Why the G2 over the MT4G? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

There is a thread that is the opposite of this in the MT4G forums and since I am trying to decide between the two, I'd like to hear you guys point of view as well. What about the G2 is it that you like better than the My Touch 4G? Would you ever trade?

Well the G2 doesnt look like crap for one >.>

Most importantly, G2 is stock android, and will theoretically get updates faster.
Also, the G2 has a physical keyboard, which I still like having.
And lastly, the G2 has a normal search button on the front instead of the "Genius" button. This makes a difference because the genius button is voice search ONLY, meaning it can't be used to bring up the on-screen keyboard. Meanwhile, the search button on the G2 can be short-pressed to bring up the on-screen keyboard and type a search, or long-pressed to do a voice search. Having the option to do either one with the same button can make a huge difference in day to day use.

Got the G2 first but ended up trading it for the black mytouch after 3 weeks. No remorse at all. Coming from the Nexus, the G2 just was too bulky for my liking. Don't need the keyboard and with root, sense is not an issue any more. Add to that the extra ram and ffc and the decision became rather easy. Having said that, I can understand why people like the G2. Its a great phone, you can't go wrong with it.

metal vs plastic. i think engadget hit most of the points. i personally love the look of the G2, and for anyone coming from a nexus should be choosing the G2 for its appearence alone over the mytouch. the mytouch is bulkier and plastic feeling. its good for my girl tho. and she loves

I must admit, I am leaning toward the MT4G. I want to want the G2 because it looks sooooo much better. However, I think Sense truly improves the android experience from all the videos I have watched. The more I look into it, the more I think I wanted it. Coming from the Droid, I originally thought the G2 would be a no brainer, but I am thinking it will be the MT4G.

Just get the desire z rom flashed to your g2 if you want to keep the g2. The mt4g ui is not as good looking imo.

Dude, if its just sense you're after but otherwise like G2 better go with the G2. Now that we have root it won't take too long until you'll be able to flash almost any rom on either device. If you pick the MT4G you should pick it for the ffc, absense of keyboard and/or smaller size, not for its rom.
I'd suggest playing with both for a while (as in several days) and see what feels better. I got 30 days buyers remorse because I bought the phone full price at a T-Mobile store (not online) which gave me plenty time to play with the G2 and (after switching it) with the MT4G. Still have 3 days left to return the MT4G but ended up liking it so much that I won't have to.
Seriously, with root all you're looking at is hardware at this point. Won't take long for MT4G to get cyanogen and for G2 to get optimized sense roms.
By the way, when you hold both phones next to each other you'll see that they are mainly made from the same materials except for the soft keys on the G2 vs the physical keys on the MT4G. Both have metal battery covers and use hard rubber on the side (except that the G2 rubber is grey and gives it a more business like appeal). So regarding "build quality" I would say the hinge will be the larger factor to consider.

easy.
My sense UI looks like ****.(noobs) Genius button is just plain stupid. looks more like an updated moto cliq. stick with what ever you have right now. droid or nexus. definitely not worth the jump. Especially if youre an N1 owner.

DesireZ Sense rom (from dev subforum, don't try to flash the RUU >_>). Everything works exactly the way it should, seeing as it's basically the exact same phone (save minor nuances, nothing to discuss.) Get the G2, you will absolutely not regret it.

Most importantly for me, the G2 has a physical keyboard. I refuse to have a touch only device, I have to have my physical keys.

All MT's are sheet. Quickly forgotten devices, its tmo's answer to the iPhone but they'll quickly realize that they can talk sense into the typical iphone user..so the line will quickly fall apart.
The G2 on the other hand is the new standard in Android devices for Tmo users (after the Nxs) and it has full querty keyboard, perm. Root and Hspa... and a great community / following

doesn't mytouch 4g have 1ghz as oppose to 800 for g2? plus considering all of them are perm rooted, as long as desire hd have a decent dev support, I would think similar support will go for 4g?

I think the MT4G is close enough to the Desire HD in specs that porting stuff should be easy between devices

I've been asking myself if I should return my mytouch for the g2, mainly because of the g2 having stock android, but I like everything else better about the mytouch. With perm root out and cm on the way do you guys think this matters that much anymore?

Actually I believe the 800mhz cpu and 1ghz cpu are basically the same chip. I think they just ramped up the clock speed on the MyTouch thats all.

I think I personally will go with the mytouch. I have the original droid and it's keyboard is so terrible that I only use the software one now anyway, so not having a keyboard at all won't be a huge difference. The FFC is cool and I think i would get more use out of it than the keyboard (if I use the FFC once a month that would be more than I use a physical keyboard now lol).
Looks of the phone and support from developers for roms makes me want the G2, but everything else has me leaning mytouch.

I just returned my G2 and swapped it for the MT4G. The screen failed on my G2. I also have 30 days to decide but I am really leaning towards keeping this MT4G.
I really didn't like the hinge defect on the g2. The reps at TMobile weren't even aware of it and I would have stuck with the G2 had it not been for this. The Rep I was dealing with literally opened up 4 different brand new G2 boxes in front of my and the hinges were crappy on all of them. She actually told me that bc of this she is no longer going to push the G2 to anyone that comes in the store.

For me, it came down to needing a keyboard. No other reason.

Sounds like a good choice. If you want a physical keyboard the G2 is a must but if you're never going to use it there's really no reason not to pick the MT4G. Aesthetics wise I find the black one actually quite slick looking.
I wouldn't worry about a lack of dev support for the MT4G. First of all the phone has only been out for a week! Despite that we still had a rooting method for the MT4G the same day G2 root came out. ClockworkMod Recovery was ported to the MT4G just 8 hours after it was available for the G2. Since the phones are so similar you'll probably see most stuff for the G2 ported to the MT4G and vice versa within no time.
One more thing to consider is that video chat will probably be an integral feature of gingerbread. Kinda makes me wonder how the G2 will fit into the android 3.0 aera... Oh, and then there's the potential hinge problem. I guess only time will tell how that's going to play out

G2 or HD2?

Ok, so I've been talking to TONS of people about which phone I should upgrade to. My HD2 friends are vouching for the HD2, but the G2 people say that the HD2's battery life is **** (this was pre-Nand). Which of the 2 phones do you think I should look into upgrading to?
I'm hoping to have a phone that has a big developer base so the phone is always supported (unlike the Mytouch Slide, which was supported for 2 months until the G2 came out.)
Sent from a phone that's better than yo Momma's. bbq.
well you're posting in the G2 forum so I bet most people are gonna say G2 (hopefully)
and cyanogen owns a G2 himself, so the phone should be heavily supported for a good while...
I personally went with the G2 and am lovin it
I have both.
Why do I have both? Because the G2 really attracted me as it reminded me of my old TP2.
Would I buy it again? No.
The keyboard is stiff.
The screen is small.
The CPU is unimpressive.
I get less battery life with it, than my HD2 with Android.
The hinge is just stupid.
The flash is weak.
The camera seems lower quality in side by side comparisons.
Go with the HD2.

Ok, see, this is helpful. The HD2 has 720p right? Isn't that better than the G2's camera already? Also, do you think that the HD2 will be as supported as it is now in 10 months?

Actually, I haven't updated my Froyo build in awhile, so I don't know if the 720p is working yet or not for video recording. I do know the sound is a bit better on the video with the HD2, but I never compared the video quality between the two.
When I mentioned the camera, I meant still shots. I've been able to do some HDR shots even with the HD2.
Another thing, I am getting about 5-7mw of drain on an SD card build, and I hear the NAND builds are down to 2-3mw of drain. With my normal battery, a day of medium to heavy use isn't a problem. However, I also have the HTC extended battery and go about 2 days without a charge with no issue
I don't know if they will make an extended battery for the G2, but the way the battery door is made, it would be hard to do.
That's another thing, I don't like the MicroSD being in a weird little "cage" under the battery. So much for swapping in cards while the phone is on.
One thing I forgot...
The screen size on the HD2 will completely spoil you to the point that no smaller screen will ever "do" for you. Be it just reading on the screen, or typing on it with two thumbs in landscape. It's just perfect.

The color is nothing like an AMOLED screen, but it is brighter and crisper than most other LCD's out there.
It's the same screen the EVO and the Desire HD have, and both of those get pretty high praise
It certainly is higher brightness and color than the one they put on it's retarded twin brother the HD7
Glad I could be of some help. The G2 certainly does get higher bandwidth speeds in the "4G" areas, but I've never felt the HD2 was "slow" on the network either.
Plus another annoyance? The trackpad on the G2 randomly "wakes up" and moves when I'm typing. I'd rather that space was used for screen.

The only things that really attracted me to the G2 were the hardware keyboard and the 4G network. But I live like an hour away from Los Angeles, so I doubt that I'll be getting any 4G coverage anytime soon. I'm guessing by 2012.
Also, I've been hearing some wonky things about the trackpad on the G2, apparently there's a proximity sensor inside that responds to shadows and movement.

The keyboard isn't worth it.
I came from the Motorola Q9h, to the Tilt, to the Touch Pro, to the Touch Pro 2... So I was a diehard keyboard man... Then I owned the HD2 since release day.
Now after owning the G2 for a few months? I honestly can say, that as long as I have my HD2, I won't be wanting a physical keyboard.
The 4G honestly is the only reason I could see getting the phone, so since that isn't an issue for you, head on over to the HD2 section and find whatever ROM suits your fancy the most

I went from a ****ty Nokia flip phone to a BB to another BB to the Mytouch3G to the MTSlide. I regretted ever going over to the MyTouch3G because the soft keyboard was laggy as hell (even when I used Swype). I guess that I'm just overly cautious about having yet another laggy phone.
Also, I've been lurking in the HD2 dev forum for a while now. I've just been to afraid to post anything. Lol.

If you like the HD2, then surely the Desire HD is the more obvious upgrade option ? Big screen like the HD2, and a much faster processor than the HD2 (newer generation, don't just compare the clock speeds !).
Personally I love the Vision's hardware keyboard, because I don't lose a big chunk of my screen to an on-screen keyboard. But we all like different things, and it would be a very boring world if every single one of us liked the same phone best !

Much faster? It's not even a full revision different than the original Snapdragon. I haven't seen that it is "much" faster in anything. A bit faster? Yep.
Worth the doubling in price to get? Hardly.
Not to mention, it sounds like the OP is using the T-Mobile network, the DHD won't have 3G on that.

Yes, but the second gen snapdragons eat the competition. It'd be safe to say the G2 is one of the best options if your into the hardware
I just put my HD2 aside for a G2. Suffice to say the HD2 is getting alot of shelf time now The ironic thing is I got tired of waiting for NAND-flashable Android builds for the HD2 and running it off a slow SD card and so the day after I paid full retail for my G2 - I see Cotulla and crew have released MAGLDR(sp?). ROFL
I flashed an MDJ Gingerbread NAND build, ran it on the HD2 for about an hour, then pulled the SIM and put it back in my G2. It's hard to explain, the HD2 is phenomenal but the G2 is an actual Android device so it just feels more comfortable to me running Android builds

This is the exact reason I switched from my HD2 to a G2. As well as being able to have a physical keyboard that did not take up half of the screen.
I am not a huge fan of Windows mobile and although there are different builds and roms for the HD2, none of them made me happy. I love Android and having an actual keyboard, so the best option for me was the G2.
Plus my HD2 lagged a lot.
Had an HD2 before the G2, dont regret ever selling it, I am happier with the G2 then I ever was with the HD2.

Are you currently using T-Mobile with your HD2? I have a HD2 and a G2, my dad is using the HD2 and loves it since its a big screen and all. The only problem he says he's having is that the reception is worse since I put Android on it. Do you have any similar problem? Or did I do something wrong when I put Android up on it?

Where to upgrade after the Touch Pro 2?

I've been using the HTC Touch Pro 2 since last April with T-Mobile. I've absolutely loved the functionality, including ability to customize the ROM(<3 Energy), simple to use web browsing, texting, email, wifi router, bluetooth ability, and many other features that come with the smart phones. I'd die right now during school/work/personal stuff without the calendar.
When I bought it last year, the HD2 was sitting next to it, and the reason I went with the HD2 was the hardware keyboard. Software keyboards annoy the heck out of me unless they're well done. I could type 5 times faster on my TP2 than an ipod touch. But, what is getting to me now after using the TP2 for 10 months?
- Camera: Quality isn't high enough compared to other shots I've seen taken by phones. I switch the lighting settings to tweak it, but it's still grainy. I as in a dark club the other night, and watched someone take pictures that were noticeably clearer than mine.
- Lack of 3.5mm Headset Adapter. I have to use the HTC USB -> 3.5mm adapter to listen with earbuds to music. Annoying.
Like I said, the hardware keyboard is almost necessity, but I could learn to deal with a software if it's not the kind that can be easily fat fingered.
That's all I can think of right now. Any help with the phone upgrade process would be greatly appreciated.
i think your first decision is probably are you going to stay with windows phone 7, android, iOS, or webOS.
Almost all of these software has some nice phones with physical keyboard. 3.5mm headphone jack (it's pretty much standard now with most high-end phones). If you want a good camera, go with the phone with led flash support then you probabaly will be fine.

I liked the TP2 after I got it because it was an operating environment I was used to and familiar with. I haven't used any other one, so I can't comment on it. What are examples of phones with hardware keyboards that have the same, if not better functionality than the TP2, including the things I listed of any OS? The HD2 and HD7 look enticing, but if there's something similar that might suit my needs better, I'm just looking for suggestions.

If the keyboard is what you care about, then perhaps you should simply wait for the HTC 7 Pro to be available. It is basically the Touch Pro2 on steroids. It is the successor to the TP2 and runs WP7. There's a thread with a bunch of useful information HERE.
I'm in same boat as you, trying to figure which phone next. Still cannot decide and will give it another year, mainly because 3G networks are in a state of flux where I live (now still using EDGE). I will likely either go to Android if I can get the sync with MS Office to my liking or WM7 if the apps take off. No interest in other phones.
As for headphones on TP2, I have a nice bluetooth set by Jabra that does away with need for jack.
I was in the same boat as you a couple months ago when my contract ended with my provider. I had been looking at WP7 since the first whiff of it came out, but the more I read about it the more I disliked it. Long story short I greatly dislike all of these current operating systems for varying reasons.
So eventually I decided that the TP2 was as good as it was going to get for me for now, and bought up a couple extra of them. They're relatively cheap, and they all should last me until I cannot physically use them anymore (carrier doesnt support for some reason, or I can't find any good batteries, etc..) or until some company makes something desirable for me.
My advice is that you research at length all of your options before you end up with something you don't like using. It took me a lot of time playing around with android and WP7 before I decided I didn't want any of them. The TP2 is an excellent device and Windows Mobile is an excellent OS, don't let anyone fool you into thinking otherwise.
As far as your complaints, 3.2 MP is enough for me and my carrier's TP2 includes a headphone jack.. So I guess we're not in the same boat in those regards...
maybe an evo shift 4g?

I'm in a similar boat... I love the TP2 for it's design, had a Tilt before so this was a great upgrade. But there's nothing that's coming out from HTC that I've seen or heard of that looks like an upgrade. The 7 Pro is kind of an upgrade, but not the same kind of amazing upgrade like the Tilt to Tilt 2... I would like a slightly larger/better display but also keep the physical kb... I've been lookin at the Atrix (even tho they say you can't put custom roms on it yet), just cuz it sounds pretty sick but I keep hoping a phone w/ a kb comes out. Looks like Dell is gonna bring something out but not til the end of this year I think... I really hope HTC brings out a Tilt 3 w/ a 4-4.3in screen, better camera, runnin android since I don't really like WP7 & a dual processor...lol

The Atrix concept looks very cool, but I've been pretty underwhelmed by the recent Motorola handsets. They just feel cheap and clunky compared to HTC phones. But maybe they can step it up a notch. Similarly, the Dell Streak seemed like nothing special that just about every other manufacturer couldn't match or do better. And there were some things, like the proprietary dock connector, that were outright inexcusable. Again, they are going to need to kick it up a notch to get me remotely interested in their products.
I agree that a slightly larger screen (maybe around 3.9 or 4.0 in) would be really nice for watching video, and make the on-screen keyboard easier to use (for the times you don't feel the need to flip out the hardward keyboard). But I think a 4.3 in display with a hardware keyboard would result in a really big, thick, heavy phone.
But I have to say, the Desire Z is a pretty sick upgrade over the Tilt2. Maybe not in terms of form factor, but in terms of just about everything else.
I have no upgrades available for a long time so I'd be buying retail. The 7 pro looks quite interesting. Maybe I'll stop buy the T-Mobile store and see how the desire z feels. Is there much of a change over the TP2 to go to a Desire Z?
I've somewhat fixed the no 3.5mm jack issue by buying a bluetooth headset that supports a2dp. I guess that'll hold me over until later this year if I upgrade.

The keyboard on the Desire Z is smaller than the Touch Pro2, but most people who own it say that it still feels very nice. I would miss my dedicated number row, though. I've gotten very used to it.
i have loved my touch pro 2 for the past year or so and all the devs, everyone at XDA made me love it even more. my girlfriend has an iphone and ill never ever trade my phone for iOS and theres not any other phone carried by ATT that is any better than the touch pro 2 i think..but then the Atrix came along. its a sad realization but you cant compare the specs of our touch pros to any of these new devices. sure im sacrificing the full qwerty kb we all know and love and moving on from winmo 6.5 (that ive grown with since 5.x) but i feel like its for the better. especially with all the wear and tear ive put my phone thru, sure is one hell of a trooper thats for sure, its time to set it down and ive made my decision. expecting my atrix to arrive this coming monday. so with this goodluck to all with whatever you decide!
Phone after TP2
I'm also investigating new phones (although doing so would also require me to give up my sero plan, which seems unlikely at the moment).
For me on Sprint, there seems to be a few major choices that include a physical keyboard that I was looking at:
Android:
-HTC EVO Shift
-Samsung Epic 4G
WP7:
-[upcoming] HTC 7 Pro
The EVO shift has a similar sized screen to the TP2, while the Epic 4G goes a bit larger (4") and has a faster processor (1 Ghz vs. 800 Mhz on the Evo Shift). Nonetheless, I'm still pretty turned off by the touchwiz UI on the Epic 4g -- a bit to cartoony for my tastes.
Since the 7 pro is essentially the successor to the TP2, the dimensions are pretty similar albeit with an upgraded processor (1 Ghz).
I'm currently running XDAndroid on the TP2, so I have a sense of how android works, but I've never tried WP7 -- after classic WinMo I'm still kind of hesitant to go back to Microsoft.
To anyone who has been using WP7 -- any thoughts on the disadvantages/advantages over android?
I guess the most obvious phone would be the HTC 7 pro closely followed by the Desire Z.
Personally i decided to keep my TP2 after 2 years (i can pick a new phone @ my provider in june). The phone does everything i want.
The only program i miss on Windows Mobile is WhatsApp/pingchat

I get the Desire Z. I went to T-Mobile hoping to find one to even hold and play with, but didn't see one. I'm just really hung up on the hardware keyboard when considering an HD7. The hardware keyboard makes me want to pump out paragraphs of forum posts on the phone. The software keyboard makes me hate texting.
Same thougths here, and same conclusions, just like some people wrote: I tried some phones, but the only possible choice would be the Desire Z (7 Pro w/o card slot is a NO GO!). I ended up buying an new display to replace the cracked one in my TP2 (via ebay, from HK), saving LOTS of money, and still having the device I like and am used to.
Someone wrote about TP2 being cheap(er) now, where do you get them and at which price? They're still above 50% of the price at introduction around here in Germany. If they were cheaper, I'd buy one as spare, too.

They go for cheap in the Marketplace forum here in XDA every now and then. There's also eBay. I've seen them as low as $120 recently.
That's an incredible price! They're still well over 250€ new on Ebay, almost 400€ in the cheapest onlineshop I found in Germany! WOW.
I will vote for HTC 7 pro, as you've been used to using a keyboard, it's hard to go back to the on-screen one, and BTW HTC 7 Pro is really amazing

[Q] Would you recommend the G2?

Hello,
I have been wanting to replace my bricked Galaxy S with one of the below smartphones:
- T-Mobile G2
- Nexus One
- HTC Leo/HD2
- Nexus S
The requirements for my selection include:
- The ability to function under the AWS 1700/2100 frequency
- The ability to utilize MicroSD storage (Nexus S fails in this category)
- Have a reasonably good/congenial screen size and resolution
- Have a variety of custom ROMs and modifications
- The ability to use LED notifications
- Have a good build and be considerably capable, perdurable and dependable in terms of both hardware and software (unrelenting to software defects such as bricking, and hardware flaws).
I would be very grateful if you, the owners of the G2, would kindly reflect upon your overall experiences with your device and inform me of the phones pros and cons. I would also be thankfully open to any recommendations regarding my selection.
Thank you very much.
Okay bro i have both G2 and a Nexus S... I like both phones but in my own opinion i think the nexus S is kinda better. I love Pure stock android
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App
Pros:
Great keyboard
Can use the LED (only if rooted...unless there an app for that)
Cons:
The loose hinge
Screen wobbles due to the screen
The back cover can start peeling its silver metal finish
The matte finish all around the phone can change color over time. (fixable with a case/ i prefer a clear case to show off its sexiness while still being protected)
Using a case causes the matte finish to chip off very tiny pieces. -___-
I kinda want a mytouch4g. I'm not a keyboard user...
You should wait because Galaxy SII, hTc Pyramid, and other great devices are coming out. I suggest you wait a little longer
I don't find the necessity to buy a dual-core phone. I am buying these phones because of their great development also, something that the Galaxy S line lacks.
I personally love HTC Sense UI also, therefore leaning my decision towards buying HTC branded phones. I also want the phones to be reasonably priced (under 450 or so), unlike the new dual cores which may cost more than 600$.

The only reason I got a G2 is because it was free on tmobile.com last month..
Pros:
fast for 800mhz
Keyboard is great (3 quick keys come in handy)
@ and www./.com key is great
Decent size screen
Camera qual is good
4G network
Easily rooted and good custom roms
Hinge isn't as bad as people make it out to be
Froyo is cool for stock
Cons:
Preloaded google apps suck (root to remove)
Battery life (stock)
Network Card isn't that great for 4g service
4rows on keyboard rather than 5 (non dedicated numbers)
Micro-USB port isn't in the best spot
MicroSD slot under battery is annoying
Camera hardward button is a tad laggy
LED is only white (track pad)
Track pad isn't the greatest
Screen wobble is easily fixed by keeping the sides of ur index fingers placed on
the screen edges.
No sense but romable!
The hidden memory lmao
Id recommend moving away from tmobile altogether.
The evo shift is better than this on sprint. Or get a dual core phone
It looks like I have no other option but to go for the HD2. I want to use the phones on Mobilicity/Wind's AWS frequency here in Canada, with their cheap unlimited plans costing a maximum of 45$. Therefore, because the Nexus S has no Ext. SD slot and both Nexus' are equally expensive when bought without a contract, i will have to opt for either the HD2 or the G2; which in this case melodicjunkie's review of the G2 deprecates the device.
The fact that the HD2 is versatile and can run WP7 and Android (Sense, Cyanogen, Gingerbread, Honeycomb) makes it a more worthy selection. However there is some quality of the G2 which still attracts me to it.
I'd go for the Desire HD if it would run on AWS frequency, however I must sigh because it does not.
The G2 is a newer phone than the HD2, so it runs a lot better, especially since it runs Android natively, which the HD2 just really can't compete in terms of actual performance. I have both phones right now, so I speak from experience.
HD2 Pros:
Screen size is sexy, but can be too big for some people at 4.3"
Can run WinMo, WP7, Android, Meego, Ubuntu. Lots of variety.
Lots of development going on, but only a handful for each OS are quality in my opinion.
Cons:
No trackpad/trackball
Older processor
Android is not as smooth as on the G2
No hardware camera button
Boot times are ridiculously long compared to the G2
G2 Pros:
Nearly stock Android 2.2
Newer processor runs faster at 800Mhz than HD2 at 1Ghz
Rooted, the phone can be OC'd ridiculous amounts
Clockspeed for clockspeed, G2 always beats HD2 on all benchmarks
Physical keyboard is one the best I've ever used
Trackpad does its job
Camera button
Not as much dev work as the HD2, but it's growing and it is quality work
CM support. Nuff said.
Cons:
Cannot charge with the phone off. Always goes into recovery. It's annoying.
Trackpad gets a bit wonky under direct incandescent light
Google bloatware, though some of it I do actually use
Hinge is loose, but it doesn't bother me and the screen doesn't wiggle on mine
Not very many LED colors to choose from, even when rooted
Wish it were a 5 row keyboard like the G1
Battery life kinda sucks stock, but rooted, it is greatly improved
Wish the screen were 4", but it is okay where it is
Overall, I began using the G2 daily once I got it and rooted it with CM. Haven't looked back since. The G2 outperforms the HD2 on all aspects for me. It just seems to have a more premium feeling to it because of the extra metal accents on the front of the phone. It feels more solid and seems like it can take more abuse than the HD2 due to a smaller screen size.
Hope this helps
The HD2 is outdated and slow.. lol @tazz9690 = if the hd2 boot time is slower than that's sad because the G2 boot time (non rooted) is sloowww lol.
As for recovery charge, that's only when rooted but yes that is annoying.
The G2 is perfectly fine for 100dollars contract.. the highest id pay for this phone (contract or not) is
150 USD. Maybe 200 if I didn't already know how to root and it were rooted. For 0 dollars with contract it was literally a steal, but let's just say if the Evo shift was the same deal ida got that instantly.
Don't get the slow HD2.
If you want tmobile that bad get the mytouch 4 for the front cam.. no keyboard but so what?
Or you can wait for the sidekick 4g (sarcasm) although 1ghz sidekick! Lmao
I actually had the HD2. I currently have the G2 and the Nexus One.
I'd advise against the HD2. I'm currently running the Nexus One with Miui which will partition the sdcard on it own to allow more apps. The first time I used the Nexus One with CM7 I realized that not all my apps from the G2 were gonna fit the Nexus One. The N1 has a very low internal memory as appose to the G2. Again, Miui roms auto partition your sdcard to allow more apps to fix without the hassle of moving them over manually. You can manually partition the sdcard to allow more apps on CM7.
I really like the Nexus One (just bought it). I'm currently using the N1, and what I really like about it is that mostly all types of roms, sense, stock android, CM7, and Miui work flawless.
Keyboard on the G2 is awesome. You can't go wrong with a G2 or an N1.
I never used the N1. I wanted it when it came out but never got it. The N1 is very stable and sleek as for what I've seen and for what I've been told.
Id go with the G2 over the N1. The g2 had a baby and N1 was born.. or the N1 is the younger brother.. either direction you wanna go, get the G2 over the N1.
I'm still saying wait for a dualcore Tmobile..
The phone I really want is the Incredible S

Not a big fan of the keyboard layout of the shift, otherwise I would get it. Can't change that about the phone though.

Even though the N1 came before the G2, so it would literally be impossible for that outcome to be possible. It's more like, the N1 had a son and it turned out to be Chuck Norris. Major upgrade XD
Get a MyTouch4G. Fast processor, 768MB RAM, FFC, lots of development, easy to root. Looks better in real life and feels great in the hand. The black one has soft touch rubber around the sides while the others are just plastic so go for black. You wont regret it, definitely an underrated phone.
It is essentially the DesireHD with a smaller screen (3.8" but still the same resolution).
It meets all your criteria. I think you will be pleased.

I'm thinking this would be a great choice for you. I picked G2 over it because of the keyboard, but either phone is a great choice. MT4G has a little bit better specs though, since it has more ram and it's CPU is clocked 200mhz higher at stock (that's easily fixed if you root either phone). I'm more than happy with the G2; every phone has it's quirks, and that's why there are so many on the market. IMO this is the best phone on the market with a keyboard, although I haven't tried the Evo Shift yet (same internal hardware as G2/DZ though).
If my G1 were still functional, I'd be using it today even though I would've been due for an upgrade in October..

Of these choices the G2 is what I'd pick but as others have suggested I'd actually recommend the MyTouch 4G.
The G2 keyboard is not that good (compared to the G1 anyways) and thanks to Swype I rarely use it. Since the MT4G doesn't have a keyboard you have more case options.
MT4G is faster
MT4G has physical buttons for home, back & menu unlike the lame soft-keys found on the G2 and most other phones today.
Both have decent custom ROM support
I kindly thank all of you whom have posted and guided my decision-making towards buying the most worthy mobile smartphone out of my criteria.
Again, thank you

I had a premonition I was going to be asked this question. hah!
I am simply going to wait for the HTC Pyramid or for the Incredible S to decrease in price, then I will make me selection. It feels slightly awkward to purchase a N1 or an HD2 as it would feel somewhat like a downgrade from my previous powerhouse phone, the Galaxy S.
Although I must say that I find it extremely difficult and frustrating to wait for the later smartphone releases (Incredible S, Pyramid). Therefore I am truly lost as to whether I should buy an HTC phone compatible with AWS now, or whether I should wait for future dual-core HTCs.

Look, if you have a phone now: what's the rush? Who knows what kind of bugs these new phones will have. Id rather risk buying a release date kick ass phone, than to buy outdated hardware. Even the sidekick 4g is better than the hd2.. and the sidekick 4g is a freaking joke!
get the pyramid.. I'm getting it to replace the g2, that must tell u sumtin...
Cmon, 8mp cam, front facing one as well.. stocked 1.2 ghz (I do that rooted on g2), you can. only imagine the rooting capabilites on the pyramid.. 2.3ghz overclock?? Maybe, because of the dual core processor and ram..
And to top it off, a phone like that seems odd to have a physical keyboard, which looks sick! The sleak design is amazing, especially the back.

[Q] Is G2 still a solid phone? Thinking about it vs. Nexus S and MT4GS

Right now I'm on Verizon with the Droid 3. it's a okish handset but I've noticed T-Mobile's great prepaid plan options and would love to take advantage. Only issue is which phone should I get? I'm a college student, and the purpose of switching is largely to save money, so I was hoping to pay around the 200 dollar mark. I love having a hardware QWERTY device mainly because it allows me to devote the entire screen to content instead of having a keyboard pop up all the time, but also for the tactile key feel. As such, I've looked at the G2, the My Touch 4G slide, and the Nexus S. All 3 seem like great choices but I can't make up my mind.
The Nexus S is the most logical choice from a development and "longevity" standpoint, but I'd miss the keyboard. The MT4GS has a great keyboard and more RAM than the Nexus S and G2, but there seems to be a bit more action going on with the G2 overall.
So far, beyond my better judgement, I'm leaning toward the G2 hard. Think it'll remain a solid daily driver device for a while, or is it getting "up there" in terms of age, development slowdown, and relative performance? I'd plan on keeping the phone for about a year or so, maybe more.
Thanks, hopefully you'll help me straighten out my options!
cost - g2 will be less than the others, new or used
i use the g2 and my girlfriend uses the mt4gs, personally i like the g2 better, yes hers is a bit faster and yes the development is picking up there. but here the dev community is very solid and the only phone ive used with a better keyboard then the g2 is g1. a keyboard is a dealbreaker for me so nexus s, i dont even consider
but again between the other two the one thing i like about hers more is the camera but the one on the g2 is just fine. well ok we could use more ram but my phone never lags so its obviously still good enough!

That's exactly what I was looking for, I'm fine stepping down camera wise if it means a phone with more support than the D3 (which has some but it's never gotten a ICS/JB rom that I could use as a daily, they're plugging away at it and i totally respect the devs who work so hard) has, a qwerty keyboard, and t-mobile.
Thanks for replying! :good:
I just came over from a MT4GS (R.I.P) to the Galaxy Relay 4g and I would highly recommend the MT4GS, I can't say OVER the others as I've never had a G2 or Nexus S but the Slide zips along, especially if you get it rooted and running CM9 with all the fixes and new kernels they have going over there. The phone isn't officially supported by HTC or by T Mo anymore so there is that but let's be honest if you cared you probably wouldn't be asking here lol. All I can tell you is that you won't be disappointed with a Mytouch 4G Slide. That processor and that camera are niiiiiiice.

After taking a closer look at the MT4G Slide forums, I'm probably going to go with that. It's a more futureproof bet I suspect.
I don't have to much experience with the mt4gs but I've owned my g2 since its released and I love it. My wife owns the my4g not the slide and its the biggest piece I've ever seen, she hates it and it has a lot of issues, so I would recommend the g2

A subject I didn't see touched on is sd card support, Neither Nexus S or Nexus 4 have micro sd card support. My last 4 devices both Windows Mobile and Android have all been qwerty devices. If u store pictures/music/apps go with a device that supports sd, The G2 is the oldest of the bunch but I feel its the best build quality then others, A few people I've asked about MT4G had to go thru replacements/returns a number of times.
G2 is also the smallest and lightest in your hand of the 3 devices u mentioned.

I own a desire Z (G2) - if it's intended for some frequent web browsing, it can get a bit annoying - it's slow to load/parse modern web pages...
HW keyboard is superb, overall speed is ok with available ICS/JB roms, but you can feel everywhere that it's a dated device while using it daily.
Battery is around 2 days with modest usage and wifi + data on only when U need them. If you use it as most people do, I guess it could hold up to 1 day.
If I were to buy a phone now, I'd be looking for something more modern really.

Would you recommend the G2?

I'm thinking about picking up an unlocked G2 off of amazon since this one has a QWERTY keyboard and it's only around $150 bucks or so. Any current owners: How do you like this phone? How are the custom ROMs? Would you recommend this phone, or would you prefer a different decently priced unlocked, GSM, QWERTY keyboard android phone?
according to your sig youre main phone is a mt3g, the vision is far beyond that one in terms of speed, build quality, amount of custom roms, etc.
if a qwerty is what you need then your options are limited, you have the sidekick 4g, which has a nice keyboard and some power but never made it past froyo, you have the mt3gs, not much of a step beyond adding a keboard to the mt3g. the mt4gs which is actually quite nice in terms of speed roms and still one of the best cameras on any phone, the samsung relay 4g - fastest of the lot but the most money, some random cdma locked phones and well the vision... i have the sk4g, mt4gs, mt3gs, dream (like your sapphire) and the vision, probably the best choice i ever made in phones...

I *liked* the phone a lot. And the developers are amazing! This phone was abandoned with GB by HTC but JB builds are still being rolled out in a regular basis.
However... I cannot recommend this phone anymore. As much as I love it, it is a 2 and a half year old phone. It is slow and big and heavy. I love QWERTY phones a lot too, but these days they no longer make good QWERTY phones.
If your girlfriend wanted something different, I would recommend a red Lumia 920. It looks rather sexy imo.
