First Impressions (and questions) - AT&T Version

So this is my first foray into the Android world, coming from an iPhone 4 that I liked but have been bored with for quite some time.
First impressions are mostly positive. The phone is obviously built well and sits in the hand fine despite its large size. The screen is great - more than enough brightness, extremely crisp text and great colors. The thing is extremely fast - pretty much no lag that I can find, even when I turn on ECO mode. I just got it this afternoon and used it with the charge it had from the box, so I can't comment fully on battery life yet. But it seems to be power hungry so far, though that was doing a lot of initial syncing and keeping the screen on a good bit.
Camera, as several reviews said, is average at best.
If you have any questions about it, let me know and I'll give my findings. I do have a couple of issues, though:
1. The phone gets quite warm, even after the mystery update. And I'm talking about just surfing the net and downloading apps - no games or anything intensive at all. If you try to turn the display up past 80 or 90%, you get an alert saying "Unable to further brighten due to temperature increase. Try again later." While it's plenty bright at 50%, this is completely unacceptable. If they don't do something about that quickly, I'm probably returning it.
2. I can't find a way to disable LTE. I'm getting 25-30mbit down here in north Atlanta, but I won't need that a lot of the time. I'd prefer to put it on HSPA+ to save battery (and, presumably, keep the thing cool.)
3. Voice Dial stinks. It "gets" what I'm asking for through my Motorola Roadster 2 speakerphone about 20% of the time. This worked 90% of the time with my iPhone. Not sure if there's a better dialer, or if this will improve with Jelly Bean.
Any input appreciated. I'll probably root it tonight or tomorrow, so if anyone needs anything (safe) for bootloader purposes just let me know.

Thanks for doing this, i too have and iphone 4, can you please tell me compared to the 4, how loud and clear is the speaker compared to the iphone 4? Thanks!

Thanks for the update. I was planning on picking one up tomorrow, but there seems to be more overwhelming negatives than positives from those that got theirs early. I think Google may have really dropped the ball on anointing LG as their official hardware vendor for the Nexus 4. There seems to be widespread overheating issues with the Nexus 4 which shares the exact same hardware as the Optimus G, sans LTE of course. Cause for concern of the reliability of the internal components as well as the glass back having cracked in 2 review units is pretty disheartening, think I'm going to hold off for now.

1. OG has auto bright limit. Proportionately with temp, phone apply bright limit. It is not a hardware trouble.
If your phone is too hot, return it.
2. Try *147359# at dial. It may show popup menu.

So far no problems, one thing is annoying - notification LED is on the power button, can't really see it, also doesn't stay on, just blinks once, kinda dumb.

So I really am liking this phone. Its not perfect, but its incredibly fast, has a great screen, and has some good customization possibilities.
Going to try Eco mode tomorrow to see how it performs and compare battery life. Seen some reviews that say it nearly doubles battery life, which would make it quite good.
The code mentioned above gave me an error, so I'm still looking for a way to turn off 4G.
As for the heat, I got that message in the parking lot at after I got it and again when it was plugged in, but its cool now on the couch.

I've had no issues with the temp on mine as of now. But then again I set my brightness at 63%. My lite blinks more then once but it only blinks I think like every 30 seconds or so. I'm still watching that I could be wrong. Going to to a you tube review on this tomorrow. I will post it here and on the at&t optimus g forum as well. So far I'm loving this phone.

I just switched from iphone 4 to this too and I gotta say it feels ridiculous looking at how small the iphone 4 screen is now after getting used to this.
For me the biggest complaints are the camera. I really don't like the quality and the other is the width. I can't get used to holding it. This is probably just a personal problem but it's feels too wide for me.
Other than that it's a great phone. Very fast sans project butter.

Agreed. The camera is average.
Back on the heat thing. For whatever reason, I haven't had any more heat problems since the first couple of days. No issues.

Further overall impression after several days of use:
1. Battery life is so-so. Getting through a whole day is a 50/50 proposition, which is a significant drop from my old iPhone 4.
2. Camera, as mentioned, is mediocre.
3. Speed is still great.
4. Screen is still great.
5. Sound is pretty good, but not as good as iPhone 4. Signal from the headphone jack is a bit quieter than i4.
6. Internal speaker is kind of tinny and weak.
7. Voice calls over ear piece are plenty loud and sound good.
I really want to like this phone, but I'm coming up with some limitations. We'll see what happens with the development, which could help #1 and that's my biggest concern.

Being "very particular" is good in my book. Thanks to everyone on this thread. I hope to see a lot more join in.
On the heat issue, based on my experience with my DInc...
Charging really heats the battery, so doing anything will lead towards overheating.
Holding it in your hand (the more skin contact the worse) or laying it on it's back (worse on a soft surface) prevents heat from escaping.
Releasing heat (IMO) is best done screen down, propped up against something, so that the phone is barely touching any surface. (Alternatively, lay it screen up on a cold hard surface, and move it periodically... contradicting my previous point.)
I'm itching to upgrade, but I'm waiting to see what's what. The LGOG is the current point of reference for all other droids out there. So I'm really hoping to hear many good things (esp. root and unlocked bootloader). But I also really want to hear all of the nitpicking details, because I expect "perfection" from everything. [OT] Yes, I am disappointed a lot of the time. After all, I'm using Microsoft at work and home. [/OT]

For the LED thing, do any market apps work on this?

After a week
After owning this phone for about a week and using the Note 2, Galaxy s3, and the One X+ for a bit, I think this is the best phone out there as far as fluidity goes, and its not even on jelly bean. I wish I can rip off the camera on One X+ and glue it on the optimus G but oh well.
If you're holding out because its not perfect, you're right its not. But you'll be hard pressed to find a phone besting this in the 4.7" form factor for a while. Now if you want to go to a phablet, I would suggest you to try the Note 2 for a bit, but you have to make sure you don't wear skinny jeans, have big hands, are proud of yourself (people look at you when you hold it up to your head) or not scared of face cancer (it warms up your face like nothing when talking for a while). But it's a real great phone, I wish there was a Note 2 mini with the same specs.
Of course, there is the Nexus 4, which I got to play with once, for like 5 minutes, and that was awesome. Sadly, you know all about what it's missing, and personally, I thought that between Jelly Bean 4.2 and no microD or LTE, I would go sans Jelly Bean 4.2. I can live with Jelly bean 4.1.
I dropped my screen brightness about 5% each day till i got used to it and now my optimus G lasts longer and I have no problem looking at a < 40% screen brightness indoors. =/ It helps with the heat.. actually I don't feel much heat anymore either and I still dont use the eco mode. It would be nice if it could automatically use eco for less intensive things and then switch to full for games, but it seems to just stay at eco the whole time.
Hope this helps anyone being on the fence. Oh and I use atnt

I actually prefer my optimus g over my nexus. Better battery life. Plus I scores better on benchmarks.

Funny how that is even possible when internally it's identical?

They aren't identical. From an operation perspective they have different OS and different radio.
Seems like JB for phones isn't "fully baked" (or at least not for these LG devices). Anandtech got better performance out of the N4, when they chilled it in the freezer 1st.

True,what I really meant was same processor/ram, however much more to the phone. I want a phone today, however the N4 looks better in some ways the LGOG in more. If I wasn't sick i would be at AT&T or Best buy right now

Hey guys I'm in need of an upgrade and I think the HTC One is the answer!
I was wondering if you could please give me feedback on your experience so far.

Absolutely love the device.
The Zoe feature and camera UI is top notch. You can do some really neat things with photo editing that I haven't seen on other devices. Galleries and slideshows are very cool too. I love showing those off to people and they're always impressed.
The screen is absolutely gorgeous with great viewing angles.
The front facing speakers are as good as people hype them up. I feel like I'm listening to a mini Bose system when I use them.
The build quality/design is among the best in smartphones. Easily the sexiest device I've owned.
Battery life has been surprisingly tremendous for me. I only plug in at night and easily get through a day of pretty heavy usage. Typically have about 40 to 50% battery left by the end of the night. I do use the snapdragon battery app so maybe that helps a bit.
The storage space was a concern for me but I ordered a meenova and it should be on its way soon. The reviews I've read on those have been positive and I just received my 64gb microSD card which I'll use for my carefully curated music collection. That will free up the 32gb onboard for everything else.

The battery was my biggest concern prior to buying and I have been presently surprised at how good it's been. I agree with his assessment 100%.

32gb is not enough storage for a phone? I'm curious what everyone is storing. I'm probably using less that 10gb currently. For music, I'll download an album here and there, but usually use pandora or stream from my amazon cloud.
For the OP, no problems so far. Battery life has been good. I don't try to let it run down, charge when I'm able, and haven't died yet. Looking at a portable battery pack just in case.
Phone is very smooth and fast, no problems streaming videos or playing intense games like asphalt 8.

I'm a big time music aficionado and have a ton of music on my phone. I don't have unlimited data so streaming isn't really an option.

I have only had my for a few days but I get a full day of battery life without any issue. I am a fairly low to medium user, but on my droid3 I would have to plug in at the 10 hour mark.
Here is a screen shot of my first full day, medium use downloading apps and getting it all set up. Plus about a million speed tests.

I can vouch for battery life being great for such a beast of a device... My rezound with half the specs and extended battery pack has about the same life as my One with similar usage, but the one does it faster with a bigger screen.
And I think 32gb is adequate. I would love to have 64 or 128, but I never use more than 16 or so GB before I start cleaning storage out.
I love light and fast with a small footprint, so this phone rocks.

(EDIT) Since posting the below, including edits, I have come to the conclusion that my phone is indeed defective, and am having it replaced. I'll report back.
I love the phone, but there are three major problems that prevent me from recommending it, although I don't know what else to get.
1. The camera. It has problems with focus, and the interaction between focus and exposure settings. It's hard to get a sharp picture out of it at medium to long range, making it all but useless for landscape/distance shots. The default settings let in too much light outside in daylight, resulting in hazy shots; and the only way to get a blue sky or anything close to enough sharpness to even zoom in just a little is to over-darken the shot by notching down the exposure and contrast controls. Indoors, there's flaring of brighter areas, and oversensitivity to the purple spectrum, as well as near impossibility of getting sharp shots at any distance. The auto exposure control changes the exposure so jerkily it's devilish to control. The wide angle and aspects of the big pixels show a lot of promise (and I'll bet the iPhone 5s with its 8 "ultra pixels" will provide proof of concept), but the way it is, the camera sucks. HTC says they're aware of this and working on an update. Uh huh. How long has this phone been out now internationally?
2. The speakers. A major selling point of the phone, and rightly so, as they really do sound great - especially with Beats on, or you can get more volume with it off, if volume is a priority. But the speakers are out of balance, with the bottom (right) one louder than the left, and there's some phase weirdness. For those of us who notice these things - this phone's natural constituency - it's really annoying. HTC says they "haven't heard much about this", but are looking into it. Meanwhile, I went into a corporate Verizon store and every employee in there with any experience of the phone said, "Oh yeah, everybody knows about that," and proceeded to give me the most imbecilic, trumped up explanations you could ever imagine. The kicker was, "They have to make the top speaker softer because they use it as an earpiece for the phone function."
3. BLUETOOTH. Unfreakingbelievable. If it hasn't been connected since the phone was last turned off, it will connect to your car radio automatically, as long as Bluetooth on the phone is turned on BEFORE the car. (EDIT - Turns out this isn't always the case, and may depend on the particular car radio.) But once the connection is broken, it will not re-connect automatically. When you try to connect manually, it may or may not connect properly, or may need repeated tries, or connect media but not phone function, or it may show it has done both but actually hasn't. But regardless, although the phone's music player will play, internet radio type apps will not play over Bluetooth - and the call quality will be greatly degraded. The only fix is to turn the phone completely off and on again - with Fast Boot OFF; a soft restart will NOT fix it - whereupon everything works fine. (EDIT - The foregoing fix also does not always work. With my car (2012 Subaru Impreza Ltd.), once the connection is successfully made, Bluetooth can be turned off and on again on the phone, and it will connect without a problem. It is when the car has been turned off that reconnection becomes a problem. My iPhone 4 worked flawlessly with this car.)
I really don't think my particular phone is faulty, in all these ways, especially since it doesn't have any of the other problems people have been reporting, and works perfectly otherwise. But please, somebody, convince me that it is, and I'll go get another one! Any case, there's loads of people having these problems.
(EDIT - further investigation with a couple of actually honest and knowledgable Verizon people has reinforced my conclusions, including the "loads of people having these problems" part, objected to by the commenter below. The camera is decidedly sub-par, the speakers are not in balance, and the Bluetooth, apparently typically of HTC, is badly done. These sources also reinforce those on this board who indicate that rooting can solve or improve these issues.)

Using the words loads isnt really accurate... The vocal majority are almost always having issues. Also realize that such a small percentage of the user base go to xda. Personally I don't see many of the issues you are having. If you look for cows youll see cows...

I've got the phone since Friday now (3rd day) and it's a great phone.
+ Recharge, overall quality, screen, feel in the hand, amazing speakers.
- Fast drain on batery, yellow tint on the bottom of the screen (as many others)

Speakers are loud and crisp
Fast charge is an added bonus.
Camera shutter is instant.
No yellow tint
Buggy OS:
-Sometimes ColorOS reverts my changed settings.
-Phone mutes all notification sounds after a restart.
Dead pixel on far right, the dead pixel is so darn small it's not even noticeable unless you thoroughly search for a dead pixel.

No i have not. It's not much, but it is there...

I got mine on Friday ( 2nd). So far I really like the phone. Same as others have said....
Pros:
Fast charging times
speakers sound quality are really quite good ( this was a bonus for me)
very responsive
lots of theme options
feels like a large Nexus 5 to me.
Cons:
Color OS takes some getting used to
viewing angles are a little washed out ( not as good as my M8 or note 3)
idle time on battery needs some tweaking
Overall I am glad I purchased the 7a.

The os is pretty much in an early alpha state and requires a few more updates to actually be fully usable.
Some features suck battery like it's cotton candy, but the superb sound and awesome screen make up for it.
If you wish to make it through a day on one charge then turn everything you don't need off and change the lock screen because the normal lock screen is glitched and drains your battery on standby.
Overall it's a great device with a not so great operating system.
But people like entropy are already working on the first custom ROMs so that should be handled soon.

Received mine last Monday, started playing with it Tuesday, got a sim for it Wednesday.
I'll preface this by stating I'm coming from a 3 year old HTC Inspire 4g so if somethings seem "wrong" well it's light years difference between the Inspire and this Oppo Find 7a
My first suggestion would be to put the 2.0 beta on it, been running it since yesterday and so far I think it "feels" more stable than the 1.2.x that comes with the phone. Most importantly I haven't had a single SD issue since updating to 2.0b.
Sound/speakers are amazing. Granted I'm no audiophile but considering my other 2 devices, HTC Inspire 4g and HP Touchpad, this sounds night and day better than both.
Speed is blazing, again though I am coming from a 3 year old phone (single core).
Battery life is great for me even from the start. Even w/o comparing it to the abysmal life of my previous device I'd still consider this good.
No yellow tint for me so can't comment on that

Downside is no custom rom yet and as I'm used to CM the features and nomenclature are different and a bit annoying having to think about doing something where as I'm used to being able to just do it.
An annoying thing is the flip case that came with the preorder turns the screen on/off which seems like a great idea, it's just implemented wrong. When I put my phone in the cubby hole in my truck the screen turning on and off is distracting. I've read others are discovering it's turning on and off in their pockets too.
No LTE for me until I "backdoor" it since AT&T doesn't recognize this device. I registered it and got a new sim twice and my account still shows that I'm on my Inspire 4g. Granted I don't use a lot of data so not really a priority, but still would be nice to have it even if I don't use it all that much. Then again with the speed and battery life of this phone that might change.

I am on a rooted ColorOS 2.0 (International) Beta and I must admit I actually like it's clean look and feel. I will probably go for a custom kernel and rom in the long run though.
I do not like the white back, not much grip for me and I really hate the pleather case that came with it.
The batery drain is also a minor problem for me.
Overall it's still the best phone I owned and I recommend it (unless you have really tiny hands)

Is ColorOS 2.0 a big difference than what it came with? I am currently on V1.20i. Ive been holding off from rooting until I start seeing some real ROM action.

Screen seems to react a little quicker to touch. 2.0 seems a crisper and smoother rom. I really love the blurr effect. Voice wakeup und Live Weather 2.0 are also pretty nice.

LTE works great if you give them an IMEI from a 4G phone like a Nexus 5. Just call ATT and have them change your IMEI, presto... your LTE will work like a champ!

I had an 4g phone, but not a LTE phone. I gotta borrow a friend's phone one day and do that, eventually.

Solid build but buttons are little bit hard to press IMO.
Great screen. Very bright though. Camera is good.
Color OS features are nice but there is one bug with cellular network battery usage. I think it doesn't go into deep sleep because of it and drains battery on standby mode especially if you have screen off gesture on. If you turn this feature off, it's a lot better. I do not have yellow tint problem.
I wish we can swap back plates like One Plus. I like to use my phone without cover and the back plate is white.
The touch is very responsive. I have to change Touch & hold delay to medium to prevent accidental click while scrolling. Then again, I'm using a screen protector which comes with the phone and it might be the screen protector problem.
The speaker is loud. Really really loud. I am HTC M7 user and I think Find 7 speaker is better than M7.

best phone I ever had.
hardware: Impressive built quality, awsome gorilla glass with almost perfect touch (but I had to remove that **** of screen protector that killed touch sensitive), conversation quality is like havin ur friend talkin beside you and it get signal where other phones die.
software: I m using colorOS 1.2i, it has lacks of some feature, but it sports everything you really need and it does it fast and easy to use. It's like a stock android with kool features. Never had bug like force closing of apps....for me it's much better to use than a touchwiz and I feel like I m using a reactive nexus or a cooked rom.
camera: should I spend words? no...it's the best, there's no competion. it doesnt have any gimmick feature like htc zoe..but it's so easy and fast to find the settings u need, just shoot! and pics are nearly professional.
loudspeaker: it's in gods arena, beside z2 and htc one. if htc m8 is the king in this way, find7a is a prince, and u ll be happy of having.
Battery drain: kernel and governor need to be fixed. I had a good 6% of drain when using it with lte and screen on, but I also had 5.5% in stand by mode. so....here it's how I fixed and now I get 1.5% in standby (tnx to Gsam and Wakelock apps):
-removed stock google news and wheater widget, it doesnt allow sleep mode and it drain 1.5% of battery per hour
-removed yahoo wheater app (removing just widget is unuseful)...saved other 1.5%
-WIFI advanced settings : everythin off but optimization wifi...saved another 1.5%
- I use pattern unlock mode, from ever, someone reported that using stock colorOS mode drains battery
I noticed that when switching off WIFI , 3g/4g connection is already on...never happened with other phones, they all took some seconds for 3g to be working, maybe this means connection drain battery as it never goes really off even when is under wifi? dunno..
something I didnt like , but doesnt matter:
-power button sucks, it s less than half millimeter, so it's very hard to push it. but I dont really care, I use double tap to lock and unlock it!
-back cover. it's good and has grip, nice color and wotever...but it's very very slim and flexible. due it's so slim, antenna works like a blackberry but I m afraid it will destroy itself easily, bcs it's already starting to be flexible at my touch.
-screen: awsome , color are very good, but a more calibrated temperature can improve it. it's not blueish like some reviewr says...but a better temperature could improve its gamma as well, that s very high (I used to calibrate televisions some years ago so I have a special look on screens). at a first look , find7a screen is like an LG g2 screen with a wrong calibration (but more realistic colors ).
-It arrived with a dead pixel , but it s impossible to notice it due it's a full-hd screen, so I really dont give a shot about it.
-yellow screen, there's a yellow ghost at the base of the screen for 2 millimeters...but believe me guyz, I v seen ppl going crazy on forums for this, It's something u can notice only on a completely white screen and if nobody tells u, your not going to see it! but if u love perfection, I can say that it went away after some days of usage...I m sure it's glue and it takes some days of warm screen to be fixed.
-optional case: tnx oppo to send me such a gift in real leather, but I trash it after 1h. software doesnt support this case, having it in my pocket means it opens itself and screen goes on, but when u close it , the screen stays on anyway. I have to open it to pick up a call! wtf! why does it have such a window if I have to open it???
-warranty: oppo policy in europe is to send the phone I dont know where in europe, they will send I dont where in china, someone I dunno will decide if I have to pay to repair the phone. anyway I will pay to ship it. Ok, I accept to save 300€ on s5, m8, z2...and get 1+ if I destroy my find7...

So what is standby time after your fixes? People complained that the phone drains 50% of battery over night. So if the phone can't keep charge for 2-3 days it is useless for me. I do not use phone lot, so always forget to charge, so I need 2-3 days at least and I am getting 5 days with my current Nexus One.

So apparently 2.0b didn't fix the SD card issue so I'm just going to put in my old 16gb Sandisk that I've been using for a year and half and see what it does. If it works then I'll just assume the card I was sent is faulty/fake. Read speeds are between 20-35 megabytes while copying stuff off of the card onto my hard drive so that seems a bit slowish?

It seems like a lot of people are having problems with the SD cards purchased from Oppo. I wonder if they got a bad batch.

I am enjoying mine. I can make it through 2 days on a charge watch videos and movies that sound good on the speakers. I'm not a big picture taker but when I do I am OK with what I get,have a dslr for good pics.
Oh I forgot, flat screen so glass screen protector covers the whole thing.

I play l2r at highest settings and it's gorgeous, audio sounds amazing through the speakers or headphones and Dolby atmos helps alot.
Can't BELIEVE how fast this thing charges and it lasts for ever.. I literally get over a day's use with an average of 7+ hrs SOT! I've never had a phone that lasted like this thing does.. Any other phone was ~5hrs max with customized kernel/roms.. This thing is crushing that stock!
I also LOVE the squared designs as I hate all these rounded edges now a days.
I truly believe this is a reincarnation of the nexus line! If they would just get the last few software issues resolved and we get a few more developers on board.

I am having problems with L2R for the last 3 months. It will just force close no error after 20 mins plus. If I enhance/level up equipment etc then it will force close earlier. I cannot maintain an hours of gaming before it just force closes. Can you advise what settings, firmware version you are using to get such stable gaming?

Am definitely on the list of those with positive vibes for this phone. Bought it only for 250£ fully boxed with recipt and warranty and it's been great. The bad is the screen in bright day light but all else is absolutely fabulous.

Fast charging and a battery that lasts a whole day (my first phone ever that can do that).
Great screen (too bad about the brightness though).
OS is superfast and free of bloatware. Love Nova Launcher for a couple of years now.
Great phone design (I like the blocky design).

The speakers, screen and battery capacity made me instantly purchase this phone, I'm happy with it.

Been my daily user since release date (pre-ordered).. Besides the screen not being bright and an occasional lockup/restart, best phone i've ever owned.

I would like to chime in here and say I'm a very picky sod when it comes to my smartphone choice, I started with HTC as they were willing to experiment and innovative, I loved my One M7 for its front facing stereo speakers and kept with the range till the M9 when (IMHO) the company lost their way, I swapped to a ZTE AXON 7 as that device was amazing for its power and audio, THIS PHONE KICKS ALL THOSE DEVICES TO THE KERB it's got a great battery, amazing screen, speed, raw power, great WiFi connectivity, frelling amazing Audio and sounds brilliant.
I've owned a general release unit since December and dam I love it, have been asked about it a few times every month and I haven't seen anyone else with one so I feel somewhat superior to others. Even my friend who's been a iPhone diehard is jumping ship to this when he upgrades in August even though it's a few months old
Very pleased, very very impressed with Razers first foray into the smartphone market

Honestly the only issues i had with my razer phone(s) was that the first two that i RMAed had speaker issues along with this one i think. But other than that i had no other issues except some freezing issues which i think were currupted app datas.
I just wish the xda dev side was full of more mods and discoveries about this device.

First Impressions of XIAOMI Mi Mix 3

I picked up a XIAOMI Mi Mix 3 from Micro Center today at what I consider a steal considering the hardware (USD $379.98) and after doing some quick research.
Micro Center is a two-and-a-half-hour drive for me and I was already there, so I didn't have the luxury of time for leisurely research. I usually spend weeks, not half an hour, making these decisions. But I used to be a commercial customer before I sold my business, and I made a lot of friends there, so they don't hassle me about returns; and since I was already there, I figured I'd try it out.
My initial impressions are mixed, but more positive than negative.
Positives
The build quality feels very solid. Actually, it feels like a Sherman tank. This is a pretty hefty phone. It has a quality "feel" to it, though. I also like the flat screen, although I guess that's a matter of personal preference. The included case is okay for now, but I ordered a more rugged one, a screen protector, and a leather holster from Amazon. I'm old, but active; and I don't carry a purse.
Functionally, the XIAOMI Mi Mix 3 supports AT&T's network 100 percent, as far as I can tell. That seems pretty amazing for a phone that technically isn't sold in the USA. I've had phones that were targeted to the U.S. market that had mediocre band and protocol support.
The radio reception is also the best of any phone I've ever used where I live, and I've been on AT&T for a long time and used a lot of phones. The LTE works great. I'm getting download speeds of around 50 Mbps, and I live in the boondocks.
The GPS reception is especially incredible, with TTFF of an amazing four seconds, two meter accuracy in 16 seconds, an average C/N0 around 46 dBHz using 32 of the 35 satellites it caught, with some coming in at 59 dBHz. That's pretty amazing for a phone. It's actually better than some airplanes I've flown.
I didn't mess with the cameras much (I don't really use them that often on any phone), but they seem very good to me. I break out my Nikon when I have serious photography to do, so I may not be the best judge of mobile phone quality. The cameras on the Mi Mix 3 seem perfectly adequate to me; but as I said, I'm no connoisseur of cell phone cameras.
The slider for the selfie camera is a nice feature if you hate the notch. I never cared about the notch, but it does bother some people. I also like that the slider stays in place magnetically (more reliable and durable than mechanical latches), although I do wonder whether that affects the magnetometer (assuming the phone has one).
In short, hardware-wise, I'm happy. The Snapdragon 845 is no slouch, and the rest of the hardware in the Mi Mix 3 seems to use it well. I consider it a bargain for the hardware alone.
In terms of performance, it's fast and crisp. I haven't put it through any strenuous tests yet, but It has a nice, fast feel to it.
Setup was completely painless, it auto-provisioned on AT&T with zero configuration needed, and Google and MIUI restored almost everything from Drive with no issues. Even my DND settings were carried over. It was really pretty flawless. The one exception was K-9 Mail. For reasons I neither know nor intend to bother looking into, neither the app itself nor the settings were migrated. I had made backups of everything anyway, so it was no big deal.
Negatives
I wouldn't say that MIUI is quirky so much as that I wonder what the point was of changing things around for no apparent reason. In other words, I don't think there's anything "wrong" with MIUI based on the few hours I've had the phone, but I wonder what advantage there is to it as compared to a stock Android. I can live with it, though. It's not so much a negative as a "just different," really, based on first impressions.
I also don't like the fact that there's no automated desktop backup software. I suppose I can build something easily enough, but there should be desktop backup. Or am I the only one who actually uses a computer anymore? I guess LG's [usually] competent backup software spoiled me.
I'll see if there's a generic Android backup utility out there for Arch Linux or Windows that syncs by WiFi before re-inventing the wheel. It's not rocket surgery; but coding for the sheer joy of coding kind of grew old for me decades ago. I never bothered looking for generic non-root Android automated backup software before because I never had to. There probably are bazillions of perfectly competent solutions out there for Arch (or for Android itself, for that matter).
In fairness, however, I'm a genuine backup nut. I literally have backups of my backups as far as computers are concerned. Within 20 seconds of my saving a document, it has been backed up to an ioSafe USB drive and a local NAS (the ioSafe, which is a backup destination, is in turned backed up to the NAS), and is on its way to BackBlaze. So my OCD about backups may be inflating my annoyance about not including a desktop backup application with the handset.
Back to the Mix 3, I also found the notifications a bit wonky. In addition to having to give permission in multiple places, the notifications use the media volume instead of having their own setting. That doesn't make much sense to me. I can think of plenty of reasons why one might want to control notifications separately from media. The puzzlement, however, is why they coded it out of stock Android. I mean, what advantage is there to justify the time spent removing a slider that was already there?
Then again, maybe the separate notification volume was an LG thing. My last few phones have been LG. Maybe LG coded it into Android.
There's also somewhat more bloatware than I'm accustomed to finding on an unlocked phone, but it seems lightweight and innocuous enough. Some of it might actually be useful. I really haven't done anything to it except push it to the last screen. At least it doesn't include a crap ton of silly games and such.
The only one that annoys me is that I can't uninstall FecesBook (at least not without root). At least, not in the usual way. I can't explain why because of NDA's I've signed, but I'd rather never use a computing device again than have a FecesBook account.
All Things Considered...
I officially have two weeks to decide whether to keep the phone. Micro Center probably would extend that for me because of my long history with them, but I don't want to abuse that relationship. Besides, to weeks will be enough to decide whether my appreciation of the Mix 3's superb (in my opinion) hardware compensates for my lukewarmness toward MIUI.
Based on first impressions, however, I'm pretty sure I will keep the phone. I love the hardware, and I think I can at least learn to live with MIUI (which is more than I can say about my ex, and she was a lot more expensive and quirky than MIUI is). Or I can root it, although that's not something I'd do just because I'm miffed about having to look somewhere else for a setting and having an inactive FecesBook icon hidden in a folder on the last screen.

Well, the phone and I didn't make it through the weekend. It seemed like every time I figured out one problem, another surfaced.
The deal-killer, however, was the sound quality the first time I made an actual phone call. In all seriousness, I got better sound out of tin-can telephones made of two soup cans and a piece of string when I was a kid. It was the absolute worst, almost inaudible sound quality I've ever experienced on any communication device.
So I looked up the problem on their forum, and one piece of advice was to factory-reset the phone after an update that I just got last night. So I did that, and it rejected my password when it rebooted. When I tried to do a password reset on the site (three times), I got no response to the email. And when I tried to check it using the phone number, I got an error message that the account didn't exist.
It's a shame, too, because other than the sound quality, I loved the hardware of the phone. But not being able to hear a phone call makes it useless to me.
Oh, well. Ten hours of driving and a tank and a half of gas isn't the worst thing I've ever been through.
On the bright side, when I swapped the SIM back into the phone the Mix 3 would have been replacing, I decided to put a new spare battery in it, too, and charge it on the way to Micro Center. Lo and behold, it didn't overheat. So maybe it was the battery, rather than the phone, that was having a problem. I'll check it out further this week.

Unlock your bootloader then install AOSP based rom, like Resurrection Remix, all problem solved.
Or if you want to stick with MIUI, try EU rom, no bloatware, no Chinese stuff.

You may be right, but how would that have solved the earpiece problem? That seems like a hardware issue to me. If I held the phone sideways like a wing sticking out of the side of my head, I could hear it. But it was still so scratchy and tinny that I can't imaging listening to it on every phone call. Also, it's not the most convenient way to use a phone. I'm old. I still make phone calls.
It's all academic at this point since I returned the phone. But I'm still interested in the answer just for its own sake. Would an alternate ROM have improved the sound volume and quality? If so, then I regret my hastiness because all in all, I loved the hardware -- except for the earpiece.

Maybe your earpiece speaker had been covered by dust or plastic? The real earpiece is under the screen, you can see it when slide screen down, you can try that and make phonecall to test the sound.
I have no problem with earpiece sound and as far as i known, no one ever complain about it.
And yes custom rom and modder can change the sound quality, there even a mod to turn earpiece speaker into loudspeaker so we had dual rocker.

My reason for buying the Mix 3 in the first place was for a daily driver to replace an aging V20 that has at least one known problem (tired GPS radios) and that I thought was overheating (but which now appears to have had a faulty battery). I didn't buy the Mix 3 as a project phone. I needed a phone to actually use starting today (Monday). I planned to buy something else while I was at Micro Center to return it.
However, because the v20 didn't overheat with a fresh spare battery that I charged during the trip, and because I have another V20 that I use for GPS-dependent apps, I'm not up against a time deadline any more. I like the Mix 3's hardware enough that I may buy another as a project phone.

Toggle the loudspeaker setting on and off when you're on the first call after a reboot. Interesting to know this is a Xiaomi bug, not a Xiaomi.eu bug. Once you've done the toggle trick it'll be fine until you reboot again.
As for roms, if you're rooting, having tried several of the AOSP-based roms I'd recommend Xiaomi.eu, everything will work (including the slider & associated settings), it'll be marginally faster (and it's already fast on AOSP), it'll have marginally better battery life, and it won't randomly reboot or go into a reboot loop when charging wirelessly.

I just ordered a OnePlus 7t as a DD, so I have to wait at least a few weeks before buying another Mix 3 lest the old lady kill me. She just doesn't get it...
I do wish I'd known about the bug and the fix you mentioned because it was actually painful to return the Mix 3, so much did I like the hardware.
