[Q] HTC Desire 2.2 (froyo) stock root? - Desire General

Hi!
I am total new to android, I got my HTC Desire for 2weeks now, I search the internet and on this forums and it seems to be nice to root my desire, now im a bit scared to do it, what can go wrong? Can I lost data? do I need to backup first? after I "rooted" my desire i still have the stock android 2.2 on it? (and with all my settings, messages and contacts)? my desire is an unbranded device. I heard that unrevoked 3.2 can root my device? what are the requirements for this? if I go to system information on my desire it shows that i have kernel version: 2.6.32.15-g6a358a9. So can I root my device? Do I still have warranty if I root? I got my desire for two weeks now so I don't want to brick my phone. I got a PC with windows 7 x64 and a laptop with windows 7 x32 and Ubuntu dualboot.
Can someone help me what I need to do?
(sorry for my bad English I am from Belgium)
Thanks in advance!

What software version are you on (same screen as the kernel version)? You want to make sure you can get an RUU file incase you ever need to go back to stock.
Rooting in itself won't wipe data. You will if you change ROM, though. Why do you want to root?

I took a picture so you can see all that stuff.. what you mean with i can get a RUU file? I want to root because then I can use apps2sd because i almost get always an notification that the phones memory is almost full :s so i need to remove other apps to install an other sometimes. And maybe some theme stuff but im not sure, because you need a custom rom for that right? or you think its not worth to root my desire? are there performance improvements? with stock or rooted ?
Thanks for the fast reply!

[Q] Black Screen of death

i found the solution here "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=748498"
but its for the one who downgraded their phone. in my case, i got the black screen after installing a RUU ROM. How should i fix my Desire?
if i should use that instruction, what should i do before doing it? Downgrade without display?.. kinda messed up.
Downgrade using the 0.92 to 0.80 method. Then use this to fix the screen: http://bit.ly/dyVmpm
which method. im kinda confused because in your post you said the method wouldnt work. Does that means i have to downgrade my phone without display? is that possible?
i mean which method of downgrading?
Perform steps 1-6: http://www.tolxdorff.net/projects/android/downgrade.php?step=2
Then perform steps from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=748498
All is done without the LCD working. You should wait about 30 mins for both files to flash.
thanks for replying. Does that mean i need to downgrade it without display?
if that so. How should i know if im choosing "yes" or "No".. on step 3.4
You only do step 1.1-6.
wait wait. 1.1 to 6/1.1 until 1.6 /1.1 until 6.... please. Thanks for helping me, but im kinda confuse.
Do the steps in the red rectangle

You just need to follow step 1, parts 1 to 6. You will not be able to see anything while doing it.
Once you have done this, your phone will have stock unbranded 2.1 with hboot 0.80. You must remove the PB99IMG.zip file before trying to upgrade using update.zip, as otherwise the phone will just try to run the downgrade again.
now its clear. i got two desire here. one is my sisters. at the step 4 is simlock right? if it is. How many minutes should i wait?
After part 4 of step 1 you will have to wait a while for the downgrade to complete. Give it 30 minutes to be safe. Remember that you still won't have a display at this point, but you will now be able to fix the problem with the FroYo update.
was very evry confused. i hope someone create a video about this one using infected phone.

[Q] Restoring/Unrooting back to 2.1 Stock.

Hi.
I'm selling my Desire so I need to restore it back to stock 2.1.
I followed this guide and when I clicked "upgrade" it came back with error "[155]: Unknown Error"
My phone is unbranded, bought sim free. It is running a custom 2.2 rom at the moment. Bootloader is 0.75.
Could someone advise on how I would go about doing this?
Thanks.
this guide help me to restore my phone
Did you read what I wrote?
I said I followed that and after running the HTC RUU and following the steps I eventually get an error and it doesn't go any further.
Which RUU are you trying to flash with?
The one that was linked to in the guide. "Unroot-RUU-Disire-1.15.405.4"
Ok, I wouldn't bother with that. Try this RUU instead:
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...1.00.32U_4.08.00.09_release_137222_signed.exe
Since your phone is unbranded you won't need a goldcard.
Hi,
I tired that and I'm still getting the same error.

Thanks.
Are you on Windows 7 64bit? That causes problems with running RUUs for a lot of people.
That RUU itself should otherwise work fine.
Yes, I'm running Windows 7 x64. =/
Is there anyway of getting around this issue? Withouth installing another OS of course.
Thanks.
Yeah. If you have an AMOLED screen you can flash another way.
Download this file:
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.zip
Rename it to PB99IMG.zip (ensure the extension is not .zip.zip) and put it at the top level of your sdcard. Start the phone up in hboot mode (vol down + power), wait for it to find the file and then say yes to the flash prompt.
Don't do this on an SLCD phone or it'll break the display.
i have unrooted many times using w7 x64. i just follow the guide with wwe
Thanks I'll give that a shot!
How can I tell which screen I have? I got my Desire back in April if that's any help.
Thanks again.
Anything before July is always an AMOLED screen, so you're ok.
As long as you didn't upgrade to stock froyo that file should flash the phone fine as it doesn't require any communication with a computer.
Much love. <3
Worked a treat.
Now running 2.1-update1. I'll leave that as it is so the buyer can choose to upgrade to OTA 2.2 or root it.
Thanks again <3

Desire Z perma rooted - how to unroot?

Hello,
I have a HTC Desire Z with perma root, S-off and Clockwork recovery, however I'd like to update to the latest official rom of Gingerbread. I assume to do this that I have to remove my root, S-off and recovery, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me how?
I read that I'm not supposed to flash certain files with S-off or I'll get a bootloop, so could somebody advise me what to do?
This is my specs:

You've posted in the wrong forum - you need to post in Questions, ideally.
Just installing the official update via RUU (there are guides, search the forum) will put your phone back to stock - but you won't be able to undo the changes without a LOT of work. Why do you even want to do it?
You'd be better finding a modified and rooted version of the latest stock f/w, surely?
Sorry, I Wasn't paying attention to what forum I posted it in.
Could you recommend me a rom that's closest to the latest stock as possible?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=837042
This is the most stock you can get with a sense ROM
Thanks, one final question.
Do I need Clockwork Recovery 3.x? I'm on 2.6.x right now and I know that in 3.x they needed new partitions, I assume I'll need to update?

Latest is 5.0.2 but you can just install it through rom manager. to be able to flash GB roms you'll need a recovery higher as 3.x though since this is the one that can change partitions to ext4
just wondering, do you want it stock for the rom or for warranty purposes?
The reason I wanted stock was because I never use root and I didn't want to mess up my phone.
One final final question:
Will my 2.2 Nandroid dumps work on recovery 5.*?

You [and all cdma variants (like me even)] will have to wait for kernel development as alquez states in his OP of that thread.
or
Restore your nandroid backup of stock (easiest fix).

Rob

Hope it comes soon...I forgot to make a backup before i went to cm7....however I do have a second Wildfire S thats rooted but for some reason i cant get into recovery to back up that ROM....it gets stuck on the white HTC screen....any ideas?
ideas
Can you boot to hboot [on second phone]? If not you are either semi-bricked or bricked. Still assuming you cannot get into hboot, go download the htc sync drivers, set up your environment [Google has a guide that walks you through it], then with the phone connected to your computer [and on] type "adb devices" If you get a return that looks like a short serial, it can be fixed... If no devices found... well, it will take someone smarter than me If you can boot to hboot, it can be fixed no problemo... Hit me back with results [via pm] I can't follow every thread I respond to.
Regards,
Rob
PS it sounds like the 2nd phone has had either a bad recovery or wrong boot.img flashed to it w/o knowing more

How does one downgrade the firmware?

I have the Indian HTC one X rooted with 1.28.720.10 and can't find the RUU anywhere.
I've been facing a lot of problems with it - including the disk space mysteriously vanishing, (20 gigs gone in my case) and so I want to revert it to a stock unrooted state before returning it for a replacement.
Already seen this thread for the AT&T version, and the sdcard does not have a mmcblk0p23 as stated.
I have the RUU for an older version(1.26.720.2) from the RUU thread so I want to downgrade the firmware to that one.
Anyone tried a variation of the AT&T method? Or is there another way to downgrade the firmware...or am I SOL?

wrong place to ask for. for all type of question there is a veeery big Q&A thread qo and ask there
You can't downgrade the firmware once updated the hboot and radio. You'll have to wait till s- off is achieved for that. What you can do is flash a stock rom (1.26), flash stock recovery, re lock bootloader (in order) and then flash the 1.28, subsequently 1.29.x firmware update ruu. If you want to get rid of the sd space issue, why not flash one of the many 1.29.x and 2.x based roms on the forum?
Wrong section btw. Anyway, best of luck!
Thank me if I helped.... You know I'll do it again Oh, and by the way, Sent from my HTC One X
Yeah, you can't flash an RUU that would take the hboot to a previous version. A few Chinese sites mention the 1.28.720.10 RUU, but I can't translate from my phone.
As said, just install ARHD 7.1 or whatever if you're already unlocked.
