[Q] DInc 3g mobile hotspot question - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I just upgraded from eris (2.2.1 KaosFroyo) to Droid Incredible. I am not sure if this has been talked about on this end of the forum or not, I did look but could not find anything. When I open the 3g mobile hotspot app that came stock with the unit, it states "You need the 3g mobile Hotspot feature from Verizon Wireless in order to use this service." When I hit ok, it appears to have shared my internet access. I have not added this service through verizon, am I going to be charged and is there a way around it?
Thanks in advance for any guidance with this. I look forward to being on this forum now.

You have to agree to pay like $25 a month... It will appear to work but when you try to use it it'll only show pricing for it.

Ok, thanks.

There is a work around for it. 1st choice it to ROOT your Incredible and then download wireless tether. No charge.
Second is to follow the below steps:
1) Dial ##778, SEND
2) EPST dialog comes up. Select 'Edit Mode'. Enter SPC (000000), hit OK.
3) Scroll to down to 'Security', select it. Change 'S.IP DUN User name' to [email protected] (from [email protected])
4) Hit back arrow to go back and go/select 'M.IP Default Profile'. Change 'DUN NAI' to [email protected] (from [email protected])
5) Hit menu button, and 'Commit Modifications', phone will save changes and reboot.
This allows you to "by pass" the pay for service screen from VZW and you can access the wireless hotspot. I tried it before I rooted and it worked but it seemed slow to me.

This is the method I use.....
I am rooted and have used both the wireless tether app in the market, as well as the built in from Verizon (which I prefer because of wpa encryption)....
In my day to day surfing....no actual testing... the verizon one works faster. At least on pulling up graphics intensive sites like cnn.
I'd be interested in knowing if there is a work around like this on the Droid 2 as that is what my friend has and the menu doesn't exist on that. (I tried)

Thank you for the info. Is there a way for VZW to figure that out and has anyone heard that happening?

If you data usage changes significantly, you take a chance in getting caught. I wanted mine active so my wife could use her laptop in the car. As long as you are not using it as your primary internet source I think you'll be fine.

I use mine periodically and have never been charged and i have never read of anyone being charged. People have been doing this for around 7 years and verizon just doesnt care enough to stop it...Yet.

I'd just like to point out that the newest version of wifi tether (found here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/ ) supports WPA2 encryption as well as AP mode instead of ad-hoc

I'm not 100% sure but someone said once that all phones may have the option menu its just under different numbers such as ##program or ##help or something like that but I've never tested it just remember someone's theory

Why bother modifying this (something possibly patchable) when an easy download of the wireless tether app is just as good?

Anyone know where to get the 3g mobile hotspot app? I noticed that skyraider removed the one from Verizon.

There is no modifying or patching of the app. All you do is change the username the DUN uses. It is set to allow Verison to know you are tethering. If you change it to your standard username (the one the internet browser, mail, and all the other apps use) then Verison does not know you are tethering. All they know is you are logged into the nework and using a data connection. No worry of being caught unless you are dumb enough to use your phone as your primary internet connection and use it everyday. The average user will spike here and there with normal internet use and this is what Verison will also see.

Is changing the s.ip dun user name needed?? I never changed mine and haven't had an issue... Would changing it make it harder to find out I'm doing this??

If you are rooted using wifi tether, there is no need to do this. It is a hack for non rooted users.
The only way VZW will find out is if you are using an obscene amount of data.

No comparison
The 3g from verizon is hands down faster. D1.71 U.66 on Hotspot vs D.43 U.33 on wifi tether.

Chome weather won't update!

I make sure I've got data connected by testing on Google maps and ie, so I know the connection is present. When I goto "Weather Update", it looks to stall at 10%. I set it to "y" for connect to GPRS first. I have re-installed Chome weather and rebooted still no luck. BTW I'm running v 1.9d.

Change the "Y" to an "N" for 'Connect to GPRS first'. Try to update after that. If it doesn't work, then reboot and try to update again.
R U going through a proxy. (ie: using the 5.99 t-zones hack?) i've heard that using the proxy can cause issues with the update. The other thing is, if you are not using a proxy and are using the 19.99 tmobile plan, make sure under gprs settings and whatever you have your data connection named, that it's set to access "the internet"

I am using the 5.99 proxy. Will updates work using this method? if so, how.
I'm going to look into this, but i believe i may have to add a line that specifies the proxy in he weather script.
I think I got it working. Previously, to get the 5.99 to work, I ran "tmotzones.cab" which input the settings for the proxy to work. I think that was my problem...now I removed that app and manually input the proxy settings, so now it looks good. Thanks for the replies.
i have the proxy manually input and it still doesn't update no matter what i do and i've done it all. The only time i can get it to update is via wifi. I can't even get it to work via usb sync only thru wifi. I have the starting 10% and when i press update it says no internet connection? but i have one and the proxy works on ie, live search, etc. any ideas?
try going to www.yahoo.com in IE and see if that works. Let me know if it does or not.
Update seems to be working, but now it looks like the pretty icon has turned to a large red "X".

Glad you got some answers.
I guess I'm still to new to the site.
I am using 5.99 plan, when i insert give me 10% update, when i insert (Y) uppercase worked. 100% . try and post.
Good observation. Works over data for me too when I capitalize the Y.
Thanks for the catch guys, I updated the script to detect that now I never had to use that options myself, since I'm on an "always on" connection. I just made that option available for guys like you, but never had a chance to really test it out on my own

4G Tethering over WiFi Speed Issues?

Today, I finally tried a proxy server as part of my tethering testing and it seems to have finally unlocked the 4G tether speeds over WiFi. It's certainly not a perfect solution for all situations, but I thought I'd put something here in the general section where some Sense users would be more likely to run across it.
Could someone try this under Sense with 4G over WiFi and let me know if it improves your speeds? I went from being stuck at 0.4Mbps to getting the usual 4G speeds I normally see (anywhere from 2.2Mbps to 10Mbps)!
What you'll need to do is install filterproxy from the Android market (it's free). This will start a proxy server on your EVO. I believe the intended purpose of filterproxy is to block certain sites from your browser on your phone, but only if you browse using the proxy. filterproxy has a side effect allowing the phone to act as a proxy server for other devices that connect to it.
Once you've installed filterproxy, start tethering and connect your computer to the tether. Configure your browser's proxy settings to use your phone as a proxy. The method for changing your browser's proxy settings varies from browser to browser, but here are a few.
Internet Explorer 8:
Click on Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections tab -> LAN settings
Check the box for Use a proxy server and enter the appropriate settings
Firefox:
Tools -> Options -> Network tab -> Settings
Select Manual proxy configuration and enter the address and port in the HTTP Proxy section
Check the box for Use this proxy server for all protocols
Chrome:
Click on the Customize tool icon in the upper right of Chrome and select Options from the menu
Click Under the Hood on the left
Click Change proxy settings
Click LAN settings
Check the box for Use a proxy server and enter the appropriate settings
For the proxy address, you'll need to enter the IP address that your phone is using for its WiFi access point. In CM7 this should be 192.168.43.1. For Android Wireless Tether it can be changed, but by default it is 192.168.2.1 (I think). If you can't find it, open adb shell or terminal emulator and type 'netcfg'. At the bottom you should see something like this:
wl0.1 UP 192.168.43.1 255.255.255.0 0x00001043
The 192.168.43.1 is the address being used for the WiFi access point. The port for your proxy is the port that filterproxy is using. By default it is 8000, but you can change it within the filterproxy app.
NOTE: changing your proxy server settings may prevent your browser from connecting to the Internet whenever you're not tethering. You'll have to check or uncheck proxy boxes or try making different shortcuts like this.

hey very curious here about this...i get crap speeds when tethering my internet on 4G....like really crappy...i use wireless tether and easytether pro for wired share...i downloaded the app filter proxy...how do i work it ? i am completely confused as to how to set it up etc...if you could help me there i could help test this out...ty
edit: just to let u know ur awesome !!! i live in a 4G area but never got the speeds my phone did while tethering...using ur method i get watever 4G is putting out now...its awesome...anywhere from 3MB to 9MB down speeds...fantastic !!!!!
First off I just want to say, Dees_Troy, you are a freaking Champion! I've been looking around too long for this answer to my prayer! I tried it out your workaround and it worked immediately and it was way too easy! I'm using an Evo 4G and I'm on Fresh 3.5.0.1 (Sense Rom). My speeds were ~.5 MBPS. I just did a speed test (on my pc, not phone) and hit ~3MBPS and now I am streaming and surfing like a crazy person. Thank you so much for posting this workaround!
Tethering worked fine for me...Pretty cool but needs to be faster ha!
I'm running 2.2 on my Evo 4G and this is what i got after doing this:
Before the fix via Speedtest.net:
DL: 66.1
UL: 117.8
After the fix:
DL: 323.9
UL: 85.6
Wrong thread.
Thanked you though for your contribution.
Cool Stuff
Hey this is great to know, I don't have 4g service in my area yet but it did seem to increase my tethering speed regardless. Also learned a little something about proxy settings

Well first go into the safari browser options/tools, then look for lan settings to start with.

Nice thread...makes much more sense to me. i have 1 question...item #3 states, "open up terminal emulator..." I have no idea what that means...sorry.
Also, I understand (in theory about the rooting and bricking dangers of rooting a phone, and I am not sure I should do that...due to my obvious lack of skill. It seems like this does not require rooting your phone, or does it?
Thanks for your help (and patience).

Yes and no....to use filterproxy you don't need to be rooted. But you need to be rooted to use terminal emulator [app with root] along with wireless tether [tether without paying the sprint 30$/mo]
If you paid the fee, then you could bypass step 3. Rooting isn't hard if you use unrevoked. I can walk you through it, the whole process takes about 5 minutes, and you can unroot if you ever had to take your phone in for servicing.
Thanks. My only concern is not understanding what I did to my phone and not being able to restore it if needed. You make is sound simple.
I guess what I need is the dummy's guide to how to get free wi-fi, with minimal risks. Is that possible?
Thanks again.

Sure thing. Shoot me a pm, so as we don't bloat this thread. I'd get you rooted and all set up with minimal risks and walk you through it.
when i open up terminal emulator and type in netcfg, it gives me a permission denied error. i've never used this program before, so it's probably something really simple but not sure. i have an evo, rooted, no custom roms. thanks

Try typing su before you type netcfg.... example: su netcfg
su means sudouser in linux language
type is su first, now it gives me SU: Permission Denied. like i said im not familar with this at all or linux, but when i type in the SU NETCFG it gives it in all caps. is that the problem? it wont let me type lower case. any other suggestions? Thanks for the help.
edit: my first line when i open up emulator is
$ export PATH=/data/local/bin:$PATH
$
im uninstalling and reinstalling the proxy and emulator now just to try if that makes a difference. plus im a new member so need to wait 5 minutes between posts and edits so its a pain, lol.

How do I put a VPN shortcut on my 'home' screen?

Hi,
I am currently using a VPN to get into my network & Then accessing my data that way. However to get to it in Gingerbread, I have to hit menu, then settings, then wireless, then scroll down to VPN, then click on my VPN, then put my password in & hit connect.
It would help a lot to be able to just click on my VPN link on the 'home' screen. I cant figure out how to get the shortcut there.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Rich
I just tried and you add a shortcut to your home screen, just as you add a widget.
I dont see anything related to a VPN within the shortcut menu or widgets. Any ideas on how to do a shortcut for the VPN?
Tried anycut from the market?
Sent from an Epic in the sky.
Thanks, Anycut might do the trick, of course there is no VPN listed. Is there a way to determine what processes are running in Android? If i could find the VPN process, I could probably get it going.
I believe you can achieve this with Tasker. I know its a paid app but its an option.
As a side note, how did you manage to get tour vpn to work? Are you using ddwrt by chance? Since getting this phone I could no longer vpn over sprints network due to firewall issues. From what I found online if you ask sprint for a static IP it fixes the problem but they charge you a monthly fee. It used to work fine on my old HTC hero.

We use L2TP/IPSEC PSK at work though Sonicwall, and it works great.
I don't have a static IP on my account. Works fine from 3g or my home WiFi.

I am using a Zyxel firewall & L2TP also. It works fine but... sprints lousy service seems to stall out, requiring me to re login to the VPN. Yesterday with 1 bar, I was logged into the VPN but there was not enough 3g to actually use any data, but enough to stay logged in for 2 hours & not get any emails.
It works fine & I suspect if i had better 3g (or verizon) it would work OK.
I was using DDWRT & OpenVPN with CM7 on my Evo 4g & it worked but I switched to a new router.
Yeah, missing emails is never good.
We don't have an Exchange server at work (not cost effective enough to make it work properly across 10 locations), so I'm able to access my email with K9 via IMAP or POP3.
It's strange that it worked with one Sprint phone, but not reliably with another. Has data service had a general decline in your area?

You should try vpn show. You can find it in google play.
Check the "Launch VPN" app on Google Play
Sorry to revive an old thread. I was looking for this as well and found a way. Just adding if anyone searches for this sort of thing.
Add a shortcut to home screen, select settings, then look for VPN.
This works in my HTC ONE on 4.2.2
I use NFC Task Launcher on my Samsung Galaxy S4.
The following could be a little bit different depending on your phone's make and model and rom type. I did the following.
WARNING: I am not responsible for any damage made to your phone or anybody or anything else during the reading or by following the acts of this tutorial in any way possible.
Click to collapse
Open up NFC Task Launcher and go through the tutorial.
- In the end you can create you own task.
- When you create a new task just click for NFC.
If you have NFC Disabled, just leave it like that and when it'll ask you if you want to enable it, press cancel. (TIP; if the top bar overlay is bugging with more information, just tap on one of the buttons after explanation to have it's focus come back to the window.)
- Name the task 'VPN' or something.
- Click on the cross (✚) in the right top corner to add an action
- Search for 'Applications & Shortcuts' and select 'Open Activity', then click next at the bottom.
- The application list will load up. Select 'Settings' as an application and the activities list will be updated.
- Choose; 'com.android.settings.Settings$VpnSettingsActivity' and select 'Add to Task' at the bottom.
- Then press the arrow to the right '→' in the top right corner.
- It will say you need to place a tag underneath it. DON'T DO THAT, AS IT WILL OVERWRITE THE TAG. (I hope you still have NFC OFF!)
- Just press the tick mark (✓)
- Now you have at least 1 task in the 'My Tasks' list.
Now, to add this to you're homescreen, do the following;
- Go to your homescreen.
- Add a widget like you would normally do. The name of the widget is 'Run Task', so look for the 'R'.
- There are 3 options there, background color (I personally like the black BG), select Icon (I've chosen the gear icon since its a setting) and select task. In 'Select Task' choose for the VPN task you've made and press 'Done'.
- Now press the task on the homescreen, and it'll open up the VPN list (at least on SGS4 it does).
- Connect to your VPN as you would normally do.
You can even write this to an NFC, but that doesn't make sense, since all it does is open the VPN settings menu, not connecting to the VPN directly.
Sidenote; This app is also handy for making other tasks, such as tweeting your at work, check in at Foursquare, send your boss an email that you're in the office and turn off the sound of your phone all in one task, just by connecting to your works wifi connection or by taping an NFC task.
Now you can easily connect to your favorite VPN easily.

[Q] Page Plus Data?

While back I successfully flashed this phone to Page Plus, along with a verizon PRL and it works like a charm talk and text but I get no data or MMS. What should I do to get data? Is it as simple as getting a verizon APN or do I need to do some wacky stuff?

That depends on how comfortable you are with QPST or DFS and whether you have a budget you are willing to spend to get the phone up and running. There is another thread running in this forum attempting to get 3g on Pageplus flashing an NV file, but there seems to be a number of issues that are still being worked out. Besides that, I know of two options for getting data:
1. Simplest method (and now the only one I ever use because, heck, it's freakin easy) - get Wireless Workshop. You can fully flash phones over to $10/phone and it does all the work for you. It gets mms up and running, does some kind of dmu calculation to allow you to run data at 3g speeds, and it's almost entirely automatic. Downside: you pay $10/flash and you have to buy credit in $50 chunks.
2. QPST 2.7/ DFS method (I was able to get mms and 1g data running) - I can't help you to find QPST, but a google search will get you there quickly enough or you can go with DFS, which you can download for free from their website.
It's been a while since I've flashed my LGOG (I think it was in February or March), so here is hopefully everything you need. Also, if you already know all this, my apologies. Some people seem to be having issues with getting the values to stick and if that's you, then I don't know what to tell you apart from going for Wireless Workshop. But your post sounded like you might not be in that camp, so here goes:
*You have to be on stock based rom (I usually use Lifeless or NextOG, just because those are already on my phone, but any should work just fine)
*Make sure phone is in DIAG mode - Dial ##DIAG#, then enable or yes or DIAG or whatever the option is
*Open QPST/DFS, plug in phone, and open the port in the program that shows your phone.
*In DFS you want to send the SPC, click on the PROGRAMMING tab, then edit the DATA and MOBILE IP tabs
- Enter [email protected] (#########@vzw3g.com) for the UID and NAI (technically I think the NAI should be [email protected] or something like that, but I've never found it to affect my ability to get 1g of data)
- Enter vzw for the password and shared secret values
* I don't remember which profile (0, 1, or 2) you need have as default. I think I just filled in all three and set 0 to default and it worked, but you may have to dink about for a bit if it doesn't work.
* The settings are similar in QPST, but with more tabs within tabs to fill in all the information.
That ought to get you data, and then you just need to change the mms settings.
*Dial ##DATA#, find the option for mms, click on it and choose to edit, enter SPC, change the value to http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms, set the port and proxy to nothing (this part was tricky for my phone to get it to change - I ended up switching it to 80, restarting the phone, and then changing it to nothing)
- the phone will restart and you'll be all set. If you have trouble sending or receiving mms, you can also search for wwmsgs.apk or pageplusmms.apk (though I prefer wwmsgs.apk because it looks like the AOSP messaging app)
Hopefully that helps, and hopefully I haven't forgotten anything essential. If I have, I'll try to help you get it sorted out.
+1 for wireless workshop. I flashed 2 OG's and it couldn't have been easier. I get true 3g speeds (2+Mbs), and everything else works.

I gave it a go with DFS, it tells me error code 89 cannot establish a data connection. then it keeps bootlooping back to the boot animation until i disable data
Edit: when i reconnect to dfs some settings have returned to their sprint settings. argh. I wish WW would just let me pay the 10 bucks for one flash.

I've been trying to rack my brain for what I did to make the settings stick, but I can't seem to remember. At one point I got that message as well, but I think between using QPST and DFS the settings eventually stayed. You could try changing some of the values by dialing ##DATA# and editing them there. I did that a few times on my wife's phone and it seemed to work ok (though the mms settings were quirky).
I have two friends coming over to Page Plus, so I'll be reactivating my Wireless Workshop account for them. I was planning to do the $50 and do $10 per flash, but it seems like there are a number of people here who would like to make the switch to Page Plus and get data. If I can figure out a way to allow others to chip in, we could all go for the unlimited license and get everyone flashed over with full 3g. The unlimited is good for 1 month and costs $75. I already have $20 of that coming my way from my two friends, so we would just need 5 or 6 more people who are interested and a way to make it happen (perhaps using teamviewer to flash them wirelessly?). I would feel hesitant about giving out my username and password, since my address and payment info are all on the account. Plus I think they limit it to one computer. But if I get it on mine, I could connect via Teamviewer to anyone interested. The whole process takes about 10 minutes.
What do you/anyone else think?
I have some time coming up this weekend, so that would be ideal.

Just thought of a way we could do the money. Google Wallet just setup an easy way to send money to someone's Wallet account through gmail. That could be an option. We would have to keep the amount I received under $55, since I'll be getting $20 from my friends and Teamviewer is only free if it's for private use, not for commercial use. I would want to keep this at fellow LGOG users helping each other out.

Google Verification Bypass

I need help.
I work for a disaster response company.
Here is the dilemma
We have 8 of these devices.
LG G Pad X 10.1 Verizon LG-V930
They are all locked with the google verification and we can not get them to bypass it.
I have not tried to flash a new ROM, but and i dont even know if that will work.
I have seen a few different posts about getting rid of it, but some of the settings are missing and i can not finish that process.
I need help resetting these so that our drivers can use them again

Why not login to the original Google account? If there legitimately owned you should have no problem getting into them.

They are legitimately owned.
However the ones we are having issues with are employees that were terminated, or they were temp employeess, and they used their personal accounts on these devices. The ones that used the company email we can retrieve.
We have reached out to them but some are not willing to give us the information to help.

Ouch! Now I understand.
That's gonna be a tough one. Generally your gonna need there login info to get back into them. There are dodgy Ebay sellers that claim they can get passed it for certain models of phones. but honestly that's the only other way around that if it's even possible for those models.
Now if you have receipts for them Google might be able to do something if you get ahold of the right person.

Yeah, so since they are ATT models that seems to be the problem, The locked bootloader, and none of the work arounds i have seen or programs can do this one. Which i why i came here for some extra advice.

Only solution is to get ahold of the right person at Google. Maybe send a tweet out
Are they over a year old?

I don't know if you figured this out or if this would help but I think I can get you into the guest account on these devices.
First get a SD card with an apk on it. I downloaded one from apkpure. Then when the device asks you to connect to a wireless network, check the Show advanced options box. Then in the Proxy settings drop down box, select Manual. And click on the Proxy hostname box to bring up the keyboard, and press the settings button on the keyboard that looks like a gear. From the keyboard settings menu you can click the mulit-window button on the bottom taskbar and can open two windows. Open the file manager in one of the windows. In the file manager click on your SD card and try to install the apk you put on it. When it prompts you that you need to allow Unknown sources in the settings, click on the settings button to open the settings window. (Do not check the allow Unknown sources box if it allows it, if you check it, and the device resets or runs out of battery you'll have to go through this again, but when you click on the apk it won't prompt you to go to settings to allow unknown sources because they're already allowed.) Now just click on Users and switch to guest. There are some limitations to this mode, like not being able modify the wifi network (you'll have to switch back to the Owner account to change this).
I found a FRP bypass workaround if you are running 5.1.1 on a LG G Pad X 10.1 V930 AT&T model, not sure if all models are the same. It was FRP locked and all of the other bypass methods must have been patched. I was at the setup screen after a factory reset. I hope this helps.
1. Connect to wifi, then go back to start screen
2. Go to Accessibility > Vision > Enable Talkback
3. Go through the talkback training then draw an L to bring up the quick settings select Text to speech Settings (bottom right corner), afterwards you can disable Talkback by holding the power button and holding 2 fingers on the screen until it disables.
4. You will be in the settings app. Go to Users > Add user > User > Add user > Set up
5. You will be brought to a User setup screen select Next > It will pop up the wifi connection screen select next > You will be asked to sign into a Google account, sign into your Google account and proceed with the Google setup.
6. You will be brought to the homescreen. Go to settings > Users > And sign in as Owner.
7. Go to Settings > Factory data reset > Reset tablet. You can now factory reset and you will not be prompted to sign into a Google account.
