Twitter, Skydrive all was working.
2. It takes a while for the OS to realize the ID is new and hence may take around a minute or more to change marketplace.
3. I downloaded a free app with the swtched id and used it without any issues.
4. I even updated a free App which was bought using the primary ID with the new ID.
5. Email ID A stopped working. It did not show any email nor it gave an error of wrong password which is pretty odd.
My Thoughts :
1. This will be useful for parents who have kids carrying a Windows Phone who do not want to give them credit card access but using this they might buy apps for kids.
2. I still need to test but this will work for IDs which are in same region. For example I have a US id to which if I want to add a CC, the country is fixed and hence I cannot use an Indian CC with it.

Try to reboot after LiveID change.
Just tried it out and it worked. The file was uploaded to Skydrive account of the primary Live id.
Wait... What "primary Live id" and what are you tried? New one or the old one? Have you tried:
- change LiveID to new one
- reboot handsets
- go to pictures hub and share picture to the SkyDrive ?
When I said Primary Live Id I mean the ID with which the phone was configured.
1.Phone configured with ID A
2. Change to ID B using the app, Reboot
3. Upload to Skydrive and it was stored in ID A Skydrive Account.
He-he, it's exactly what I mean by "not working". For example if you change first (original) LiveID email to the new one (as I had to do), you'll be not able to upload pictures to SkyDrive, and can't login to the Twitter account. So please do not confuse people.

Oh Ok I understand now what you said by breaking. The new ID cannot be used for Skydrive or Facebook or Twitter etc in short, anything connected with old Live id.
Basically its not a true switcher and can only be used to buy apps with the new account connected with CC
Hi all
The whole idea of this app is JUST to let you assign an account that will give u the ability to buy apps from marketplace using CC, if your original ID have problem with adding CC information. So it is not to change you ID permanently. You can read my thread if u want. Anyway thanks op for making the app.
I can confirm this works. Just bought an app using a different account and it works. Editing a video on this so will be up in couple of hours.
