[GUIDE] 11/22/2010 - Restore Swype after upgrading to CyanogenMod

If you were like me, you rushed right into installing CyanogenMod. Whoops, found out there is no swype installed. What to do?
Hopefully you made a nandroid backup like me. I didn't want to do a full nandroid restore just to extract the files. So I did this...

UPDATED 11/22/2010 - Okay, some people have requested a "newbie friendly" solution. I have created an APK which will help automate this procedure, without the need for ADB. If you have already applied CyanogenMod, then use this APK to select an older Clockwork Backup that has your licensed Swype. It will then extract and install the files for you. I have only tested on the G2.

I'll possibly do some updates to:
a) cache swype for future installs (to make restores super quick)
b) add other extractions of 'your' saved files (i.e. google apps)
c) add more options for handling cache/files/etc.

adb remount
# Push the swype files back to your Android device
adb push ./system/lib/libSwypeCore.so /system/lib/
adb push ./system/app/Swype.apk /system/app/
# Some users have had issues with not seeing Swype in the options (possibly non read/write system?), so they just installed the APK. If you install it, make sure the lib file has been pushed first.
# i.e. adb install /sdcard/Swype.apk
# Update permissions for good measure (may not be needed)
chmod 644 /system/app/Swype.apk
chmod 644 /system/lib/libSwypeCore.so
# I rebooted, but have heard reports that it is not necessary
adb reboot
# Now in Menu>Settings:Language & keyboard unselect the Android keyboard and make sure Swype keyboard is checked.
A similar process can be done directly on your phone.

Did you push libSwypeCore.so to /system/lib yet?

For some reason it still doesn't show up in the keyboard list, any idea why?

Ok, what you're supposed to do is, you actually have to install the swype.apk. its not enough to copy it to the /system/app directory adb install Swype.apk or use root file explorer click on the apk file and choose install.

or you can open up cyanogenmod(unzip) and download a stock g2 rom and then just put the files in the proper places, then zip cm again and flash(i did this all from my phone ast night because i was too lazy to go to the computer)

have you tried to go to swype.com and signing up for there beta testing. Not sure if still open but does not hurt to try. I reinstall from the beta testing website and is working great on CM6.1 on my G2

Be more specific. What have you done so far? Did you go into Settings > Keyboard and enable Swype yet?

I tried a few times before but could never get this dumb unyaffs to work for me.

Yea, it wasn't there, again, in my case pushing it in to the /app folder did NOT work, I had to intall the apk maually like any other app. Of course only after pushing the lib file.

Unyaffs is supposed to work on windows? I didn't know that. I use linux, you sould try it and get used to it, it would save you a lot of trouble.

Hmmm... I saw the swype in the settings after doing adb pushes and a reboot.
In reality, I had unchecked both Android keyboard, and Swype keyboard. Then went to a text field, and got a request for Android input. I then went back into settings and checked Swype, and then it just worked. I didn't need to install the APK. For those not seeing swype as an option, did you confirm that system was remounted and that files were copied? Did you reboot?
As for unyaffs, I was lazy. I just downloaded a binary for OSX from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7931772 . I haven't tried a Windows version of unyaffs.

thats kinda sucks. lil more trouble then I was hoping for but I got a few LiveCDs somewhere.
How hard would it be to get this running through adb shell, on the phone? lol

wilnotdie - You should be able to do this directly on your phone, as well. Of course, you would need to mount your system read/write and cp files versus adb push.
i.e.
mount -o rw,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk0p25 /system
cp /sdcard/nandtmp/system/lib/libSwypeCore.so /system/lib/libSwypeCore.so
cp /sdcard/nandtmp/system/app/Swype.apk /system/app/Swype.apk

Oh mybad, not that way. Was thinking of using the phone as my linux box instead of a pc. In theory it should work, just need to compile for use on the phone?
But Im guessing its not gonna be this ez lol

I didn't do any ADB pushes I just used root explorer to move the libswype file to lib directory then used the installer on the root explorer to install and it loaded right up for me. Only problem I'm getting is the double tap to edit isn't working now for some reason.

Okay here is what I did and it worked. Using SU File manager (found in the market if you search "root explorer") and on the stock ROM, copy the lib and apk files from /system/app and /system/lib. I copied them to the root of my sd card. Wipe everything and install CM and the addon. Grab SU File manager again and find the lib file on your SD card. copy it. There are two little buttons on the top of SU File manager with an S and a D. I pressed both of them to mount system and data as read/write. Go to system/lib and paste the lib file. Verify that it is there and since there are so many files sort by size its like 998kb. Then just use SU File Manager or astro or whatever to find Swype.apk on your sd card. Install it from there. With Astro click it and "open app manger." Then go to keyboard settings and enable it as an input method. Go to swype settings and it should not FC if you did this stuff correctly. Set your settings and enjoy! Oh yea dont forget to uninstall and refund SU File manager

Worked flawlessly and now I have swype running on CM. This should be stickied or something!

You can use root explorer. Download one of the stock roms. Access it through root explorer and copy the 2 files from the stock rom folders to its respective folder on your device. Then install the apk from within root explorer. Set everything up in your keyboard settings and your golden. Can be done in minutes.

how to install htclockscreen.apk?

I deleted the htclockscreen.apk saved it to sd card and now I want to reinstall it... how do I do this... I click it and it says cannot be installed...

Have you tried pushing the app to the data/app folder via adb?

I would just use a terminal emulator and move it back. I personally haven't treid it but should still work. Or just move it back with a root explorer
If you have a terminal emulator app just open it up

Cd to where you saved the apk on your sd card
Mv htclockscreen.apk /system/app/
I am pretty sure that its in system/app anyway. Sorry my evo is powered off but that's where its at on my shift. Once its there just reboot the phone. It should be back the way was. Hope that helps.
Guess I should clarify that you don't need to actually install it. You just need to get it back into the directory that it needs to be in then reboot

If your not sure about that buy root explore from the market name just copy and paste.

I have root explorer and have replaced it in there again... but it does not work... it shows its in there but wont install... any thoughts?

As trentlythp said, you dont actually "install" the .apk. It just has to be in the /system/app folder. Try copying the htclockscreen.apk to that folder then reboot and see what happens.

Livewallpaper on Bonsai

Hi All,
I was wondering if I could put out a request for some APKs. I would like to have live wallpapers on Bonsai and have tried putting livewallpaper.apk and the picker into my Epic but I don't have Root Explorer and I can't seem to change the permissions on those files. Right now all of the APKs I found have Read Yes Write Yes and the other one No. All of the APKs in my app directory have Read Yes Write No and other one No. Could someone post those APKs with permissions set like that? I don't know if that is my exact problem or if it is worth it to buy RE for only that purpose.

I believe its been mentioned before that ES File Explorer brings most of the Root Explorer functionality for free. I could be wrong though since ive never tried it myself. Worth a shot though if its just a permissions issue.

U can also use sdx stock app removal app, just put the apk in the adx folder on the SD card and go Into the app then to manage backups and got restore

Thanks. I have tried everything. I could not change the permissions using sdx or ES File manager. All I could do with those programs was access the system directories. Unless I am doing something wrong, I will either need to get Root Explorer and change the permissions or get altered livewallpaper apks.

I think the frankenstine rom thread has a flashable zip for live wallpapers

OK. I think I may be confusing some people.
I would like to have Live Wallpapers in Bonsai since it's been removed. I did some research and found that you need to install the livewallpaper apks into the system/app directory. The solution was to make sure the permissions in the livewallpaper apks was exactly the same as the permissions as the other apks in the apps directory. This is very easy to solve. Go to midnight rom and download it to computer. Open up the midnight extras folder and you will find lots of zip files in there that are all flashable in CWM. Just extract the folder, then copy the live wallpaper zips you want onto your sd card, then flash in CWM.
Alternatively, what I normally do is download the rom you want to flash (Bonsai). Open it up on your pc. Navigate to system/apps. Paste the livewallper apks into that directory. Then flash normally. This will include any files you want in the system/app folder.

7zip (windows) is what u want to use 2 open the zip but DO NOT EXTRACT it!!! Well in 7zip paste the apks u want into system/apps. Then close 7zip. Move the rom 2 ur sdcard and flash as u would normaly. U can also replace the boot/shutdown animation and a few other parts of the rom that you can add or subtract stuff from. I hope this help as not to sound offensive but u seem a bit newbish and 7zip isa great tool for viewing zip files w/o extracting them took me a good deal of time 2 find this handy tool, hope this helps ya out...

I tried all of the cut and pasting techniques. None of them worked. I came across this online:

Here are the .zips from the midNIGHT ROM extras folder... Flash one of these, should work.
But the adb method works just as well... Maybe even faster.

Root Explorer Error

I just unlocked, rooted and restored all files in my nexus. I went into root Explorer to delete unwanted files and am getting a delete failed error every time I try to delete a file. Also my screen shots are no longer saving it says storage is in use. Anybody experience anything like this after rooting?

Are you trying to delete system files? Do you have SU installed? Are you clicking the R/W option. More details please.....

Several people have reported the issue with screen shot, to fix it they've had to rename the pictures folder(Seems like the folder is read only).
Swiftkey'ed on my CM9 Galaxy Nexus

No system files just old pictures, music files and other misc. It is set as r/w, also I am getting a few apps saying I need storage available that is writable. Something has to be up with the internal storage not allowing me to access or write to it.

Root explorer - How to text edit
Hi All,
I have a problem with my root explorer. I am not able to open a file to edit. If i long press on a file , i dont get any option to open/edit the file.
i was supposed to edit gps.conf file under /system/etc but unable to do so from root explorer.
PS: i mount r/w from the root explorer every time i try..

If you have any directories/files that you can't modify or delete, then boot into CWM recovery, plug in the USB cable, go into adb shell. Also make sure that /data is mounted in the CWM mounts menu. Then:
cd /data/media
chown -R media_rw.media_rw *

i'm having this crazy "delete failed" error every time i try to delete any file in sdcart, external, and root directory (copy-paste, root, permissions works fine )
i tried to delete any remains of root explorer with es file explorer ((which works fine btw so its not a problem of partitions i think), re installed the program again but its the same . Flashed the rom from the beginning with a full wipe but its the same
this error happened first when i updated from blackmart alpha to some rootexplorer v.99. I uninstalled that but it left this error
Any idea what is causing that

I found a way to delete the files you suggest using Root Explorer. Go into /data/media/<navigate to the directory that you want to delete files>.. make sure the folder is mounted as r/w and delete the files you want to delete. This is how I bypassed the delete failed issue in Root Explorer...

There is a thread in theme section with the stock keyboard... with auto correct, , and long opress for secondary symbol. OR type arsaw and look for his thread..am driving right now, I'll supply the link later if you don't find it

Don't know what ROM you are on... your knowledge of pushing apps to /system (ie., via adb), etc., so I'm attaching the stock samsung keyboard (plain grey) with auto-correct functionality. You need to be rooted at least. Copy the attached apk to your phone... then, using your favorite root file manager (like Root Explorer, etc) copy to /system folder first... fix permissions to rw.r..r.. then, MOVE to /system/app. It will ask if you want to replace the current "SamsungIME.apk", answer yes. You should be good to go.

Yes I am rooted and thanks for helping im coming from a z10 lol. perfect I will do that right away. im on stock rom touch wiz called I think 4.1.2

ok im a noob tho new to all this. So I downloaded your link. Zip file right? Do I put the whole zip on my phone storage? then flash? I downloaded room file manager and cant find /system apps. Sorry for these probably stupid questions. When I open the zip there are are a few folders.

Those are folders/files in the flashable zip. Let's try the simpliest approach first.
1. Download "Root Explorer (File Manager) from the PlayStore, and install
2. From my post #6 above, save the attached file (SamsungIME.apk)... on your phone's sdcard
3. Open Root Explorer, and navigate to the folder on your phone (sdcard) where you put the SamsungIME.apk... long press it, then select "Copy"
4. now while still within Root Explorer, navigate to /system folder, and hit "Paste" (make sure you mount as R/W.. it's the button at the top. If you are mounted as Read Only, you'll get an error message "You cannot past here because the file system is read only". Just hit the "Mount R/W" toggle at the top of screen.
5. Now, "SamsungIME.apk" is in your /system folder. You need to fix permissions. Long press "SamsungIME.apk" and select "Permissions". There are boxes with green check marks. toggle the boxes so that you only have green check marks in: Owner: R W ; Group: R ; Others: R. Hit "OK"
6. Now, long press "SamsungIME.apk" file again, and select "Move"
7. Navigate to /system/app (you should already be in /system, so just tap the "app" folder
8. Make sure you are still mounted as "R/W", if so, tap the "Paste" key at bottom. this will put "SamsungIME.apk" in the /system/app folder
9. if you did all this correctly, you should be good to go...

Okay I tried finall got it in the right system folder like u explained I attach a picture. Its still not working. Do I just need to reboot or flash? I use goo manager.
Hope I didnt do anything wrong while moving it to app system

It appears you are not understanding some of the android basics...and that can be extremely dangerous... especially since you are rooted. From you screenshot, you show zip files in your /system folder. Per my previous post, I stated to copy "SamsungIME.apk" to /system... fix permissions... then MOVE to /system/app. Your screenshot shows zip files in your /system folder (i.e., "SamsungIME.zip"). My attachment is the apk file itself. So apparently when you downloaded, it zipped it for compression purposes. YOU NEED THE APK. I suspect it is inside that zip file.. so you'll need to know how to unzip that zip.. and get the ".apk" The APKs goes into the /system/app folder (Not /system). Try again, and get the SamsungIME.apk out of that zip... copy that apk to /system.. fix permissions... then move (not copy) to /system/app (it's a sub folder within /system). If this didn't work, you have done something wrong.

Damn I had the feeling some was wrong. So should I get that out of the system folder? How do I do that ? I cant delete or move them. Does it harm if I leave them there? Ya im trying that now how yiu explained the apk I get it . Thanks alot tho for ur patients

I use Root Explorer... if you long press the file, you get the option to delete file. Delete the ".zip" files in /system folder. Your screenshot looks like ES File Explorer (or something similar). You should be able to "select" that zip file, then delete. Go back to my Post#6 and download the APK file (SamsumgIME.apk)... do not zip it... you should be able to download file as apk. Then follow my previous instructions. Again, get the APK file (not .zip) to /system folder.... then fix permissions... then MOVE (don't copy or you will leave a copy of the apk behind in /system) to /system/app folder. System apk files belong in the app subfolder of system (/system/app). When you go to paste the apk in /system/app, you will be asked to replace existing file... replace it. Try again... report back.

Ok thanks will do that tomorow . I use es explorer yes. When I try to delete it says file cannot be deleted. Cant see any apk file I use windows 8 maybe tahts why?
