When I do install any Android Flavor (warm donut, incubus froyo, cyanogen, etc) in NAND / SD (sys on NAND and data on SD card (data.img or ext2 partition)), the system becomes very very slown ... even to unlock screen, the mostly of time, the screen turns off before I get unlocked..
When I install only in NAND (sys and data) everything is ok, and very fast.
In Cyanogen, I have option in setup, to install apps in SD (even if sys and data are in NAND.)
Anyone have similar problema with speed in SD install ?

What's the class of your sdcard? A class 4 or class 6 sdcard should have performance close to or similar to NAND.

Hum..
I really don't know, but I presume it is class 2 (microSD 1Gb became with TyTN II)
under 4 gigs their isnt a class system because its not SDHC as far as i know, but performance will be sluggish with data on the SD since the system has to constantly pull to the SD its just the nature of having Data on SD

it will still be dependant on the speed of the card, might want to do some speed test on your pc to see how fast it is. I don't have valid speeds on me but you can prob google to see what class 4 and 6 tests would return. I run everything on SD and don't have any issues.

because have you ROOT
Class 2 microsd write speed is 2mbps. Seems your transfer rates are fine. Try a class 4 or 6 card and see what you get.

No, if you have rooted phone, after root slow usb
I have Class 10 and slow. Before root OK, after slow.
Indepedence sdcard, fat32 or fat+ext ... slow
Absolutely,, before rooting i was gtting 5mbps transfer rate with the same sd card.....
But i dont understand what does rooting to do with data transfer rate,,,,???

It's probably the EXT partition...
I have the same problem.
I dont have a SD EXT partition and its really SLOW! 500KB/S! Please helpp! Got alot of stuff copying back to sdcard
Can be a kernel problem as well. Try to search on the forum, I recall a thread where was a solution to this.
Transcend class 2 surely goes over 2 MB/s writing speed, i would also say it's something that has to do with the microSD partitions, maybe formatting and repartitioning would help

are you confusing the write speed and the read speed?? when you copy something from your sd card to somewhere else. that is the read speed! you will get about 5mb/s on any class of sd card... when you copy somthing to a sd card, thats the write speed, and there is no way you will ever get more than 2mb/s with a class 2 card, end off! full stop
Pretty sure class determines the minimum, not the maximum, write speed.
I'm also quite pi**ed off with the copy speed.
On stock rom it was definetely fast and now absolutely slow.
Are you serious it is because of root?
Well, i prefer root more than faster writing speed - but i would really love to know the reason for!
What ROM do you have now? Flash a kernel with the SD fix, and you'll get back some speed, but not the maximum (if your card is partitioned).
I'm using Amethyst RC 7 (2.3.2), using A2SD+.
i think for GB is no kernel fix available? But to be serious, i've never thought about another kernel as the one which is included in the rom.
Any help is appreciated
so, i got the hint to use multi-móunt sd card which works really fine. I get again about 2mb/sec which is absolutely ok..
Actually, yes this is Kernel related.
Sadly the latest Kernel .37 is affected.
But Luckily there is a fix.
Look here

lol strange but i was getting around 1-1.3mb on my class-2 8GB card, now after rooting,i am getting 3-4mbps.
also on other card which was 2gb(donno about its class)i used to get 3-4mbps write speed & now after rooting i get 10mbps.
P.S. i have custom rom installed
I had the same prob...
Solved it by ,completely formating my SDCard (dont forget to mount the partitions in Recovery) and after flashing a new rom,i flashed Cutts kernel and all works fine now again
I used to have approximately 5.0MB/s writing speed before rooting my HTC Desire. Since then, the speed dropped to 150~500KB/s. I tested with OpenDesire, PAYS-MIUI, MIUI, CM6/7 and they all give me the same slow speed. I read in one of the forum that Kernel 2.6.35.x solves the speed problem but I have not tried it. Anyway, a satisfactory work around for me is to use FTP file transfer from File Expert. The downside is, you'll need a stable WIFI connection to transfer large files.
Cheers
Hy, i have a routed desire running auras 7.6.1 (i think, anyway the latest of his roms) and a kingston class 6 microsd. I have testet the sd on my laptop right after i got it and it could sustain a rate of 7mb/s write and around 10 to read. Now i formated it twice, reinstaled rom and record at 800x600 even if i choose mp4 or h.264 i get an anoying 1 sec frreeze at each 20-30 sec of recording...i mean recording never stops....i can see that freeze only at playback. I tought its the player so i have copyed the movie to pc and i still get the same freeze on pc too, so im thinking its a writing problem on sd card or something...
Ps if i plug my phone to pc and use it as mass storage device and upload a file to phone i only get a sustained speed of 1,5-2mb/s is that ok or is it rly somthing wrong with my card as i suspect...
Excuse my poor english and typing mistakes i send it from my desire thanks.
There seems to be a problem with SD card speeds in Froyo / Sense ROMs. You could try a non-Sense ROM, e.g. CyanogenMod 6, Defrost or OpenDesire - I had similar problems to you and got around them by switching to CM6. If you decide to try another ROM it might be worth using the "SD Card Speed Test" app from Market to benchmark before and after you change ROM.
Let me know how you get on...
Hy, i have tested the sd card with that aplication, i get 2mb write and 4mb read. I have instaled cyanogen and another rom without sense, speed went from 2mb write to 3mb write and that was all...i have tryed it without an ext3 partition also and speed was the same... so i went back to sense rom... since the speed improvement its not much. Maybe someone can recomend me an sd card wich works at greater speeds with a rooted desire, and maybe a place where i can buy it from UE thanks.
that's strange. I have a class 4 Kingston 16GB card and I get 6mb write and 5mb read!

You said earlier that you have a class 6 SD card, so you should be getting at least 6MB/s. Do you have something other than your phone that you can test your SD card in, for example a card reader? That would help you to work out whether the problem is with your SD card or the phone.
if u can recomend me a software to test it in windows 7 x64 i can test it in my laptop
Hy, well problem is solved for me. I have tested the card in laptop and i was geting a 2mb/s write and sometimes jumped at 3-4mb/s max. So i sent it back, and got an A-data 8gb class 6. I pluged it straight into phone, recorded a video and worked flawless, i installed android sd card speed test and i got a write of 6mb/s and 7mb/s read. Afther that i did an ext3 partition on it, and got same write and read speed, so problem was the SD card. Thanks.
Hello!
I'm running Eclair on my DEFY, it's rooted via z4root.
I currently hold a 2GB microSD card and, as the volume of the apps is getting higher, I wish to upgrade to a 16GB microSD (a SunDisk one).
But I'm wondering if there's more to do then simply copy the apps to a temporary directory on my pc then fill in the new card.
Anyone has yet upgraded?
--- edit: made a deep search on the forum and find out I need a class 6/8 microSD, then I have to format prior to copy up everything that was on the old microSD.
Anything else should I know?
Cheers,
C*
Nothing special to do.
Just copy your actual SD contents on the new one and Go!
I went from the 2GB for a 8GB like this without any tricks...

Class 6/8 is not needed, my 8GB is a Class2 and it work absolutly fine!
For apps the data rate ofthe SD is not really important, 'cause u'll never load large amount off data each time. And SD card are still very very very slow against RAM.
Flash memory have good random access time, that's much important than data rate.
Good data rate are only for large file transfert from/to an other device (PC, etc)
Last thing: by default le SD is not use for app installation on the defy, they use the 2GB internal memory.
You should use some App2Sd for extend this, and it's better to have Android 2.2 then.
Apps in android 2.1 arent stored on the sd card without a mod available on this phone yet.
Instead it is stored on the 2gb internal memory which should be pleanty for lots of apps

Fine, I thought there were some special "needings", I was stuck to the Motorola A1210 that was a bit tricly because of some apps hidden here and there on the microSD.

Actually the major part of the apps is installed on the microSD, I've checked several times and the percentage is so parted:
Apps/Things on the microSD 85%
Apps/Things on the Phone 23%
I'm not using any program to move stuff, but I'm intrigued by App2SD.
So thanks again =)

As said in the previous reply, I can see stuff is stored on the microSD mainly..
No just copy the stuff from you old card to the new one. And as for class 6/8 I'm using a class 4 and its fine
etherea=> dont mix apps installation et apps data
The apps files are installed on the internal memory, but every app can use SD (intern or extern, whatever is present on the phone) for store datas.
Think about GPS software. This kind of soft need 1, 2 or more GB for maps storage.
The apps itself is on the "apps" space on the internal memory and all the maps stuff are on SD (intern or extern)
You can use software like diskusages to see what is where

Apps are not stored on the sd, however some apps data is.
Well thank you both, I still need to read a lot about the phone and aout Android but your answers did clarify a bit =)
Then, I upgraded to a 8GB SanDisk microSD with no problem.
The only minor issue was a duplicate of a couple of non-vital directories and related data, which were wiped out almost in a second.
Everything's working fine and have now much more space to fill in =)
Thanks everyone for the suggestions and hints!

as im not up to scratch with adb, and some roms, like wildpuzzle v0.8 only got about 105mb phone memory, because the davlik cache is on the phone, is there a update.zip or something flashable that moves the cache to SD so there is a lot more phone memory, I know if you copy wildpuzzle v0.6 on top of v0.8 it will give you more phone memory, but some roms have a little script in them that has the cache to SD thingy, If there isnt a update.zip, can someone create one????
thanks for any help you can give!
the file on most roms is called move_cache_sd

Stop advertising that bloatware crap, just use dark tremor apps2sd like the rest of us, it has options for cache, and dalvik cache, but those are stupid, because running cache from sd card = BAD.
well if you don't want to transfer the cache to sd,don't thick it.just thick apps and private apps and download.the solvation is simple. And it is very useful.i dunno the programmer of it ,i just shared my opinion ,it is not an advertisement and i am not an advertiser ,at least i can only say:respect a lil bit( the programmers labours instead of behaving like it is like some ****!)

But thats the whole point...to have a faster reboot, better performance and responsiveness, it's better to leave dalvik cache on the phone UNLESS ur sd card is class 6 or better as mentioned in my previous reply.
Same goes for anything that is placed on sd/sd-ext. including apps.
Your battery will also last a lot less because the sd card (lower than class 6) will be stressing not only the cpu and sd controller but the whole experience and performance of your OS.
Wouldn't cache on SD wear it down? It is the wear levelling good enough?
install wildpuzzle 0.6, cache is in SD, stack 0.8 on it. and u will have cache on sd

Actually I believe class doesn't matter as much and if anything lower class is usually better for cache since speed-optimized SD cards at higher classes are set to prioritize large file writing at high speeds with slower random write speeds. These cards are mfg. for use in cameras and as media cards in phones, so seek times aren't the priority when you are reading/writing 8mb at a time. Get a good SD card testing app on your phone and one on your computer like crystalmark and test some. Turns out it's just like has been said for years, cheap cards are cheap cards. Kingston and SanDisk, Transcend all perform much better than other knock offs. A Kingston class 2 will outperform even a Kingston class 10 for most data2sd actions. I bought a class 10 card, thinking it would be faster but then ran the tests and it had about 1/10th the speed for random read/write as my SanDisk class 2.
right twice this week my sdcard has format itself while in use, the rom i'm using carrys on working(miuixj) but all my apps f/c , then vanish. Anyody any idea why this happens ? The phone was idle ,then when unlocked things start f/c, then go.
Just a thought on this ,could it be caused by a virus ? what are the nown virus's
if any on android ?

everything, when i run it on gparted it just says unallocated, then I just format it and re partition it fat32 then ext 3(1gb).
Dodgy card?
If it were just the ext I would think it was a file system corruption caused by unclean unmount, but both partitions? Hmmm
Try reformat it and download h2testw to check it for errors perhaps on your pc?
I've had the card for about six months now and not had a problem.

Do you have any software that you can set to wipe the SD card? I'm thinking about autowipe as I had the same problem and the cause was a setting in autowipe which wiped the SD card if you entered the wrong screen unlock code so many times. While in my pocket the screen got activated, random codes were entered and the SD card got wiped!

No, I've not put anything like that on, don't think there is anything in the miuixj rom that does that.
tested around a gb of data on a lexar 16gb class 4 card, heres the results .
Warning: Only 1024 of 14223 MByte tested.
Test finished without errors.
You can now delete the test files *.h2w or verify them again.
Writing speed: 9.80 MByte/s
Reading speed: 17.4 MByte/s
H2testw v1.4
I've no idea if this is good or bad to be honest.
If I get chance later I'll format the card and do a full test.

That is sort of good. It means in the 1GB you tested, there were no errors. But yeah if you get chance, at least you can rule that out.
Do the read write speeds look ok for a class 4 ? i'll do a full test later, when hopefully I'll not need the phone.
got it running again using miuixj xpart, with a few apps on the ext, they are the ones that f/c first.
CWM re partitioned my sd carrd by itself?
Last night I was making nandroid backup when I picked up my phone I accidentally hit backup (again). Fine so I made extra backups.
When I wake up I see an error that titanium backup was interrupted and the sd card was removed.
This morning, my SD card is unreadable by my phone AT ALL. I use an old HTC incredible 1 as a card reader and in mass storage mode I see that the SD card went from 32gb down to 8gb and has only ONE folder on it full of misc app data for a single app.
F:\Android\data\com.zoodles.kidmode\files\audio\en\US a bunch of mp3 sounds.
Everything else is gone! The card does register 2 other partitions though inaccessible to Windows.
HOW did CWM or Titanium repartition my SD card in the middle of the night all by itself?????
Ideas on how to retrieve or access any data that MIGHT still be there???
I plan to boot into Live USB Linux Parted Magic and examine the partitions.....but WTF!??!
