[Q] Swype says my EVO is not an Android - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Been using Swype since before the beta closed (July?). I had my EVO replaced in September, but I was able to install Swype on the new phone without any problem. And it has been working fine.
I rooted my stock 2.2, and Swype continued to work just fine.
This past Sunday, Swype would open but not "swype" (I could still type like normal). So I force closed it and restarted, rebooted, switched keyboards and back, etc. Nothing I tried would get it to work.
Finally, I un-installed it. Now it won't re-download it. I get an error message telling me that my device is not an Android phone. That's news to me (and I'm sure to Sprint, HTC, and Google).
I also un-installed the installer, but continue to get the same message.
Swypes web site says I can un-register my phone and re-register it, but only one time. I don't want to do this if I can avoid it because then I will be screwed if this happens again. Plus, like I said, it was running fine till this past Sunday.
I wrote to them asking for help but still have not heard back. Anyone have any other suggestions?

It probably expired. Unfortunately we are not allowed anymore to distribute the Swype apk so you are going to have to wait until Swype releases the real version, or find the apk on your own. Your not even supposed to have Swype on your phone so emailing them wont do anything.

Thats odd because I redownload swype all the time everytime I flash a new rom. I dont back up my apps . So you are saying you are logging on to the Swype Beta site and it wont let you redownload a new installer?

Did u have your phone on WiFi along with being logged in on Swype.com on the same wireless network? I had that problem the other day, and I just turned off WiFi on my phone and I was able to re-download the installer.

I believe you are incorrect. As I said, I AM in the beta program. I am supposed to have it on my phone.
As to the other replys, the Swype site is telling me that my HTC EVO with rooted STOCK 2.2 IS NOT AN ANDROID PHONE!!!
WiFi or no WiFi, it wont let me download the installer!!!
If I don't hear from them by tomorrow I guess I'll use my one opportunity to change the registered phone.

Titainium Back saved the day!
Guess I'm old and slow, but I just remembered one reason why I rooted was to install T.B.
It let me restore Swype and I'm back in business!
Of course, I have no idea why it stopped working in the first place, so it could happen again. Also, I have no idea why my phone isn't an Android!

ultra keyboard is a good alternative too if you ever needed one

Had the same issue. FAQ on Swype's website says it could be a problem with your browser on your phone, either in desktop mode or not using stock internet client.
I was actually using stock internet, but on ICS 4.03. So I changed my default browser to XScope and was able to download the installer.

Weird Market Problems on Desire

Just got my HTC Desire today and everything is working fine apart from the android market. I have 3 problems:
1) I don't have the paid apps tab only top free and just in. I can see paid apps within the just in section, but not top paid apps.
2) When I clock on the install button I get a blank screen with just the background gui showing for at least 10-20 seconds before the confirmation screen that shows what permissions the app needs is finally shown.
3) Apps install correctly however they never get removed from the "currently downloading" list in the Downloads section of the android market.
I got the phone through virgin mobile and I am currently using a t-mobile sim in it. I have tried doing a factory reset which didn't solve the problem.
Anyone had any similar issues?
Liam
Please search before posting.
Your problems will be solved by removing t-mobile content lock. It can be done through their website or by calling customer service.
One problem will remain though: so far no one can see copy-protected apps because market is not recognizing our build number. It should be solved soon though.
Hi,
The phone actually came from Virgin Mobile, but for the moment I am using my old T-Mobile sim which used to be in my G1 which didn't have any problems with the market. I seem to remember de-activating the content lock when I used the browser for the first time on my g1.
I just checked on my t-mobile account details and I definitely have the content lock turned off.
I still have the same problem with the market, i.e. I get about 20 seconds of blank screen after clicking install before the permission confirmation details come up.
And after an app is installed it still shows in the download section as installing with the grey progress bar and doesn't disappear unless I go to the settings/Applications and clear the cache in download manager, market and force close the market app.
Anyone have any similar problems? I have done a full factory reset three times, still the same problems.
Liam
I just got mine, its a open one unbranded. I can neither connect to gtalk or download apps, both hang. I have read similar problems for the Droid, but the fixes dont work for me.
Also can you connect the device to the internet via the PC, like windows mobile ?
That's odd. My problems were solved by removing content lock.
Does the same thing happen on WiFi? Did you try to restart the device?
Regarding PC to phone tethering, it's not possible over USB. There are guides on how to do it over WiFi though.
Its the same for me : confirmed that content lock is off.
and still have this problem.
On Tmobile, upgraded from G1, same sim.
I get this on wifi or not.
If I restart the device, the Market Place states its installed correctly (like it should do). But installing another shows the same problem.
I've done a Factory Reset via the menu and that did solve it.
And I've just phoned tmo tech support, and they recommend resetting via fastboot.
I'll give that a go later, and post back the results.
Any other ideas?
Its really weird. Yesterday at a different wifi location it worked fine. But again its not working in work. I assume then the downloads are being blocked by the service provider, or the router.
Thats really crap you cannot connect to the internet via the USB cable like in windows mobile. I cant get my data service working either - so in work I have to work.
ok, I did a clear storage from the fastboot menu, I assumed that what he meant, had no effect.
but figured it out!!!!!!
its my gmail/Google account thats the problem! if I reset the phone and created a new account it works fine. log back in as me, bang. back as previously created new account, fine.
1. is this the same for other people?
2. the people who are having this problem, are you all previous Android users?
3. if so, what phone? me was G1.
I will have to raise a bug with android or google on this.
I now also have to ring back tmo and tell them this info, as I'm guessing by his language he want to take the phone back in.

Beware that while most apps like gmail, calendar, contacts, etc work using port 80 (HTTP), both google talk and android market use different ports.
In my school network I can't connect to gtalk or download from market because they block those ports on the firewall.
I previously had a g1 and think the problems I was having had something to do with my gmail account but it seemed to resolve itself after several factory resets.
I am not convinced that the factory reset was what fixed it, I just think it needed a bit of time to sort itself out.
I wonder if having a new device with the same gmail account causes the issue and it takes a while to recognise the new device. though that doesn't really explain the behaviour I was seeing.

I cannot find a way around this.
My google account shows the slowness and install problems, a test/temp/dummy/other account does not, I do not want to change my email address!
So I have emailed Google, see where that gets me.
Anyone know/think-of any other routes?

I am having problems with the Market on my new Desire. I previously had a G1.
1. When I select Downloads tab, it takes about 10 seconds before the loading text is displayed.
2. When selecting something to install, the 1st info page with the install button is displayed but with no info/text/etc, ie only the install button, again about a 10sec wait and the info shows fine.
3. When selecting install, the security confirm page is displayed but is blank, no text or buttons, another 10secs and its displayed.
4. If I actually go to install an app, it correctly redirects me back to the last market list page. From there if I go to Downloads, after the 10sec wait, it always states "installing", even when its finished, and pushed a notification up.
I can use the app, but the market always states installing. Even hours after. These all queue up and never clear.
Only rebooting the phone clears the installing app, and correctly marks them as installed.
5. Uninstalling app cannot be completed at all. I select uninstall, and it pops up the confirmation box, but then displays a blank page, and after the 10 or so seconds, displays the "Uninstalling application" with progress bar, but never completes. Again only a reboot corrects this.
All this occurs for any app.
I have done many Factory Resets from software, and Clear Storage from Fastboot.
Interestingly, my phone works corrected with a new account, I reset the phone and instead of signing in with my usual account, I created a new one, this worked very fast and correctly. Signing back in with my normal account again showed the same problems.

same problem here, gone from a G1 to HTC desire not tryed to sign up with a new account simply becasue i had the xxxx.xxxgmail mail now for over 18 months and rely on it.
All I know is that the day after I got my Desire, probably about 24 hours after first turning it on (and after 4 factory resets which may have nothing to do with it) I was installing an app, which had the same problems i.e. delayed permissions screen, remaining in the download screen even after being installed succesfully, then a few minutes later I went to install another app and it was fine, no delay, suddenly I had the Top Paid apps tab and apps did not remain in the download section as still downloading. It has been fine ever since.
It seems that all of us who have this problem have had G1s previously so it must be something to do with that.
I experienced this issue with my new desire but not one with older rom. Both from T-Mobile. The funny thing was first day it was running pretty slow, could not view paid apps either but now it is much faster as it should be and paid apps have appeared too. So it's working brilliantly.
i have market problems too... i cant see many market apps, including paid apps which i bought..
it's a free desire with vodafone spain sim.

That's a different issue, apparently Google have not yet added the HTC Desires "fingerprint" to some kind of database that enables access to apps with copy protection, this is why some apps you have previously purchased won't show up.
Apparently this happens with all new handsets, though why Google don't get this resolved before the phones release I don't know, as it doesn't give a great experience to the end user (HTC say they sent the fingerprint well before the phone was released but google haven't processed it yet).
Hopefully this should be resolved soon. Until then I have had to extract a few of my more regularly used protected apps from my G1 with root.
But it happens to me with free apps too.

Any application developer can choose to use copy protection, some free apps choose to do that.

Android ID

So I got a touch Pro 2 today from work and running klinux on it just fine on first attempt, now my question is, Is there any way to "spoof" and android ID to the device to use the android market and certain apps that look for an ID?
I tried searching the thread before posting but couldnt come up with any results.
you need a gmail acct. thats what market uses. of course i had an android phone once and set everything up.. you should be able to do the same here considering its android os.

u need to create google gmail account. Im running any and every app. I even confirmed apps that need to be rooted works fine on this build with nothing extra to be done. I guess our version of Android OS is already rooted(same thing as Jailbrake or anything unlocking your phone) to run unapproved apps. a good one to look for is Barnacle Wifi Tether app on Marketplace.
Hmm thats odd I did create a gmail account when I did the initial setup can check my email but market still crashes on startup
That's a known bug with the sense build.
Hmm okay so I switched over to the aosp build and stikk have the same issue. Okay so I don't have this unlockdd and currently its not activated on my account, trying to run it over wifi. I'm noticing this one won't activate in a sense over wifi so I'm waiting for my unlock code and hopefully I can do it over edge on tmo. I thought this would work over wifi

[Q] Android Market Shutout on some games

Ok, ran into something haven't been able to figure out, so was hoping someone else has had and solved this issue, or knows how to.
I was browsing games on my laptop in Android Market, found Frontline Commando, thought I would go to phone, find it download it, cause since I rooted it, it wont go from laptop to phone in market....but when I tried searching for Frontline Commando, it wont even bring it up on my HTC EVO 4G, (it is running TMartinPPCEvoGingerSence v0.1) which I thought was close to stock...
So what it the market reading on my phone since it is set for all app, and locked in settings, that will not let some games show up??
I'm pretty sure its not cause ur rooted but because certain games are meant to run on certain phones with different higher specs.
I think its more about the rom developer and what kinda of setting in the rom. The game works fine on my phone.
Roman
Thats what I was hoping for help on, to maybe go in and rework some of the programming in root, I tried it on my wifes stock EVO and it works fine, but she isn't going to let me play games on her phone, ha, the nerve...
You might wanna try to change the LCD density level.
Roman
Ahhh yes, I did tweak with that after buying ROM toolbox....will give it a shot.
still the same, when go into Market, it says no match for frontline commando, even tho I put it on wifes phone, but couldn't get it to transfer to mine. put LCD to 217, rebooted, unblocked add blocker, quick rebooted, still no go...
for some reason phone will not lock at "show all apps" on market settings either....

I had this happen to me a couple of days ago... The fix I was told about, and worked, was to clear all the market cache and then re-start.
It solved my problems. Also, my phone WILL transfer from online Market to phone. You just HAVE to be logged onto Gtalk on your phone at the same time.
Good luck

Market opens webpage not app?

I am updating my old HTC Incredible to give to a friend who demolished their smart phone and cant updated right now.
I have it currently at 4.08.605.15 ... seems okay.
But when I hit Market, it loads a web page to Google Play rather than opening up the market app...
Not quite sure what is going on.
Note that I currently have the phone on wifi only.. no VZW service...but I don't think that should matter.
UPDATE...
Just finished posting this... and I look at the phone and the New Market (google play) Icon is now there... strange...

Play Store (aka Market) will update itself if you give it half a chance and a data connection, so the change of icon is not surprising. Is it working now?
Yep.... was a bit confusing since I thought the apps had not loaded properly. Guess I never gave it a chance to update until I set it down to post.
Just put the phone through the various apps it comes with... works great... haven't picked it up for sometime since replaced it with my Rezound.
Recall it being the best phone I'd had up to that time.

I am having the same problem. No data connection, just "WIFI". When you said data, is this the only way the play store will update? I just flashed Touch of blue V:2.2 Not trying to hijack but keep the threads together since they are the same issue.
EDIT: I figured it out! After resetting the phone a couple times it worked. You have to be quick and click on the market while looking for the "accept" button to appear. It will only be there for 1 second and if it's not hit in time you will be redirected to the google play website. Hope this might help someone else.

com.google.process.gapps has stopped

Yes , here it is again but now on the G3 (Verizon). I have done all the many suggested things after googling this message yet it still happens (not always) but pretty regularly at boot up. Anyone else seeing this on their G3?
already done:
rest apps preferences
re-enabled download manager
uninstalled new beta Google play store and reinstalled the stock one
uninstalled swiftkey (just in case)
maybe a few other odds and ends I forgot just now.
Noticed after I installed google keyboard.
I uninstalled it and it works fine. Proper load. I hate this lg keyboard. Come on paranoid android roms
Yeah, I have that google keyboard as well for the new L skin. I wonder why keyboards have this effect. I remember the swiftkey on did this for a while on the G2. Well as long as I know that is causing it I might be able to live with it for now. It's just not knowing which was getting to me.
