I was wondering, If i flash a new version of gapps over what I already have on my device, will that update all of those google apps? or will it do nothing?
I ask because i have been going back and forth lately from cyanogen 6.1 to slidemeroot5. i know that obviously the biggest difference between these two roms is that one is 2.2 and the other is 2.1. but aside from that i have noticed that google talk appears to be a little different. is this because of the updated version of gapps that i was using with cyanogen?
I want to use slidemeroot5 but with updated gapps. if i flash a new version, will this solve my dilemma? thanks

I honestly think that some of the apps may update and some may not. It all depends on if the apps are built into the rom I guess. Its worth a try though. Nothing bad should result in trying to update GAPP.

Aren't those 2 apps baked into the rom already?

2.2 and 2.1's gmail app looks different because they are different. Google turned gmail and possibly a few other apps into a standalone app with the Froyo 2.2 rom. 2.1's gmail app isn't standalone, it's built into the rom.

Idk either. Lmao. Your best bet is to wipe and you should be good, or try going to applications and then check if the files are in there. If it shows up then delete it and see.

Well in the update text (open the gapps zip and look for it) you'll notice a line that says something to the effect of
Code:
Format:SYSTEM
or it may be a bit more specific like this
Code:
delete("/system/app/googlevoice.apk");
That's where your apps went.

I tried upgrading to Fresh Rom 3.1.0.1 but I'm took hooked on the Droid-X keyboard, I had to go back to Eclair Fresh Rom.
I tried CM6 out, bad ass rom btw but I'm so used to Sense, I wanted to stay on Fresh.
Now the Droid-X keyboard will not work on ForYo I heard but what does CM6 have? Sure looks like the Droid-X to me, re-skinned black. Matter of fact I've seen the Droid-X keyboard re-skinned black so I know it was done.
I snagged CM6, ripped it's keyboard apk and tried to install it on Fresh, which Fresh FroYo, which is told me I would be replacing my existing keyboard, then it told me it couldn't install.
Is there a way to remove the factory keyboard with 2.2 and push that one in and have it work or could you devs make it work?
If I'm on the wrong track here, let me know but the one IN CM6 sure looks like the Droid-X running on 2.2 to me.
Is the CM6 keyboard the native 2.2 keyboard?
On a related note, can someone post the .apk for the native 2.2 keyboard?
CM6 is using the stock froyo keyboard with the hidden number panel that you slide up to open. At least RC1 was, and I doubt the nightly would be any different. Correct me if I'm wrong please.
I believe the keyboard in CM6 is the stock Froyo 2.2 keyboard. I'm not sure if you removed the HTC one if it would default to that one since it's not already available when you try to chose a different input method.

I could be totally wrong, but doesnt RM ReMove stuff? Delete it? Anyway, I took the keyboard from CM6, pushed it to system/app, reset, and it now shows up in input method, but force closes when selected. Must be relying on a lib file or something.
I have Netarchy's ROM installed, and i too fell in love with the CM6 keyboard. So i found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=744373 and now i have the CM6 Keyboard on my ROM. Works Flawless. No FC r anything.

You are AWESOME. Worked like a charm. Thanks a lot!
So then the CM6 keyboard, which is stock ForYo 2.2 keyboard, is the same keyboard the Droid-X was using on 2.1 Eclair?
I'm looking at both the one released as the Droid-X keyboard (Eclair), the white one and the one from CM6 which is black, they look the SAME to me other then color. Both are multi-touch etc too.
I'll have to check out that thread. Just leaving work so I'll check when I get home.

The Droid X keyboard is a customized version of the stock Android 2.1 keyboard.
The CM6 keyboard IS the stock Android 2.2 keyboard.
The 2.2 keyboard has the feature that lets you drag up to get the number row, this isn't CM6 specific. I don't remember the CM6 keyboard supporting multi-touch, I think I even tried.
Hey guys, I looked around and couldn't find anything but. 8s there any way to get swype back on CM6? Thanks for replies in advance.

I used that version and it's quite fugly. There a way to skin it?
Is this the version of Swype from the original 2.1 slide rom or is it some dodgy low-res knockoff?

Its the same res, but blue instead of black. Also, the swype that comes with the slide is 1.29.x and the one I downloaded and am running is 1.60.x, and it runs much better.

weird. Is there a special way to install swype or something? I tried installing swype with astro, but swype is not showing up as an input method...
when I pressed launch (via app manager) it says activity not found: com.swype.android.inputmethod
Lol, I was just asking about this in my question thread. It might not be installing because it needs to changed from a .zip to .apk. that's just what was suggested to me. Haven't tried yet

lol nvm I just found out >_>
go setting->language & keyboard settings-> enable swype and you're good to go
speaking of which, is there a swype keyboard of similar version yet with a different skin? or does the later versions make a significant improvement? The blue one looks kinda eh on the screen =\
The keyboard in 1.60 is bigger more like the size htc_ime

Both of the APKs that were linked say that they're expired is there another version I can use?
Running Myn's 2.2 RLS 5 I believe.
So I've got contacts from school, old jobs, old friends, etc. But I don't talk to 90% of them. I've got a single group, either Friends or My Contacts, whatever, that I want to sync and leave the rest of the contacts in my Gmail and off my phone. How do I go about doing this?
I've been doing some searching, and what I have found so far is that it's not possible with a Sense ROM. Sense uses the 'People' app instead of the Android default Contacts app. The people app doesn't have this feature, but the stock contacts one does.
I use LauncherPro, and I don't think I use any of the Sense widgets, but since Sense is in the ROM I'm still using it even though it's not my launcher?
Do I have to go to an AOSP ROM to get this feature? Thanks!
I am assuming you don't want those old contacts, etc to be displayed on your phone? I currently do not have a Sense ROM on but I think there might be a display option in your settings menu.
Go into contacts > menu > display options > YOUR_GOOGLE_ACCT > check which contact group you want.
While it will sync all your numbers to your phone, only certain groups will be displayed.
Once again, not sure if this is on Sense. But see if you have that option.
Yeah, that doesn't work on sense because the "contacts" app isn't there. Sense uses the "people" app and it doesn't have that option.

Not sure since I'm not on Sense. But as a suggestion, since you are using LauncherPro, you might want to just switch over to an AOSP ROM. You can't use Sense widgets on LauncherPro so it is there just taking up space anyway.
I recommend CM7 RC2. Has wifi and a native wifi tether that works beautifully. Pretty stable, I haven't found bugs. Very fast.
That's what I'm wondering if I have to do and may go that route. However, I do use hdmi out and 4G on occasion.

Both work on CM7 now. You need the latest nightly.
4G works on CM7 RC2. For HDMI mirroring, you need the latest nightly. Forgot what # they added that in but the latest will have it.

Coorrrreccttt...and the latest nightly is 30. Flashed it this morning during calculus III...xD
Since I think that's the only option I guess that is the route I will have to go. What's the point of running a sense rom if you use Launcher Pro or ADW Launcher then? The sense dialer and people contacts? Hmm..
Didn't realize CM7 had gotten 4G and HDMI working.
Only takes a few minutes to back everything up and flash the ROM so I'll give it a go..=) Thanks!

Honestly...I couldn't tell you..haven't ran Sense since December, after I finally got rooted. Be sure to flash the latest gapps after you flash the rom. And 4G has been working ~ 2months, and HDMI mirroring, fully working within the last 2 weeks.

Enjoy your new screen off animation! LOL
My wife uses an unrooted G2. She likes using Google Talk video chat on her computer. She would love to be able to use it on her phone, even without a front facing camera. I've read elsewhere that Cyanogen has started incorporating 2.3.4 and Video Chat into the nightly builds for the G2. I'm hesitant to root and flash her phone with the current nightly build, since I don't to risk giving her an unstable phone that has broken other features she used to using.
What's the rule of thumb for jumping to a CM build in a case like this? Do you wait for a "stable" build to be posted? If so, about how long it take from the time they start incorporating the stuff you want into nightly builds before it becomes stable (a week, a month, etc)?
just do a nandroid of current rom then flash latest build anf give it a try, some builds are pretty stable aand have lot of fixes with current issues, if bad and have issue you can wipe and restore
Or use tango or fring... or search for the apk that has the updated video chat incorporated
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA Premium App
I tried tango and fring, but neither of them work with the desktop browser version of google talk video chat. We've got the whole extended family on gtalk vc, so in order for video chat on the phone to be value added, it has to work with that. Thanks though.
Just root, download the google talk 1.3 flashable zip, flash with rom manager or in recovery, all done.

How's the stability of 7.0.2? Any significant bugs? Also, I see that 7.0.3 is now in the list of stable builds -- were there be any reason for me not to flash that instead of 7.0.2?

I did push a new googleservicesframework.apk while trying an alternate method. That just gave me force closes when trying video of audio. I flashed the same gapps as you and it stopped force closing and I get two way audio and video.
I'm running CM 7.0.2 with pershoots kernel on a G2.
Jgariano,
7.0.2 is perfectly stable for me. No problems to speak of. I read the only change in 7.0.3 is a security fix, so no major changes.

Hmmmm, I wonder if I need to flash a googleservicesframework.apk as well... I don't have any options for video, and the audio link is greyed out, although it if pushed, it says 'calling' but doesn't really do anything. There is no video option at all, and when viewing my status from another g-mail account, it doesn't show the video camera icon.

I have the same 'problem' with google talk. Everything works fine except the video calling. I can't select it. (When i open talk and then click on my own name, there isn't a box i can check to accept video calling).
i have tried to flash it too,but gtalk disappeared in the applist
why?
anyway to get that apk file to work on other roms, Sense and or AOSP? i searched around and same people were asking same question as me but for the desire. they had no help in the thread (dated back in 2010)

Have you tried extracting the apk and pushing it via adb or root explorer? If I'm not mistaken miui is like sense in a way, some of the core apps won't function without the launcher and main components. I mean the music app and a few others will work on other roms but main apps like phone, setting, SMS, all need the miui framework to actually work. I could be wrong but that's why no one ever mentions it because they'd rather just run miui itself.

Im sure many people have tried it but why run the sms app and not just the whole miui. It's just going to force close because its missing the other miui components. The sense mms.apk is the same way; it wont work without the HTC framework. Someone tried to get the miui sms apk working back when I had my cdma heroc and failed. Moral of the story: just run miui (which I hate lol).
