I want to change my SD card to a bigger one, but want to keep all the apps I've installed to the EXT partition. What's the easiest way to do that?
Also, I want to create a new EXT partition bigger than my previous 512MB one in anticipation of installing a Sense HD ROM. I used ROM Manager last time which was really easy but I seem to remember it only did partitions up to 512MB, and ideally I want a 1024MB one. What's the easiest way to do this? I have Clockwork recovery installed.
Thanks.

Use GParted Live CD, it's easy...just burn the .iso to a CD, boot it up, probably forcevideo to 1024 x 768 VESA and then create your fat32 followed by ext3.
To keep your SD card contents, just copy & paste the contents of the old SD to your desktop, then copy & paste to the new SD.
To restore all your apps, use something like Titanium Backup to backup before and restore after you partition your new card.

I know this must sound like a super-noob question, but there's a simple reason for that : it is from one.
I have run out of space on my 8 GB card so I am thinking of upgrading to a bigger card. Here are my questions:
1) If App2SD+ is there on the ROM, does the phone ask you where to install the app or it goes automagically into EXT partition?
2) I want to make a bigger partition in a bigger card and will do it via ROM Manager. Do I just copy the contents of the older card and paste it onto newer and everything will work fine?
Please answer, my life depends on it.

I just upgraded from 8 to 16 myself. 1 : automatically, 2: yes that worked for me
best thing is to pre partition the card before putting it in your phone, do a nandroid backup with your old card in, put the new one in and restore, if im not mistaken this deals with the ext partition files and then just copy all the files onto the fat32 partition from your old card
not worked for me ,I was copy to PC old cadr, have nandroid but I have A2SD+ ext part
& problems ..stock with HTC white logo ,after that I make full wipe/factory reset
& after that instal the LeeDroid rom /put again ROM manager & make ext 3 partition/
after that Titanium backup & Desire functionality was back again
hi there i have auraxtsense rom and and i have an old sd card with app2sd i bought a new card for my desire 8gb class6, and my phone stuck on htc logo screen when i put new card inside
As said above you must re-partition your new card first!
I have just done this yesterday so this is what I did:
1. Nandroid backup
2. Create EXT partition on new card with G-parted Live
3. Copy contents of old SD card to the new one (just the FAT partition visible in windows etc)
4. Put the new SD card in the phone and boot into recovery
5. Restore nandroid backup (copies all the apps back onto the EXT partition)
6. Reboot!
I can't see how you could have any problems by doing what I did. The phone will not have any problems as all the old files are exactly as they were.

how to create ext partition with gparted?
You must first resize the FAT partition and then create a new EXT partition in the newly created space.
This may be helpful as there are some pictures:

Hope that helps.

So the Nandroid backup is not saved on to the SD Card?
EDIT: Ignore this. Wanted to know if it was on the FAT or ext3. I'm guessing on the FAT so nandroid backups would be included in the transfer.
What is the best tool for copy the entire contents of a memory card? I know Windows is a bit funny, stops the whole process if it finds an error, for example
Yes if you copy the files over before the nandroid then the nandroid backup is included.
TBH I just used windows to copy them all and had no problems.

One question - can the ext partitions have different sizes when restoring with nandroid?
Example - I have 1 GB ext on old card and now I'd like to have 2 GB?

Don't go larger then 1.5GB on a ext partition. Nandroid restore doesn't mind if the partition size changed, until the restored size is smaller then the new capacity.

I didn't say you can't, I stated that it's not recommended by the community to go more then 1.5GB. It was in all a2sd how-to's I've seen, has to be something about errors with the Market and app installing.
From what I understand the only advantages to APP2SD+ is that you can plug you can mount your card via USB and use your apps, and widgets can be installed on the SD.

This doesn't seem worth it for all the work reformatting another partition. If your card is upgraded to a bigger size why not use the normal method of installing apps on your SD? Why bother to partition with Ext+ as well?

I didn't quote your post
Hi,
In the next few days, I will receive a new 8GB SD for my HTC Desire. But sice I'm using A2SD+, I'm wondering how I could migrate all the data + partitions to the news card? I'm aware I have to partition my new card first, but how is it possible to duplicate and copy the contents to my new card? I'm mainly concerned about the data on the 2nd partition, where all my apps are installed...
1.Do a nandroid backup of the existing rom with old card
2.Partition the new sdcard
3.Restore nandroid with the new sdcard
Nandroid will backup and restore the sd-ext partition also.
I would use gparted.
plug both sdcards in your PC
delete the partition on your new sdcard
copy both partitions over from your old sdcard
resize fat partition to fill the free space if your new sdcard is bigger
this way is quicker and easier in my opinion.
gparted is included in the ubuntu livecd if you've got one lying round. if not you can get a gparted live cd com the internets.

imo its easer just to do a nandroid, put the new sd card in and use the advanced restore to restore the ext
thanks for the replies. So to partition, should I use the recovery to partition or can I use my computer (mac os x), since it's a linux partition that I need.
I didn't know that nandroid backup also backups my apps on the 2nd partition?
Is it also possible to use Titanium backup?

probably is, but i use linux on my desktop so its no hassle for me...
last time i did a nandroid of my ext partition i lost everything else on the partition (I use it for extra sdcard space and i've got debian installed there also.) the apps were saved but it didnt backup anything else on the ext partition, but i suppose this isnt a problem for most people.
I can only assume this has been asked and answered, but I have searched and not been able to fine a suitable post yet...
I want to find a guide to format and partition my (16GB in my case) SD card in the best way for the current/future Desire ROMs

You can use Windows to format the sd card to Fat32, after which you can then use Rom Manager (download from market) to create a ext partition (it will shrink the Fat32 partition to make room for the ext partition)
Alternatively, you can do it all in linux and it's pretty straight forward.
For example, Ubuntu (you can download a live version of ubuntu which you can burn to cd or copy to a bootable usb stick) can read the sd card (I just connect the phone whilst in clockworkmod recovery, select mount usb, and voila) and then you can use 'Disk Utility' located in the administrative tools area of Ubuntu to delete the stock partition that comes with most pre-formatted memory cards, create a Fat32 partition (Eg: 15GB) and then create an ext4 partition with the remaining space.
Using Linux is handy for backing up the contents of your ext partition - particularly useful when upgrading from a smaller sd card to a larger one but wanting to keep all your data.
I'm not the greatest at writing instructions and I have no idea if any of the above helps you in any way, but I hope it does!
I would use ROM Manager, but the Max partition size seems to be 512 and i want to make a 2GB partition. I am also unsure of whether the EXT partition (is EXT 3 or EXT4 best) should be primary or secondary, and will the Desire automatically start putting APPs there?
...and and what point do I turn the card back into a Goldcard, if at all necessary?

1) Gparted is the best partition tool ;-) It can be used as a live CD - which can be booted in virtual box.
2) You'll never need a goldcard, unless you want to go back to stock RUU (ie to send your phone back to get fixed).
3) EXT4 Primary partition
4) The desire will put apps there if the rom has Apps2sd enabled. Most roms these days do, but some require you to install the script yourself. 2gb seems a lot for just apps though.
Simple is better.
I myself have an 8gb sd card and used rom manager to partition it. I did not format my sd card beforehand, just took out the card from the package and put it into my phone.
Checking my appbrain list, i currently have 132 apps with a total size of 344MB.
Using the app Quick System Info:
A2SD storage-- Total: 458MB, Free: 110 MB
Internal storage-- Total: 148MB, Free:63.34 MB
I personally think 512 MB partition is more than enough.

Yeah, I'd agree with this. I had a 512MB partition - extended it using gparted to 1GB but it really was a pointless activity as I was nowhere near using the 512MB in the first place
Oh well - future proof I guess!
@ OP... What would you need 2GB for? Seems, well, excessive...
BTW, the latest clockworkmod supports partitioning directly in the recovery menu and I believe it will give you the size you want.
Hello Guys
Just received a new sd card for my desire but after searching the net how to copy all the content from my old sd card I couldnt find anything Im looking for which is why im making this topic.
Anyway I have an 8gb card with 1gb ext3, swap0, and willing to upgrade to 16gb ext4, do I just make the nand backup + ext and then restore it? or it wont restore because of the ext3 and ext4 ?
Regards
C.
ps. dalvik is also moved to sd card
ps2. ive accessed the OLD ext partition on my windows pc using the ext2read program and found 3 folders there, app, app=private and dalvik, so do I just copy those onto the new sd + all the files from fat32 partition onto the new one and will that work?
Hi,
Yes,
Imo could Linux do these tasks better but your option will do it also.
First make a nand backup and than cope the fat stuff to the new card and after that put the ext folders in your new ext partition.
Should work, be sure the kernel of your rom supports ext4
Kind regards

LINK THERE TO A REALLY GOOD EXT4 ALIGNMENT ZIP
Just create your partition as normal then flash the zip from recovery

no idea what this is
Ive copied all the fat32 files and then restored the sd-ext and seems to be working, had few fcs so far but when I will have more time I will reinstall everything
Htc Desire
I think its tough task for me
No its not. Simple. Backup nandroid + ext, put new card in, format to fat32 + ext, nandroid restore. Copy old card fat32 contents to new fat32. Done.

When upgrading sdcard I used PC software to backup whole partitons and then restore them to new sdcard. That was very succesful. I hope this will help)
I want to set up DarkTremor A2SD ...
Is there a way to resize my FAT partition non-destructively and add an ext3?
If not (which is probably the case) -- what is the best way to backup my FAT part on Mac? I was going to just create a DMG with Disk Utility, then restore the image after partitioning the SD card. Will this preserve my .android-secure and permissions and all that?
Thanks!
You are right indeed when adding ext 3 theres no way to avoid a wipe.. Unfortunately I'm not a mac user but to back up my sd all I did was create a new folder titled SD BACKUP to my pc and literally just dragged and dropped to ensure every file was there, then once I partitioned to ext 3 I just plugged right back in and enabled USB mount, dragged and dropped back to the SD for the final time and presto!
