I pulled the original hboot before updating my phone with the engineering hboot. If anyone wants it, it is here.

instructions are similar to perm root except use this file as the "if" param.
my guess is if you are already "s-off", you can just su and go straight to the "dd" command.

I was waiting for someone to post this! You deserve a beer!
sorry to rain on your parade.
This HBOOT has been available for as long as the RUU has been around. Check the MD5

I did not have a copy of the RUU and didn't think to pull it from there. I pulled it via
dd count=2048 if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18 /sdcard/hboot_m4g
before updating my phone with the eng hboot.
Anyway, thanks for verifying that i did it correctly.
updates to permaroot guide for turning s back on to follow.
can you flash this through fastboot if you simply change it to an nb0 file?
Might be a very Noob question but since I rooted through visionary did this replace a my original hboot with and engineering hboot?
rooting with visionary does not change the hboot image.
thank you.

I'm new to this how to do I install the original hboot via the permant root commands?
to write (restore) the hboot use the following command as root in a adb shell terminal or the terminal application on the phone.
assuming that your image file is called "hboot_m4g".
dd if=/sdcard/hboot_m4g of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18

Go to the development section and look at the sticky. You'll find one that has the how to revert back to stock using a hex editor. In the 6th page of the how to thread I posted a link to a hex editor. It's cake.

Mmhhh.... Tasty
Did it.... But now superuser is still there lol ... I want to go back to CM 6 but what should I do so if I ever want to go back to stock it will be there, also what should I do to get all my apps over on CM 6.1
and now my wifi doesnt work, It just says error when I click the check box on in settings
Stock image did you use? I used the one linked in the how to and had no problem.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
I used that one as well, also did superuser still show up when you were back to stock?
Your probably didn't flash all the way. After restoring from an official image you should be completely stock.
how do I flash all the way? I did what the steps said, and this is what im running now:
Android 2.2
Baseband:
12.22.60.09bU_26.02.01.15_M2
Kernel Version:
[email protected]#1
build number:
1.19.531.1 CL255798 release-keys
I see that it still says cyanogen mod on the kernel version...
But when I boot up it boots regular and does not have the CM 6.1 screen and has the G2 screen instead, and looks like stock froyo....
I try using the method stated above and get the error, then Im stuck on this part I guess:
"**IMPORTANT**
If the flash has failed you must reboot back into the OS and use HexEditor which i have attached to the thread. DO NOT PROCEED UNTIL YOU HAVE DONE THIS!!
Open up an ADB Shell and run the following command:
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p17 of=/sdcard/misc.img
this will then export the misc.img file we need to edit to the root of the sdcard.
Mount your sdcard and save the misc.img file to your PC and Open the file with HexEditor.
You should now see the version number on the right hand side of the application and it should read "1.22.531.8" YOU MUST CHANGE THIS TO "1.19.531.1" you can now save the file as miscnew.img and place it on the root of your sdcard and then unmount the sdcard from windows.
Now go back to your ADB Shell and run the following command
dd if=/sdcard/miscnew.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p17
you can now make sure you have copied the PC10IMG.zip file to the root of your SDCARD and power off your phone and proceed to step 2."
I am using terminal emulator and it says "cannot open for readermission denied, " when I enter this in the emulator "dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p17 of=/sdcard/misc.img"
NVM forgot to su lol silly me
will keep updated on my progress
Okay, I am back to stock, thanks to you all who pointed me in the right direction... Now If I go back to CM 6.1, what should I do to back up my phone in its stock state?

You can only back up the phone from it's stock rooted state. Correct?
Anyways, if you going to reroot the phone I highly suggest you use rage instead of visionary.

Start here. The instructions and files are all there and work. I've just done 3 G2s using this method and had no problems at all.
Also, you'll need to get adb working on your PC to be able to use rage.

That guide will let you downgrade to the stock ROM, yes. There's a note at the bottom saying it's not a rooting method (not sure why that note is there really), is that what you mean ?

Think I figured it out. You are using this 2.2 root method on a 2.3 ROM? chmod from shell/terminal does not work on 2.3.3/2.3.4 without already having su. Will need to look at other ways to root (several ways posted in this forum) if you are.

newtybar, which guide u've used? Still searching for solution to downgrade/root Gingerbread OTA on Desire Z.
If you are on Gingerbread you should be using a downgrade guide first found here. Then you can do the rooting and s-off guide found in the wiki. If you have questions you can used IRC (if you're familiar with it) and go to #g2root where they do know what they're doing.
First I wanted to say hi to all of you. Evo 4G is my second Android phone. I'm still a noob in training but I'm getting by.
I'm having a bit of a issue with trying to use some apps for root only and keep getting that I need to be rooted. Yes S-Off is displayed but I'm still running into this issue no matter what. Did I miss something? I'm still searching the forum to find a answer but I haven't found anything as of yet.
Let me know what you guys think.
Thanks

Edit: I figured out what the problem was. Me being stupid and not reading enough. Mods go ahead and lock/delete this thread.
to double check, there is an app in the market called "root check" by joeykrim.
and for apps to gain access to the phone you should have the app "superuser" it gives other apps permission to access root.
As someone previously stated, you'll need an app called "superuser" to allow apps to use root permissions.

This.
Running Revolutionary Roots your phone, but you need superuser to give programs root access. To give programs root access, you will need a rooted ROM with the superuser application or just download the superuser app.

Yeah I figured that out after reading the sticky at the beginning. My fault for not paying attention. I'm now rooted and loving it.
Thanks for the reply's guys.
I really did it now!!!
Ok so I'm back to ask some questions due to a noob mistake. Now I have been reading many of the threads that are available to fix my actual issues that I'm dealing with. I'm going to be very detailed so I apologize in advance.
So like a dumb dumb I decided to unroot my Evo as I was sure/ uncomfortable using the rooted OTA update to up date. So now I did some more reading and I did not need to unroot. Sorry I dont' know what I was thinking.
I've tried to run Revolutionary but all it does is aborts the operation everytime. I tried to change the recovery from Clockwork to Amon RA as I read that it is better so I tried to do that too. Nope that doesn't work either.
I was able to update the root OTA update but that was all that was done. So now I'm here asking for more help as I did more reading how to fix the current issue I'm having and its not working.
PLEASE Help me or guide me in the right direction to fix this.
This is all I am trying to accomplish:
1. Figure out why and what happend and get my Evo rooted
2. Apply the Amon RA recovery
Now if I need to completely wipe my phone I will do it if that is what you think is needed to be done. I know how to back up my app/ contacts etc. So just assist this dumb dumb please!
Anyone have any ideas?

First, I would flash an unrooted stock ROM - the latest, if possible (see this post).
Then, try rooting via Revolutionary again (revolutionary.io). Sometimes during the unrooting process, everything isn't completely restored to stock, so you might just need to flash a completely stock ROM to get back to the point where Revolutionary will work again.

Thanks for the heads up on this info. Now with the Stock RUU being RUU_SuperSonic_GB_Sprint_WWE_4.53.651.1_Radio_2.15 .00.0808_NV_2.15_release, does the 2.15 represent the HBOOT? As mine is the 2.16 or does that not matter?

The file name has nothing to do with the HBOOT version. It doesn't matter. If the HBOOT version you currently have is newer than the version in the RUU, it will simply skip updating it.

All you need to is flash another hboot for the evo. (Any of them will work. Doesn't really matter. Look around for the files and a guide is out there I'm sure. If not, PM me. Anyway, flash it. And then run revolutionary. It should work then.
I did not know that, tommytomatoe. But regardless, what I suggested would work if my thinking is correct.

He said he has Hboot 2.16. If I'm not mistaken you cannot downgrade your Hboot version from something like 2.16 to 2.15 or 2.10. Either way, Revolutionary will be able to root 2.16 just fine. Seems like all he needs to do is follow Captain Throwbacks advice to get his phone out of "What the hell are you doing to me" mode.
I have yet to perform the flash. I got caught up at work late last night. I'll do it tonight for sure when I get off work.
Thank you all for the input and I'll let you all know if my Evo will let me get it out of ""What the hell are you doing to me" mode.

Rizzoizzo made a great guide on flashing the first rom for beginers, check out the general section and it will be within the first few pages. Pretty much just pick a rom, put on sd and boot to recovery, there you will flash it, then reboot
Now that you are rooted there are many new tweaks and mods to do but first grab a custom rom, you will find those in the developers section

Yep that's the right thread, be sure to thank rizzoizzo
There are many many roms that everything works so its hard to pick one for you, it all depends on you. If you like sense they tend to be slower than cm and other aosp roms but may be prettier
If you need 100% no issues the closest would be something with a gingerbread base but newer roms work damn near perfect too. Try some out and see where it gets you
