[Q] Unrooting the G2 after OTA update. - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I perm-rooted my G2. As one does.
I then installed the OTA, thinking it'd probably either fully unroot or the root would stick around.
Sadly, it's somewhere in between. The device thinks it's rooted whenever something tries to root, but it isn't and it fails any time something actually tries to make use of root permissions.
So, I installed VISIONary r12. I tried to get it to unroot or redo a permaroot, and it doesn't do either. Doesn't even attempt them. Or maybe it does, but nothing happens. Then when I try to temp root, it says it's already rooted, same as in r11.
Is there anyway to fix this up? I tried searching and I couldn't find anything.

From what I've read, there's a VISIONary r13 that's floating around that bypasses the 'already rooted' check. I can't confirm if it'll fix your issue. Newbie myself.

Here's hoping they're not lying, though it does make sense that such a feature would exist. Thanks for the info!
QUICK EDIT!
VISIONary r13 fixed this up. I had to temp root twice to get root in, then permaroot worked fine.

Rooting Problems

I had my phone rooted and decided to unroot to get the OTA update which I did, but I tried rooting the phone again and I can't no longer root the phone.
Has any one experience this before?
Can I use unrevoked?
i dont know about unrevoked. if you do the factory reset and reroot using toasts method, there is a stock rom you can flash that has the OTA update biult in that will allow you to keep the root. all of the info is on the first page where toast describes the rooting process. hope this helps.
I guess there is no way to revoked so I can root my phone again. I like to learn if this is possible I guess, I will miss the tether app that I enjoy so much.
Please any one
I am still trying to root my evo after installing the OTA and have not been able to root it again.
Can anyone help if possible?
I will appreciate any suggestions at this point
Thanks in advance
how to unroot
i tried rooting my phone last night and it messed up, i think.. i know the root didnt work. how can i get my phone back to stock? I am new with androids and not sure what im really doin
You can use the unrevoked method if you are just mainly using it for the tether app.
http://unrevoked.com/m/
then click the image to install it.
un root
i just would like to get my phone back to stock, i did the unrevoked root, then tried to do a ROM, and the rom part did take all the way. I still have the ROM Manager app still on my phone.. should i delete that
Just use this and it will bring u back to stock - remember google search is your friend

Getting rid of Unrevoked root

I installed unrevoked root. I thought root goes away on reboot, but im guessing unrevoked devs updated it and prevented root from going away on reboot. I uninstalled unrevoked (the app itself) and i thought that was the way to get rid of the root, but superusepermissions is still there.
how do i get rid of unrevoked root!? i thought it was temporary!
i used it just to use overclockwidget, which btw didnt get my phone improving on battery life
It doesn't have root the superuser app needs to be uninstalled as well.

[Q] Evo with Hboot 2.10 and S/W 3.70. Want to temp root to remove apps, any options?

Hello all!
First I am not new to flashing and/or hacking phones I have done many back in my WM and other phone days, just somewhat new to Android
I have looked around and I think I already know whats up but I can't say I have seen this question asked yet...I did search
Here we go,
I have an Evo with Hboot 2.10 Stock sprint flash (as in from the sprint store) and I updated to S/W 3.70 with out first checking to see what it had...(yea stupid of me )
What I want to do is Temp root into the phone, use Ti backup or whatever to make a back up of the stock apps and then remove them. I only want to remove the sprint tv,nascar, blockbuster and other apps that I don't use that don't tie into the rest of the OS.
I tried with Z4root but seeing as I have S/W 3.70 not much happens
I don't really care to flash to new rom as I am happy with the stock flash just want to get rid of apps I will never use.
So far my only option is to wait from what I have looked up,I just wanted to know if I could execute my plan with out a full system flash.
Thank you for your time and if anyone needs more info I will be glad to give it!
Yes, it seems 3.70 has patched the exploit that z4root was using to get temp root. Until the devs find a way to get a new exploit you'll have to wait.
With the rate these Devs work, I'd give it a week and you should be able to root your phone
Thanks!
I figured that was what I would have to do,but it never hurts to ask
A quick update.
It seems as if Z4root still does work even with the 3.70 OTA update...
I was searching around on Google and found people with this exact set up that had been able to temp root.
Not sure on the why yet but I had to do a reset to factory default first in order to get z4root to give me temp root(Maybe something from the update was hanging around on the phone blocking z4??). I then fired up TI backup and started to remove the Sprint stock apps I don't use and and a few other save to remove ones!
So if anyone is looking to stay on the stock sprint rom and has S/W 3.70 this might work for you as well!
And now I am fully rooted and running the sprintlovers rom. I was able to follow the guides here and get my phone flashed up.
If anyone has the same set up and needs help let me know!
How did you get permanent root on 3.70? I was going to try the'savior' adb method, but I'm afraid of bricking. I did just download unrevoked's new beta root though. I might try that when I get home
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
how did you get root? I'm thinking of the savior method too (same evo specs). I'm guessing you used that since you're on sprintlovers?

Please Help With Superuser and Root Problems

My phone has bieng acting up really weird lately, an update came out for it but ever since that update(my phone was rooted when this update took place), my apps that require root no longer work properly and superuser keeps denying every app without prompt, some apps like terminal emulator and root checker say it is not rooted even though hboot is unlocked and security is S-OFF. I can't flash roms like CWM to fix super user, and I've tried everything with super user but nothing works. I've tried everything that I've read on the forums. Please Help!!!
Sounds like you took an OTA update. Terrible idea. RUU back to stock and reroot.
So does that mean my hboot is all borked up? And if so how can I fix it?

Temproot FYI

Being the complete amateur that I am, I decided to unfreeze Updater and allow my M8 to upgrade to 4.4.3, thinking that I could reroot it after the update without any trouble. I really do not use root access very often, so it was not a big deal to find out that I could not without buying Sunshine. Then I realized that without root, I could not unfreeze apps that I had previously frozen, and did not want to chance uninstalling my freezer and having those apps lost in oblivion. So...
If you download Sunshine and install it, run it, and it will allow you to temproot without asking for payment. You can then install Superuser (the ChainsDD version works, the Chainfire version doesn't) from the store, and then use your apps that require root access. Of course, you lose root every time you reboot, but its better than no root at all. Sadly, firewater still does not work (it laughed at me for using OTA, and rightfully so).
Btw, I hope this wasn't posted somewhere else. I looked, seriously, but I'd hate to be "that guy".
Well the other option is also available. You don't need s-off to gain root access.
Your method is an option but you could also flash superuser.zip via the custom recovery which can be flashed if you have a unlocked bootloader.
I'll have to take your word for it. LIke I said, I'm an amateur at best. I don't (to my knowledge) have an unlocked bootloader, no fancy roms or custom boot screens. I'm not even sure what s-off means or firewater does, just thought I would give it a shot. It was my first time messing with sdk and command line adb, which was actually pretty cool.
Edit: In an effort to relieve my ignorance, I now know what s-off means and what firewater does. Sadly, unlocking my bootloader would mean deleting all of my personal data and apps (I couldn't care less about the warranty). Maybe I'll mess around with it on my old razr the next time I'm bored. Thanks!
