My internal memory says it needs to be formatted - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

All of a sudden last week it said it needed to be formatted. I can't really access anything on it either. And ever since then, no pictures I take are being saved. Should I format it? And what can happen if I do?

If you format it, you will lose all data on it. But if it don't work and it says that it needs to be formatted then I guess you'll have to format it. I have hooked it up to a different computer and been able to get the files before but it's a long shot. Good luck

[Q] Has anyone else had this problem?

This issue has been plaguing me for weeks now.
When I take pictures while on a custom ROM, the pictures aren't visible on the card after viewing the first set on the computer. If I take pics after a fresh install, you can see them on the computer. After I disconnect and take more pictures and then connect to the computer, the pics aren't there. The weird thing is, I can see them on the phone. Then I finally found out that if I reboot the phone, I can then see them on the computer, WTF. Also when I take the second set, when I connect as a disk drive, the card comes up with a scan and fix error box.
I also restored my stock nandroid and everything works fine. I can take all the pics I want.
I've tried several roms and I'm exhausted. I'm also thinking it may have something to do with the card being partitioned. I have a 4gb, unpartitioned card, in my wifes phone and it's working fine. I had to buy her a new card and when I partitioned it, it did the same thing that mine is doing.
Can anyone help me figure this out? Thanks
I would say make a backup of your sd card, re-format it, but don't partition it. I've run a few roms and I've never had an issue without partitioning. I hope that helps.

I've done all that. BTW, what is the best way to format? I can't get it to format through the phone, only the computer.

[Q] HELP! - Woke up to a blank sd card - RAW data

Woke up this morning to my alarm not working (no big deal).
Checked my phone, said it was unable to mount the sd card.
Tried to access files from recovery - unable to mount sd card.
Checked sd card in computer, no file system found (RAW), required formatting.
Checked sd card in Kubuntu and was unable to mount it.
Finally found a recovery software program and ran that; found photos and some vids, but in generic folder/file names (i.e. DIR01/JPEG001).
Is there ANYTHING I can do at this point?
I tried formatting the drive in Windows and then ran a recovery again and found some more files (maybe 1/3 of my Titanium backup files, the .apk.gz file types; almost all seem corrupted though).
Am I stuck reformatting and starting over? I had just done a nandroid backup last week and now that seems to be gone, too.
As of now I have been able to access the sd card through an adb shell and pushed the newest MIKG ROM and flashed that successfully. But I'm still without any of my apps, data, pics, and everything else.
Any help is appreciated.
If that data was corrupt, then unfortunately its lost, and you'll have to unfortunately format it again.
I was afraid of that.
Well, guess I get to start off the new year with a "new" phone.

When mine did that it wasn't too long before I had to replace the card itself... good luck but be wary!!

SDcard

Ok. haven't seen anything similar so figured new post.. so here goes:
went to install a new rom.. went in and did normal wiping
wipe cache
wipe davlik
factory reset
wipe system
reboot and redo
After i did this (ive done this many times no issues..) twrp stopped recognizing my ext sdcard... luckly i had a rom on my internal and was able to at least load something.. i put root explorer back on and it too does not see an ext card... i took my card out and put it in my laptop and at first it didnt see it.. i put another sd card in the laptop and it saw it.. so took it out and then out my 32gb back in and it sees it.. right now im copying everything off it to back it up..
when i put the 16gb in phone, sees it fine.. i put the 32gb back in it and phone doesnt see it.. again did the same as above with laptop.. at first doesnt see it unless i put the 16 in first then take it out..
anyone got any thoughts on what i might need to do?
wondering if i should format it and see if that fixes it

corrupted external SD card?

I was listening to a podcast in Doubletwist and when it finished, I went to delete it.
Once I did this, my phone lost access to the external card (which is where the podcasts download to).
I tried to pull up the card in root explorer and then I rebooted and tried it in recovery. It was not recognized.
I pulled the card and tried it in a friend's phone, and it gave the message that the card filesystem was corrupt or missing, do you want to format?
I don't want to format because I have all my pictures backed up to the card. As I don't have a converter handy to plug into the card reader on my work laptop, I have to wait until tonight to try it at home. Unfortunately, my fear is that the data on the card will be lost regardless.
Does anyone have any suggestions on ways to try to get to the files on the card, or am I just screwed and need to format?
if u just want your pictures and don't really care about anything else on the card, use an application for windows called testdisk on it. Its free and when u download it an app called photo rec is included, that'll recover your pics
if you want EVERYTHING on the card do ALOT of research into tools that can scan and possibly restore partition tables as from you description that seems that's what's corrupt. Be careful with these ones though as some inexperience can cause more harm than good.
if u don't mind paying there is a specific application suited for your task called cardrecovery.
my advice? option 1 if u want easy free, 3 if u want reasonably easy and don't mind paying, and 2 if u don't mind spending some time learning, difficult and possibly free. all ranked in that order
I'll give those options a shot. Really it's the pictures that I don't want to lose.
Thanks for the suggestions!

use chkdsk /r after connecting your device to your computer. if it is detected, this should get you back all your data. this happened to me a couple of times and i was able to recover the data using this.

for a phone DO NOT do this. It can result in recovered files yes, but it is also an intrusive method that can corrupt your data further, highly unrecommended. the non invasive techniques I recommended are better to try first
Would that method work if I intend to reformat the card once the data is recovered?

no because it could ruin the data before u even get a chance to see it, I know, its happened to me. chkdsk is not the best file recovery method and it wasn't intended to be. its meant to repair a damaged file system table
I looked up cardrecovery, and one of the reviews pointed to a free app called "zero assumption recovery" that supposedly worked as well. Gave it a go, but it was unable to recover anything.
Right now I'm running testdisk and keeping my fingers crossed.
Testdisk also came up empty.
I ran chkdsk /x/f j:
It wasn't able to do anything because the file system is RAW.
Windows also was unable to format the card.
Downloading SD Formatter to see if that will work.
And negative. This gets better and better.
As a final note, I plugged my card into a friend's phone and was able to format it. Not sure why my phone wouldn't allow me to, but it works now. Unfortunately, I lost all the files that were on it.
photorec didn't work? wow sorry to hear that bud. I checked out zero assumption recovery, but it seemed like more of a general recovery tool, card recovery was specifically designed for SD cards and removable memory storage. oh well, sorry I couldn't help more

You get an A for effort, but my card was not meant to be recovered. It sucks to lose the files, but not the end of the world.
Thanks for the suggestions, they are good ideas for hopefully resolving future disk issues, and at a minimum, I have more tools available if something like this happens again.

What could be causing files names to change and loose all data on SDCard

Good afternoon everyone.
About a month ago, I noticed that my music, videos and picture folders names were changed(renamed) to this
strange names.
I could not have access to my camera pictures, my movies or some music files.
I am attaching a picture screen shot so you can see.
So I lost all the pictures I had taken with the camera from the last 3 to 4 months. I did not make a backup
since January.
I decided to start fresh and did a cashe wipe, dalvik cache wipe, a factory reset, a system wipe, an internal wipe
and even an internal data format.
I also took the SD Card out and wiped everything there and re formatted the card.
Installed everything back in and now about a month later, this happens again.
Something has re written some file names, and wiped out the data in the folders and they will not display or
play.
I am thinking it could be a virus.
I have installed programs like photosphere camera, snoozy, note 10.0 note pad, and some programs that change my
battery, and task bar.
Does anyone has an idea of what this problem could be?
Any idea or help is appreciated.
Never seen this before, but I am interested to see what it is if anyone can figure it out.
Does it happen to be a 64gb sandisk, I had the same issue with my files getting corrupt, lost all my stuff. Reformated fat32 and has be solid for the past 3 months.

It is a Scandisk 64G but I had it format to fat32.
I tried to remove the files with a file explorer and also a root explorer, even the recovery explorer and it
will not let me do it.
I am going to wait until I get home and use my micro sd adapter card reader and delete the files from
my PC.
Funny thing is this corrupt files stick to your card and I think is more like a virus than hardware related.
The file name gets changed, the data erased and then file becomes read only and the devise can not delete
it or change the files.
Seems to be doing it to the video, sound and pictures folder only.
Bad SD card, same thing happens to pc hard drives when they go ka-put. Virus will also do it... but i see that as being unlikely. Just replace the sd card.

Corrupted File allocation table. First, put it in a pc, go to a command prompt (windows r and type cmd), then chkdsk -f driveletter: (depends on what your machine mounts it as). That could fix it, if not, copy all data off, reformat, copy data back. If that doesn't work, then the above poster is correct, the card is going bad, and replace it. (But it might not be, fat16 and fat32 can do this sometimes, especially if it's not unmounted cleanly when android is shutting down.)

Thank you both.
It is a 2 month old card but nothing is perfect.
I spent most of the day wiping the phone and the card and re flashing everything.
I am going to do a back up and get a new card this coming week.
Will post back once I see if it happens again.
SD card is bad. Buy a new one. 100% sure this is the issue.
Also, sandisk is no longer a quality card. Don't buy them, get a PNY.
Good luck brother
