need help - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok I have done the manual root method, (by zikronix ) was getting radio_pu errors but i had root access and s-off, could not use a rom it would error out, i had to use the stock 3.30 pc36img.zip from (aegiswa
http://www.morninglion.com/tp2martin...209_signed.zip from ) to make my phone work. So phone is working and I tried flashing (fresh, calkulins) rom, every time i load into recovery it says (E: invalid command argument), i have a hw 003, im glad i have root. but i cannot use a custom rom and when this new update keeps asking me to install it fails, and when i tried to dl the one provided and apply through recovery it failed and i had to reload the pc36img
this is becoming a hassle. can anyone help!! also when i make a recovery point just 30 min ago after reinstall and removing base apps, my phone restarted failed and i had to reload again.
i get this when loading a rom
assert failed: write_raw_image("/tmp/boot.img". "boot")
E:error in /sdcard/fresh-evo-3.4.0.1.zip
status 7
install aborted

you need to post in the right forum...

Try downloading the file again; it may be corrupted. Did it give you the same exact error when you tried Caulkin's rom?

i tried to delet this post and i did a new one in the right area,
to the last question no the calkulins did this
e: symlink /system/bin/lsmod
e: failure at line 10: aymlink toolbox system:bin/lsmod

i was told i may have bad blocks and to get a new phone!! how can this be determined and how do i get it replaced??

Need HELP to ROOT HTC EVO.. Used Unrevoked 3 and STUCK on Clockwork

Alright first off.. I might NOT be stuck, I am just unsure because I am a noob at this! I want to be certain not to brick my phone or screw it up on this screen, so here is what I did step by step so far...
-Installed Hboot drivers successfully (android 1.0)
-Downloaded and installed unrevoked 3 recovery reflash tool v3.22
-Carefully proceeded with the steps from: [GUIDE] One Click How to Root EVO with Unrevoked 3.21 *NEW EVO'S WONT WORK 11.16.10* http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=787304
-I had my phone mounted as "Disk Drive" instead of "charge only" and didnt realize this untill I got to the clockworkmod recovery v2.5.0.1 screen. Unrevoked 3 went through the process from what I think is somewhat completed.. unrevoked went to a somewhat grey screen on my pc and displays:
Done.
Recovery image: clockworkmod recovery
-My HTC EVO phone came to a stop at ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.1 and has a menu with some options like reboot, apply sdcard:update.zip, wipe, install zip from SDcard, nandroid, partitions menu, advanced, and a ++go back++
-The step above is where my problem is.. When i got to that screen it read my SDcard and mounted it, then said installing DATA:local/unrevoked-forever.zip, then said found, opened, and displayed installing update...
-After that it displayed:
unrEVOked forever S-OFF patch v1.1
verifying system type...
E:unsupported radio version
E:update failed. Check /SDcard/soff.log.
E:error in /data/local/unrevoked-forever.zip (status 42)
Installation aborted.
/tmp/recovery.log was copied to /sdcard/clockworkmod/recovery.log. Please open ROM Manager to report the issue.
-STUCK, because I don't know what to do next, I thought it was a "1-click rooting process" ha.. I havnt touched anything on my pc or EVO since it came to this screen so can someone help me get past it..?
I just need some help on where to go from this menu. I am trying to root my phone. However it has a BAD ESN(which is why i am using this phone for learning how to flash, root, unlock, etc..) So idk if theres something special I need to do because it has a bad esn or if im just being too damn cautious, but like i said... Im a noob and dont want to brick my phone or waste time.

This usually means that you need to update the radio before you can use unrevoked-forever. Since it is possible to install the new radio using a zip you could just copy it to the sdcard and flash it, then after it completes you should try unrevoked again, it should work at that point.
So what option do I choose on the clockwork screen? its not going to mess the phone up since im backing out is it? also what files do you reccomend I put on my SDcard? the phone had a good ESN up to 12/10.
I just ended up clicking nandroid backup then clicked reboot and now I have supersuser permissions.. Im guessing I completed the root?
getting past E:unsupported radio version

I had this same issue when using simply the unrevoked 3.22 application. My radio is: 2.15.00.09.01
I needed to manually download the unrevoked-forever.zip, place it on my sdcard, and flash it using recovery. When you get to this point in the process, you should have an active recovery (like clockwork), that you can use for this.
What surprised me, was that I didn't even alter my radio. I had prepared to need to downgrade my radio, but it wasn't even necessary. Once I manually tried to flash unrevoked-forever.zip, it just worked.
You know it works if your bootloader shows (S-OFF)

1.28.401.9 OTA problem with unlock/root?

I'm unable to install the 1.28.401.9 OTA update and was wondering if anyone else has the same issue - or whether I'm missing something obvious.
My 1X is unlocked and rooted but still running stock.
On completion of the OTA download I select to install and it boots into CWM Recovery with "Installation Aborted" at the bottom and
"E: Unknown volume for path [PATH] E: Can't mount INTERNALSDCARDownload..." etc.
So I select 'Install from SD card'>'choose zip...'> then go to Downloads and select the update file and get:
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Installation aborted
So I disable signature verification, try again and get:
assert failed: check_cid(getprop("ro.cid")...
Then a string of 8 digit numbers and alphanumeric codes and finally
E: Error in /sdcard/Download...[PATH]
(Status 7)
Installation aborted
Anyone have any ideas why it's not working?
same problem......
Me too
Kevin & Orel - just to be sure, can you confirm that you are rooted and running stock as well please?
Yep unlocked and rooted, but running stock. Once in CWM Recovery I see the same errors as you.
yes before I was sfr version and my htc is root & recovery & stock htc .....
Reinstall stock recovery
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
tested stock recovery, but nothing happens ....
if I try to flash the uptade I receive an error message.
Appears when I have the stock recovery, I can not access the recovery to flash, I have a black page with a phone 3 green arrow and then a red box ...
And people told me I was silly to tell people NOT TO TRY AND RUN AN OTA ON A ROOTED PHONE!!!
Seriously, guys. Historically it's been nothing but problematic trying to apply an OTA to a rooted phone. If you want it THAT bad go custom

Did you relock?

You need stock recovery to apply OTA...
You dont flash it yourself from recovery!!!
The update program does that
i just flash .zip stock ...

+1 that
1. Download the OTA using the handset
2. Flash stock recovery (there's a download link in the CWM thread iirc)
3. Reboot
4. Go to Settings -> About -> Software Updates -> Check now
Assuming you already downloaded it, you'll be prompted to install it
5. Once the OTA update runs (it reboots twice) reboot into fastboot mode and reflash CWM
CWM can't flash the OTA and I personally didn't have to relock my device (It's not an RUU update)
Flash RUU DONT root and try again...
Once updated root again

[Q] Refuses to let me return to stock ROM

My Kindle Fire has bad hardware, so I need to return it. Currently has TWRP 2.5.0.0 installed, and had CM until I wiped it.
I downloaded the stock software and have been following this thread's instructions. However, whenever I try to install the stock ROM I get this:
Skipping MD5 check: no MD5 file found.
assert failed: getprop("ro.product.device") == "blaze" ||
E:unknown command [err_string]
getprop("ro.build.product") == "blaze"
E:unknown command [err_string]
E:Error executing updater binary in zip '/sdcard/update.zip'
Error flashing zip '/sdcard/update.zip'
Updating partition details...
In doing further research, it may mean I need to downgrade TWRP - some people have had trouble with versions newer than 2.3.3.0. And I just can't figure out how to do that successfully. I download the img file, follow these instructions, but when I put in "su" it says
su: not found
I tried connecting the Kindle Updater but the drivers don't seem to recognize it when I've got a ROM installed and booted up (though USB storage works when enabled), and while it DOES seem to see it and proceed when I'm booted into TWRP recovery, it doesn't actually do anything and just sits on updating partition information or something.
I'm VERY f'n frustrated. Could someone please do me a favor and hold my hand through this? I just can't get the damn thing to revert to stock.

Well if you can still access USB storage in TWRP, you can download a .zip file for the TWRP version you want and flash it in recovery. Ichigo has made a number of TWRP versions into .zip files for easy flashing.

OK, downloaded a zip for a 2.3.3.0 build... booted into TWRP, then ran Install with the ZIP. I get:
E:Error executing updater binary in zip '/sdcard/twrp-2.3.3.0.test5.p500.zip'
Error flashing zip '/sdcard/twrp-2.3.3.0.test5.p500.zip'
Any ideas? Am I doing something wrong?
What exactely do you mean by "bad hardware"? It's also possible that your downloaded update.zip file has been corrupted somehow.

It shuts the screen off and won't come back on until a forced reboot while plugged in is performed. It's an issue multiple owners report; Amazon typically replaces them for new owners (which I'm not)

I rooted it pretty soon after getting it, but yeah I think I did notice that happened once.
I had the same issue and re installed COTR and it worked

Trying to Update S3 : Signature Verification Failed

My girlfriend recently acquired a used SGH-T99, running 4.0.4, stock everything, not rooted.
Every time I try to update the phone (using the settings, about device, etc. method), it downloads the package fine but when trying to install it I receive this message:
CWM-based Recovery v5.5.0.4
E: Invalid command argument
Finding update package. . .
Opening update package . . .
Verifying update package. . .
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
I was going to attempt to update the phone using Kies, but the phone will not connect to my PC, or her MAC. I've tried multiple cables that I know work, but the phone doesn't even react like its plugged into something.
I'm unsure what my next step should be, any ideas?
If it has CWM, the OTA isn't going to work. You will need to try another rout. MobileOdin may be an option if you don't want root. I'm not sure if that updates the recovery though. Do a search and you should be able to find the thread.
Download Odin on your PC and check if it detects it, if so you can download the new firmware and flash it in Odin
You have to be 100% stock for the Ota to work. I do not recommend updating with mobile Odin though. Highly recommend flashing full firmware via Odin as suggested above.

Same Problem on my SGH T999
Facing the same problem for my SGH T999; couldn't upgrade myself to the custom ROM, Despite I rooted the device.
Earlier I got
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Where as the 1st error message is no more observed; after I removed the Assert line in "updater-script" file of META-INF folders of new ROM.
But continue to get the same 2nd message.
When I go to recovery mode of TWRP recovery; my device is not getting deducted ID: COM field, eventually end up getting the message as processed the file (0 Successed/0 Failed).
So I have to live with the Old 4.3 version; where majority of the Apps these days not supporting this version of android.
