Is there any better (than stock) picture viewer utility? The one in Eclair shows the images very ugly when i zoom them in...
Try Droid Comic Viewer, available in Market
You should also give JustPictures! a try, it's free from the Market and it's great!
great!
thank you. it is obviously better. no idea why android has such crappy image viewer...

Justpictures or the comic viewer?
Floating Image is good as well. Its free and open source.
Justpictures is cool, but it seems to show some 'banding' or stripe effect on some images at certain zoom levels. I also had to change "Maximum resolution" on the settings to get images to load their full resolutions. Maybe the stripe effect is just a result of the image being rendered at it's full resolution all the time because it disappears as you zoom in.
It's good though, nice interface.
I've been using Large Image Viewer: http://www.appbrain.com/app/image.viewer
It's not fancy, but shows images in their full quality without any glitches. Although it does take a fraction of a second to load the full quality as you zoom in.
Tried the JP viewer and i dont see any improvements, the comic viewer is close to showing full resolution BUT the loading time is LONG!

Hi guys!
despite i use my HD for 9 months now, i still didn't find an application to make photos stored into my HD to be seen in hi resolution when they are attached to a contact or displayed by TFD3D within Photos and Videos tab
it's kinda of frustrating when you take nice pics with a dedicated camera with +5Mpx and then transfer them into HD
i know that there are some "manual" methods to make them displayed in hi-res but this is very dificult when you have more then 10 pics
so i am asking if you, smart guys here, can make such an application in order to be used by all of us with less programming skills
i am sorry if this app allready exists and i dind't find it out. if so, please point me to the right direction
thank you and best regards to all of you!
this is interesting - 105 users view this and no comment
if it is intersting, why no comment?
if it is not interesting, why +100 views?
It's interesting and I would like such an app as well - but it doesn't make much sense for me to comment because I have no idea on how to program it!
And I'm quite sure most of the 105 other users that have read this don't know either!
Tap on the low res "framed" image on the Photos and Videos tab to open the image in glorious high quality.
Slide left and right to scroll through the images in the album.
As for contacts, add the high quality image to the contact on the phone, not via Outlook, and it will show a high quality version on the phone.
Hope this helps and I haven't totally missed what you really wanted

nope
i know what you said and this is not how i wanted
i want to copy hi-res pictures from my cam into my SD card and them to use them to attach to contacts or to display on "Pictures and Videos" tab without any manual trick in order to be displayed in hi-res
if this is not possible "by default" because of some windows or htc bug, then i want an application that can be run and then all pics to be displayed in hi-res, no matter what i do with them
would that be possible?
It should be possibly, its just that no one has ever developed such a program and I can't see anyone doing this either
sorry, dont get that.
every picture, i transfer to my touch hd from an external source, are displayed in high resolution.
you sure, you dont need some glasses?
please add a screenshot to show what your problem is.
Hm, do you want a 1:1 pixel mapping? Then you will have to scroll around on your display to see the image.
Attention modern art:
Attached picture shows the relation of a 5Mpix image (2kx2.5k) to a wvga (480x800 black rectangle) screen.
Typically images will be downsampled to show 'all' information on a smaller resolution. Simple example: Having a 16x16 image and you want to show it on 8x8 screen you could take the average of 2x2 pixel blocks of the image which will give the pixel color in the 8x8 screen. This will introduce some bluriness.

smart line! did you came out with it all by yourself?
the low res pictures problem of HD when attached to contacts or displayed on pictures & videos tab is well known.
maybe i missed something and it is solved on newer roms but i count also on fallen spartan comments and it seems that it is not solved yet

Both the HD's I've got show high res contact images.
I put the images on the phone (created an Avatar folder to keep things neat) then from the contact picked the image.
From what I've read, that's the way to do it.
If you pick the images in outlook then sync, it creates a lower res image and uses that on the phone.
The rolordex screen in album is admitedly lower res than selecting the image and scrolling left and right, but then if it wasn't the rolordex would be a lot more cpu hungry, what with having to display the picture rotated slightly, and animate it as you flick through the album.
Has anyone else noticed this? When you go to Photos on your Desire and browse them - even if full screen - they never show up sharp, but bit blurry. If you zoom in/out on them they soon sharpen up. Weird.
Just wondering if its an issue with my phone or general issue.
Sorry few posts this morning... Its been a Desireble morning.

There's an explanation for that..
http://phandroid.com/2010/04/13/images-look-blurry-on-android-2-1-theres-a-reason-for-that/
Thanks for the link. I agree with the many opinions that this is an issue with resolution, NOT color depth. The pics are blurry - not sharp.
Hope this can be fixed soon. I use the Photos gallery to show pics to friends etc and it doesnt look impressing.

I think you're mistaking the Cooliris gallery you find on stock 2.1 with the Photo gallery on the Desire which is HTC's own app for Sense UI.
Look up Cooliris and Nexus One.

My mistake. I've not got my Desire yet (Roll on, Monday) so just thought they'd be using the same gallery app.
If you find any information on this matter though, keep us posted.
To the OP, could you elaborate? Are these pictures you took on the phone camera? Did you sync them from your PC and if so did you just drag and drop them onto the SD or did you use some syncing software i.e. Doubletwist? Did you download them from the phones browser and if so was it over Wifi or 3G?
I just sent over a large photo (4656x3600) and it's sharp in preview mode and zoomed in. I synced some photos using Doubletwist and it reduced the size of the photos without me knowing...so it wasn't the phone. Pictures I've taken with the phone are also fine.
Its most noticeble with photos taken with the Desire camera. If you zoom in or out they sharpen, otherwise they are bit fussy.
Please check if the zooming does any difference on yours?
I'n not having this problem at all with my Desire.

Yes, I see what you're talking about. The picture isn't shown full resolution until you do some zooming in or out.
I must say, personally it's not that big a deal, and I can't seem to find any way to change that behaviour.
Is it possible to install Cooliris on the Desire?

Yes, but that just degrades the visual quality WAY more than the HTC photo app.

It does?? I heard it is a great app...
I'm not having any such problem with either the photos app or the Gallery3D app
They show blurry as the system is showing a lower quality thumbnail that it has saved so that browsing between them is quicker. Once you start zooming in it loads the full size image and it becomes sharper.
any update on this , as a photographer i have my portfolio
on my Desire handy to show my pictures to anyone that is interested..
but it always take me to zoom them in a little to render them sharp which is a pain in the but when wanting to show them off in a quick manner...
if not any good alternatives then the gallery...
Unfortunately the pictures viewed in the Gallery won't be loaded in a higher resolution when zooming in. Can anybody confirm this?
Confirmed, this application ideed doesn't refine when zoomed. Didn't do with Desire neather. I would like to have a HTC album application. That one does zoom and refine...
Search image viewer on market,it should work properly
indeed - but this gallery is a great looking app... don't want to give it away ;-)
The problem is that there's nothing to refine. What I've read in the reviews that the image app makes a smaller version of the original image. So you are looking at less the pixels than the original image. Stupid but hey, It's not a camera.

Thanks for that - can now see pics in much higher res, but the app lacks a few basic gallery features, such as rotate, swipe/move to next pic, etc. Any alternatives?
What about installing the nexus one gallery app like what we did with the milestone?

Pretty stupid indeed, with a gallery you want to watch the original images... Not some thumbnail. Hope this will be fixed in the future...
Hi all.
We all agree that SGS Super AMOLED is amazing and viewing photos is simply a joy... but the Gallery 3D supplied with the phone can't handle image quality in a satisfying manner.
There are plany of apps out there for image viewing. Some are neat, some are less.
I've tested some apps like Floating images, B&B, Just Picture, Picture Folder and Image Viewer.
As a professional photographer, image quality is a must. So I tested each app with various images but same resolution (800pixels long side).
All apps mentioned above, except one, failed to show the right sharpness and color transitions.
The best app for those who care about quality, is Image Viewer. This app has no appeal and no "fun playing around" feeling to it but it does the job on the best side.
If you think there are better apps out there, please share.
Cheers.
Large Image Viewer seemed to give good quality.

Personally I use JustPictures. In the options you can set the picture resolution to "original" which makes it show the full resolution, although it has these minor line artefacts so the quality isn't perfect.
I can't find this "B&B" you mention. What is it?

I believe Image Viewer or Large Image Viewer is the same app.
The lines you mentioned are called BANDING. This is usually seen in transition in the BLUE color (e.g., Skies).
Image viewer won't show you these banding at all.

Have you guys tried the fixed gallery app that can be installed via sgs tools? it fixes sensor batt draining bug too. Also fixes picture quality issues. I use justpictures myself

I really like Perfect Viewer. It has really good controls for zooming and scrolling, and I believe it does it's resizing in a way that is pretty high-quality.

bro is the upgrades for SGS tools compatible with your ROM??
gallery from sgs tools is not compatible with JPU
The gallery from Number22 ( SGS tools ) is pretty decent once he fixes the random FC but and the black bars on the thumbnails, to date it has the BEST image quality ive seen/

Try large image viewer, and compare images. Quality wise (as mentioned already) this is the best app.
I hope someone has the same issue or that this is a "normal" behavior of the HOX, but I don't think I ever noticed that until 2 days ago; anyway here's the problem.
When I take a picture with my camera, the picture looks great during review time (the option you set in settings 3 or 5 seconds). But when I open the same picture in gallery it seems that the quality is lost. I can notice that since as soon as I review the picture, I click on the lower left corner to open the picture again and I can see the difference between the "review picture" and the "saved picture". This is especially apparent in the front camera: when I take a picture of myself, my eyes look very sharp/cartoonish.
I have been running ARHD for a while since 14.2 and I am on 18.1 now. I installed lyapota mod pack which included camera jb mod extrim. I thought it was because of the mod so I did a clean installation of the rom with full wipe and the same problem was there.
Please advise.
Thanks to whoever will help!
May be a different viewer is used(triggered) to view the saved photos.
And thus thus could be a viewer app problem, not the photo quality itself.
Did you try to open these photos on your PC to see how are they looking there?

Yes I did, unfortunately it's the same problem.
Could it be that the preview is smaller than the actual image, and that the quality therefore looks better, because the preview is smaller..?
Try to post a picture you have taken, to show what you mean.
Kind Regards
TwinAdk
Here is a picture showing both scenarios. I took a screenshot during the review (on the left) and then i opened the actual image. I put them side by side. Notice the color fading and the noise/loss of sharpness in the right picture. This is with normal day light, the effect gets worse when in low light.
