[Q] Internet browser downloading files as .bin - why? - Desire General

My Desire has developed a problem downloading from the internet.
I used to be able to download a PDF quite happily, but now it when I download a PDF it saves it as .bin the first time then -1.bin, then -2.bin etc.
I've checked with a desktop browser and the files download as thecorrectname.pdf.
Also Opera works fine.
Has anyone else had the problem and fixed it?
Desire is on T-Mobile UK - Froyo.
I have Astro file manager installed (has been for months), which I'm having to use to rename the file downloaded before I can open it.
I've tried Enable Browser Downloads in Astro (and disabling it)
I've also used Astro to Edit File Extensions and reset back to default ones.
It's still the same after restarting the phone.
As you can see I'm clutching at straws.

I guess it must be just me then.
I'll have to reset it then, see if that works.

It won't work
Mine is doing exacly the same. Reset does not help.
No remedy so far.

Thanks for letting me know
I don't know if it is related but it started happening after I installed a game boy emulator.
I've removed it since but still no joy.

Download your pron somewhere else?

[Q] MIUI 1.11 & ES File Manager

I'm running MIUI XJ XPART (latest 1.11). Anyone else experiencing the following problem (it's present for last few versions, but now it's really making me mad ): using ES file manager, setting custom FTP/LAN servers and views - everything OK for some time, then opening it it reverts to default settings (view and all my FTP servers gone? ).
Could it be MIUI too agressive with RAM management or something else?

if you are using FTP/LAN to transfer files from pc to mobile device via WiFi, why dont you use the built in File Explorer FTP server option? correct me if i have not understood your question.
You've understood me well
But there are some cases when I can't use it (ie firewall issues, not the same LAN etc)... and I'm curious to find out why is that happening.
ES is the only program I've encountered problems with, and it seems like a fresh install when it occurs. I've tried using Astro, but I don't like it

may be you can address it in "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19434249" along with the logcat which might have some info on the issue hopefully . i believe there is app available to get the log file.
below is the command to get the log using adb from command prompt by connecting your device to the pc. you should have android-sdk.
prompt> adb logcat > log1.txt

[Solved] Any way to access an apk file immediately after flashing?

I'm not sure if this is possible as ICS has no built in file manager, but is there anywhere I can put an apk file that it would be accessible without one? Specifically I want to be able to open an apk to install a file manager as the first thing I do after flashing a rom, to avoid needing to go through the market.
I thought maybe I could leave it in sdcard/download but it seems like the downloads program is blind to anything in that folder that wasn't officially "downloaded". (I suppose I could upload one to my dropbox and download it via the browser, if there are no viable options). Also made a few stabs at getting the gallery program to show one but it seems to filter out anything that's not a picture or video.
Any ideas for places to stick an apk and get one of the stock programs to let me open it?
maybe email it to yourself?
but you would have to log into the email app to do that
but there isnt really anyway to access the file without a file explorer
Open your favourite rom zip, add your apk to /system/app, save the zip, push that zip to the phone, flash.

Yeah in general I'm trying to cut out the step of signing into anything and just restoring my apps from a backup before I need to cancel automatic restore functions (which I do want on and running once I do my own initial run of things).

I'm guessing this comes with the consequence of raising any apk added in this manner to system app level? Not that I distrust the apps I'd have in mind for this to do anything malicious themselves, but is there any danger of opening security holes by elevating apps not designed to be system apps?
What I've done many times is just enabling Air Plane as soon as I can after flashing a ROM. That's way I can install any apk I want.
Hope it helps.

Hmm but then what is your method for getting to that apk? If you do it over wifi that seems to defeat the point, no?
Personally I've found that it works just fine to uncheck the boxes for recovery syncing during the setup process, and then just re-enabling them later in settings. (Alternately, not signing into my google account at all until I've performed a backup). That way even if I end up signing into the market to download a recovery app, it doesn't automatically try to re-download everything else on its own.
I'm starting to think that my dropbox solution will be the cleanest, as it'll be a simple step of opening the browser and downloading a single apk every time at the same link.
I bet that the inclusion of a basic file explorer will be one of those headline items in a future android release. A nice basic functionality that the bloggers can rehash to death before anything actually hits.
Download the file manager apk over wifi and install the APK via download manager.
I do it all the time with Chinese android tablets with no market access.
Or Bluetooth it from another device.
Or just use the market

Asus Transformer - Revolver OC/UV

Transfer by USB from my laptop.
Is there a way to do that in which the device will launch the apk you move over? When I copy files over usb, it only ever puts them into whatever directory, and I need a file explorer to interact with them on the phone. And then I'm back to square one, as far as this particular task is concerned (once things are up and running I just use the LAN option in ES file explorer and it's as convenient as could be).
you have the apk in your computer right?
connect the phone to pc, and use adb to install
'adb install <apk_file_name.apk>'
Ah. I haven't used adb since I first unlocked/rooted a few months ago. Guess it probably pays to be a little familiar with those tools; they don't even occur to me when problem solving these days.

mark thread as solved then, if that solved it
Well a completely in-phone solution would still be nice, but I guess if there were any of those they'd have come up by now.
I'll probably use abd if I'm actively working at my computer and a dropbox download otherwise.

Help with endless nested /0/0/0/0 folders

Hi. I just switched from 1 custom 4.3 rom to a different one and i did a factory reset. However once i rebooted, i noticed that all my internal SD content had gone into 0/0/0/0 etc. i kept clicking but eventually file explorer on widows just froze.
I went into ES file explorer on my phone and saw the content was behind 400 0's!!!!
Anyone have any idea what i could do to recover that info? every time i try copying the files ES explorer either crashes or says that it had copied the files when it hadnt.
Any help would be greatly apreciated. I'm at my wits end... :crying:
Thanks
Bro you need to use a file explorer from recovery. TWRP custom recovery has a built-in file explorer. That should do the trick

Also, you should update your recovery as the more recent versions have fixed that problem. It doesn't happen each time you flash with the new versions.

Yep I figured that out the hard way lol. Already upgraded to the latest version of CWM to prevent it from happening anymore. Now to get the files out from down there... :banghead:

On Windoz, You could troll and copy out every 10 deep or 20 deep back to surface and then continue. That'd be better than crashing Explorer.
Dos Prompt is more rugged. You could write a batch script there.

I saw that somewhere and tried that. Doesnt seem to be having any effect. Unless im doing it wrong...
I'm plugging my phone into my computer, accessing the phone section when it comes up, going about 20 0s deep and copying it back to the root. It either crashes my windows explorer, or doesnt seem to be doing anything(i think because its already disconnected itself. i tried making a new folder and it wouldn't let). what am i doing wrong?
PS. how would i access my phones internal SD from DOS?
thanks
Try ADB FileExplorer that should not time out on Windows. I have also tried Android File Manager with success. If that does not work, I will look up other options.
Well i tried android file manager. Im not 100% sure exactly how these programs work, but either way its saying i dont have root access. I do and i also have chainfires adbd insecure app which should give me full root access, but its still not working.
I looked at ADB FileExplorer too, but i didnt really get it and it kept saying it couldnt find my phone and something about an incorrect path.
With the Android File Manager, when it accesses the Phone over ADB, it will ask for Root once. If you don't click SuperSU warning in that time, the File Manager will give this error. Please read its thread carefully. I have connected over ADBWIRELESS and this just fine.

It never asked for root on my phone. I've tried all the changes and everything else that people have recommended, but im still not having any luck. I guess im too much of a noob for all this lol :crying:
Try Re-mounting internal SD in Recovery and then connect to PC.
nope, still no luck. Its still saying no root and no supersu request is coming up. I guess im missing something....
EDIT: I seem to somehow be "losing" root every time i try to connect to the android file manager. i open an app that requires root and it says i dont have root. I have to reboot my phone to get root to work again. It's weird though, because SuperSU opens fine...
open the last "zero" folder on your computer, drag everything into a folder on your computer desktop, let everything copy (do something else in the mean time), delete your phone memory, copy everything back to your cleared phone memory card

If only it was that easy. its behind 400 nested folders. Windows cant go that deep. it freezes and FC's after about 200.
Im giving my phone in to get my power button repaired, so i guess ill ask the software tech there if he can figure it out. But thank you Perseus for all your help last night. :good:
I also have this problem guys, how do i update my custom recovery please?

Es file explorer problem (Android 4.4.4)

I use Es file explorer on daily basis, and it's worked perfectly until I upgraded to Android 4.4.4. When I tried to copy file from phone to win pc shared folder (like I done many many times before), it starts for a couple of seconds and then stop, say "time left: computing..." and after that "task failed". I tried everything, reinstalling app, flashing rom again (Viper 3.0.1), flashing firmware again because I know that wifi won't work without new firmware (wifi working properly), but i flashed again just in case. Then I tried another rom (ARHD) and it is the same. Then I revert back to Android 4.4.3 (Viper 2.5.0), and it worked again! Then I tried dirty-flash Viper 3.0.1 and it don't working anymore... I tried also Go file master, but it won't work ether.
So I think it is problem with android 4.4.4, because I tried two different apps with two different 4.4.4 roms and result is the same.
Can anyone who is on android 4.4.4 try to send some file, let's say around 100-200mb, with Es and see if it works? Thanks!
Program is free and on Play Store.

Hello, as an ES File Explorer user, I would like to help you solve your issue. Have you tried using your administrator's logon credentials? You're supposed to type them into the fields as you add your computer (in LAN tab).
Also, you should know that if your IP address to your computer is re-assigned, the connection will be broken, as the IP you originally typed in will no longer work. Maybe in 4.4.3 the IP was the way you wanted it. Try to make it right this time. I will try to recreate your issue on my phone (running 4.4.4 as well) and get back to you.

Thanks for trying to help.
Like I sad, tried everything, and I'm very familiar about ip. First, I totally uninstall es, reboot the phone, install es again from market. There is no assigned lan computers jet. Then, in lan tab, click on scan, and ip address of my computer are showed. When I click on it I can see shared files and folders on my computer, and I can access them. So connection is fine. When I tried to copy large file, 100-200 MB, it starts for couple of seconds and transfer couple of MB, then stop and sad task failed.
Interesting thing is that when I tried to copy FROM pc TO phone, it works without issues and I can transfer large files without any problem. So the problem is copying from phone to pc.
I tried this on three different places, it means 3 different routers, 3 different pcs, 3 different operation systems (XP, WIN7, WIN8.1), and the problem is there.
Like you can see in my first post, I tried to re-flash firmware and rom again, tried different rom, but could not solve the problem. Only when I revert back to android 4.4.3, everything worked again, but again on 4.4..4 not working like described.
Can you try to copy some large file from phone to pc (like one episode of some series) and tell if it working for you? Thanks.
Have you tried contacting the app developer? Its possible the app just hasn't been updated to be compatible with 4.4.4.
ES is a great app. Its been my go-to file explorer for some time now (although I don't use the particular function you are having a problem with). Hope you get the issue sorted out.
No, I haven't, but yes, that could be the problem. But I tried one or two similar apps and have the same problem...
Anyway, I currently using Sambadroid for transferring files and it's working, but like es better and hope it will work like it should in next version.
In Sambadroid I access files on the phone from pc explorer...
So, I tried 2-3 sense roms and the problem is there, but today I installed aosp rom to try it, and ES works without any problems. Strange...

[SOLVED] Downloads get paused right after starting them

Hello guys!
I've recently ran into a problem, where whenever I try to download anything from the internet using a browser, the download starts, but immediately gets paused and I'm not able to resume the download.
The download shows up in the Download Manager, but I'm not able to restart it from there.
The issue came of after installing the leaked Open Beta 9 few weeks ago, and present since. Currently I'm using FreedomOS 2.1, but before that, I was on Open Beta 9, first on the leaked one, then on the official one.
I've been through multiple full wipes, full flashes, the problem keeps sticking.
Tried to download with other browsers, Chrome Dev, Chrome Canary, Firefox, Dolphin, even tried using multiple Download Managers, none of them solved my problem.
Also tried clearing the cache of the Download Manager system app, resetting permissions for each app, tinker with Data Saver settings, without any luck whatsoever.
Please, if anybody has any possible solutions, suggestions, or anything regarding this problem, help me solve this.
Thank you!
Solution:
Somehow, I managed to find a solution.
When I wiped my entire phone storage, including the internal one while installing open beta 9, I made the Download folder manually to put the flashable files in. This was the problem, after renaming the folder, the OS created a new one and now all of my downloads are working correctly.
