There is no best ROM, it's subjective. Find one you like the look of and give it a go, don't like it, try another.
I understand m8 but I'm kinda new to all this flashing custom Rom stuff and just want a stable and fast Rom that does everything the stock 2.2 does and more with the g1 only cm was available through Rom manager so just used that where the desire has a lot of options lol

If you want sense you should either go for a SenseHD rom, or a MoDaCo one.
If you want stock Android, I would recommend CyanogenMod!
You know you don't need to download and flash roms solely through ROM Manager?
My advice is just to look at the ROM forum and download the one with the most hits, it's popular for a reason. There are really only two different types of ROM, Sense and the stock Android bundled usually with ADW.Launcher. It's not like WM where there are a plethora of different mods and registry changes, at least not in my limited experience.
I agree just neva been this spoilt for choice

have you updated to Froyo yet? As far as I know, they are just 2.2 Froyo radios. So if you have updated to 2.2 chances are you don't need to update. (Double check with the radio thing, I am an Android newbie as well so I am not 100% sure.)
As for the kernel, as far as I know you don't need to update this either.
For Sense roms I strongly suggest LeeDroid, and Desire HD roms I'd go for RCMixHD (Camera still not working yet, but it should be fixed soon), non Sense roms, go for OpenDesire, Cyanogen or MIUI
Agreed, if you want to try something refreshingly different, try MIUI.
Still ain't a clue which one to try lol
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
well try Leedroid first, then MIUI for non-sense, and see if you are attracted to sense or not

Also try CyanogenMod or OpenDesire to see if you like Stock Android.
There is no harm in trying different roms and switching if you want!
I've used cm 6 before Ive not flashed roms without using Rom manager and leeroid isn't available through that there's only a small section like cm, defrost nd others
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
IT's not too hard
1. Download Leedroid rom from their minisite's dropbox folder.
2. copy file onto your sd card
3. reboot into recovery
Important part!!
DO A NANDROID BACKUP!!!
i. select backup/restore
ii. select backup and let it rip
iii. return to menu
4. select flash .zip
5. find the leedroid rom & select it
Cheers for help just one more question once I've flashed a custom Rom if I ever wanted to return to stock how would I go about doing it

I really want to root my deisre, but I dont know where to start.
My system information on desire is
Android version 2.2
Baseband 32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2
Kernel 2.6.32.15-gd966f2c0
Build 2.14.207.1 CL233777
All I want to do is be able to install apps2SD, I read somewhere with app2sd+ it lets you fool the phone in thinking you have more internal memory is this true?
I am a complete NooB at this so I just dont want to jump right in, I would like to somehow backup my stock ios so if anythink does go wrong and can reinstall back to default. All help welcome
shanks
look at the stickies, theres ghuides for everything!
if anything does go wrong, then just get the same RUU you've got now, and flash..
hope this helps!
Seems my ruu is.nt there?

Lol I never I just checked, so is ill all good then. If I mess up I can just install that ruu you posted
Thanks again great support on this site ha

You can indeed but if you read the guides carefully and be thorough you can't really go wrong
Thanks I'll have ago on Saturday off work then, if I do all this and 2.3 comes out can I still update or have I got to install a 2.3 Rom.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
A 2.3 official update to a branded desire is not going to come soon, anyhow you'll be rooted soon and a custom rom version of 2.3 will be released months before the official, so you might as well just stick with a custom 2.3 ROM.
But if you decide you want the official 2.3, then you apply the RUU, and then the update.
Ok thanks witch Rom is the best out there for app2SD?

Anything that supports EXT4
EXT3 is enough for A2SD+
Am going to try leedroid that seems the best out there from what I read

It's not really fair on the dev's to state a 'best' rom, i would suggest you try a few different roms out as it will be down to your own personal preference. The most popular ones are listed on the first page of the Android Development section of the forum. Have fun flashing
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
That's about as good a reply as you'll get
Yes your probably right, I'll try leedroid out first. If it dose what it say I don't think ill try anymore. Just want 1gb of internal memory lol

This is exactly what you are looking for. And I highly recommend it as I have used it for over a month with no issues at all.
Read up on this link and go for it. It is just like stock but very fast.
You can also flash a new kernel which I also recommend from pershoot.

Just curious as to why you specifically didn't want Cyanogenmod?
When I first got my first android phone I really didn't think I'd ever need anything more than a rooted stock rom, but after trying CM6 (which was the latest at the time), I never wanted to be on a stock ROM. CM really gives you the feeling of the stock rom (I even just install the stock launcher instead of ADW) but with tons of useful improvements in speed, battery life, and usability.
Not trying to persuade, but just wonderin I always keep a rooted stock 2.2 backup just in case, but I've been using CM7 as my daily for couple weeks now and its great.

Hi guy's
I'm running sense 3.0 and latest Android version from HTC. My phone is not rooted at all, but I would like to root my phone but still keep the update from HTC can I do that I don't want to put any other Rom's on at the moment but may do so in the future.
So can this be done?
If so what would need to do any help would be greatfull, so many things to look at on xda just don't know where to start.
Thanks again guys

You can root your phone and istall a custom ROM with sense 3.0. You can find plenty of room that are basically stock, just rooted, meaning everything is the same like the one you are running now except superuser and busybox have been added.

Which rom do you currently use ? the stock one ?
If so, Sense consumes a bit more battery than AOSP roms.
I used to have Cyanogenmod 7.2 with LordModUE 8.9b7 kernel. And it is very very good.
That's for GB roms.
Both JellyTime and IceColdSandwhich roms are good too (but still in beta).
But Wifi is far from being cool with a battery ... Wifi is energy-greedy!!

If you wand the stock HTC look a recommend android revolution
If you wand better performances and battery life use AOSP(android open source project) or Cyanogenmod of AOKP(android open kang project)
Ice cold sand witch have verry good battery life (only bug is camcorder for wat I know)
Which one do u recommend? Aosp or aokp?
Sent from my HTC Desire HD A9191 using xda app-developers app
Cyanogenmod 7.2 is rock stable !
Most of the GB rom are very stable too, and almost bug free.
You have to try each rom, Sense feeling ? Aosp one ?
I used SmartDroid for a long time and really enjoyed it.
Newer roms, 4.0 or 4.1 based are still buggy and lack some features but are already very fast and gives you the most recent android experience.
It's up to you to find the one that fits your needs.
One more point, updating your Radio can be good for your battery too.
I personnaly use 26.14.04.28_M without any issue. (but I may update it now, as I've just flashed Jelly time )
I think i'll go for the cyanogen 7.0, does it give a better battery life?
And btw what is "kernal" and which one should i use and how?

Go for 7.2 instead of 7.0
7.2 is the stable one for Desire HD: http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?type=stable&device=ace
A kernel is the core of the operating system. To extremely sum up, it deals with your hardware and your programs.
Installing a new one can give you some optimizations, better response, better battery etc.
I personally used the LordModUE kernels. Here is a direct link for the lastest version: http://blackice.omca.co.uk/download...ger-kernels/lordmodUEv8.9-CFS-b7-2WCR-TUN.zip
But be aware that to flash a kernel, you need to first boot with the kernel of the rom (here the CM one), then flash the new one.

First of all, and prior to flashing any rom, you need to perform a nandroid backup.
This is a backup of your current ROM, making an image of each partition, to be able to restore it later, in case of a crash or anything else.
Once you've rooted your phone, a recovery should be installed.
To perform a nandroid backup, you reboot into recovery and choose "backup".
Or, you can install Rom Manager from the market, and choose the same option.
Once this is done, and only after this, you're good to flash any rom you want !
Another method exits to reflash the stock rom, using RUU.
I won't explain this as you can find your answer on this forum.
EDIT: don't forget to check MD5 or SHA1 sum to check the ROM/kernel integrity you download.
I use camera a lot is there any jelly bean custom mod with a working camera cause I am now bored to look at the dame gingerbread is since past 1 yr almost....want some change....
Sent from my HTC Desire HD A9191 using xda app-developers app
As far as I know, Jelly Time has a working stock camera app.
Actually, video recording in 720p is the only issue. Then, yes, I can take pictures with the stock app on Jelly Time ROM (currently beta 11).
If you want to record a video, you'll have either to change the resolution to 480p or use another app from the market (Videocam Illusion I believe, didn't test it though).
More information here.
The others JB based ROMs are currently too immature for now, and are not as stable as JellyTime.
Also, please be warn that you need to read the opening post (OP) carefully, the moderators are getting annoyed with all the same questions, which answers can be found in the OP.

Advance Ace Hack Kit - a tool developed by former xda member attn1 used to root, SIM Unlock & ENG S-OFF (ENG S-OFF allows you to flash custom ROM's without security checks e.g. md5 checks, bypassing restrictions placed by HTC on our device). He removed the link to it from the forums as he left xda due to personal reasons. Search attn1 ace hack kit on google to find it, as he hosts it on his website now

Yes your contacts, data and all personal data will be wiped upon flashing a new ROM, as flashing a ROM almost always requires you to wipe the data partitions. I reccomend you backup all of your data to avoid it. If your android and Sense version is android 2.3.5 and Sense version 3.0 then then you will have to downgrade your software version then attempt root
