[HOWTO] Create a GoldCard - Bypassing the RUU/SPL CID check to Root/Downgrade

If you are stuck on a ROM you don't like (t-mobile/asian carrier etc.) you can use this howto to create a goldcard to bypass the CID checks so you can downgrade and root your Hero.
01. Download QMAT 5.06 here
It’s a demo version so will only run for 10 minutes.
02. Format your SD card to FAT32. Please keep in mind some brands of SD cards do not work.
03. Use adb to run this command: adb shell cat /sys/class/mmc_host/mmc1/mmc1:*/cid
04. Copy the SD card cid code displayed after the adb command.
05. Start Qmat and Click on Cyptoanalysis Tools > Crypto Toolbox.
06. Look at the bottom, there is a text box (beside the “Reverse String” button) enter the SD card cid code you got earlier.
Click on the “Reverse String” button, the result is reversed…
Example: 532600bd227d9c0347329407514d5402
07. Copy the reversed SD card cid code.
08. Go to QMAT goldcard site here to generate your goldcard (yes it says for G1 but works for our Hero too).
09. Enter your email. For the correct SD card cid code, you need to replace the first 2 characters to 00.
Example: From “532600bd227d9c0347329407514d5402” to “002600bd227d9c0347329407514d5402”
10. Click Continue and you will receive the goldcard.img in .zip format in your email.
11. Go to your email, download the zip file and save it to a directory and unzip it to goldcard.img
12. Download HxD Hex Editor from here
13. Install and launch HxD Hex Editor program. (make sure you use "Run as Administrator" under Vista and win 7)
14. Go to Extra tab > Open Disk. Under Physical disk, select Removable Disk (Must be your SD card), uncheck “Open as Readonly), click OK.
15. Go to Extra again, Open Disk Image, open up goldcard.img which you’ve saved/unzipped earlier.
Now, you should have two tabs, one is your removable disk, the other is goldcard.img. Press OK when prompted for “Sector Size” 512 (Hard disks/Floppy disks), click OK.
16. Click on goldcard.img tab. Go to Edit tab > Select All, edit tab again > copy.
17. Click on the “removable disk” tab. Select offset 00000000 till offset 00000170 (including the 00000170 line), click on Edit tab and then Paste Write.
18. Click on File > Save. now you can exit the program.
19. Reboot your phone with this SD Card (now GoldCard) inside
20. Use the Official HTC RUU to downgrade to 2.73.405.5 (which you can get here) from which you can fastboot boot and/or root your phone with flashrec.

Holy ****znit it works! Downgrading!!!!!

Hmm. I've followed the guide and successfully skipped the CID lock check of the device and flashed it to version 2.73.405.5 WWE. Problem is, I can't seem to get the device to boot into recovery mode after using flashrec (I did download and flash it just fine). the recovery mode (home + power) booted the device but it hangs at the boot screen where it says HERO. Any idea?
Edit: Ah. a little bit of the update. while the buttons do not work, i can use adb shell reboot recovery; however, after using flashrec, it still shows the old recovery screen ?
Edit2: confirmed, recovery flasher doesn't work now im using the SEA rom

I had the same issue with Recovery Flasher I couldn't to boot into recovery. I was also unable to downgrade to the 1.7 roms due to a bootloader version error, arghhh. Anywho, managed to work my way round it, i'll explain below. I've got a T-Mobile G2 updated to the latest rom (so no root access).
I first followed the instructions on making a goldcard and then flashed the 2.73.405.5 WWE rom fine.
Now make sure you have the cm-hero-recovery.img (http://content.modaco.net/dropzone/modacopatchedrecovery-1.0.zip) on the root of your sdcard. Aswell as Instant Root (http://neilandtheresa.co.uk/Android/) now install Instant Root on the phone. It should pop up with a notification "instant root was sucessfully" or along those lines. (If you have a problem installing Instant Root make sure Settings>Applications>Unknown Sources is checked)
Instant root then allows for root access with adb shell using the following 2 commands:
1) adb shell
then
2) su
the icon should change from a $ to #.
Now flash the recovery image with the following command:
1) flash_image recovery /sdcard/cm-hero-recovery.img
This shouldn't take that long once completed it will go back the # prompt example below.
# flash_image recovery /sdcard/cm-hero-recovery.img (I typed this)
flash_image recovery /sdcard/cm-hero-recovery.img (this pops up)
# (this shows the flash completed)
Now pull out your usb cable and battery, turn on the phone with the battery in place while holding the home button and it should boot into the custom recovery .
Well, I hope this helps someone and I didn't just waste my time . Oh, thanks for posting the goldcard instructions.

Thanks so much! I did the exact process before (see other thread) but I must have missed something. Following this process exactly is what did it. I am guessing something about the reboot and the RUU is where i went wrong before.
I can confirm this works on the 2.73.707.9 ROM

yup, we couldn't root certain asian carrier roms and t-mob rom and they couldnt downgrade so the where stuck, until now....

Did it last night and got it working, used the AMON Hero recovery image instead and partitioned my sd card without going through the manual adb solution.

Unlocking The Bootloader And Obtaining Root
*This part of the tutorial is geared towards Windows users. I have a windows machine and will post instructions only on methods I personally have tested. This guide will assist other users. Once we unlock and root your device: this guide will be relevant to everyone.*
Time required:
20-40 minutes.
Setting up ADB for our device:
Download the AndroidSDK onto your computer.
Note: Google changes their mind every other week as to if this will be distributed as a .zip or an .exe. If you get an .zip file, simply extract the contents to your C:\ drive. For an .exe install it like you would any other program, but set the path directly to the C:\ drive when the installer asks.
Or...you can use this page to download the "ADB for Dummies AIO App."
This will automatically install ADB for you to your C:\ directory. It's very very simple this way.
If your platform-tools folder doesn't have a fastboot.exe, place this fastboot.exe file in your C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools (or possibly simply called tools, if you set up ADB ages ago) folder.
Now you have ADB installed! Congratulations.
Unlocking the Bootloader:
***NOTE***
This will perform a factory reset on your device. You'll lose all applications. You'll lose everything. Even the data on your SD Card! Backup your SD to your computer BEFORE performing this. There is a method for backing your applications up, detailed HERE.
Get the drivers:
Uninstall any previously attempted drivers if they don't work and move to the next.
Samsung's website has a download here under "Manuals & Downloads > Software."
Option Two: Navigate to the "Device Manager" (Control Panel > Device Manager) in Windows and Select the android device. Open the properties and select the "Install Driver" option. Pick the driver with "Install from disk." Ignore any warnings about the driver not being signed properly.
PDAnet's drivers may work if the above options don't. Simply install PDAnet (after uninstalling any previous attempted driver installations) to get the drivers.
While that is downloading, on your Galaxy Nexus: turn USB debugging on.
This can be found in Settings>Developer Options>USB Debugging
Once the drivers are installed, navigate to the C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools folder on your computer.
Hold shift and right click. Select "Open Command Window Here."
On your phone: turn USB Debugging On. This can be found in Settings>Developer Settings.
Plug your phone into the computer. Now in this command window type:

(Hit Enter)
Your phone should now boot into a screen with a green android with his chest exposed.
Type this:

fastboot oem unlock
(Hit Enter)
If your Command Prompt displays the message "waiting for device" your driver wasn't successfully installed.
Close the Command Prompt window and open Device manager while your phone is still plugged in. (Search for it using the search option).
Right Click the "Android" option and select Update Driver. Choose to "Browse My Computer" and "Let Me Pick From A List." Pick the Samsung driver with the newest date and install it. Now retry the code above.
Your phone will ask if you want to unlock it. Select "Yes" by using the volume keys and use power to select it.
Now, navigate to "Recovery Mode" with the volume keys. Use power to select.
A screen with another Android will pop up. Press Volume Up and Power at the same time.
Select Factory Reset. This process may take a few minutes. Be patient and let it work.
Once finished, select "Reboot."
Your phone is now unlocked!
Obtaining Root Access and Custom Recovery:
Turn on USB Debugging in Settings>Developer Options>USB Debugging.
Download the following:
SuperSU (CWM .zip)
CWM (Pick the version for your device [GSM/SPRINT/VERIZON])
Place the recovery-clockwork-VERSIONNUMBER-toro.img (or the recovery-clockwork-VERSIONNUMBER-toroplus.img if you're a Sprint user. Or the recovery-clockwork-VERSIONNUMBER-maguro.img if you're a GSM user) file into your C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools folder.
Put the SuperSU.zip on your phone.
Open another Command Prompt if it isn't still open. (Navigate to C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools and shift + right click. Select "Open Command Window Here.")
With your phone plugged in type:

adb reboot bootloader
(Hit Enter)
And wait for your phone to boot into the android again.
Now type:

fastboot flash recovery IMAGENAME.img
(Change the file name to the correct file name and Hit Enter)
Once that is finished: select the "Recovery Mode" option again on your phone.
You should get a new recovery menu here. Select "install zip from sd card" and "choose zip from sd card."
Find the SuperSU.zip that you transferred earlier and select "Yes" to installing.
Navigate back to "Reboot" and reboot your phone.
You're now rooted!
However, ClockworkMod Recovery won't continue to load after this.
To fix this, find "Rom Manager" from the market. (The free version is fine.) Use the "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" option.
If your recovery still doesn't stick around after a reboot, you have another couple options. Find a file explorer that allows root access, such as Root Explorer. Use this program to rename /system/etc/install-recovery.sh to /system/etc/install-recovery.bak. You'll need to mount the system as r/w to do this. Root Explorer provides a button at the top to do so.
Or, you can do this completely manually by firing up ADB again and running a few commands:

Your phone is now unlocked, rooted, and has a custom recovery!

Installing Custom Roms Kernels and Tweaks
All of the instructions below require your bootloader to be unlocked. Please follow the guide above and return here when you're done.
Backing Your Files Up:
Time required:
15-25 minutes.
Making a Nandroid
The first thing you're going to want to do is back up your phone's entire system. This is done by making a "nandroid."
To do this, boot into ClockworkMod Recovery. To accomplish this: Turn your phone off. Once it is completely off: hold both volume buttons and the power button until the Android with his chest exposed is displayed. Navigate to the "Recovery Mode" option and select "backup."
This will take some time. Be patient and let it finish. This process is important! You should always have a recent nandroid available on your device.
Backing Your Applications Up
Install Titanium Backup from the market.
Open Titanium Backup. A Superuser request should pop up. Allow it. Note: if Titanium Backup then says it failed to obtain root access; press the menu button and select more>reload application.
Press menu>batch. Select "Backup all User Apps." Select all and "Run the Batch Operation."
Let the process complete. This may take quite some time: depending on how many applications you have installed.
You can now backup your Text Messages, Bookmarks, and WiFi addresses with Titanium Backup as well.
Press Menu>Backup Data To XML to do so.
Backing Your Contacts Up
Note: This process may or not be useful to you. The Google servers should automatically import any contacts you have stored back whenever you install a new rom. Also note that Facebook/Google+/etc contacts will need to be synced again through their respective applications.
Open the Contacts application.
Press the Menu button.
Select import/export.
Export to storage.
Installing A Rom (Or Kernel/Radios/Tweaks/Themes/etc.)
Time Required:
5-10 minutes.
Note:
Follow the guide above about backing your phone up before attempting!
This guide will also work for flashing kernels/radios/themes/tweaks/etc. Simply ignore the part about wiping data and wipe whatever the thread says you should. You only need to restore data after a rom install.
Find a Rom You'd Like To Try:
Verizon Galaxy Nexus
Sprint Galaxy Nexus
GSM Galaxy Nexus
Download the rom you'd like to try on your device.
Most roms also require you to install "gapps" as well.
You can find the correct ones for the rom you're using in the rom thread.
Make sure the Rom and Gapps are on your SD card.
Now, open Google Wallet (if you have it installed) and press Options>Settings>Reset Google Wallet. This will prevent the "Secure Element" errors some users have experienced.
Boot into ClockworkMod Recovery by turning your device completely off. Hold volume up, volume down, and power until the green Android with the open chest is displayed. Navigate to "Recovery Mode" with the volume buttons and select using the power button.
Remember to have a recent nandroid before continuing!
Navigate to "wipe data/factory reset" and select it. Select "yes."
Wait for the process to complete. This may take some time. Be patient!
Once complete: Navigate to "Install Zip from SD card" and "Choose zip from SD card."
Find the rom's .zip and install it. Once that completes install any applicable gapps' .zip.
Select the "Reboot" option.
Congratulations! Your phone should now boot into the custom rom!
Follow the prompts to re-activate your phone.
Restoring Your Applications / Contacts / Nandroid
Time Required:
5-15 minutes.
Restoring Your Applicaions
Install Titanium Backup. Note: you may want the pro key. If you have it, you won't have to manually click "install" on each application. The process is completely automated. Open Titanium Backup (grant root access. If titanium says it failed to obtain root access, press menu>more>reload application). Press menu>batch>restore missing apps with data. Now, here you have a choice to make. Do you want a completely clean install? Select "app only" and run the batch operation (Deselect Google Wallet first. We don't want to risk restoring wallet in any way. Install it manually through the Play Store.). Do you want all of your application data (saved games/settings/etc)? Select "app+data" and run the batch operation (Deselect Google Wallet first. We don't want to risk restoring wallet in any way. Install it manually through the Play Store.). This MAY cause you problems or it may not. Personally, I often restore application data and seldom run into any trouble. If you do find that restoring data caused problems, follow the guide above to re-install your rom and restore without data. This process will take some time. Be patient (I'd suggest turning your screen off so the screen doesn't burn, but that's just me.) It will vibrate upon completion.
You can now restore your Text Messages, Bookmarks, and WiFi addresses if you backed them up by pressing Menu>Restore Data From XML.
Note:
Overclocking/CPU tweaking applications should never be restored with data. Simply deselect it from the list.
Facebook/Haxsync/Google+ may have problems restoring your contacts when installed through Titanium Backup. Simply uninstall and reinstall through the market (and be sure to log in and select to sync your contacts again).
Also, if you have NFC Task Launcher successfully launching Tasker tasks with your stickers: they may not immediately work.
Through my testing, it's as simple to fix as uninstalling NFC Task Launcher and Tasker. Restore Tasker first. Then restore NFC task launcher.
Restoring Your Contacts
If google fails to restore your contacts (not facebook/haxsync/google+/etc) you may import them manually if you backed them up.
Open the contacts application and press menu>import/export>import from storage.
Restoring A Nandroid
If your phone is acting funny or won't boot...restore a nandroid from a previous rom or working set-up.
You may also use a Nandroid to switch back to a previous rom if you decide you don't like the one you're on.
Do this by booting into ClockworkMod Recovery (hold volume up, volume down, and power while your phone is off and navigate to "Recovery Mode").
Simply select "restore" and find the most recent (or relevant) backup.
This process will take some time. Be patient and let it complete! Once done, select "Reboot."
Note:
Nandroids are stored in the "clockworkmod" folder on your SD card. They take up quite a bit of space. ALWAYS have at least one recent one on your SD card. However, since these are huge files: you may like to delete old ones to save space. You must delete backups by booting into CWM and navigating to Backup and Restore>Delete.
Important Notes About Restoration
I outline the method of using Titanium Backup above for a reason. Restoring system applications and data is the most common cause of problems on custom roms. For this reason, always ONLY restore "missing applications" from "user applications" that were backed up when restoring onto a new rom. Every time you restore system data or applications a narwhal sodomizes your favorite childhood cartoon. This is FACT.
Installing Alternate Custom Recoveries
If you find a custom recovery (such as the touch-recovery options) that came as a .img file:
Use these instructions to flash. Plug your phone into the computer. Open up ADB. Move the .img to the C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools folder.
Type the following:

You can also manually boot to the bootloader by powering off and holding volume down, volume up, power buttons until the green Android with his chest exposed is displayed.
Then type:

fastboot flash recovery FILENAME.img
(Replace the file name with whatever the .img is called and Hit Enter).
Wait for the process to complete and reboot.

Panic Section! (Something is Wrong)
Q: My phone won't boot!
A: The easiest option is to get into recovery and restore a nandroid using the above guide (pull battery to put phone in an off-state if needed).
However, more advanced options are available if you don't have a nandroid available (You're naughty).
Do you have another rom .zip available on your SD card? If so, simply use the above guide for installing a rom to get you booting again.
If not, you can download one on your PC. Boot into fastboot (the green Android with open chest menu). Navigate to recovery and select it with the power button.
Move the .zip to the C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools folder.
Open ADB.
Change the NAMEOFZIP.zip below to the correct file name...and perform the action.

adb push NAMEOFZIP.zip /sdcard/NAMEOFZIP.zip
(Hit enter)
You may have to reboot recovery to get the file to show up. Now follow the guide above for flashing a rom to get you booting again.
Did you install a tweak that modified only a file or two on your phone? (Find this out by opening the .zip and looking in the folders (ignore META-INF). Good news! We MAY be able to recover you completely. If this doesn't work...you'll have to follow another method.
Get your phone into fastboot (the boot-menu that allows you to select recovery/reboot/etc). Navigate to recovery and select it. Start up ADB. Pull the files that were modified out of the stock rom's .zip (using whatever tweak you were installing as reference to find what was changed) that you're on into the C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools folder. Now we're going to push these files onto your phone...replacing the tweaked ones and hopefully getting you booted again. Use this code, but change the values of the file name and where it should reside. This is only an example!

mount -o remount,rw -t ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 /system
(Hit Enter)
This will mount your system so you can write to it.
Code:
exit
(Hit Enter)
This should exit shell and allow the use of adb commands again. You may need to type it a couple of times (until the #_ changes back to the platform_tools> prompt).

adb push framework-res.apk /system/framework/framework-res.apk
(Press enter after each file that you need to replace).
Note: This last option probably won't work. I'd just skip over it unless you're absolutely adamant about restoring your current setup and want to try everything possible.
Q: I want my SDcard files from my phone...but I'm in a situation where I need to flash stock images! This will erase my SD content. What can I do to save it?
A: Do you have a custom recovery installed? If not, download a custom recovery from post one in this guide and flash it using those instructions. You'll need to be in a custom recovery in order to obtain ADB access without booting your phone. Boot into recovery (With phone turned off: hold Power and Volume+ and Volume- until the bootloader pops up and navigate to "Recovery"). Run the command:

This will put all of your files into a folder called "SDCARD" in your C:\ drive. Keep in mind that this will take a LONG time. Maybe a couple of hours.
To restore once you're booting again:
Move the "SDCARD" folder you created from your C:\ drive to the platform-tools folder. Then input:

A: Without knowing anything about your situation...I'd say you either have severely bad data somewhere or some bad kernel tweaks. Use the rom install guide above, paying close attention to the part about backing up and restoring if you haven't already. In the case of a kernel problem, you're likely undervolting too low. Restore the stock kernel values and see if your problems subside.
Q: My phone screen won't turn on! This requires a battery pull to fix.
A: This is called a "Black Screen of Death" or BSOD. This is generally due to using a governor such as InteractiveX or HotplugX or possibly undervolting your device too low. Change governors or up your slots a bit.
Q: My phone is doing really weird things. Regardless of kernel/rom and even if I don't restore any data at all! Either that or I simply cannot boot up! My phone is possessed no matter what I do!

Q: What is the best rom?
A: The "best" rom is a matter of opinion. Do you like a certain customization and can't live without it? Use a rom that has that option.
Q: What is the best rom for battery life?
A: Roms themselves really shouldn't impact your battery all that much. They can have an impact, but if you're really looking for better battery I'd suggest swapping kernels or tweaking yours.
Q: What is the best rom for stability?
A: All of the roms out are "stable." They may have options that don't work correctly, but generally: this is user error. If you follow my advice on installing a rom, you'll end up with MUCH fewer bugs.
Q: What is the best kernel?
A: The best kernel is a matter of opinion. Some users may love one, while others swear by another. Find one you like and tweak it accordingly.
Q: How do I tweak a kernel for better battery?
A: Generally, you'll want to either change your governor and or undervolt and or underclock your kernel. This is done either by using SetCPU or similar apps, or with an option in your rom (usually labeled "performance" or something similar). Take note: extremely high/low voltages may cause instability. Never "set at boot" until you've thoroughly tested the options you've set. Testing includes low strain (like turning your screen off for an hour) and high strain (like playing a game for an hour) scenarios. To be extra safe: run the values for a couple days before setting them at boot. Follow the users ideas in the kernel's threads for some guidelines. However, remember that not all values will play nicely with all phones.
Miscellaneous
Q: Why does my phone perform so bad on benchmarking tests?
A: This depends on what you define as "bad." Does your phone feel fine? Ignore it. If your phone is really sluggish...you're running bad kernel settings or have bad data somewhere. That being said: our phones aren't going to be FANTASTIC with these benchmark tests. Sorry, but they aren't. We have a huge screen. And huge pixel density. And our GPU isn't the greatest of greats. This isn't bashing on the nexus at all. I'd rather have a phone that performs in every day use than a phone that gets a "FANTASTIC" benchmark but feels groggy when I perform simple tasks.
Q: How can Verizon users get Google Wallet?
A: Scan this with Google Goggles. Open the link with the Play Store.
Q: Why isn't Google Wallet working at [store]?
A: I'm not sure if it's a Google Wallet problem, or a problem with the terminal. But I personally struggle to find a terminal that consistently works in my area. Something that has generally worked for me is to open wallet and go to Options>Reset Google Wallet. You must then re-add any cards you had.

Neat Ideas / How to Show Off the Galaxy Nexus
-Get some NFC stickers. Tagstand has them available.
You can use these to make your phone perform certain tasks when you touch the sticker. Use NFC Task Launcher to define the tasks. These are capable of doing simple things like muting your volume to the more complex like turning on Tasker tasks that do things like auto-reply to text messages while you're at work.

Kernels are the base of your phone.
They are the "engine" as far as software is concerned.
Bad Kernel/Rom combinations...kind of.
Some features may be removed from kernels. Like the ability to use the color control built into CM9. But generally, no. Other than hard-linked features built for the rom and supported by the kernel, no. I've yet to find any other than the CM9 reference I made.
Going back is as simple as re-flashing your kernel.
Remember: turn of any CPU changing apps like SetCPU or Rom-specific "performance" features before switching. You can then re-evaluate your settings.
Bamf is toro only still, I believe.

Actually, I would include that...
But flashing recovery through rom manager works as well.
And I'd rather keep it noob-friendly.
I follow a forum where they said to rename that...and there are like 15 pages of people asking the same questions as to why terminal/adb aren't working.

Fixed wording of "shift" showing as "****" lol.

[GUIDE][All-In-One]LG Optimus Me P350

So, I decided to write this guide here as I couldn't find a complete one and had to jump from thread to thread (and sometimes even the sub-forum) for finding the answer.
First I wrote it in my blog and I decided to post it here. Maybe some steps are vague in details but I'm planning to detail it even more (remember, I wrote it in my personal blog first). So, here it is:

Some Personal History
My experience with Android. UF! Where to start? So, I got my phone from the United States. You have no idea how wonderful it was to have the phone in my hands. Anxiety and curiosity. For some reason I always read that the first thing anyone does is root the phone and then continue doing everyday activities that do not require root, so I tried to live without rooting the phone, but I couldn’t wait for the week to go by. I had to get the best! Small problems, fixes and updates. And since I have my phone on sale, I publish this step by step guide to modify it and not die trying.
Tech Specs
Let’s start from the beginning, know the phone. Mid/low-range phone created by LG for those in a short budget but want to have a good Android experience. It has a 600 MHz processor, 256 MB RAM and ROM capacity of 512 (140 MB available for applications and data). 2.8 inch capacitive screen, 240 × 320 screen resolution. Wi-Fi b/g wireless connection, Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR, and USB 2.0 up to 480 Mbit/s. 3.1 MP camera (no flash) and FM Radio. Not bad for a basic device. Complete specifications can be found here. Enough for a casual user. But if you’re not a casual user (hence a XDA member), read on.
First of all, everything you do on the phone number is on your own. You yourself are responsible for what you do, not do, stop doing, fail, fail to read and/or shortcut you may have taken. These steps are the ones that worked for me. I am not responsible if the phone dies in the process, the cat bites the cable in the middle process, the heavens begins to fall, the 3rd world war starts or if the neighbor has a heart attack … You’ll be calling 911 afterwards… You’ve been warned!
USB Debugging
The first thing you have to learn is to turn on USB debugging. Here is a guide how to do it (If you wanna see a pictorial guide). But essentially you have to go to Settings > Application > Development and check where it says USB Debugging. Pretty easy. What is this good for? Well, for starters. modify the phone however we see fit. But most important USB Debugging allows the phone to communicate verbosely with PC with the Android SDK installed. More on this later.
KDZ Updater
KDZ Updater is an application used by LG for flashing official operating systems themselves. How did this application saw daylight outside the company, I don’t know very well, but apparently a leak appeared on LG India, but not sure. In any case, this application is our last line of salvation and the main tool for our little friend.
To install official KDZs must follow these steps:
Install the updated drivers by following the steps listed on this page.
Connect the phone with USB Debugging activated
IMPORTANT: Disable the Virtual USB Modem device from Windows Device Manager. Omit this step and the device may brick in the upgrade process.
Run the application in Administrator mode (only required on Windows Vista / 7).
In the Type drop-down list select 3GQCT and in PhoneMode, DIAG. Where it says Version, will appear the version that is installed on the phone.
Select the KDZ file to install by clicking on the button with the folder icon. Preferably save the file KDZ in the root of the hard drive as there will be little chance for error when reading the file.
Press the button “Launch Software Update”. The phone will reboot into Emergency Mode. This is normal.
Pray all you know and go for a cup of tea. The process takes about 8 to 10 minutes.
If all went well, the phone will turn off and the program displays a line that says = FINISHED =.
To start, first go into recovery mode by pressing the following buttons: Vol- & Power. This will make any old or unnecessary information to be removed. The phone will reboot into the system normally.
Original Thread
Root (Gingerbreak and SuperOneClick)
Ok, what we came here for. Rooting the phone. How do I do? It’s scary! Says who?! Lets start with the choices we have. Ok, we have the phone, but we have not updated anything, How do I get root? Gingerbreak comes on the scene. Pretty simple process: download, Enable USB Debugging, run, press Root, wait for the restart, confirm. Simple, right? Also read the instructions and warning on the link above in case something I overlooked, but that basically is the process. By the way, install Busybox, very important for future processes.
Stop, stop, stop … And if I upgraded the phone? Gingerbreak seems not to work! What do I do?! Mainly, DO NOT PANIC! First things first. Go to “About phone” and see that version it says; something different than 2.2? Cool, no problem. SuperOneClick comes on scene. Download the application, unzip. I assume you already installed the drivers, right? Otherwise, do it and come back when you have done so. Ready? Continue. Turn on USB Debugging and connect the phone to the computer. Execute the application and press the button that says “Root”. Need more information? Here is a video explaining step by step (its in spanish, but graphics needs no language) and if the antivirus gets all paranoid, read the explanation here.
Recovery (Amon-RA and CWM)
Ok, moving on. Just as clarification: From this step on, the phone should already be rooted. Otherwise, you will mourn at the very end because the phone will brick and you’ll end with a very good and expensive paperweight. What is a Recovery? Here the answer.
This is essential before changing the insides of the phone and a step that I believe needs to be forever linked to rooting process. Why? Simple! Installing a Recovery allows full system backup and restore if something goes wrong. That linking to rooting process? Because if you install a root application, modify the system, and damage the system, it can be restored to a previous time and we’re all happy campers. See?
So this is where we get our hands dirty. Initially, I ask again, have you installed the drivers? (From this point on I shouldn’t ask) Have you rooted the phone? Responded twice yes? Perfect. Now, download the Android SDK or only the .zip attached here (unzip preferably in C:\ADB\) to continue this process. Also download the Recovery that you will install, we have Amon-RA and ClockworkMod (CWM) v5, v5 touch, and v6, extract the recovery.img file to the folder where adb.exe is (If you used the SDK installer, should be at C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools\; if you used the .zip, and extracted as recommended, C:\ADB\). Which to choose? My recommendation, CWM v5 (either one). Connect the phone to the computer in with USB Debugging activated. By the way, how do you feel using command line in Windows? Moving on…
Open a command window, go to where adb.exe is and run the following commands:

With this we have copied what we need into the phone’s SD card. Just to clarify: 1) the flash_image file can only be found in the recovery Amon-RA zip (not sure if it is generic or modified exclusively for the P350, then I’d rather play it safe) and 2) CWM recovery v5 and v5 touch files come in zip-installable, but you can open the file and use recovery.img in it. In CWM v6 there is an installable zip and another to follow this same process. Lets continue…

Up to this we have only prepared the area to install the Recovery. It it recommended to reboot the phone in this step, in case you run out of virtual memory but is not really so necessary (If you see an error message, then reboot). That’s yours decision. Continue…

To confirm that everything is installed without issues it must happen one thing and do another thing. What must happen is when you execute the flash_image command, no errors should appear, if otherwise reboot and repeat the last block of commands. What must be done is execute the command reboot recovery and if everything is alright, you should go into Recovery menu, if not then all the information has been erased and back to square 1 (it happened to me the first time).
Kernel
Just for safety: are drivers installed? Root acquired? Recovery installed? Already made a backup of the ROM in use at the moment (so far should be the LG ROM)? Do it!!
So, what’s a kernel? Here’s the answer. What choices do we have? Well not too many, it depends. Are we still on the LG Stock ROM or a Froyo-based ROM (oh, getting ahead aren’t we?!)? Well, the truth, with this ROMs there are not many: Team Pecan Kernel would be my recommendation, RoQ Kernel which also works quite well. CM7 ROM or any other Gingerbread-based? Ron's RM CAF Kernel (updated weekly), pax0r kernel (discontinued), Vivek Kernel (also discontinued but higher than pax0r). Read how to use Recovery for the installation of installable zip files from Recovery. This is also applicable for the installation of ROMs.
ROM
Still with me? Still no cardiac arrest? Relax, breathe! As we reach the last modification process of the phone. After surviving this, you will have the full capacity to recover the phone from any eventuality. Dictionary, which is a ROM? Here the answer.
ROM, What options do we have? Well, although it may seems, there are many options to choose from! We have some created from source code, based-on and others that have been “ported” to work with the device. Among those created from the source we have: CyanogenMod 7.2, Pure CM Invasion and CyanogenMod 9 (Work in Progress, not quite stable), based-on: Androm x4.2 (CM7) Arc XP (CM7), Gingerbread Optimus UI (CM7) Gingerblur (CM7) and MIUI v4 (based on CM7, Arc XP with a theme very close to the real MIUI, Japanese ROM). Ports: JoyOS, ICS (Discontinued unstable), BeautySense (Decent and functional).
Further Development/Tweaks
At the moment a new tool has been released called LG P350 Pecan Toolkit, developed by antdking. Its in early development and so far it roots, unroots and installs recovery. Saves some the hassle of the command line but if we haven’t gone through all the problems and commands, what have we learned? Anyways, here’s the original thread where you can follow the development and post ideas or bugs.
If you wanna go all-in into ROM cracking and research, we have also the LGExtract tool, which unpacks the KDZ file into bits and pieces. DZ Extract Tool extracts the files within a DZ package very much into source code. I've used these tools but as my experience with coding and android development is very close to none all I've done is extract the files and read them. Antdking reminded me of a simple yet powerful tool to continue decompiling the LG filesystem called unyaffsmbn. I came across it when we were trying to decompile baseband (amss.mbn) for CM9 without success, just lo later know that the tool just decompiled system.mbn. Oh well. Antdking compiled unyaffsmbn into a nice little tool ready to work, here it is.
The volume on this phone, as many may know, is low. But there is a way to elevate it. Execute the phone app and press: 3845#*350#. This will bring up a Hidden Menu. Go to: Device Test > Sound Test > Audio CAL Tool > Subsystem Calibration. In the Gain Type dropdown list, select Speaker Gain. Set Data textbox gets focus, input the number 90 and press OK button. In Gain Type, select Input1 Gain, and we press Ok button again. Exit the Hidden Menu. This will elevate the speaker volume but just temporary, it will be restored to default values when rebooted. So either don't reboot or repeat this process everytime you reboot.
And that would be all. Happy hacking!

There are still many of people out there who are thinking about Unlocking their Bootloaders, Rooting and installing a custom ROM onto their HTC One X.
I recently did so myself and although I've been a member on XDA for a while now and I rooted my old HTC Sensation I found the process to vary with my HOX.
Now there are many amazing Guides and "How-To's" already out there on XDA but I thought that I'd compile a lot of what's already in those threads and turn all of the yummyness that's already out there on XDA and write this from a first timers perspective.
Disclaimer:- Please note that I'm no expert when it comes to this stuff and I'm not amazing at trouble shooting, if you follow this guide it should turn out fine but if not then this is no fault of my own, you do all of this at your own risk! As I say, it should be fine and you should get through this guide fine. There may be better ways of doing what I'm showing you in this guide but this is how I did it and it worked out okay for me. If you know of a better way the please feel free to state so in the following thread.

THIS GUIDE IS FOR ICS ROMS ONLY, NOT JB ROMS.
So after that disclaimer relax, read, re-read and take your time and hopefully by the end of this guide you'll have a Custom Rom running on your HOX and without too much panicking and worrying. It's a bit wordy and a bit lengthy but it's an in depth guide.
BEFORE WE START! Go to your HTC One X, Settings, Developer Options and make sure that you've got USB debugging checked! I also always have Fast boot checked in the Power options as well, it's not really important for this guide but I like to know that when I turn my HTC One X off that it is truly off!
Also if you wish you can pop into security and check on 'Allow installation of non-Market apps in Unknown Sources. Again, not really important for this guide but always good to have checked!

In this guide I talk about using ARHD 9.2, this is because it's the latest version that's been released at the time of writing. Naturally ARHD will be updated but the guide will still be okay to follow.

Installing HTC Sync and the Android SDK onto your PC:-
Before we start anything I personally think that it's a good idea to get these two steps out of the way as we're going to need to use these tools a bit later on.
HTC Sync
To install HTC Sync the best way to do this is to follow this LINK and click on the Download link on the right hand side. Follow the Set-Up wizard and get HTC Sync installed onto your PC. Now I'm sure that I don't have to talk you through this step so we'll leave this part now and move onto getting the Android SDK.

Now that you've gotten HTC Sync set-up onto your machine we'll start with the Android SDK, you can find the installation files here: Android SDK For Windows, Click on the "Download the SDK For Windows link.". Let it download the Run the file.
Now to make life a bit easier for us later, when you get to the menu for choosing the Destination of the program we'll alter this for ease of use later. When I'm in set-up it automatically sets the location to

Backing Up Your Data:-
When I went to Unlock My Bootloader I read that I'd loose my data and I wasn't too happy about this, I came across this thread '[GUIDE] Full Phone Backup without Unlock or Root', which was a life saver, I'll talk you through some of it just so that we can get a backup made but if you want more concise instructions then make the jump to the thread and have a look!
Now, to backup!
Open your Command Prompt, for those of you who don't know how to do this it's Start > Run... > CMD > Okay. Now that you've got your Command Prompt open we'll need to find adb.exe, which should be at this location
C:\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools

as this is where we chose the Android SDK to be located when we installed it earlier!
So to find this in the command prompt type in
cd \Android\android-sdk\platform-tools

This will take you to that location. (See Image)
Now that we're in the platform-tools part of your PC in command prompt, it's the perfect time to plug in your HOX via USB to your PC, just choose 'Charge Only' for now.
Now back in CMD (command prompt) enter these values:
adb backup -apk -shared -all -f C:\backup\backup20111230.ab

Please note that this will create a folder in your C:\ called 'backup', this is where your backup will exist, also please not that you can call your backup whatever you like, it doesn't have to be 'backup20111230.ab' but I prefer to choose the days date, so mine today would be 'backup20082012.ab', 20th August 2012. Once you've typed this into CMD you'll be prompted to unlock your phones screen and continue backup (See Image)
So unlock your phone screen, choose a password (write this down somewhere as you'll need to to replace the backup onto your phone after we've put a custom ROM onto it) let it start to backup!
Now there is a common issue with the backup's freezing at

If this is the case for you, just unplug the phone, exit out of CMD, plug the phone back in, get back into cd \Android\android-sdk\platform-tools in the CMD and this time alter the backup command so that it reads:
adb backup -apk -noshared -all -f C:\backup\backup20111230.ab

All you've done now is change -shared to -noshared, let the backup continue, hopefully it'll complete!
Now that you've got your backup all safely stowed away on your PC it's time to get down to business! Unlocking your Bootloader!

Unlock the Bootloader:-
Did you install HTC Sync at the start? As now you're going to need it!
Navigate your web browser to www.htcdev.com/bootloader and click register at the top, complete the registration process, making sure that you use an email address that you have access to.
Once registered make your way back to www.htcdev.com/bootloader and sign-in.
Once signed-in at the supported devices drop down select 'All Other Supported Models' and click on Begin Unlock Bootloader.
Now before we move onto anything else we're going to want the Fastboot Files, which Cursed4Eva is kindly hosting here: Fastboot Files
Once downloaded, on your PC go to the folder C:\Android and inside that folder create a new folder called fastboot, so you'll have

Now the fastboot files that I linked to earlier come in a Zip file, unzip it to C:\Android\fastboot, this makes it easier to find it in CMD.
Now back @ htcdev, you've registered and signed in? Good, you've chosen All Other Supported Models and clicked Begin Unlock Bootloader, it'll ask you if you wish to continue, click yes, then the Legal Terms will pop up, just click that you acknowledge both terms and continue with 'Proceed to Unlock Instructions'.
Now click through the instructions until Step 8, ignore everything else.
Now turn off your HOX, now we'll turn on the HOX into the Bootloader, so press and hold down the Volume Down Button and whilst pressing the Power Button, continue to hold this down, the phone may vibrate and bleep a bit but continue to hold it down until you are greeted with a screen that has some options on it, Fastboot, Recovery etc... Now the touch screen wont work so we navigate using the volume buttons & Power Button, press down on the Power Button wile you have Fastboot selected, you'll enter Fastboot Mode with the options HBoot, Reboot, Reboot Bootloader & Power Down. You'll see above these options it'll have Fastboot written and highlighted in Red, leave the phone as it is, just plug it into the PC via USB and that highlighted 'Fastboot' will become 'Fastboot USB'.
Now open CMD, enter
cd \Android\fastboot

Now in CMD once you're in the fastboot folder enter this command:

Now on your keyboard, once you've highlighted the Identifier Token press 'Ctrl + C' to copy the Identifier Token.
Now back at the HTC Dev website, scroll down to after Step 10, where it says My Device Identifier Token:, Click in that field and either press Ctrl + V or right click and paste your Identifier Token into that field.
Now Click Submit.
You'll now be taken to a page where you'll be informed to check your emails.
Open up your emails and you'll have an email from HTC and in that email will be an attachment, this will be called Unlock_code.bin.
Download it and place it in your fastboot folder at C:\Android\fastboot.
There will also be a link in the email which will say like "Continue with Bootloader Unlock Procedure" or something like that, Click it.
Back in CMD, you should still be at C:\Android\fastboot, now type in
fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin

Please note the Capital 'U' in Unlock_token.bin, press Enter.
Now look back to your HTC One X screen, it'll have two options on it.
1. YES Unlock Bootloader
2. NO Do not Unlock Bootloader
Select Yes with the volume keys and press the power button, the phone will turn itself off and reboot,

Now that we've unlocked the bootloader we're really close to finishing the whole procedure and getting a custom ROM onto our HTC One seX!
Please note that there will be no images or screenshots from here on as a majority of this is all done on the phone handset bar the flashing of the recovery.img onto the handset.

Clockworkmod Touch Recovery Thread: Download the latest Official Recovery

So now that you've downloaded both files;
The CWM-SuperSU-v0.94.Zip file and the recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.4.0-endeavoru.img
Right click on the recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.4.0-endeavoru.img file and rename it to recovery.img, this makes it easier to work with later.
Connect your HTC One X to your USB cable and then to the PC, choose Disk Drive, next, copy and paste the CWM-SuperSU-v0.94.Zip file onto the root of the SD card for your HOX. Once that's on there, change the phones USB connection to charge only.
Open CMD, now get back into the fastboot folder in CMD, do you remember how to do this? It's C:\Android\fastboot then press Enter.
Now start the phone back up into the Bootloader, press and hold Vol Down and press Power Button, once in the Bootloader, once again, select Fastboot and then leave the phone as it is, running in Fastboot USB.
Back to CMD, type in this command:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

Press Enter. You've just flashed a custom recovery onto your HOX, Once that's finished, type 'exit' into CMD to close the CMD panel.
Back on your HTC One X, using the Volume buttons navigate down to Power Down, once the phone is off, with it still connected to the PC via USB, start it up again into the Bootloader (Vol Down + Power). Once in the Bootloader select Recovery, hit Power. You'll then load up into Clockwork Mod Recovery.
Now you can use either the touch screen or the volume buttons. Navigate to 'Install ZIP from SD Card', hit the Power Button, next select 'Choose ZIP from SD Card'. Now you'll need to scroll right to the bottom of the list to the CWM-SuperSU-v0.94.Zip you placed on the phone earlier.
Click it and it'll ask you if you want to install, select yes install, and let it do it's thing, Then select 'Go Back', Reboot System Now.
Once the phone has shut itself down and restarted, go to the Play Store / Google Market and Install Titanium Backup: Titanium Backup Root. Let it install, once that's finished, start the App on your HTC One X and it'll ask you for Super User Access, grant/accept it.
With the older versions of TiBu (Titanium Backup) You had to go to the problems section and install BusyBox but i believe that it does it automatically now (At least it did for me) So when you start up TiBu You'll see this on screen:

Making a Nandroid Backup:-
Now that you're rooted and have a custom recovery we'll make a Nandroid Backup, this is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT as it'll act as your fail safe if flashing the custom ROM goes 'Tits-Up'.

When you make a Nandroid backup you are essentially making a carbon copy of how the phone is at that point in time. It doesn't matter if it's a stock rom or a custom rom.
If you are flashing a custom rom onto a phone and it goes wrong or has bugs in it or you don't like it you can restore the Nandroid backup and turn back the clock so that the phone will be as it was when you made the Nandroid backup, as you can see, it's important to do this.
To make a Nandroid backup, turn off your handset, power up into the bootloader, go to recovery, once in recovery there will be the option Backup/Restore, choose backup, let the phone perform the backup - this may take a little time. Once it's finished, just choose restart/reboot phone.
There you have it your very first Nandroid backup!
If it makes you feel a little easier, before flashing a custom rom onto your phone you can transfer the Nandroid backup onto a PC.
Just connect your handset to a PC via USB cable, Disk Drive, then once you can get into the phone on the PC, enter the Clockworkmod folder and make a copy onto the PC of the 'backup' folder.
To restore a Nandroid backup, providing you have the Clockworkmod\backup folder on your phones SD card, enter recovery, and in the option Backup/Restore, just choose 'restore' and off it goes, you've restored the Nandroid backup.
Many people make Nandroid backups before the flash a custom rom onto their phone, even seasoned veterans do this as it's your one fail safe against a disastrous occurrence... messing your HOX up! Some people make them Monthly, Weekly and even a few make them daily!

Installing Android Revolution HD 9.2:-
We're so close to having a Custom ROM on our HTC One X, not far to go now!
Make sure you have at least 35% Battery when you do this! Preferably more, I cannot stress this enough!!!
Pop on over to Mike1986's ARHD Thread here: ARHD Thread Donate to Mike1986 if you like or Thank him as his work is brilliant!
Scroll down to the DOWNLOADS section and download Android Revolution 9.2, boot.img for 9.0.x and Super Wipe.
Next connect your phone to your PC and select Disk Drive, now copy the SuperWipe file and the ARHD 9.2 ROM onto your phones SD card at Root, no need to go any deeper.
Next take the boot.img for 9.0.x file (it's named Flash_boot_9.0.x.rar) and copy it to C:\Android, once the file is there, right click and Extract Here.
Now boot your HOX up into the Bootloader (Vol Down + Power) and then go into fastboot, connect your HOX to the PC to get Fastboot USB.
Now that you're connected, go back to C:\Android and click on the file called
install-boot-windows

In the CMD panel it'll ask you to hit any key, so just press Spacebar or whatever, it'll do it's thing, it might ask you to press any key again or it'll just finish.
Back over to your handset, Press the power button to get back into HBoot and then select Recovery.
Once Clockworkmod Touch Recovery has started once again choose the option 'Install ZIP from SD Card', then 'Choose ZIP from SD Card', now scroll down to the Superwipe ZIP, make sure you choose this and not the ARHD ROM, Anyway, choose the Superwipe script and select Yes when it asks you if you want to Wipe.
Once it's performed the wipe, select Go Back and now repeat 'Install ZIP from SD Card', then 'Choose ZIP from SD Card', this time select the ARHD ROM file.
The setup for ARHD will begin, on your handset select next, then select Agree, then next again.
You'll come across a screen that has two check boxes on it, one will say
Wipe Data Partition

Tweeks: You'll be presented with a screen of Tweeks that can be included into the flashing of the ROM, I personally choose

Click Install, It'll finish, then Reboot.
Now don't panic, the first reboot can take up to 5 Minutes to complete, this is why it's imperative to have over 35% battery life as a shut down now can be disastrous!
Once it's rebooted you just have to setup your phone like you would do if it was fresh from the box.
Restore data backup:-
Now all that's left is to restore your data that you backed up at the beginning!
Open CMD, enter

Remember mine was todays date! On your HOX screen you'll be asked to enter your password that you chose when making the backup, it'll do it's thing Et Voila!
You've restored all your lovely data, remember, the stuff you had on the phone when it was stock? Nice!

Great thread mate. I sincerely believe that it deserves to be stickies for everyone to see, because you did a very thorough and detailed Jacob that will surely be helpful to newcomers. You deserve your own praise too. I'm one of those holding back on unlocking my HOX since I'm waiting for an unofficial unlock method and contemplating if it's even worth holding on a HTC device and not just going back to my iPhone which was easier to hack and modify (imo).

I mainly choose HTC Sync as it's the only one I've used and I thought I'd only write about what I know so that way I know it's reasonably accurate.

Hi there,
As long as you have a decent grasp of the English language and can follow instructions reasonably well then installing a custom ROM isn't too difficult, I'm sure you could muddle through
.707 is that Malaysia/Indonesia?
I believe that you could install a custom ROM that would be x.xx.401.xx as you'd be unlocking the bootloader so theoretically can install any OS on the phone that you like, the region for the OTA therefore wouldn't need apply as you wouldn't get FOTA's afterwards anyway.
It might be worth asking on the Android Revolution HD thread and posting a link to this thread so that way you can get a 2nd opinion.

You should also highlight the importance of downloading the RUU for your phone before unlocking. If it's not available add a note to proceed with caution

Thanks for that, I should mention about downloading the RUU for the phone in case you want to revert back, I was going to add that into the reserved #2 post at a later date, 'How to revert back to Stock'
Yeah I'm aware that there is a lot of info out here on XDA already but like I said at the start of my OP, it's all in different places, some of it is difficult to understand and it's quite fragmented in parts and there isn't really a 'Start-to-Finish' guide out there, or at least not one that I've seen. Even then, people can still find what they need, have access to all the relevant tools but still not be able to proceed, either due to lack of English skills or understanding, intelligence etc... So I thought I'd write it up in real 'laymans terms'.
But as you say, the info's already here for those who've learnt to use the search button

Hi mate! at first, thanks for this "noob" tuturial! i think i'm going to try it later.. i have some questions i would like to know before i continue as i don't root/flash roms since my htc hero.. would be thankful if you cared to help me
i have just installed the ruu on mine with 4.0.4 and senses 4.1.
- Will i be able to make a complete rom backup of my actual rom (exactly as it is, with my configs, apps, etc. i user to do it everytime when i was flashing a new rom on my hero so i could revert if anything went wrong or i didn't like the new rom).
- if not, is there a way to reinstall the ruu or the official rom later if i decide for it so i can receive official updates? In other words, can i revert to an "original" state?
And finaly, is there anything that is not working on revolution rom?

The answer to both of your questions is essentially 'Yes'.
You'll find in my OP one section called 'Backing up your data', depending on which instructions you decide to enter will depend on what gets backed up, take a look at that section and the forum thread that I linked to from that, that'll give you an idea on what to enter into CMD.
It'll be something like

adb backup -apk -shared -all -f C:\backup\backup21082012.ab
There's a good list of the factory ROMs here, download the relevant one for your handset, RUU etc... then put the phone in fastboot USB and enter into cmd from cd \Android\fastboot

fastboot oem lock
That'll relock the bootloader, I think that's correct anyway, never done it myself, I know many others have however but yes you can revert back to how the phone is stock, bar the Bootloader saying 'Relocked' instead of 'Locked'.
You can also make a Nandroid backup (always recommended, I should add that into my guide) before flashing any new ROMs, especially when coming from stock

Before you do anything — Make a backup
Don't forget to back up your data. If you have synced the device with a Google account, then the contacts, calendar, Gmail, & select other Google-related data will not be lost and will come back after the next sync. However, you should backup anything you want to keep that is not stored on the SD card:
SMS/MMS messages,
Call Log,
Bookmarks,
Applications; use Titanium Backup or the Astro File Manager, for example,
Any application data not on the SD card.
It would also be a good idea to backup everything stored on the SD card in the rare case the SD card must be formatted to resolve any major problems.
MyBackup Root, SMS Backup & Restore, and Call Backup & Restore are all free applications that can assist with backing up your data.

Rooting the HTC Ace
WARNING: ROOTING THE HTC ACE WILL VOID THE WARRANTY.
Before you begin, if VISIONary is installed on the HTC Ace, uninstall it before continuing.
You will need ADB on the computer to root the HTC Ace and to flash the necessary files for radio S-OFF. Follow the Android SDK guide, to get the ADB shell on the computer.

Unzip the zip files and copy the contents to the same folder as adb (the /platform-tools folder within the Android SDK folder).
Connect the HTC Ace to the computer via USB.
Make sure USB debugging is enabled on the HTC Ace by checking Settings » Applications » Development » USB debugging.
On the computer, open terminal and run the following commands:
adb push busybox /data/local/tmp/
adb push gfree /data/local/tmp/
adb push hboot-eng.img /data/local/tmp/
adb push psneuter /data/local/tmp/

As it is very important that the hboot was installed correctly gfree calculates md5sums of the partition. It will calculate the following 3 checksums
md5sum #1 - checksum of partition 18 before the installation
md5sum #2 - checksum of the hboot image that should be installed
md5sum #3 - checksum of partition 18 after the installation
The messages that you what to see are either/or
md5sum #1 == md5sum #2 - the hboot image is already installed -> skipping installation
md5sum #3 == md5sum #2 - the hboot image was successfully installed -> OK!
If you get a different error message you should run for help at then DO NOT REBOOT and join #G2Root on Freenode for further help.
If gfree worked correctly continue with:
./root_psn
sync
reboot
The HTC Ace is now rooted with S-OFF, the Engineering HBoot & the ClockworkMod Recovery. Continue to the next section.
Flashing CyanogenMod
If the {{{device}}} has been rooted, unlocked, etc. through steps other than the method described above or running a custom ROM other than CyanogenMod and you are having issues flashing or booting CyanogenMod, it is recommended the {{{device}}} be returned to stock & start over with the full instructions provided above.
Method via Recovery
Download the [[Devices Overview#{{{device}}}|latest version]] of CyanogenMod.
Optional: Download the Google Apps for the device.
Place the CyanogenMod update.zip file on the root of the SD card.
Optional: Place the Google Apps .zip on the root of the SD card also.
Boot into the ClockworkMod Recovery.
Once the device boots into the ClockworkMod Recovery, use the side volume buttons to move around, and either the power button or the trackball to select.
Optional: Select backup and restore to create a backup of current installation on the {{{device}}}.
Select the option to Wipe data/factory reset.
Then select the option to Wipe cache partition.
Select Install zip from sdcard.
Select Choose zip from sdcard.
Select the CyanogenMod update.zip.
Optional: Install the Google Apps by performing steps 7 - 9 again and choosing the Google Apps update.zip.
Once the installation has finished, select +++++Go Back+++++ to get back to the main menu, and select the Reboot system now option. The {{{device}}} should now boot into CyanogenMod.
Method via ROM Manager
Launch RomManager.
Optional: Choose the first option in the app, Flash ClockworkMod Recovery to update to the latest version.
Select the Download ROM option from the main menu in the ROM Manager.
Select the CyanogenMod option, and then choose the latest version of CyanogenMod from the menu.
Optional: When you select the latest version of CyanogenMod, check the Google Apps option.
Once the ROM is finished downloading, it asks if you would like to Backup Existing ROM and Wipe Data and Cache.
If Superuser prompts for root permissions check to Remember and then Allow.
The {{{device}}} will now reboot into the recovery, wipe data and cache, and then install CyanogenMod. When it's finished installing it will reboot into CyanogenMod.

GUIDE] Downgrade from 3.13 (Sense 3.0) roms
This guide is for phones shipped with froyo and updated to the 3.x firmware! For phones shipped with gingerbread (even the lower versions) please read attn1's posts in this thread!
With the Sense 3.0 upgrade HTC patched against fre3vo, so we can no longer temproot to use misc_version on that firmware. Lucky us, a new exploit was issued @rootzwiki. This exploit was tested at #g2root (freenode) and was able to temproot a 3.13.161.3 firmware version.
The usual disclaimer applies: Everything you do is your responsibility, no one can be held accountable for the state you put yourself and/or your phone into.
If you meet troubles search for help at IRC: freenode, #g2root
make sure your phone is in 'charge only' mode and the 'fast boot' feature is turned off.
What you need:
tacoroot
misc_version NOTE: you need THAT version of misc_version. Earlier versions would not work.
flashgc for a goldcard
1.32 PD98IMG.zip
put all files in your platform-tools directory (unzip misc_version and tacoroot.sh)

adb push tacoroot.sh /data/local/tmp/tacoroot
adb push misc_version /data/local/tmp/
adb push flashgc /data/local/tmp/
adb push PD98IMG.zip /sdcard/
NOTE: the last command will take a long time
After all files are pushed you have to run tacoroot:

This command will reboot the phone to recovery. Once it is done, use vol up/power then choose 'reboot' to reboot the phone. After it boots (it will bootloop, that's expected):

this command will kick you out of adb shell, so we need to return there and see the # sign of root access, after which we can change the main version and create a goldcard:

After these commands are done, the phone should get rebooted by tacoroot. After it boots, boot to bootloader to flash the 1.32 firmware:

Once in bootloader, use the vol buttons to go to 'bootloader' and the power button to execute. The rom will flash. Enjoy!

Notes:
Please do NOT run the hack step if you are already S-OFF AND are running a custom ROM. It’s pointless, and while it won’t brick you, you can get jammed up a bit. This is for stock devices only.

Do NOT try to run this from a VM – particularly VirtualBox. You WILL get jammed up and may wind up flashing an RUU to recover, losing data in the process.
After kernel downgrade – video is lost on boot – this is okay as adb is working and can be used to finish the process. If the process fails, it can be restarted once the PC environment is corrected. When the process completes successfully, everything is restored and fully working.

Make sure you extract the hack kit to your pc maintaining the directory structure in the archive you downloaded. The docs will be in the root directory of the unarchived kit, as will the scripts. READ THE EFFEN MANUAL.
I can’t believe that so many people are asking where the effen manual is. THE EFFEN MANUAL IS IN THE EFFEN HACK KIT.
This kit should work fine on HTC Inspire and HTC Desire HD Software versions below 3.06.405.1 which require the radio/kernel downgrade before a root exploit is available.
Windows Prep:
IMPORTANT – disable all malware (Antivirus detection etc) detection before unarchiving the hack kit. Keep it off thoughout the hack kit processes. Many Windows malware detection programs report false positives, deleting or binding critical files required by the process.
IMPORTANT – Remove or disable all services and daemons you can, particulary anything Apple, blackberry, PDAnet, Microsoft Mobile, anything USB not required for this task, any resource hogs. Also disconnect all un-needed USB devices and USB HUBs.
Remove HTC Sync and drivers.
Only after completing the above steps, install the drivers contained in the Hack Kit (see the Effen Manual) BEFORE plugging in the phone.
Connect the phone to the computer via a USB port connected to the system board – not a front panel port or a hub or extention port.
Verify successful android device driver installation in device manager.
Issues during downgrade:
IMPORTANT: BEFORE SWITCHING FROM DISK DRIVE TO CHARGE ONLY MODE, ALWAYS EJECT THE SDCARD WITH PC SOFTWARE TO FLUSH WRITE BUFFERS AND AVOID CORRUPTING THE SDCARD.

And without ENG S-OFF you can't change the radio.
S-OFF is necessary for me
And btw... i don't know what you do..
But with the Hack Kit i've rooted about 15 DHDs in my circle of friends.
Some devices with problems. But after manually downgrade with RUU no problems at all.

Select backup and restore

Go to your mobile start it as Fastboot and go to recovery
You go in to Clockworkmod Recovery V5.0.2.7 from the Ace Hack Kit
On the top is the menu with + and – buttons just scrool in to advanced and press power
Select “Wipe Dalvik Cache”
Then select “Wipe Battery Stats”
Then select “And go back”
Then select “Wipe data/Factory reset”
Then select “Wipe cache Partition” (Now you have cleaned all the old staf from your mobile)
Now let’s start rebuild the HTC
Select "apply update from sdcard"
Then select "Yes - install update.zip" to confirm
Then select "install zip from sdcard"
Then select “google.zip”
Then select "Yes - install google.zip" to confirm
Then select "install zip from sdcard"
Then select "su-3.0-efgh-signed.zip"
Then select "Yes - install su-3.0-efgh-signed.zip" to confirm
Then go back to your pc for the files you have download and unzip update and copy Boot.bin to the file you created C:\HTC
o Flash boot.img trough fastboot:
o fastboot flash boot boot.img
o Reboot
• Done
• You should have now a white screan from HTC for at least 5 minutes and after will sart the new room, just let it on for a couple minutes and you will see the sucess….

And thats the point.
You do what S-OFF does through HTC-Tool.
Now u unlocked the bootloader and your warranty is gone because your device is registered now.
Why should anyone go the complicated way if there is an easy way?

Firts have 2 types of waranty, 1st the manufactors warranty. That runs off 3 years after your purchase, 2nd the software warranty... And HTC have take off that point on the warranty, now you can unlock our relock the bootloader from your HTC with out lost of your warranty... By the way that's the reason HTC created HTC devoluppers web page...
