Okay, I am going to reformat my computer today and I am thinking about dual booting it with the latest Ubuntu. Would this get me started on the right path to start developing and compiling my own roms and what not? Everything I google seems to be pretty ambiguous and not much help. Thanks in advance...
In my opinion Dual booting with Ubuntu is the way to go. If you are planning to use this kitchen http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633246 be careful since there are reports of it not working on the latest Ubuntu. I tried it on 10.10 and it worked for a bit then stopped when I applied some updates. I think it has something to do with dropping Java.
I run Win7 on my primary, Ubuntu latest on an external drive and I run a Oracle VM Virtualbox with Ubuntu 9.10 which the kitchen runs on well.

Thanks! I am downloading Ubuntu 10.04 as I also read that 10.10 was borked for some reason. Thanks for the kitchen link, I am just trying to get my feet wet here. I am comfortable hacking on the phones and using ADB, this just seemed the next logical step.

i have two dual boot computers with ubuntu 10.10....both have kitchens set up and both work fine. i installed ubuntu on my lappy first just to test it to make sure it worked without messing anything up since all my important stuff is on my desktop. then after that i did it on my desktop, easy as pie and i haven't booted back into windows in over a week. don't know that i'll go back now, few of my programs won't work in ubuntu and i'm having trouble with wine but theres an alternative to almost everything.

Would you be willing to make the VM available as an appliance?

Hi
recently, i decided it was time to wipe my computer clean and do a fresh install (you know, its like flashing roms, sometimes fresh is better) so i reinstall win 7 ultimate x64 and for the life of me, i cannot get adb to recognize my g2 with cm7 rc1... ive searched through several threads on installing the proper drivers, installed the most recent version of htc sync, latest android sdk, and nothing... its not such a big deal, but i would like to flash to the final of cm 7, but i dont like a lot of the fluff in cm7 (adw, etc) and find it easier to remove and change things around through adb.
thanks in advance
Did you use the installer to install the android sdk? I had issues as well with that one. Removed it and just extracted the .zip package, after that it worked fine.
This REALLY is a tricky one. In the past I've had luck installing both the HTC sync software, and PDANet. Between those two all the drivers seem to work for me in Win 7 64bit.
Why not just use a file manager like 7zip to remove/add the things you want prior to flashing. Or do you just like doing things the hard way?

Unless it's specifically a problem with Ultimate, there's no reason it won't work. I run Win 7 Home Premium x64 at home and the steps I said work for me.
I run 7 ultimate 64bit and adb works fine for me.
I used the pdanet drivers.
Flash with rom manager and then install zip from card..the adwmod zip that is..take it out for you

I have to agree with everyone else on this. I'm running Windoze 7 X64 and adb works just fine. I also have Ubuntu 10.10 64bit and Sabayon 64bit on my HDD (yay multiboot!) and neither of them have issues either.

i use winrar to change files around before i flash it, but lately ive been having problems with the edited rom (i.e. install fails, boot looping even after a data/cache wipe, etc) i just wanted to try a different route this go around
You could try another usb cord, and make sure everything is installed under admin, and the way I got my drivers I edit the driver file and added the info for G2 (saw it in tmobile forum) and also I have no problem with win 7 x64 aswell... and I agree I don't like all the extra puff and bluff oin cm7
well, i havent been able to get a wired adb to connect, but i have gotten it to work with wirelessadb and i am now rockin a modified cm 7 final
Guys,
I recently purchased my phone from someone already rooted and with Rogue recovery 1.10 on it. Today I had to recover from a weird screen lock loop and nothing would get me out of it except loading a recovery rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1272585&highlight=service+loop
After loading this rom, my recovery changed to clockwork and now won't recognize any of my sd cards. I can boot up the phone fine now at least though, but I would like to flash another Rom.
I have Root explorer installed so I can go that route. Heimdall will work on my pc but not the gui frontend.
So, I was wondering if anyone can help me or guide me to a link to show me how to flash a new recovery from linux, Root Explorer, or Heimdall?
Has anyone had an issue with clockworkmod not seeing their sd card? I can see it fine from any file explorer installed on the phone.
Thanks.
Man... you got that info from the bad old days when CWM didn't like your internal SD card. So, here's what you do:
EK02 just officially came out, and it's pretty stable so far. You want to use Heimdall to flash a kernel that has the latest CWM and EK02. I suggest the latest Rogue EK02. Download that, and unzip it somewhere. There's a file named zImage, which is your kernel. If you have heimdall installed:
Code:
heimdall flash --kernel zImage
That will not only install the latest EK02 kernel, but the latest CWM that works with your internal SD card. After that, I suggest flashing the EK02 modem.
From there, you should be fine doing whatever other MOD/ROM flashing you want from the internal SD card without without worrying about mismatches between the kernel and the modem. You can do the modem with heimdall too, but I figured it's easier just to use CWM, and the fastest path to CWM, is a kernel with it packed in.
Warning: They've remapped most of the softkeys in CWM. Select is the search button, back is the back button, moving to the next item is the menu button. I didn't check the home button.
Edit: I just noticed you didn't say 'internal' sdcard. Do this anyway. If the latest stuff can't see your SD cards, I'm not sure what else you can do.
Heimdall....
trifthen..
Thanks for your reply.. Yes, I have not been flashing for a long while but am getting bakc in the game. Good info you gave me.
There's more to my situation that I didn't mention. While trying to fix this issue I also found Heimdall. But I have been looking for a version that will work with Ubuntu Lucid (which is what I have installed) to no avail. Here is what I have found:
Heimdall:
v. 1.3: the Deb will not work at all w Lucid. Dependency problems.
v. 1.2: same thing as above.
v. 1.1: I found a PPA with the command line version which works, but the frontend to 1.1 does not work.
I contacted the dev and am waiting to hear back.
I imagine it will be a nightmare to do this via command line with Heimdall.
It seems when I find a tool to fix this, another obstacle stands in my way. Im not giving up though...
So, I might have to borrow a windows pc or re-install windows in this one....Or dual boot a version of Linux that works with heimdall. Which version of Ubuntu will work for sure with it?
What a pain.

I'm running Maverick, which itself is pretty old. I installed the 1.3.1 version just fine. Lucid? That's a good question.
I think it's time you upgrade, bucko.
Though, if you want to avoid Unity, you can just go to Maverick, or think about Mint. I'm going to be upgrading soon... there's a few tools I want to use that are too new for Maverick.
Yeah, there's a whole lot of candy in Oneiric Ocelot but Im hearing its pretty stable. You just have to get used to the interface. We'll see. I don't really like Unity too much but maybe a workaround can be found.
I like some of the features they implemented in Oneiric though.
I ended up installing 11.10 Oneiric in a VM. Im downloading the files needed now. Ill post back results.
Ok, I am getting an error from Heimdall:
"failed to detect compatible device"
My phone is in download mode and connected with a good cable. I have switched cables to no avail.
Another obstacle.. damn!
Im still researching this.

Yea, but I thought that they finally did away with that ability..
I tried booting windows but was not able to install samsung kies for the drivers. I get all kinds of registration errors. Very flakey software...
So, the phone could not be detected in Windows because kies installs the drivers.
If anyone knows how to install those drivers manually, please let me know.
I decided to try heimdall again but this time via the command line. Same thing, can't detect the phone. Error is:
"Failed to detect compatible device"
The rom I had originally installed to get out of the device lock loop was:
Kernel: 2.635.7
Build: Gingerbread EG30
Baseband; S:0710-10.s.EG31
Could that have something to do with it?
Thanks..
Edit:
The only way I have been able to flash anything since the loop was to use this procedure:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1272585&highlight=signal+loop
(the CWM restore procedure)
Are there any roms that you guys can recommend for me that I can flash in this way? Thanks.
Well I got it flashed. All of a sudden the version of CMW that wasnt working saw my sd card on one of the reboots. Go figure.
I just hope that there isn't anything wrong with my phone hardware wise...
Thanks for the replies and help. My nightmare is over.. for now lol.

Wow. Glad you got that sorted out.
I'm not entirely sure why you were having trouble with Heimdall, but it might have something to do with trying to use it from a VM. There may also be some setup steps you missed after installing it. I'm guessing there's a config file somewhere so it knows device configs or something. You probably want to get that working eventually in case of emergency.
In any case, you should be fine with CWM from now on.

I've been trying to root my kindle for several days but to no avail. Whenever i use KFU, and no matter what i do. I get Adb status offlline and unknown boot mode. I've manually installed the drivers at least a few dozen times. I've reset my kindle to factory defaults. I've turned it off and on many times. Nothing seems to work. It just seems like every device i touch breaks. Same thing with my computer. Overclocked it, and it died the next day. HELP ME PLEASE, I'M AT MY WITS END
Maybe it's time to change your handle...perhaps?
What? Too soon?
Anyway, Windows drivers are a REAL pain. You could keep fighting with Windows and hope for the best, or you could step it up and learn how it's really done. I'm talking about using the command line...in Linux.
OH NOES! NOT THE "L" WORD!
It's not that hard, really. You just have to read a little to learn what's going on (which you probably should have done anyway).
Anyway, start here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23747567
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25730650
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26435498
Read through all of it first and get a good idea of what's going on and what to do.
And when you're ready:

don't be skerd
can i root 6.3.1 with this, or just older versions
YES, you CAN!
Sorry, couldn't help it.
so what version of linux do you recommend?
I use Ubuntu 11.10 but 12.4 works just as well.
and thankssss sooooo much dude, i almost went ballistic
oh and any tips on installing it? cd or installer. My rig right now has windows 8 and windows . can i triple boot ubuntu with windows 8 and 7?
Whatever suits your needs. Typically I tell people to go the LiveUSB route w/800+ MB persistence if you plan on using my script. But either will work just fine.
thanks for helping me root my kindle, i got it to work through sweat and tears.
Windows. The place where everything is not as good.
I just got my GS3 after my Evo 4G LTE malfunctioned. All the methods I found are for windows or ICS.. is there a way I can accomplish this with Mac or Ubuntu live cd? The heimdall method I did find seems to not work either so im unsure how to proceed. Thanks in advance
Well, if heimdall didn't work, I'd personally recommend you go steal a friend's pc for 5 minutes. You 'could' do it on a linux cd, but you'd have to install the android sdk, drivers, etc, and on linux its a pain, cuz of all the edits, then need wine to run odin. But you could do that method, or use windows in a vm and don't activate, then do it the same way.
