[Q] Can we create our own hub. - Windows Phone 7 General

Can we create our own hub with sub menues/ applications.
Let say, I want to create my personalized hub/tile on desktop/main page. In this hub I want to put the applications and items of my own choice.
In this way my main tile will not looks dirty/messy ?

Hey mate...This is a good idea,I know what you mean is something like folders in Iphone.Unfortunately, currently WP7 don't support it.

You are correct.
You are correct. I means folder kind of stuff.

Custom folder hubs, that is one awesome idea!

Not at the moment but that would be a great idea for Microsoft to add to it.

TouchWiz 3 config file/db

Hi there. I'm a i9000 TouchWiz lover, moreover it's app's drawer management: I use grouping a lot of apps by type.
About this, I'd have a couple of questions:
- is there a way to insert blank pages among the application to keep up the grouped icons together, without moving them to the end again and again ?
- is there any backup tool to save the application layout or some file to copy in a rooted SGS to have the sequence stored in case of reset ?
Thank you
How do you "group" icons?

... simply by putting them together by kind. And moving again and again to reserve space for news.
My problem was actually a way to put a new blank page among the others, not only at the rightmost end of the sequence, just like on the homescreen...
Thanks

Actually I'm looking for one of these apps, which should be able to create folder/groups on the application dock, not on the homescreens.
Any hint about ?

Can you do this with the Samsung Focus?
If anyone can get the HTC HUB Live Title to not show the apps to the left I would use it for weather in a heartbeat. It's the only thing that has me from using it.
My transparencies and my colors:

i believe i read yesterday that microsoft may be open to allowing 3rd party customization such as spb shell and what not. if they do this i may get a wp7 device. the current square tiles are boring IMO.
thanks....

Simple Restart Application

I own a TMobile hTC HD7 and I have been waiting patiently for a "Restart/Soft Reset" Application to hit the Marketplace. I am actually quite surprised that not more people are interested in a simple app like that. There are countless times when my phone will start acting up or not loading applications properly, so I am constantly restarting my phone. A soft reset app would be a great addition to my phone app collection. This is more of a request as opposed to a rant. While I'm not as talented as some of the developers here, but I am quite sure that a simple restart application wouldn't be insanely hard to develop. Is there anyone out there that is willing to help me out? Or anyone else who thinks this would be a good idea? Or am I alone in this? Lol
Sent from my HD7 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
yeah Me too.. I agree with you.. I hope someone will make a restart software or a task manager software...
Well its nice to know that I wasn't the only one who would like to see a Soft Reset Application with the Windows Phone 7 theme and feel as the UI. I hope someone amazing comes across this thread and makes this a reality.

Does it actually need a UI? Wouldn't a tile pinned to start do just fine? I mean, what would be included in the UI apart from a "reboot" button?
Well i guess it wouldn't need some crazy elaborate UI.... Just an icon nice enough to put on my home page.

Has a skilled developer heard my plea? And is willing to develop this totally useful application?

I personally don't see a need for such an app but I'll knock something together over the weekend. So basically just an icon you place on your home screen that, when pressed, reboots your phone? right?
Yes something along those lines.... Obviously something that kinda fits the whole Windows Phone 7 Metro Theme... But the reason why I thought a UI would be necessary... Would be a Settings page... To have the icon that is placed on the homeacreen able to do different functions that each user could specify on their own. But definitely a way to simply Restart the phone...
Sent from Projekt hTC HD7
And yea man.. Thanks a lot for attempting this.... Like I have stated before... I am not a developer myself otherwise I would've made something like this a while ago... But I am quite sure that this wouldn't be an insanely difficult task.... But regardless your efforts are well appreciated... Looking forward to seeing this evolve.

Well, that just confused me again
Either you want a tile which will reboot your phone (for which I personally see no use - as it's easy enough to just press the power button for 2 seconds) or you want ... err, well ... something completely different
In any case, I've written an app that will do just this - clicking it will ask you if you want to reboot or shutdown the device. No bells or whistles - this is all it does. Will have to tidy up the code a bit, but I'll get it attached here later tonight or tomorrow.

You'd be surprised
There are no APIs available for this so I've had to write native code to get it working - which means it will never be available in the marketplace and will only run on developer-unlocked devices.
Yes, this will be a handy tool. Another added feature I've missed on WP7. This & a screen capture app are all I'm really missing, app-wise that is.
O man.. That kinda sucks for me... I don't have a unlocked device... Mine is Tmobile hTC HD7... but whatever then... I'm glad someone out there tried.. And allowed others to benefit from it... Thanks

Hi all have used the DLL Import work here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1006331
To create a simple restarter. Click the app and restart your phone. As it uses the native API's it can't be put on the marketplace but for anyone with a dev unlocked phone simple deploy the XAP and all is good.

[HOWTO][MANGO] Put your app in the Settings hub. Now includes description changing!

Mango allows us to put things in the settings hub. This is pretty easy to achieve, just go to your project, open your WMAppManifest.xml and add this on the <App>-tag:
Code:
HubType="268435456"
Now deploy your xap to emulator or to a real device. You can find it under the Settings-menu.
Tested & works on Mango Emulator and on Samsung Omnia 7 (Mango RTM)
To change the description see this post: link.
this can get interesting. ill check it out.
can we create another app hub called APPs and put all the apps there instead of having it populated in a long list in the programs list?

I have no idea, but I'd say we can't. Someone needs to find out what that HubType number means
Interesting. Though, once it is installed, how is it uninstalled? A tap&hold on the option in settings shows nothing... so is there another way?

You need XAP with the same app id that does not go to the settings hub, just deploy it and uninstall

Possibly it's a bitmask? Not that that really clears anything up, but 268435456 is 10000000000000000000000000000 in binary.

Interesting. Gotcha. Slightly annoying implementation. But then again, I guess most devs aren't supposed to use this hubtype anyway.
Any idea on how to customize the description text that appears below the entry in the settings menu? I tried looking, but I can't find any lines or strings that seem to have any effect.

I made a project template for you, just open it in visual studio and it has samples for customizing the text. 2 ways to do it, in WMAppManifest and in code, just look at my sample it is very easy.
Slacker is on the Music Hub and it shows HubType="1" in the manifest. Non-music hub apps just don't have any HubType in the manifest.

Settings list uses HubType too.
Yes, I am aware that this entire topic is about that. I was mentioning it because it was not mentioned before in the discussion about the Music Hub.
Hey, mate thanks for your tutorial.
But I'm still quite confused, cuz I can basicaly just change the tile title within WMAppManifest in order to change the gray discription in your sample app, but when I do it upon my own app, it doesnt shows up....
e.g I change the official youtube app, added HubType=xxx, and edited WMAppManifest, change the tile title into "sample discription", but this text dosent shows up below the big settings entry name.
Could u tell me how to do that by only changing the WMAppManifest.xml file? w/o re-assembling dll files. Thanks

[Q] Design advice required

Hi All, I'm a long standing Windows developer who is dipping his toes into mobile development and Android, what is the preferred method of creating a form ( in Windows speak ) to enter / edit data. For example I have a database of contacts and I want to be able to create / edit them in a separate window. I know I can create a separate activity to do the work there but that seems overkill and also if I'm only editing three or four fields it would look ridiculous on a 10 inch tablet. I've looked at alertdialog and DialogFragment but I don't think they are meant for what I'm trying to do.

To be specific, are you asking how to make it look or how to code it?
From what I'm understanding, you're doing a DialogFragment as you've spoken--try customizing it.
Maybe if you mock up what you are trying to do we could give you a better option.

What I'm asking is what class should I use that resembles a Windows form, I'm OK coding ( I do it for a living ) I keep reading about Fragments and the like but can't find an example that doesn't take up the whole screen, is there such an animal in Android ? Maybe I'm looking for something that doesn't exist, thanks for your interest

I would take a stab at an Alert Dialog. It sounds like you just want a new window/modal/form to pop up and have editable characteristics. I believe the alert dialog is the closest you will get without hand coding. You can always fake it by creating an animation that gives the appearance of a form.

The most simple way for me to explain would be to point you towards the 2D Graphics section of the Android Developers documentation. This is the best starting point.
