So I played around with a couple of other launchers (LauncherPro and ADW), but have a feeling that TouchWiz might be hardware accelerated by using the GPU chip on the i9000 where as others probably aren't ?
For example enable a resource hungry live wallpaper and open applications. Now scrolling the applications is still very smooth on the touchwiz where as on the other launchers I tried, I can feel scrolling the app list becomes much more choppy because the live wallpaper seems to be running in the background.
That made me wonder if Touchwiz is perhaps using GPU acceleration instuctions taking advantage of the samsung hardware, or perhaps Touchwiz is just more clever to temporarely disable live wallpaper when it's not visible, where the other launchers still have them running in the background when viewing app list.
Maybe it's a placebo effect, but it also felt like phone got warmer using other launchers (indicating they use more processor and perhaps not taking advantage of samsung hardware GPU in the same way like Touchwiz does).

ill give a try to touchwizz right now
I think it runs great to, but as long as you can't set the middle as default, it's not for me. Anyone found a way to do this with rooting yet?

Use SGS Tools.
Doesn't work. Just tried it again on Froyo. :-(
You can change the default page in froyo touchwiz, but you have to edit the .apk to do it. But it's very simple.
SGS tools worked for me to edit touchwiz. I have 3 homepages and set 2 as my default homepage by setting it to 1(0 is the first page). I am on JPM tatyamas lite ROM

How do i do that?
There s an application in the market. Use the keywords sgs default screen. Use it. I think you ll need root though.

Doesn't even take a resource-hungry live wallpaper for me. If I enable any live wallpaper it will make LauncherPro quite laggy, in the app drawer but also a bit on the homescreen itself, whereas TouchWiz stays perfectly smooth.
I guess it would make sense that TW would be better tailored to the SGS it's included with as opposed to other launchers that need to maintain compatibility with everything, but I'm still pretty surprised. My interest is piqued now so I'll just have to give it a go!
I can confirm all findings here. I use launcher pro but its laggy, even with no live wallpaper but with 3 full pages of widgets. Considering gpu performance on benchmarks you expect it to be smooooooooth.
Will be interested to see if the performance improves.

Have a go with Zeam.
Simple, minimalistic and smooooood imo.
Coming from LauncherPro.
The LauncherPro widgets would be sorely missed though
AOSP Froyo Launcher is also very very smooth with/without Live Wallpaper give it a try...
You must push the Apk to System/app to use the Launcher.. ;DD
I´ve the Link push and then enjoy...! ;DD

Gave it a go using TW for a day and I have to admit it does seem a helluva lot smoother than Launcher Pro, even with a LWP on. Colour me impressed!

Yeah, I eventually had to admit defeat and got back to LP for the widgets too. Will see if I can find equivalents to use with TW.

I'm a TouchWiz fan for it's looks and smoothness.
Sure it isn't as customizable as all the other launchers out there, but on it's own TouchWiz looks great IMHO. I know a lot of people who hate the iPhone-esque look though so appearance is just all a matter of personal taste. Still, for me TouchWiz is great; no need to go through the trouble of finding the perfect theme/icons or setting things up perfectly to your liking.
I'm obsessive compulsive though so I guess it really does take me forever to set everything up exactly the way I like them to be. I've tried LauncherPro and some other launchers and I got overwhelmed and tired with all the control I had over the look and feel of my SGS. Don't get me wrong...I love customization and the whole process of doing so...but I'm just too OC.
Added to that was how they just didn't feel as smooth as TouchWiz. Even on a freshly flashed and cleaned up phone alternative launchers don't seem to match TouchWiz in terms of the overall feel. Maybe it's just me
So even if I may not have a great looking and extra-functional dock, resizable widgets, and hundreds of layout possibilities..sometimes simpler is easier and better.
I might change my mind once I get bored of my current layout. Haha!
I'll tinker with the apk's and see what customization possibilities I can unlock while sticking to TouchWiz.
TW: If I wanted an iPhone, I would have gotten one. Scrolling right finding an app drives me insane. I disagree with some in this thread on its performance. IMO it's not fasther than e.g. LP once you put stuff on the home screen
ADW: used to be great, I don't know what they were thinking with the last couple of releases, it has gotten incredibly slow.
LP: love it. Unlike some other people that replied: I hate the widgets they look ugly as they offer no option to make them transperant. Has the prettiest dock and allows you to custom set the homescreen grid. Especially the latter is awesome
Zeam: Love it, very similar to LP in daily usage actually, but faster.
I'm sticking with LP for now because it allow me to set a 5 icon application grid which saves you 2 minutes scrolling through your application grid per day. The dock is the prettiest so I guess it has the best customizability vs performance balance. If just want the fastest out there go with Zeam.
i'd go with LPP too

On froyo you can do a pinch gesture to bring up an overview of all your panes of apps. I find it a quick way to find and jump to the app youre looking for. I feel it's rather zippy especially with voodoo in place. That's just my opinion though! JUst wanted to comment on your complaint about scrolling right.
Been searching for a good launcher for my Archos 70. I tried both ADW and Launcher Pro plus. They both worked good for me. But then i found the Go Launcher it works very well for me,smooth and fast. And it has a built in task manager. It has no widgets
yes the go launcher is the bet right now.
I use it on my 70 and my desire.
I also talked to the developers and metioned so bugs and requested some features and by what the told me some cool things will come up in version 2
Just loaded this up. Being a LauncherPro user I was hoping for a lot and I got it. Best launcher I've played with thus far. Wish it had 7x7 grid support though. Extremely fast.
Try requesting it .maybe they will do that
Had a quick look at the feature list, a few screenshots and a video... What makes it better that LauncherPro? In some ways it looks like a iOS-ripoff and I really hate that (ie Samsung's TouchWiz UI...) I see no need for a task manager/killer.
Looking forward to the first launcher that's 100% made for tablets... Haven't found anything like that yet. Maybe when more people buy tablets, and when Honeycomb shows up in more detail.
Tried it on the archos 101 (firmware 2.0.71) but found it laggier than launcher pro and zeam.
Never tried to launcher before. Coming from launcher pro and now using zeam launcher. It lean, mean and extremely fast. Try it...
im using this launcher for 4 days, and i must say i love it, just uninstall launcher pro. This is so fast love the task manager in main menu. You have my support thanks a lot.
I've been trying to get this on my archos 101 and I can't get it from the market. It doesnt come up when I search for it. I can't get any launcher to come up for that matter.
You'll have to do the market fix.
Try the search for finding it then you will find a lot more Apps.
how do we go about doing the market fix??
i'm having the same problem with not seeing apps in the market
thanks
ADW EX
Anybody tried ADW EX yet?
It's basically a fancier version of the stock ADW, very smooth on my phone (Archos yet to arrive)
Grid up to 10x10 too...
Interested in seeing how this works on the Archos family.
I switched to adw ex. ATM go launcher has some annoying bugs, but I'll watch out for further updates.
I especially like the new mainscreen transition animations on adw ex., and without wallpaper scrolling the animations look smith and nice.
I used LauncherPro, but lack of grid support is annoying when you want to place widgets.. just shifted to Zeam launcher. it supports 7x7 grid and is quite smooth too..
but both have an issue when waking up or coming back to home screen from an app..the screen stays a bit towards the left due to archos buttons and returns to normal only after you swipe at it a little..
That is not a problem of the launcher but of the archos itself, because even the stock launcher has this issue

There's a thread over on ArchosFans that says if you make the first home screen or the next-to-last home screen (when using more than 3 screens) will fix that problem. Haven't tried it yet as I just read it and my tab is at home, but several say that it works in LP & Zeam.
I have been using Zeam launcher for the last 2 weeks, its very fast and feature packed, definately more stable on my 101 than LauncherPro (which runs well on my HTC Desire).
Give it a go.
cant post a link yet...sorry
Zea
Tried Go, ADW, LP & Zeam...love Zeam...
I tried several launchers on my Archos 101. Go launcher ex can only provide a 5x5 grid what makes it kind of useless for a ten inch screen. So i'm back at zeam as well. I'm still waiting at a launcher specifically for tablets.
Zeam is the daddy

Why do lwps make adw so choppy? Its so annoying that I'm kind of forced to use a normal wallpaper unless I want choppyness. The stock launcher, 2.3 launcher, and touchwiz work perfectly fine with them. Is there some option or something to make it work better?

Why can't ADW just work well? I use stock. Try contacting Anderweb and convince him to stop wasting his time.

haha, amen.
ADW has never worked for me on any devices I've owned that used it. I do like that you can get pretty deep into the settings, but unfortunately, none of those settings seem to be able to remedy the choppiness and general lag (at least for me). the only setting that ever made a noticable difference for me was disabling the wallpaper hack (or enabling? whatever the opposite of what it is by default is). I am not on the development side of things, but I feel like with these launchers, the more feature-packed they are, the more buggy they are.
launcher pro was so much smoother for me, but it force closed, again on multiple devices, every time the phone booted.. and I don't like that.
I finally went to virtuous and am giving it a shot with its stock launcher... no issues thus far. of course going to a sense rom isn't really a solution to your problem. I'm getting used to it but I do miss CM.
Don't get me wrong, adw is VERY smooth (adw ex at least) but lwps just slow the bujeezus outta that thing. I don't really use them often but I mean really. Stock has no lag or choppyness, neither 2.3, neither touchwiz, neither sense. It seems that all launchers that come with the phone work fine with live wallpapers but not market ones. I tried launcherpro, adw, adw ex, and go and they were all pretty incompatible with live wallpapers.

Interesting... You are on a G2 or Desire Z I suppose?
I am, and I found all launchers to be smooth up to very smooth on my device, with the 'Grass' live wallpaper set. I am running the latest nightlies of CM7.
Of the different launchers, GO Launcher was 'worst' in app list scrolling and Launcher Pro's shortcut bar just doesnt appeal to me. Zeam is very cool as well, but doesnt offer widget resizeability. So for the time being I'm stuck with ADW, which is very very smooth both in homescreen swiping as well as (vertical) app list scroll orgies.
Where does your setup differ from mine? Do you have a lot of background tasks (FB, Twitter, ...) or a taskkiller or similar at work?
...I almost forget: or a lot of widgets? Animated content? Semi transparent widgets or the likes...?
I have fully transparent widgets to fit my theme and I am using the paginated app drawer. When I scroll in the paginated drawer, it is very choppy. Also scrolling on the desktop is choppier than usual and the app drawer animation is EXTREMELY choppy. I am using adw ex.

Hey I wanted to know why replace stock ics launcher with another ics launcher!?!?! Would a replacement ics launcher have less of the occasional lag or stutter or improve battery lice!?!?! My phone sits on my dash while I'm driving around, and I rather like it in landscape mode for listening to the radio and such. Stock Launcher doesn't do landscape. I switched to Nova Launcher just for landscape.

It does if you use MCR with landscape capable ICS launcher.
I don't like the ICS launcher so I've been using LauncherPro. I'm surprised it works since it hasn't been updated since May, but it's been 100% smooth and stable. Since it's abandonware, I just hope someone else releases one with the swipe action on the dock icons before LauncherPro stops working.

Do yourself a favor and try out Nova Launcher. It offers all of the benefits of the stock launcher (hardware acceleration) and even the same layout and style of the app drawer and home screen but adds so many additions such as changing the number of rows and columns, changing the number of home screens, landscape mode, adding more icons to the dock at the bottom.
+1 for nova, stock ics launcher with all the needed little extras

i personally hate having icons/widgets on my screen. i want it kept clean. instead, i use launcher pro and just rely on the 3-page dock at the bottom of the screen. i wish there was a launcher that was just a dock system and allowed you to make all the docks you want.
p.s. i also like the "hidden apps" feature much more then what other launchers offer.
Launchers
So I'm super picky about my phone (Crack Flasher), I have tried a few here is what I have eperienced so far.
Launcher Pro (Was my fav on past devices)
- runs sluggist compared to the ICS launchers, its not really bad, but you don't have the smooth feeling you are now used to on the SGN.
- Has landscape and lots of other goodies
- Will return to this if they upgrade it for ICS to run silky smooth
BRD Launcher
- Runs good, but because you have to use PPI moding it's super annoying when you want to install items or update them
- Couldn't get the landscape to work
Going to try Novo next.
I'm hoping it works with Landscape. I hear that you're ROM has to support Landscape for the Launcher, but this doesn't make sence to me since Launcher Pro works landscape no matter what.
I'll update after I try Novo Launcher...

Update:
I wish I would have tried Novo first.
- Landscape works perfectly (you can shut it off if you dont like it)
- Runs Smooth
- Lots of options
- Can remove search bar
- Grid is super customizable
- Can Hide Icon lables
There are plenty more but you get the point. So far best launcher for ICS on my Gnex.
FYI: Tested all of these on GummyNex. LTE
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=476483
How many of the great layouts there do you think were created, or even possible on Stock Launchers?
I read this thread and installed Nova Launcher. It is a really nice ICS launcher, the best ICS launcher and one of the best launchers out there. Only reason I really got it was because of the landscape orientation. Google messed up there.
Wondering if anybody else has seen or used this launcher.
I'm trying it out but I have my doubts as to whether I'll keep it. I'm currently using the Anaconda rom so obviously it works on ICS. So far I'm liking it. It's very fast and very stable. What is the best part is that is very small it doesn't use so much memory. It's fully customizable even to the point where you can turn your icons on there axis and resize them.
Just search for the lightning launcher in the play store. Check out the screen shots and tell me what you think.
Looks pretty nice, good that it's lightweight as well. I'm still perfectly happy with Cyanogen's Trebuchet Launcher even in its Alpha state as we have it, but always good to see more variety.
The reflections are pooched in the launcher lol...
But I do like the icon rotation and resizing, might have to try this one out.
the reflections can be turned off or adjusted by length, depth, density, etc...
not too impressed with it, except for the free mode which i've suggested to every other launcher dev (adw, launcher pro, go launcher, apex launcher, nova launcher, etc etc) in the past and all the devs said it's not possible... so wtf. the menus are really hard to navigate, and it doesn't offer an easy way to change the background.
has potential, but right now it's a no-go.
Love it on my Droid 1. It's the fastest launcher with the fewest redraws that I've been able to find. It's also more customizable in way that are important to me than any other launcher. 5 star app.
Here's what I did with it...I like one simple home page.
