Powermat now at Best Buy - EVO 4G Accessories

My local Best Buy has Powermats for the Evo out now. They have the battery door by itself for $35 and a set that comes with a single width mat and battery cover for $60. I didn't get one because I use a case but I thought I would share because I know some of you were excited to get one.

Yep confirmed 59.99.

you know the stock evo comes with the lens protected. The lens is down inside the phone and has a protective window (which everyone keeps calling a lens) that it looks through.
This case appears to have some added bulk to keep the WINDOW off surfaces.

I love mine. I'm not a fan of cases, although it wouldn't be too difficult to hack up a silicon or tpu case to make it fit. I just appreciate not having wires to use anymore.

I picked up a powermat last night for my evo.
It seems to work pretty well, the fit is good, and only adds about 1 mm to the thickness of the battery door. The sprint silicone case fits over it with no modifications needed.
The mat is only fully powered when it detects a device to charge. It has a single magnet for alignment, and is easy to center on the pad as needed. There is also audible feedback when the phone is detected and the power is turned on.
It will charge through the standard sprint silicone case, but the alignment is not as easy, and I didn't try to check if the charging rate was changed by the extra case.
The compass in the phone seems to still work with a slight wobble to "north", while turning the phone 360 deg. The magnetic field strength reading is boosted to over 60/48ths , but calibrating the magnometer seems to allow compass use.

This is the same price as on the powermat website and you don't have to pay tax if you buy directly or shipping if you choose ground UPS. Wouldn't buying from best buy mean you're paying tax?
I'd just put it on my amex and if anything happened, they'd cover it.
They don't seem to sell it via the BestBuy website, can't even find it there.
Plus, doesn't Best Buy charge a restocking fee. The powermat folks seem to give a full refund in 30 days. Good way to try it out and see if it's worthwhile without the restocking fee.
i have one question about using a powermat itself. IF you plug this into the powermat or lay it down on the strip, whatever, how do you sync with your PC? You still have to hardwire to your desktop don't you? Unless you're always using Google services?

Nope, you're right. No restocking fee implictly quoted in their main refund/return policy. Still have to pay tax though.
And, how do you sync the device with your desktop? If you're running bluetooth all the time, it will eat your battery, if you have to hardwire in, kind of makes the powermat irrelevant.

I saw this the other day too when wandering the mobile department. I didn't have a chance to read too carefully into it, but just want to confirm it is still safe to charge via the regular ac adapter/car charger too, right?

Anyone know if the cover would work with a touchstone charger? I guess I'm just too lazy to do the touchstone mod myself and it seems like it might work. Sorry for the dumb question

With the power mat, does it come with a battery and if so whats the mah?

No the only thing you are replacing is the battery cover which is used with the mat.
Essentially the battery cover has the magnet and induction charging built into it. That is why there is the little connector on the bottom. Essentially it used the induction cover as the charger to charge the batter through the normal usb connection. Hope this clears up all the confusion and mystery surrounding this. I picked one up myself and I do like it. I only use the leather pouch from HTC which was able to stretch to fit the extra peice on the bottom.

New review:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMsOp0EI6YA .
The reviewer says the the new powermat battery door is flush with the camera lens [protector glass].
If this was true, this battery door is going to make the camera lens even more prone to scratching.

Don't see why you're all crying about the camera "lens"...if it's that big of a deal, put a bulky, useless cover over the damn thing. Otherwise, quit your complaining (or stop being so abusive).
Picked one up yesterday (actually two, but that's another story). LOVE LOVE LOVE that the back door is only slightly thicker..can't even notice it. The "dongle" sticking out is no biggie for me and actually, kind of a nice addition...easier to find "up" and easier to hold the phone in landscape.
It charges about the same speed as my car charger...don't know what the amperage is on it, but it IS slower than my wall outlet.
Anyway, rather than waiting for shipping (best buy didn't have any single mats) I ended up buying another EVO set (door and pad) so I can leave one at work. Looks like I'll be able to pull the setup off the door and stick it on my Overdrive, though

Does anyone know if it will still charge if using a case like seidio active?
I don't think the bottom part will be a problem and it should still work with the holster.
Anyone tried it?

I picked up my Powermat this past Sunday and I LOVE IT!
I tried my nice cheap-ie holster from eBay ($3.50), naked, phone faces outward. With the powermat backing installed it DOES NOT fit. It is slightly thicker due to the magnet in the base.
My main motivation for the purchase was obviously to use it wirelessly, which is just amazing (loved it on the Pre, but I think I like powermat better... now if they could just make it available for the PS3 controllers lol), the ulterior motive was to get it so that the camera lens was not touching any flat surface I put it on..... and it doesn't! granted it's only like one millimeter, but still thats more than enough assurance for me!

Seconded... The little dongle is supported by my little finger just a tad which makes it just a tad easier to hold in landscape.
I thought that was going to be a major no-go for me, but I like it. And it's easy enough to unplug it to allow it to be plugged into the computer.
I don't know if its because of the rom I'm using (airborne 3.1), or because of how the powermat is alleged to charge, but I'm getting A TON better battery life since I installed both airborne 3.1 and the powermat.

I have tried this and was not happy with the way the case was stretched at the bottom. If anyone wants to see pictures I can try to accommodate and snag some. Also tried out a Otterbox case (no go) and Seidio hip case (tight fit). Some may accept the power bridging powermat has decided to use but I plan to return it for now. I really wish powermat would have designed internal cabling instead. If they ever offer that revision I am down!

Samsung Captivate Extended Battery

I work directly with China's largest manufacturer of Extended batteries. They finished the AT&T Samsung Vibrant for T-Mobile and I've sold a bunch already with 100% feedback on Ebay. Userid is kevinjmoore. Unfortunately, they don't want to make a mold for the Captivate because they don't think there is enough demand in the USA to warrant it. To prove them wrong, I am trying to generate interest so that I can pay for the door mold charge and have them produce a bunch. The battery is the same as the Vibrant so that part is done. It is a 2800maH, which is nearly double the capacity and does last more than twice as long as stock--I know, I have the phone. Please email me at kevinjmoore at gmail dot com to get more details and help us get this rolling. I've reviewed all the forums out there and battery life is definitely one of the top issues. The rubberized door feel is awesome and it doesn't add a bunch of thickness to the phone like you think it might. Total production time is 20-25 days. My price will be at most $40 incl shipping. I may bring it down if demand is high enough. I will need a minimum of 50% fully refundable deposit. If I don't get enough demand in 30 days, I'll refund completely (less $0.30 Paypal fee). Please forward this, tweet this, facebook this and let's get this thing done My communication and customer service is second to none. We are building a US based website that will be up in 2 weeks detailing the over 35 other phones/extended batteries and hundreds of accessories (including IPAD and IPHONE) that we carry.
I found this pic on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Samsung-Vibrant...448289815?pt=US_Batteries&hash=item1e5f52f017
There is no way I would do that to my captivate. Just make a battery that fits in the factory space that has a 25% more power and i would be happy.

That looks fugly as hell... I would get 2 extra OEMs w/ desktop charger instead...
Doesn't look horrid for the Vibrant. But the Captivate? Yea.. look like a damn camel hump or a hemorrhoid on the back of my phone. No thanks.
I had one on my Dream and other than being somewhat a nuisance for carrying cases/belt clips it was well worth it. In fact it worked so well I sold it to my buddy who had a dream when I switched to the captivate. He loves the damn thing cause he can use his phone all day long now without having to charge it.
I am a someone who prefers function over cosmetics. If it works better but is uglier wtf cares? When was the last time you looked at the back of your phone and was like wow- that sure is purdy You don't interact with the back of your phone. Also with the back being rubberized I would find it easier to rest on my shoulder during long tech calls with clients as I dont use bluetooth headsets. Just this morning I almost dropped my cap as it slipped from my hand getting out of the car- luckily I caught it, but still with the rubber this is less likely to happen. Again.. function over form all day all long.
I carry mine in my pocket. I like the captivate because it's thin. If I need to I'll carry spare battery before I double the thickness of the phone...I'm just sayin'
Mike
if i had the battery i could make the dies. are you looking to make a plastic cover or stamp an aluminum one?
anyway it would be nice to have on hand for trips or events where i dont know how long i will go without a charger. i dont think i would walk around with that in my pocket but it would be nice to have one available for occasional use and there are plenty of people that have come around here complaining about horrid battery life. i find the battery life quite good and in an every day environment you can always plan around it but obviously some people want more or just like to complain.
If I traveled, I would be all over this. Unfortunately, the $9 2-pack of batteries with wall charger on eBay just doesn't makes this as economical when I can just reach over and pop in a fresh battery and have the old one start charging.
It adds a "WHOPPING" 6 mm to the phone (not even 1/4"). I gave it to my friend to hold and he said he actually liked the feel better with the door that way. It felt more stable and fit perfectly to how you cradle your phone. The door is better than stock and fits easily in your pocket. It is NOT bulky at all. To not have to charge your phone every 7 or 8 hours if you are a moderate to heavy user is so worth it. I can't imagine not having it or carrying around 2 or 3 batteries all the time.
It is 6mm extra on an 11 mm phone (about 50% thicker for double capacity). It's a no-brainer.
i think you'd sell them but i think this might not be the right forum for it, the less than enthused response doesn't mean that people who travel aren't looking for something like this, it just means that we dont have that many people on the forum looking for this. are you getting feedback on your ebay store asking for it?

Correct me if I am wrong but...
Isn't our metal back plate aid in reception? I thought the antenna was in direct contact with the back plate. Seems to me that a big piece of plastic holding in a big battery would give us signal loss...

no it appears to be grounded not an antenna but i could be wrong i dont know much about cell antenna design. there are two contacts and one goes to the metal chassis indirectly through a shiny plating on the back of the plastic housing. the other goes to the board but i didn't trace it to tell if it went to the points that contact the chassis and plastic cover, electronics today can be difficult trace.
i know some antennas form a loop and it can very well be an antenna but i find that my phone works fin with the battery door removed. also there is no reason a new batery door cant be stamped from aluminum. or lined with aluminum tape.
I assume that you can't have a battery like this and use a case like the Body Glove Mirage? Are there alternative cases that will work with a battery like this?
A better solution would be a silicone case with a pocket for a spare battery. Carry it when you need to and switch when you need to.

From my experience with the BG Mirage + the specs provided by the OP, its a definite No. Not with 6mm (50% thicker) but i would applaud anyone who would try it. Who knows, it might actually work out. Now if only Otterbox cases work with ANY extended batteries..........then I am ALL OVER IT.

For the minimalist's out there.. car dock

I've always been a minimalist when it comes to accessories.. covers/cases/car docks. Anyway Here's a simple solution I've been using since day one with my Evo. Simple magnet holder.. Below is the link.. $5.00 . Take off your battery cover... the Metal plate the size of a quarter with adhesive sticker sticks to your battery... then put your battery cover on. Then put the magnet anywhere on your dash.. it's black and a half inch thick .. about an inch or so in diamater.. it also has an adhesive sticker. It pretty inconspicuous.. I have mine right above my radio on the dash. It's perfect.. the magnetic strength is strong enough it has NEVER fallen off.. also it's great cuz you can just turn your phone in portrait or landscape without issue. Also the softouch oem battery cover doesn't scratch from putting it off and on.. like I thought it might. So easy to just set it against the dash when getting in the car and pulling it off getting out.
http://www.amazon.com/Cellet-Retail-Packaged-Universal-Magnetic/dp/B000KNLG3M
Yeah it kinda sucks there is no power to it.. But I just have my cigarette charger there so I can just attach it when needed.
Looks really cool, I might try it out.
hey op, mind sharing a couple picture of how your phone looks with the attachment? thanks!
I too would love to see how it looks attached to your phone. If you could provide a closeup shot of the adhesive attached to the back of your phone as well as a pic of the phone sitting on your dashboard that would be great.
Thanks!
I used one like this on my old TP2 and I loved it. You only have a little piece of metal on the back of your phone and the magnet attached to your car is really strong. Thanks for the link, I might pick up another one.
I'll attach a pic tomorrow.. don't have a camera other than the one on the phone.. I'll use a friends camera tomorrow for a few shots.

Yeah that would be my worry... magnet that close to electronics.
I shouldn't cause any issues for the phone itself, but the compass is likely affected. The Palm Pre has little metal tabs in the case in a similar fashion and it doesn't suffer any bad side effects of being on the touchstone (magnetic connection + inductive charging) but the Pre doesn't have a compass.
Just ordered 2 of them to try out, total as under $10.00. One of the advantages is that I think I'll be able to attach my EVO to my multitude of touchstones, even if it can't charge. (yet, may do that mod if I keep the EVO)
Thanks for the tip!

I'm on the fence about these things but I've seen the mat on sale for $9.99 which is worth it to me if the cover isn't too expensive.
They need one that works in a car. That would be handy.
I've heard alot of horror stories about those powermats burning up devices because they overcharge the hell out of your battery.. Fire hazards too...
I agree with the two ppl who said they are a waste of money
Overcharge the battery?? It works the same as regular charger, power goes from the pad to the case, to the usb port on the phone to charge. It's just replacing the cable with the pad/case.
The horror story will come next month when you realize you spent $100 extra on your electricity bill because of how HORRIBLY inefficient they are.
I bought a charging station and a case for my wife's iPhone for Christmas. The thing's such a pain to use she's stopped using it. She liked the look and feel of the case. Plus, for some reason, they put a different jack on the bottom (the phone's jack plugs into the case). So none of her iPhone jacks work with the case on. It's easy to remove but you shouldn't have to.
It's real finicky about where you place the phone. You usually wind up lifting and placing it down again ten times or more to get it to finally start charging. It's not convenient at all. The accessories that came with the pad work fine. Just drop them on and it starts so I'm guessing the case is the problem.
I have a standard dock which I use as a night clock so I have no need for one. The dock is much more convenient and useful.

I'm looking at the same problem here. I've been using a holder with the 2 amp charger for the past two years with my Incredible and absolutely love it. I've never been able to get an extended battery because of how tight it slides in, though. I'll email them and ask but I might have to just swap in the stock battery for rides I know I'll need the juice.
Pros of using this are great, though. Because it's 2 amp charger I would get ~25% in about 20 minutes of driving with my Incredible with fast charging enabled in the kernel. GPS and Bluetooth for Google Maps would slow the charge down but would still give me a full charge from 20% to full in an hour. With Cyanogen I would set my bluetooth to only turn on when connected to a wall charger so I'd slide this in and my buetooth would turn on and connect to my car automatically. Last but not least, your wires are all tucked away! Very clean look.
Does the mount hold the audio cable so it doesn't move and it plugs into the phone?
Any issues with the diztronic TPU case? Would it prevent the microusb or audio plugs from inserting into the phone completely?

If you get the universal dock, the bottom of the phone is completely exposed so you won't have any issues. I got my wife one of these (universal) for her iPod a few years back and the build quality is top notch.
i wish I didn't have to also plug in the cables separately, but maybe I can jerryrig something up.

If you don't want to remove the case, then you need to get the universal dock. I wish them made a version of the active dock that was slightly adjustable, but they don't.
My question is would the charging holder accommodate the extended battery given that it barely adds any thickness to the device. From the looks of the pictures, it looks like the device slides in and is held on to the sides only so it looks like shouldn't be a problem.
I contacted customer service and they said this:
Indeed the added battery won't make it work in 512324. Our adjustable holder listed with the Galaxy Nexus listing might work. Our custom holders are made for the device as it comes out of the box, and indeed any added thickness will make it not work in our custom holders.

Most extended batteries tend to add a lot of bulk (more than cases sometimes). The person who emailed you back may not be aware that the GN's extended battery adds about 1-2 mm of bulk to the bottom half of the phone.
Since the holder is a slide-in type, I can't see this being 'millimeter-tight'. Don't take my word for it but I'm willing to bet that this will fit even with the extended battery on.
I guess we won't know for sure until someone gets the fitted holders and try it though. I'd try, but I've a case so the fitted ones do me no good for sure.

80 bucks for that dock. Ouch. Good concept, but that is a bit rich.
I wish you could buy these at a store. I've already got the whole set for the Nexus One and I've been waiting for the GN mount. I just added to my cart and it's an extra $20 in shipping (to Toronto). So after duty at the border I'm looking easy at $60 just for that one piece of molded plastic. Yeah the mount is great, but that's seriously expensive.
I've used their cases for the last 2 years, nexus s and thunderbolt, and they are great. I still have my Nexus S holder and the picture of the one on their site for the GNex looks like the same style, if so it should work with the extended battery. The slide in case is tight on the sides but leaves a gap behind the phone, see attached pic. The phone slides into that groove and the groove itself is very thin so it doesn't appear it will interfere with the rear battery cover at all.
Proclips is a great solution. I've used it for my car for years. I used them in 3 different cars. Pricey however, it works very well. A+
Got a negative response =(
Unfortunately not. We only have adjustable holder with charging for our Apple line. These have all the same connectors in exact the same location.
For other phones there are too many differences in charging location and thickness of cases.

I emailed them asking if they have plans for such a device for the galaxy nexus.

Hi
For those in the UK... just ordered an active mount from http://www.mountonus.com/
£59.99... bit steep but I guess thats the price you pay for a nice phone-specific/car-specific mount!

Got a negative response =(
Unfortunately not. We only have adjustable holder with charging for our Apple line. These have all the same connectors in exact the same location.
For other phones there are too many differences in charging location and thickness of cases.

It was to be expected. They are not going to design a niche product for a phone until it sells consistently in the millions. That said... Creating a Micro USB small swing arm to make it universal should be too hard....
If I feel industrial, I might see what I can make on my own.

30 bucks... link is to a pebble back....
it appears they are modifying a non- oem back kinda like the palm mod but with actual pins instead of playing with copper tape
oh and for an extra 30 bucks (60) they will send you a touchstone too.... all from hong kong

Just found this one or 30.00 http://www.ebay.com/itm/SAMSUNG-GAL...t=LH_DefaultDomain_0&var=&hash=item3ccb30692f
and it comes with a touchstone.... and from nyc... both colors...
now it starts to make some sense to buy a pre-made.....
probably over thinking this but will it charge with a phone case?
I ordered one of these two weeks ago, got it in 4 days (need to sign for the package). Sadly, one of the pins had broken off in shipping, but the seller responded in about ten minutes and has a new one in the mail already.
Product appears to be pretty well made, but the back cover they use a little dinky - the letters are inlaid in silver and one already fell out - so now I have a Samung. I plan to remove the charger circuit and stick inside my existing cover.

Scot,
Does yours stick up a bit as in their photos or close allt he way... also What carrier are you (i wonder if it only sticks up for certain carriers)
Does anyone know if the touchstone will work with a basic TPU case on the phone? Not sure if the magnets or charging field is strong enough....

Mine is entirely flush (T-Mobile version).
FWIW; the circuit he uses is out of Palm devices - even says "Palm Inc" on the product. Not that there is anything wrong with that...
i'm kinda leery of how the gap pops up... could they not have used pins that are spring loaded so it actually adjusts for the different variants out there?
well taking another look on his ad... it seems just the back is 29.99... if you select it with the touchstone it's 49.99
20 bucks for something amazon has for 5... i dont think so.....

They are spring loaded. As I said, on mine, you can't tell it is on there. It does NOT charge through a case.

well damn.. they must be some hardcore springs to keep the backing to snap into place 0.o''''''
EDIT: if it doesn't charge through the case, that's a big issue for me.. I prefer not to take my case off and on every time I want to charge the device... I guess i'll have to wait for the Qi alternative to be viable
How are the magnets on the one you purchase from ebay?

Sounds like (and it makes sense one of the "open back" cases aka a bumper will work.....
Whoever said the back sits completely flush on his galaxy s iii can you post some pictures? That is the only part of this that is making me hesitant, I don't want the back not clipping on properly.
Also does anyone know if this charging door would work with the energizer charging pad or the powermat charging pad?
it will definitly not work with the energizer mat since that's Qi technology while the touchstone uses a slightly different variation.
Case
I have no problem charging with Spigen Neo case installed - both Touchstone and/or the Qi setup...
