[q] data sync hangs - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Meh!!!
My data syncs have been hanging lately and totally draining my battery unless I go in and cancel it. Sometimes it's Facebook for HTC, sometimes it's Twitter, sometimes it's Calendar. I can replicate the issue by going into my contacts, selecting a user and trying to update their events and updates (in which case it's fb for htc that hangs)...
If I then go into Accounts & sync in my settings, I can see the sync icon not spinning or doing anything and the option to sync now is available, but if I back out, cancel sync is available instead of sync all as if it does know something is syncing or attempting to...
I like the integration to fb, twitter, etc. in my contacts, but it sucks to suddenly be hanging up and draining my battery.
Any help will get 5 starts and a big thank you

[Q] Facebook for HTC Sense Alternatives?

Are there any alternatives for Facebook for HTC Sense? It seems to be hanging up my auto-sync all the time and I get tired of having to kill it. However, I have a feeling it's the only thing that will work with HTC's People app, since the Facebook app's sync doesn't seem to work.

can't you set it to sync like once a day? I have mine (HTC) syncs just contacts once a day and not sync feed at all. Turned off sync on the Facebook (Android) version.
You are probably have it set to sync freqently for feeds and such.
settings -> accounts & sync -> check it out
hope it helps!

I have it set to every day, but it seems like when it goes to do that sync every day, it never ends. The sync icon will be there all day until I get tired of it, go into Accounts & Sync and cancel the sync. Accounts & Sync doesn't show anything "actively" syncing at the time, but if I remove Facebook for HTC Sense I never have the problem, so it has to be the cause.
Does Facebook (Android) actually work in Accounts & Sync? It shows up in the list when I add an account, but selecting it does nothing.
You can just go on facebook with the browser. The mobile touch and full site work fine.

[Q] Facebook contacts added to phone

Hi,
I've got an issue, not a massive one but it bugs me nonetheless.
Currently, when I tap the Phone button from the home screen it brings up a list which shows my recent call list, if I scroll down I get a long list of all my contacts. The thing I find annoying is that the long list includes all of my Facebook "friends" that have a telephone number listed.
What I would like is for this list to only contain my contacts (copied over from my SIM), and for the ones that are linked to a Facebook account, to have their status etc updated. I do not want my random Facebook "friends" to be in the list.
The most recent thing I've done to try and solve this issue is to go into the Facebook app on the phone and change the 'Sync Contacts' settings (Menu-> Settings) to 'Don't sync'. I then went into (phone) Settings-> Applications-> Manage Applications-> All (tab)-> Contacts storage-> Clear Data. I then copied my contacts back over from the SIM. (I've also tried the 'Sync with existing contacts' option as well)
All was well for a while, my contacts linked up again and I got facebook details for my contacts when calling them. However I noticed to my annoyance that my Phone list now contains my facebook contacts again!
I notice under Settings->Accounts and Sync I have two (removable) Facebook accounts, one is Facebook, the other is Facebook for HTC Sense. Does anyone know if it would help to remove either of these accounts?
Can anyone help me find a way to solve this issue (preferably without extra software or going through the People menu)?
Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks,
Grim.
I just fixed this myself.
I think it's something to do with how HTC Facebook interacts with official Facebook. If I turned of syncing on both (but left contact sync disabled in both) I'd still get contacts in Phone (and also in suggestions in sms app). If I removed both, then added Facebook official only I'd still get them.
In the end, opening up Facebook on my PC and going into privacy then apps and disabling Facebook for HTC Sense seemed to solve it to me. I could then use the official Facebook app without getting all these contacts I'd never use.
I didn't care about getting contact pictures and stuff so I never tried letting official Facebook sync with existing contacts only, but it might work properly.
Hope this helps, completely unscientific but it seemed to for me!

Hi JBrizz thanks for your reply.
I didn't think of logging into the facebook website to disable anything. I'll give that a try.
In the meantime I've fiddled about with the accounts in 'Accounts and Sync'. I've tried deleting both the Facebook and Facebook for HTC Sense accounts.
After deleting both I went into the Facebook app and signed in, which recreates the account in Accounts and Sync. I set the sync options in the app to not sync any contacts. I waited around for a while and no extra contacts (from Facebook) appeared in my Phone list.
I then went into the Facebook app and changed the sync settings to 'sync with existing contacts' - which I assumed should only sync the data for the people currently in my phone book? Anyway after a few minutes I checked an all of my Facebook friends were now in my Phone list AGAIN
I started from fresh again and tried a similar thing with the other Facebook for HTC Sense account - I had to recreate this in the Accounts and Sync settings screen.
Again after a few minutes all my Facebook friends where there on my Phone list
Maybe this functionality isn't available with this phone / app?
Anyone else have any ideas?
It is a google problem, not a HTC problem.
The HTC app is doing what it should be doing. If you go to the people app, click on your contact (far left) and then menu -> view you can see the facebook option is unchecked.
However the Phone dialer (google product) just syncs everything.
There is a issue no for this, 10618 @
code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=10618&can=5&colspec=ID%20Type%20Status%20Owner%20Summary%20Stars
(unfortunately I can't post links as I am a newbie!!)
Best thing to do is you guys reply and make this defect more and more noticeable.
I've posted on the google issue site, cheers for the link!

[q] question about acct syncing

I just switched from an X to the Dinc and I have a questions about the account syncing. In the notifications bar it shows the syncing icon all the time. It never did that on my X. I have all the settings for facebook and twitter etc set to auto sync like normal. even if I manually cancel the sync, it'll start back up in a couple minutes. Any help would be great. Thanks.

[Q] Sync on Warm Z 2.2 slows phone to a crawl

Whenever a background sync is going on on this ROM for me, the phone slows down incredibly. Especially when trying to view messages, it gets so slow loading the threads that it is unbearable. Any ideas of a cause and a way to fix?
Edit: The messages are slow still whenever it is not syncing too
I turned off (not remove account) HTC sense, Facebook, News, Stocks, Yahoo, and Twitter and if I have to use any of them I have it set to sync when I open the app.
I have Facebook for HTC Sense, Weather and Google set to sync, and those are configured to run once a day.
If I'm gonna leave my phone to be charged, usually I will reboot it. When it turns back on it'll sync, but since its charging I don't care cause I wont be using it. When its done charging its usually done syncing so I don't have to deal with it

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately a lot of things were running slow for me for some reason, and I like to have everything sync for me. I think I'll just stick to CM7 though I love the features and look of this ROM.

[Q] Facebook sync problems

Once your phone syncs with facebook, it will never update your phone side contacts with any new facebook Contacts
Does anyone know how to fix this?
The only way I know of is to delete the sync and start over again. but it takes so long to join all the contacts.
Im talking about the integrated facebook, bc i like how you can see their status on dial.
