Guys,
Only got my Nexus yesterday and I am already loving to tweaks ontop of gingerbread. There are however a couple of areas which I am worse off in.
Mainly, I deal with a lot of zip files and never had a problem on my Desire HD but my Galaxy Nexus says
'You can't save or open this file because this type of attachment might contain malicious software'
Is there any deep security settings to get around this?
Any help much appreciated.
very strange. on my nexus one it let me download zip files, and then i used astro or total commander to extract them.

Are you downloading them from email? Ive just tried actually downloading a zip file and it opened ok , its just when one is attached to an email I have recieved...
Bump, this wouldnt be a prob for some dev to get it into a ROM would it?
Same problem here! This really sucks....every attachment can be malicious....i searched the settings for my virus scanner and my .zip program. There was nothing....
Did you have any luck changing this setting? This is really annoying and I have not yet seen any other posts beside this one.
subscribing to thread!
Have the same problem too, both in my gmail and my work (Exchange) account.
GRRRR
OMG THIS IS ANNOYING! I have a Galaxy S with CM9, doesn't work either
Should be able to download them zipped then open them with a root file explorer right?

No, The Gmail app and the Email app literally do not let you download the file at all...

Hmm that's crazy.
Yup, I noticed that and was annoyed instantly. It only effects the app. The best work around is to open up gmail on the browser and download the file thru there. Works perfect.
Yeah unfortunately I deal with .zip files on my work exchange account a lot, and this cannot be accessed through the browser because the Outlook Web Access does not perform well on a mobile browser (let a lone a desktop browser). So if I am mobile or roaming somewhere I cannot download any zips. At all. Screw you Google, you've really pissed me off here. Make sure you don't go down the Apple path...
I notice the zip problem today, very annoying!!! it's also really stupid blocking every zip file attached... i think that this problem should be notice to google for a good solution!
are there any alternative exchange email program on market?

There are several alternatives like Roadsync, Moxier mail and Touchdown. Not sure if this works on them, but I'd imagine it would. This is an insane restriction and Google really needs to get a grip.
i have the same problem ever since i upgraded to ice cream sandwich on my asus transformer prime tf201. before the upgrade i could download zip files from email app but now it says info and when clicked what you are seeing. sucks and no reason why this should be happening now. they need to fix this asap.
I agree this is retarded. I'm not 12 years old, I don't open files I don't already trust and expect. Really pisses me off when companies, people or governments try to protect me from myself.
apktool
Decompile with apktool
Code:
apktool d -r Email.apk
edit the file Email\smali\com\android\emailcommon\utility\AttachmentUtilities.smali
delete the code between
Code:
.line 94
and
Code:
sput-object v0, Lcom/android/emailcommon/utility/AttachmentUtilities;->UNACCEPTABLE_ATTACHMENT_EXTENSIONS:[Ljava/lang/String;
and replace it with
Code:
new-array v0, v3, [Ljava/lang/String;
and finally recompile with apktool
Code:
apktool b Email Email.apk
Code:
The change basically modifies the string which holds the 'malicions' extensions to be an empty string.
inspired by looking at the source code here http://grepcode.com/file/repository...Utilities.0UNACCEPTABLE_ATTACHMENT_EXTENSIONS
This worked for me on CM9 Samsung Galaxy SII
I also wiped cache and dalvik-cache before replacing the Email.apk from CWM
Try downloading download all files from the market see if that works

You'll just have to access it through the browser. Also File Manager can view zip files without extracting them.
I bought a license for TitaniumBackup Pro and they emailed me a zip file containing the license. I'm now using a GN and I can't download the zip file because its a potentially dangerous file type.
Without access to a PC, how do I get thiis license?
What email are you using? Email app, gmail app.. webmail?
My CM7 gmail won't let me download attached zip files so i use the Browser, Mobile Gmail page instead.
Gmail and built-in email app.
Will try the browaer method!
Look on the market for an app called Save My Attach. It should let you save any attachment regardless of file type. There's also another app i use called Attach My Files or it may just be called Attachments. That app lets me attach anything i want in Gmail. Make sure the TB license TXT file is in the root of your sdcard when you run TB for the first time so it applies the license. Good luck.
Save my Attach. Great tip, thanks!
Well save my attach would be great if it worked. I just sent myself a zip file and got the same error LOL. I think i like the 2.3.x version better.
*Includes version for Android 4.0.4 now*
I know some people do not like the remote management restrictions that are applied to their Android devices when they hook up their Email application to Exchange.
Many enterprising developers have developed Email.apk's that ignore any remote management restrictions without limiting access to Exchange email. In other words, you can use your work email without having to put a password into your device, or encrypt your data, or whatnot.
Now, I do not advocate you do this; I don't do it. If you do it and get caught, you may very well be fired!
In any case, if you're still interested in this, then you may download the modified Email.apk's for 2.3.5 and 2.3.6
Instructions:
1. Make sure you're rooted
2. Using Root Explorer, in /System/App rename Email.apk and Email.odex to Email.apk.bak and Email.odex.bak (needed in case you ever need to restore the original)
2. Extract the appropriate zip file for your OS version that you've just downloaded
3. Take the resulting Email.apk file and copy it to your device
4. Using Root Explorer, copy the new Email.apk to /System/App
5. Reboot and set-up your Exchange info again, you should not have any restrictions any more!
Note: I do not take credit for this. I used rustamabd's excellent Email.apk modifier at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117452. I'm just providing the modified Email.apks specific for the Captivate Glide for your convenience.
Moderators: This should probably go under Development, but I do not have access. Could you move this?
Moderators?
It's now been updated for ICS by the way.
Will these APKs fit Samsung SGS1 (stock GB 2.3.6)?
4.0.4 fail
Hi, I tried above procedure on my 4.0.4 (HTC Sensation). Could it be there is no 'Email.odex.bak' in system/app?
Just renaming the Email.apk and copying the version from the zip did not do the trick for me. No email client shown after reboot,
Renaming the original Email.apk did restore the client.
Edit: cas my rom is deodexed that's why. Got it to work through another procedure: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117452 (don't forget to change file permissions as set on original .apk files :fingers-crossed
I'd recommend to use TochDown, as soon as it is not free you can try the trial version.
It also allows to get his calendars events outside of the app, so it really convinient.
A word of warning:
If you handle information your employer considers confidential, there's a very good chance that their IT department will find out that you're using this hack, and it's very likely to result in your termination, which may even be followed by legal action. Opt for IMAP/POP3 if at all possible; if Exchange is a requirement, request a company-provided device.
Be careful out there.
I am using Samsung Galaxy SL GB2.3.6 and tried using the email app which you have enclosed.
But when i replaced my stock email apk with your email apk, i get an error "email app force closed".
Only one difference I found out is, my system/app folder didn't have email.odex file.
Could you provide some suggestions
Thanks

Hi!
These files are for the Samsung Captivate Glide specifically. If you wish to update for another phone, follow the link I included in my original post. You can generate for each phone individually.

Hello, I was wondering if anyone knew about how to check if a rom had OBEX Message Access from looking at the .zip install file.
I know that for ICS cm9 and aokp has this supported. But I wanted to check the .zip files instead of installing the rom and then running a terminal.
I've looked already and i couldnt find any exchange mail bypass from the stock email app. Do uknow anyone that has the apk or zip file for no passcode email. THANKS
