I like that everything is synced up to gmail. But I dislike the lack of options as far as how to organize the contacts.
I basically have 3 groups of contacts: Friends/family, business and food.
By default when i open the list of contacts, i'd just like the friends/family group to be displayed. I'm kind of surprised that i can just swipe left or right to switch between groups. Failing that, can i just set one group as the default group to display? I've poked around in the settings and so far haven't found anything like that.
Htc sense does that by default and very good too. Create a group for the contact groups such as all contacts. In the contact edit page page specify the group for that contact such as "all contacts". In the sense people widget select the contact group you want displayed in that widget and all contacts belonging to that group will only be displayed. Enjoy.
Is there any way to do that when i go into the main contacts app itself? i.e. when i click on the 'people' button. Can i have that screen default to a certain group?

Not when you click on the people app but definitely when using the people widget.
ok. Guess i'll just stick two widgets on a screen then for the two groups i use the most.
thanks

Hi all
When you link Facebook to contacts it uses the generic profile picture as the contact picture. If the person/contact has more than 1 profile picture can you chose which profile picture is used for the contact in the phone. For example, I don't like one particular profile picture but like another.
The reason for my question is that my HTC Touch HD would allow you to chose which profile photo (from Facebook) is used ..
Cheers
It seems to default to the FB one over Phone one. I quite like it because it means it changes, when they change their FB photo.
You can choose between Facebook and GMail (and maybe local) picture for a contact : go to the contact details, if the contact comes from more than 1 source (GMail and Facebook) there is a little "linked" symbol on the upper right. Click on that symbol. You'll see the 2 sources. On that screen, you can click on the picture of your contact and choose which one to display.

That is the general idea but it seems it doesn't do so. My contacts have changed their pictures a long time ago 9on FB) and i still see their old photo. I can seem to trigger it to change. If i un-link them i see my google picture BUT Facebook shows the NEW picture. If i re-link the profile i get back the old picture.
Any ideea how to force it to update the bloody picture?
Thanks.
Am I right and from all the threads here Contacts is a mess on the Desire?
You might have to remove and add your account again in settings

It's not a mess, it just that it has A LOT of extra features (more or less useful) that don't work as they should.
As a basic contacts to select, search, call, message, email etc it's perfectly fine, they just tried to make it do a lot more and with some consequences.
@slybeans: well that works, but really isn't a solution.
I am coming from a Vibrant so am not all that familiar with Vanilla android, is there any way to get contacts to sync with Facebook? I liked how on the Vibrant I could link all my phone contacts with their facebook accounts so there photos would be updated, also have quick access to their fb pages, but mostly for throwing in all their pictures. I see you can add FB friends into contacts on the phone but I dont see a way to link the FB friends contact info with their phone number? Is there any way to link them? I dont want to have two seperate contacts (one for phone number and one for FB) for each person in my "contacts" tab.
Thanks
When I first opened the Facebook app, it asked if I wanted to sync all friends to contacts, sync information to existing contacts, or skip syncing.
I chose to sync with existing contacts and it only added pictures and Facebook links to the contacts.

In that case... go to Contacts :ress and hold contact's name::: > EDIT CONTACT > then Press MENU > JOIN.
you should see a list of suggested names from your facebook contacts.....
If the one you want isn't listed there.... try changing either first name or last name or both... (you dont have to save) and then press MENU > JOIN .... again.... and it should come up...

Anyone using launcher pro, i notice that even though it syncs with facebook and puts the pics in the contacts tab, it doesnt put the contact into the contact picture when you edit the contact so as a result, doesnt put it into the "people" widget
nm turns out its a known launcher pro issue
Gmail automatically adds contacts you've emailed into your contact list, they belong to "All Contacts" group.
Manually added contacts belong to "My Contacts" group.
But I couldn't get the phone to display *only* "My Contacts". (Contacts -> Hide/Show -> Google...)
Tried Googling the issue, solutions available but don't seem to work on Defy/Motorola.
Any idea?
Thx in advance.
Anyone...?
I have the same problem, which I posted to the Motorola Owners forums as well, only I don't just want to not display those contacts, but prevent then from syncing as well. I can't yet post working links:
supportforums.motorola.com/thread/47333?tstart=0
After syncing my new Defy with my Google account, I've found all the contacts in the phone - not just the meaningful ones from My Contacts that have phone numbers and names - but every last single email address has created a separate contact in the phone.
My question is this: how can I limit the synced contacts to a group, like My Contacts in GMail?

So far, I have not found a way to limit the display or the syncing of these contacts.
There are 2 apps for contacts, the one that is embedded in the dialer (the one that SUCKS), and the other is a stand alone Contacts which allows yo Manage groups in a certain way. I'd like to have good one embedded in the Dialer next to Recent and Favorites.. but im no dev. An certainly is annoying having to switch between them.

Is there a way to ungroup messages in GMail? It keeps adding all messages into one message from one sender..
I don't think so. That's the whole point of Gmail, it threads messages by subject.
Yes You Can..

By default, Gmail was originally designed to keep all the messages and replies with the same subject line grouped together in one convenient place. While this “conversation view” was intended to spare users the chore of rooting around the In box for a particular message in the thread, it can be unwieldy when a lot of people are contributing to the conversation.
Google realized that not everybody likes having the messages clumped together, so Gmail now makes it optional. To ungroup your messages, log into your Gmail account on the Web, click on the gear icon in the upper right corner and choose Mail Settings. On the General tab, in the Conversation View area, click the button next to “Conversation view off” and then click the Save Changes button at the bottom of the settings page.

Hey guys! Can anybody help doing the same in SGS3?
Thx
My conversation view is off in Gmail on the web , but in SGS3 gmail App, its still clubing somany msgs and makes difficult to find out the required one.
Not sure if this is possible... I sms/mms/email a lot to my kids/family. And I find myself sending articles, pictures, etc to the same 2 or 3 contacts. Is there a way to make a group "KIDS" for example, that would contain the 2 or 3 contacts instead of adding each contact separately ? I've looked, and I sure can't figure it out.
Yes go to contacts and then groups tab. Hit the menu button and make a new group . On the bottom of that screen you will see add member. Click that and add people to your new group.
Now to send a message to that group go back to contacts and click the group tab. And long press the group you just made. You will see options to email and message
