Which download manager is the fastest and most reliable ?
I find that the native browser allows downloads, but is slow, therefore I'm looking for a download manager preferably, with a browser built-in (like Download Manager Pro on the iPhone).
Thanks
I was looking for a decent one too. But no success...
Any ideas?
The speed would be mostly dominated by your internet connection. Unless if you are on a high speed wifi (which is still quite slow compared to cable), the download manager shouldn't make a difference.
That's not entirely true actually. I use EDGE connection and download managers on my winmo improves my downloading significantly.
That's why I've been seeking for some decent download manager for my android phone.

That's strange.
But anyway, I don't have an answer.

when I got my desire it was super fast (anything is compared to the hero)
however ive noticed that over time it has become a little laggy when live wallpapers are running
i have very little running in the background as far as I can tell
the screen movements dont seem as smooth
ive still got 50+mb of program memory left
the only things i have running in the background are
weather and toggle widgets
seepu (processor monitor program)
Gmail counter (screen widgets)
messaging counter (screen widgets)
I also have the following installed
advanced task killer
appbrain market sync
appremover
explorer
ezcam
google service
google translate
mixzing
moodpaper
navigon
oi file manager
onoff widget pack
places directory
pkt auction ebay
shop savvy
spotify
skype
trafficintel
traintimes
xda
i have done a hard reset and it still is sometimes laggy ... gets worse when i install programs ... ive tried to work out which is causing the lag but have give up
any idea#s
i regularly flush the cache also
its still faster that my hero however its annyoying that it appears to get slow
perhaps ive got use to the speed and now want faster speeds however thought id ask if anyone else is having problems
I never use live wallpapers, it makes it slow. You also have lag without live wallpaper on? And I think its very easy to get used to the speed.
I hope we get some update soon (or even the 2.2 eventually) and see some nice speed improvements.

Live wallpapers altogether make my phone laggy. The nexus live wallpaper seems OKAY though. And yeah, 2.2 will hopefully fix the lag.

I would get rid of advanced task killer. In my experience this causes a lot more problems than it solves. It might just be useful if you are a real expert and have a badly behaved program but for the average user it almost always results in worse performance both in speed and battery life. I'm amazed that people continue to use it. Android is NOT like Windows, applications are usually suspended rather than run in the background and use hardly any resources.
The Android system does its own task killing where needed. 2.1 is rather good at it and you will not find many people who know what they are doing trying to improve on it.

+1 Completely agree.
ATK is the most likely cause of the slowdown.
yeah mine lags only when a) I use live wallpaper (which I dont anymore)
and b) when its installing an app after downloading (for a few seconds) other than that its fine.although I do wish for a fix in the new 2.2 or something
i agree live wallpapers slow mine down a bit (although nexus one seems ok)
I use the nexus mod live wallpaper off the market. It doesn't slow down my phone and it adds settings for color schemes.

I use it too and I don't feel as if it slows down.

just search for nexus one live wallpaper in the market. it's there.
The web browser on my Desire is slow and extremely slow when using secure sites like PayPal. I installed Opera but like to get the stock browser working as well.
Do I have to change some settings to get better performance ?
Thanks
Im not green as far as flashing goes, but Im curioius if anyone has seen any of the stellar Developers here implementing a IP masking browser. I use one on my home laptop, and as of yet have not seen one for Android, or a plugin.
-is it possible?
-is there already one out there?
-Much Thanks
Not sure about a browser but I do know there are TOR apps out there. You have to use two in combination in order for it to work right and it really slows down your data speeds.
I just recently got Tor (Orbot) working on my E4GT running Blazer ROM. Transparent proxying an Torifying everything works great for me. Although it does sacrifice a decent bit of anonymity, if you want faster speeds you can tell Orbot to only use entrance & exit nodes from within the United States ("{us}") and enable "Strict Nodes".
I had issues running Orbot on my phone initially, but found a workaround, which I posted @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1489042
Hello all, I am a Desire HD user for a year.
I am using Opera 10.1 beta which is the smoothest browser i have ever used.
I installed many browsers via market and i found that most of them are really
choppy, not as smooth as iPhone's safari even flash is disabled.(Or this problem can not be solved due to the hardware?)
So, I wonder if there are any browsers that would be better than Opera?
Thanks.
The reason the iPhone browser feels smoother is that as soon as your finger touches the screen all page rendering & element loading stops, whereas on Android it continues, hence the "choppy" feeling.

As for your actual question, I use CyanogenMod7 and the browser works normally, minor choppiness as per.
ive had many phones from windows mobile to android, and over the years the browser i continuously return to is opera mobile (which you cannot f***k with)
ive tried
dolphin
maxathon
stock
firefox
all the browsers suck bigtime compared to opera no matter what anyone says,
stick to opera mobile, it works well, its all in the rendering,
ive had alot of problems trying to log into certain sites with the above browsers, when i used opera no issues at all!
smooth browsers
I've tried loads of browsers for Android and I always come back to Opera, mini for speed or if u have slow internet and mobile for everyday browsing. Love it so much I'm using it for P.c aswell with the Opera link function keeps ur bookmarks synced over mobile and desktop. If u r on 10.1 beta I'd update if I were u there has probably been 8 or 9 updates since then a couple of them major ones. Current version is 11.5.3
I always use Opera too. I tried many as per this page.
For me Opera is superior because of its smoothness and pretty good speed.
If you are using ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) you could also try ICS Browser Plus from Beansoft, which is new.
From what I see, the stock browser (of Android 2.3 in HTC Desire HD) is pretty good -- it has decent speed, and it provides adequate "reflow" of text when you zoom a page.
Opera's speed is about the same, but the problem with Opera (at least the current version from Market) is that it always renders text formatted for "zoomed in" (as after double click) zoom level -- even if you zoom out, the columns width (in characters) remains the same, narrow. Which renders it less then usable IMHO . BTW, not sure why, I'm pretty sure I've see bundled versions of Opera on Windows Mobile, which rendered text with adequate reflow, I guess this is some marketing feature for them.
The rest of available browsers are just not very good from the performance standpoint. So with all the available choices, there is actually no good alternative to the stock one
Thank you guys, thanks for the information.
Hope that the stable ICS would release soon and bring our Desire HD to next level...

I see no need for this thread to exist as it is pointless. Everyone uses the apps that satisfy their own needs. It may be anyone, a dev, a user & a noob. Opinions differ & this thread may lead to pointless arguments as to which app is better in it's own regard, while every opinion is influenced by the touch of a personal preference . Better if the thread be closed.

Thread is not meant to argue over which app is better. In case of disputes such as those everyone just tries out both apps and keeps the one they prefer. Also, there is not a single person out there (or here) who's app selection hasn't in some way been influenced by the people he interacts with. This gives such people an opportunity to find out about and try out contemporaries to the apps that they are using. It gives you a sort of freedom, which is what makes Android SO much better than the iOS or ANY other phone OS available.
This also gives newbies a chance to find out what more experienced people prefer and why. Finding out the perfect apps for your new phone is way harder than it sounds, especially since they keep adding hundreds of apps every week.
Still, as you put it, you have your opinion and I have mine.
I created this thread to help people but if you still aren't convinced then feel free to report it to the Mods.

dropbox
play music
audiofx widget
bout all i really put back on after flashing
Opera mini
Root explorer
Setcpu
BLN pro

TERMINAL EMULATOR + BUSYBOX!!!
It's all that you need!
Apps which i keep regardless of roms:
-superuser is a must.
-es file explorer: great root explorer that has 'browse over lan'.
-set cpu: for setting cpu frequencies and governors with screen on/screen off profiles.
-Droidwall: simple intuitive firewall for limiting network traffic.
-Dropbox: cloud storage.
-link2sd (stock) or s2e (cyanogenmod): Apps for using the partitioned sd card and solve internal memory problems.
-terminal emulator: for the random stuff no other app will do.
Mods:
-adrenaline engine: pretty much an all-in-one performance boost with increase sd card read/write speeds, zipalign, better ram management, etc.
-cf-root kernel: for some reason it's always been the most reliable and stable kernel for me, with the best battery life (and I've tried lots of custom kernels).
Superuser
Mi File Exploer ( free root explorer )
aCalendar
Power Toggles

My Tracks

Adobe Reader
Kingsoft Office
Hmm... Common opinion is that ES File Explorer is the best, but have you guys tried out SolidExplorer yet? Apart from the inbuit music player it has much of the same functionality. The interface and the appearance is a big plus, especially the two panel system. I recommend having them both. Also, once you have these, they negate the need for Root Explorer.
Also, SuperSU might be a better option than SuperUser. It was built from scratch to specifically counter the problems that SU was facing. pointedly on the CM9 & CM10 ROMs. SuperSU also has faster and better interface.
Terminal Emulator is a good choice but the text warping is really bad.
Music player would be Player Pro (customisation), or Miui Player (the karoke style inbuilt lyrics reader is awesome!) and finally the UberMusic Player (nice appearance, small app, interface is good AND it's got this little list of upcoming songs that's invaluable)
FB Reader is a must. It remembers the page no. even after shutting off the phone and has lots of customisation options AND it smaller than most readers.:good::good::good:
Kingsoft Office, anyone who needs some project/office work done on the go knows exactly how amazing and necessary this app is.
Gmail is a necessity. period.
Script Manager is also a must, if you want to run V6 scripts and set up shortcut commands to scripts from Term.Emulator.
Games depend on the user, but don't all time classics like doodle jump, cut the rope, fruit ninja, angry birds and nin jump always have a place on our phones?
Finally, we have the Gapps (excluding Gmail). As we get better software, roms become bigger. Now the question is: which is the best "minimal GApps" pack out there??
Musicplayer: poweramp
Messaging: go SMS pro
Launcher: xperia home latest
Icon pack:sauve HD
Browser:UCbrowser
Doc viewer:documents to go 3.0
Calculator :real calc plus
