not sure if its even possible, or maybe not yet. but with 2 galaxy s phones being out i was wondering if its possible to get a touchwiz 3.0 ui instead of sense. I actually really like the layout and design and all the little tweaks it has. Is it possible to get a complete port of the ui to the evo?
It's possible in the context of "anything is possible" but I would bet my money on it never happening.
If TouchWiz is anything like sense, it's integrated into numerous parts of the Android OS all over the place. TouchWiz is also proprietary to Samsung, like Sense is to HTC. In other words, there isn't source code for developers to "port" from. This would be a large task even if source code was available.
IMHO I would rather see someone's time spent either helping others find solutions that meet your needs that are already available or implementing an open source solution that would work on more than just the EVO.
Just my 0.02c feel free to correct me on whatever.
yeah thats what i thought :/ i just love the bottom down, style of icons, and all the menu styles
Interesting. I though most people hated/disliked TouchWiz.
It's definitely not the prettiest interface out there, but it does its job. If you like it build it, but as for me, I'll stick with vanilla Android.
Although a community based UI (above just a new launcher) that incorporated some of the features out there like weather, social networks, etc. would definitely be a welcome change, as it could be streamlined for speed optimizations.
Just my $.02.

If a dev could find a dump and port it over, that's essentially what ava did with his froyo sense rom.

well i posted a thread here, since realizing a whole rom for that ui might be to much, maybe just asking for the launcher. i know the touchwiz launcher apk works on the evo, but none of the widgets load.
is it possible to replace the launcher on my dc rom with the touchwiz one?

Maybe this is a great opportunity for you to get involved with the community and start learning about how this stuff works.
Looks like the stock ROM for the Galaxy S can be obtained here (the Vibrant)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728698
You could always start taking it apart and try to isolate the TouchWiz components and "bake" them into your own Android ROM.
Looks like there's a good place to start for cooking your own ROM here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633246
...and you'll probably want to read up on Android in general so I'd encourage you to Google up the SDK.
thought this would be a good place to post this.
TouchWiz has some nice stuff. I kinda like the launcher, and there are some kinda useful widgets. I hate the icons, and some of the other theme stuff.
I think what you want will kind exist though. Most of the widgets have as good or better equivalents in the market, and ADW launcher offers the sideways sliding app drawer, and as mentioned above we have the launcher available.
I think skinning would be the missing part to really get a nice TouchWiz feel. Someone could make an icon theme, and maybe themed versions of some market sourced widgets that have the TouchWiz look and feel.
I wanted a more AOSP rom and started working on my own and learned a ton, but then tjohnson's ROM really filled the hole better than I could, so I never released anything. If you can get into this an start breaking stuff apart, I think there are enough people out there that would want TouchWiz to make it worth while, but if you aren't up to the effort of porting, skinning would probably achieve most of what you want with a lot less effort.
after installing the apk, make sure you go to menu>settings>applications>HTC Sense and clear defaults then force stop.
Drr, there was a whole other point I forgot.
This is why I am excited about launcher Pro right now. Fede sees that a lot of people like Sense, and realized that he can really implement the great parts of Sense on his own with some effort. This have several benefits. One is giving Sense-like features to those with phones that don't come with it, and allowing people to choose what parts they do or do not want to use. We kinda already do this in custom mods and themeing, but his work will work on non-rooted phones too. Right now his focus is Sense-like widgets, but the same type of effort could be made for TouchWiz or Blur type widgets, and additionally everything could be skinned together, really giving users a great choice without having to give up much at all.

I love LauncherPro. Been using it since version 0.0.2, or whatever. I just hope that now that he is charging for the app, HTC doesn't come down on him with a cease and desist letter. He does seem to be copying the Sense UI, now with the scrollable widgets, and the setup of the widgets.

but the widgets and such have a different look and better functionality/fluidity. It is not truly based off sense UI, Any body can make something that looks similar but works differently. I supported him day one with LP+ for 2.99. Well worth it.
I've been playing with a few different ROMs lately and one thing that I keep coming back to is "why?". Realistically, I like some of the things that come with sense (the dialpad, friendstream, gallery) but I can replace those with market apps.
Is there really a reason to not have sense if you can remove the apps you don't like? I can get really good quadrant scores on both, but I've learned that doesn't necessarily mean great performance. All I really care about is if the phone feels snappy and works like I want it to.
I use launcherpro so the appdrawer and quicklaunch buttons dont bother me at all, which is the majority of what I dont like about sense. I can remove all the other apps I dont use or want, so is there a distinct advantage to using a vanilla rom over a sense one other than personal preference? I keep bouncing back from SR vanilla to Ruby and even Virtuous ROM now and all of them are very awesome. Sorry if this has been asked, but I couldnt find any clear reason why someone would want a pure vanilla ROM over something like SR3 that has most of the crappy stuff from sense removed already.
I believe it truly is just personal preference. What you like, how you want it to look, the widgets you want to use. A big plus to me with Sense was the lock screen controls. But now with ihtfp69 and getting the rotary vanilla lockscreen with music controls on it, I prefer vanilla over sense. But thats me.
I prefer vanilla over Sense also.
The more stripped bare, the better for me.

I like the vanilla, im running the sr but just tried the sr sense and i got a huge score on the q of 1478!!! Im getting around 1330 on vanilla, I like the layout of vanilla
For me the best advantage of an AOSP rom vs. a Sense/de-Sensed rom is the phone answer screen. With a sense rom I would always accidentally answer the phone when taking it out of my pocket when it was ringing. With AOSP roms the answer slider moves left/right so I never have this problem. I've also noticed that I have a lot more free memory at boot with an AOSP rom then even a de-sensed rom. The stock browser also allows many more simultaneous open windows then a sense based rom, which is limited to 4 windows total.
I just recently switched to Ruby 1.1.1 with the radio layer and bluetooth patch and have been loving it.
For me, you have a few categories.
-Sense
-Sense light (e.g. Best of both worlds)
-AOSP
-MIUI (I know this is an AOSP, but really stands out)
I love the feel off the AOSP ROMS. The dialer and contacts have larger buttons, the answer slide sideways, the messaging, etc. Like you, I use LP, so the Sense widgets are out the door anyway. I kept tasting the new sense roms because of three better continuity of appearance, however. Also, Sense handles the mms apn stuff better. But then MIUI came along. I'm not sure why it's classified as AOSP, when it is really an impressive overlay of android, much as sense is. I don't really knower what I'm talking about, but I can tell you that MIUI changed me. I feel like it is giving me the best of both worlds, and I could go on and on about the little features that make it truly unique and powerful.
Boils down to preference. Try MIUI if you haven't already. Be sure to use v0.3. The newer v0.4 has some kinks.

As a developer myself, just no in the tech field, I find it helpful to know what other want so that I can produce the best. I'm sure that most of you do this because it's something that YOU personally want and or like. I deeply appreciate the work that has gone into such wonderful ROM's and I can't wait to see more.
As for me, I've tried out RR, CM, SR, Frank, Jager, ASOP, and a few other odds and ends.
It seems to me there should be a blend. A blend between Sense and well....nonsense.
Currently, I'm on the Ultimate ASOP. This ROM has been amazing because of the ability to customize. Like every ROM, there are quirks or just small things that bother me, but it's SOOOO close to greatness, IMHO. I like a lot about a lot of ROMS but if they're lacking Sense then I miss that. If they have Sense, I miss the customizing of the Non Sense. My question is, can the two be made to be CommonSense?
What I'm talking about is a ROM that combines a little bit of the HTC Sense side with the applications and setting and customization of the Non HTC Sense ROMs. For instance, the email application in the Driod root IMHO opinion is much better then the Sense one. You can easily check multiple emails and the default background is back. What if you could have Sense, but change the lock screen to something different and be able to add different themes easily? There are several instances where the two could be combined to make CommonSense. And, if you have some ideas please share!
I guess i'm just looking for ideas from others that I can take a pitch to a Chef along with a few $$$ to make a ROM that'll do just that. Is there anyone else that thinks the same or I am the only one riding the HellaNoSense boat?
check out IncDoes AOSP. but you should have posted in q/a or general for future reference

we have great phones and we havent taken full advantage imo from what i have seen so far
i prefer a sense based rom with virtually every sense component gutted aside from dialer and contacts (and other key vital stuff). most users use launcher pro, yet most devs seem to focus their [sense] work around modified rosie. Which doesnt seem to make a ton of sense to me. im sure the launcher pro dev would allow the use of his work cooked into roms with his permission right?

actually no. LP isnt open source. thats also whay CM uses ADW rather than LP
How about a JD froyo MASH-UP! That wud b hot! You know, cause a phone that won't boot gets the best battery life
Edit: I LOVED SR vanilla, but it's a little long in the tooth... at least for now. I still have issues with AOSP stability. But I haven't flashed anything new in a month so maybe I'm full of it.

Yeap. This.
Minimalism.
Bare bones, minimal special effects, no clutter.
Basically a tiling WM or Openbox layout with basic text menus or no menus with touch commands.
Hopefully I'll be able to get into cooking whenever I get my machine in order. I've been wanting to actually contribute to some coding/hacking projects but I've never found anything of interest that would motivate me... until now :3

FYI: the new Sense lets you multi select in the mail widget...Desire HD/Z
I love sense but need a landscape homescreen! I wish rosie could do this because adw and LP drive me nuts! Currently ruining SR. 3.3.3 but will make the switch when I find something that suits my needs...the reason...I frequently use a car dock and I'm on the road for at least2 hours a day

I'm still hoping for a webOS port even though that's probably not gonna happen ever

Want. I just wish android took more looks from webOS. It is so beautiful!
The look & feel of the new Sense UI (The Desire Z ROM specifically), the fastest and most optimized speed possible, working camera w/ 720p video (only thing wrong with Desire Z ROM, imo), lots of free memory, clear of all the bloatware apps, aaaaaaaaaaaaand.... Ability to quickly change theme settings (transparency, selection colors, etc).
Oh, and great dev support.

My perfect rom would be:
Sense based Vanilla rom
htc keyboard
htc camera
htc gallery
htc contacts
either HTC facebook or contacts syncable with market facebook.
emmc working properly
adw built in
customizations avalable in cyanogen's latest rom
power widget built in to notification pull down.
figure out how to change the answer/silence to tabs
reboot option in power menu
6 signal bars
htc battery icon with %
keep the colored sense settings menu icons.
tab or rotary music controls (hidden when not in use)
thats all i can think of.
Having tried just about every ROM out there (and a couple of them a number of times) I think the problem I run into is there are little things here and there that I like about each.
All of our tastes are different, thus we like different things. Some people like the circle battery mod, some people like the rotary lock screen, etc etc...
What would be really cool is if there were a way to easily choose the specific mods you wanted... kinda like picking out options on a new car.
Ultimately, I think the answer is a dev that is willing to build you a custom ROM to your exact specifications. Of course, this would come with a price tag, but hey, it's exactly what you wanted (and it would be worth it IMO... any takers LOL).
In the meantime, I'm trying to figure out how to get what it is that I want and experiment. It's been fun, frustrating at times, and I still don't have everything I like, but at least we have lots of options to choose from, and I'm learning something new in the process
Is it not possible to build a Rom with a bunch of on off switches that allow you to select sense or no sense , or give you the option for circle battery vs stock ....
IMO.... this would be the ULTIMATE Rom .....

@ The OP: Maybe you should initiate a poll.
There are some things from Sense that I find myself missing. I am hoping that the masses can assist in getting my tweaking right. The reason I am really excited about it is the speed. It seems leaps and bounds faster than any Sense rom I have run.
I am currently running version v.0.12.11.1.
City ID: I assume this is what gives me the City and State info when a call comes through.
LauncherPro. I can't deal with the way MIUI does the home screens, and Launcher Pro seems to fit the bill for the most part.
Weather: I am totally in love with the weather widget in the clock on sense, how it gives you the weather effects over your home screen. Is there a way to get this without the clock? I am going for a clean home screen but would like that weather.
Facebook contacts:Whenever I tell facebook to connect with my contacts, and only with ones already in my phone book, it still adds people. I want it to import only with contacts already in my list. Is there a way to get this to work right?
The other MIUI features I guess are not a huge deal to me. The lock screen is pretty awesome, it comes with the FM radio app for my incredible which is great. I really hate not having the app drawer. Overall the speed is what got me.
Is there a fast sense rom out there I should use instead? I assume I could mod things like the dialer and lock screen if I wanted right?
Any opinions and suggestions are appreciated and welcomed. I just can't sit still on a rom!

I have used it before, but it just seems sluggish compared to something like MIUI. Could this be true?
Forgive the noobish questions, but are there different kernels you can run with a rom for more speed?
I believe MIUI is somewhat of an AOSP based ROM (someone correct me if I'm wrong) and Sense based ROMs will always feel slightly slower than those.
HeyItsLou has a few kernels that he made that work well with his ROMs try 'em out
Hey guys i just curious about what people want from a rom.Devs welcome
in my opinion : im good with 3.0 sense without bloatware i want cyanogen high brightness flashlight (i couldnt find any sense roms got this why? ) and an rom addon to overclock and to change governor(like an app or under settings )
that's my thoughts about a dream rom
i think its very important to participate cuz devs can understand what people want from a rom
Thank you !
And im using virtous unity 2.39
The answers to this post will be as different as what people think the best ROM actually is. The best answer is variety. We need some of each.
For me:
Simple but pleasing transitions. (I like 3D cube in MIUI)
All important apps accessible with as few button clicks as possible.
A decent keyboard. (I'll be reviewing my favorite soon) (I did like the HTC one when I used Sense.)
I'm happy with stock speed.
I'm happy with Camera/video camera app. (MIUI)
Easy to change theme for when I fancy a change.
It must include a file manager.
I prefer not to have Sense. I enjoyed it but prefer not to have it at the moment.
As few as possible included apps. (We can install them separately if necessary.)
As soon as you show it to a female - she gives you her number.
A nice and classic boot animation. No fancy stuff.
I enjoy Sense, both 3.0 and 3.5 so any will do. Classic themes.
Classic sounds. I actually like stock very much, but with tweaks and oc.
Both ARHD and Runny1.4 fullfill this, except Runny's boot screen. Although awesome, it's not what i'm looking for.
A Rom for me must be uncluttered, stable, quick, and customisable. ARHD springs to mind lol.

It really is not gonna matter to be honest. As stated above you will get a different answer from everyone. Also I hate to tell you this but these rims are not built for the user. They are built for the Dev and then he decides to share. For far too long people have forgoten what is done here on XDA. This is not a place to come and get a cool 100%working Rom. These roms will always have beta tags as they are all hacked software to see if the Dev can get it to work and then they share for others to learn. This is not a place to make your phone cool. This is a place where you get a Rom you like and then dig in to help fix any problems that come up. And no that doesn't mean by posting "this doesn't work" it means by digging in and finding the bug with all the tools XDA gives you. With the entry of android I think a lot of people have forgotten why we are here and what this site is about.
