[Q] pls help desire is getting so warm, keep rebooting - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My desire is getting too hot/warm near the bottom area and keep rebooting.
It is t-mobile UK version.i have debrand my desire to wwe 2.10.405.2
boot loader 32.44.00.32 by using gold card.
I check with htc they told me that the warranty of my phone is valid only in UK,than in frustration i just open the back panel of my phone and put some small pieces of aluminum foil over the heat sink to absorb some extra heat but that did not work and i don't understand what to do and i closed it again.
i cannot use my phone for more than 15 mnts bcos it getting so warm and rebooting.
if i remove the bettery and keep it for some time to get cool than it work fine but after some time same problem.
pls pls somebody help me

HELP! My phone gets hot and restarts! Please look for more info inside!

Hello dear friends!
HTC let me down Kind of stupid phones indeed at least desire...
I have my phone for quite a time now, it is rooted with unrewoked, clockwork recovery and s-on. I flashed many different roms in the past and everything was brilliant. In a pas half-a-year or so I stayed with only one ROM - MIUI-Au. I kept updating it to the newer versions and so on and on. Never had any random reboot or something. At least maybe it was because of some strange app or something else. But now it started to reboot randomly and constantly!
Phone gets hot abit and it just reboots, and never comes to android homescreen again, until I put out the battery, hold it for few minutes, pop it back and then it boots. But as soon as start to play music, or run a game the phone gets hot abit and reboots again. and so on and on. I thought maybe it was a miui issue. So I tried to flash different roms, but guess what? None of the even boot! The main screen shows and with the same second it bootloops again and forever!... (
Even from recovery it sometimes reboots randomly. So i managed somehow to flash my miui back and it at least boots. But it is very unstable now, I barely can use my phone now
PLEASE WHO CAN HELP ME????
My warranty probably out of date, and my phone is rooted, I dont think HTC would accept it...
any thoughts? friends?
What have you set the CPU max to?
Sent from my HTC Desire using xda premium
Thank you for response! Appreciate, really!! I didn't set it, I left everything by default I think! Because as i said, i even tried flashing different roms, not only miui.
What else could be? By the way, with stock froyo rom If I remember correctly, sometimes it became extremely hot, but I didnt get any reboots from that. But now, it gets just a little bit hot and it seems that this causes the reboot...
Now what I just noticed, I get reboots even when the phone is idle. And it is not even warm!
If its not getting hot then I'm confused lol. It sounds like a actual hardware fault. Sorry I can't help with this one

try and get it taken back to stock if you dare.
The phone hasn't been out 2 years yet, which is how long the warranty is.
Thank you! But is there any possibility to fix it without HTC involvement? Maybe it is not hardware issue ? Can it be because phone is rooted and I flashed many roms to it ? I didnt try AOSP roms since reboots started, I will try to pop in Cyanogenmod or other and see if I will get reboots.
Would rerooting my phone and updating my recovery fix the problem?
and Note: yesterday I tried to S-OFF my phone, but I can't even do that with my unstable MIUI. It rebooted in the middle of the process..
I had a similar problem, apparently it's not uncommon on the early revisions. I sent mine to HTC and they replaced the mainboard.
Thank you for answer! But what if my phone is bought through a contractor?
Can just call HTC and ask the for repair? Or should I contact my contractor first ?
Just give them a call and they will try to help you out. I had a very good customer service experience with them when my desire had some issues.
They will require a proof of purchase though. If you managed to get the receipt from your "contractor" (I am unsure what you mean by a contractor), then there should be no problem.
Sorry for misleading word, I meant T-Mobile. I bought my phone under contract. I think I have a receipt. I even have whole box and stuff of the phone somewhere in my drawer.(just sayin ). So how is customer service of HTC? Poor, good ? I heard you need to tell them that you did a factory reset and that didn't help. Is that true. Also if I will unroot my phone, will they know it was rooted anyhow?
Ahhh....this overheating issue seems common. How they can release faulty phones?? No clue.
thanks for answers mates!
In Singapore, HTC service is really good. Phone was still under warranty.
It took me just one (real) call to confirm a repair order. The first call I was just checking to see what options were available to me.
The second call was an actual repair request. And the third call was me pestering them for a pickup date. heehee
In Singapore, repairs were done via courier. They picked it up and 1 working day later, they sent it back.
Naturally, you will probably need to impress upon them that you tried everything to fix your phone (which I hope you did which includes proving to yourself that it's not the ROMs fault).
You will definitely need to reset everything back to zero. In my case, I downloaded an RUU to totally reset everything back to STOCK, which included removing clockworkmod recovery. You WILL need to create a goldcard for this though so bear in mind that it's not exactly a case of a simple flashing procedure. At least not if you don't already have a goldcard.
Sorry if I overread it at some point, but you speculated at the beginning there could be some faulty app causing this, but you never meantioned performing a full wipe. Have you full wiped yet? Just to make sure it is indeed no software problem.
greets
Thank you for your answers. At the moment I have SuperNova classic ROM. ( 2.3.3 + Sense 2.1) But my phone crashes again and again, it is so annoying and causes me so much trouble.
I never tried a reset or unroot and return to original rom. Im just wondering now, would this help to remove or at least remove those reboots?
Today I was in my work and i was keeping my phone in my jeans pocket. it got hot as u would expect when keeping in pocket and suddenly it rebooten, then it went into a bootloop and started to bootloop 7 times in a row quickly. then again and again. It became very hot at that time.
For the interest, what exact hardware faults causes these reboots and why phone gets even hotter if you keep it on boot loop. If I keep phone cold, the rom usualy stays normal, without reboots. but as soon as I start using my phone, texting or calling for at least 5minutes of using it just reboots.
as I said- really annoying thing :S
I remember my happy times with miui, apps and no reboots Was fun!
cheers for helping!
I would give full wipe / factory reset a chance, and maybe RUU.
At least try it before sending phone to htc.
It is hardware problem, search forum. Fresh ROM without SD card, enabled WIFI and GPS, running G navigation, back of the phone is warm - restart after few minutes.
Maybe someone know how to read info form the phone right before reset? We could understand why the phone is reseting and hopefully add some patch.
Reboot-loop experience
Hey,
i had the same problem over the last few months: In the beginning my phone restarted only when it got hot, but it got worse over the last few weeks, in the end i was not able to use two apps at the same time (music and mytracks) or even to surf the internet longer than a few minutes. The problem did noticeably decrease when the phone was cool - tested by putting it on a fan or in the fridge. Yet, Skype was regularly killing it. As i really love my phone (and especially the AMOLED-Screen!) i did not want to resign. The battery cover contains some metal which is supposed to enhance heat dissipation - so i attached a little thermal pad to the hotter bottom of the phone to improve contact with the head spreader. Unfortunately it did not entirely fix the problem. Yes, it improved the situation a little, but it got even worse after a week or two - in the end i had to turn it in.
So i decided to take it to the Telekom-Shop. They were very kind and told me they would call the other day to confirm that the replacement would have been shipped. It took a few days longer, but i got a phone with the AMOLED-Screen! The employee said it was a used mainboard in a new case, completely refurbished. They only replaced the main unit, i kept the battery, sd-card, charger and so on. Now i have a working Desire again!

The DOA thread (did your 2nd(or more) device improved)?

Ok, so I returned my phone still in DOA period.
My problems were the glitching all over the place, and not just once a day, but it kept on getting worse, youtube, camera, browser, status bar, apps, multitasking, scrolling, keyboard, jumping white line in messages,etc...
Mine also was creaking arround the front camera and part of the corner of the screen there too.
My battery was displayed wrong all the time, so I couldn't see the right %.
Yellow bottom of on the screen.
Games were lagy, Tegra 3 and normal like teeter.
1 dead pixel.
Probably forgetting some problems now.
Somethings will be software, but because I(and most of us) don't know what is software I preffered to send it back before the doa period was over. Also some posters stated htv told them to send it back, witch problems same as mine.
Also if this is software for most of the part, than why isn't everybody getting the problems.
So I made this topic so you can tell what the problem was with your first device, and if you allready had your second (or third, etc) and what improved and what stayed the same... So you can we get a better vision on that.
My first phone arrived yesterday and is getting swapped out by a currier tomorrow for what will then be my second device.
The problems I am having is the jumping/bumping at the bottom of the screen; this is very inconsistant but does happen more often than it doesn't. For instance I was using the phone for 40 mins earlier it was happening, then for 10 mins it wasn't, again it happened for 5/6 mins and then didn't happen for around an hour but again its happening as we speak.
I've also had the problem whereby you can't unlock the device by pulling up the ring, and I have to shut down and startup the phone for this to be fixed. This has only happened twice so far; but again should not happen at all.
Lastly I have had the problem that when you lock the device the screen turns back on, even when you only pressed the lock button once.
I think thats everything... I do believe its software problems more than hardware, however as you have said why isn't this happening to everyone if that's the case. I guess you could look at it that maybe it is but they are either living with it or reporting it direct to where they purchased it from; either way they are not posting it on here. Who knows?
Now I do understand bugs are there in just about every phone and to be honest they are normally bugs you can live with until an update; the problem here is that the bugs are completely preventing the use of the device and/or making the use of the device very difficult. No phone should be released with this being the case.
One thing I do know for sure is that its happening to those who got the phone from a network (mines from Vodafone) and those who got it SIM free; in all areas or the world. This means they (Vodafone, Orange, O2 etc...) have not caused these problems so it eliminates any tweaks/software they may have placed onto the device meaning the problems do entirely lie with HTC to resolve. Lets just hope they do; or more importantly lets just hope its a small number of phones that are affected and that our replacements are okay.
I will let you know tomorrow what the second one is like... (sorry for the long post),
How did u notice a dead pixel
Sent From My HTC sensation (desire with rcmix s )
Phone turning back on after i pressed power button to lock the screen, got that too. But happens at random, so not always.
I saw a very tiny shiny spot when in a complete dark room, on a black background. Dead pixel i suppose.
Im considering getting it online but not sure what to do if i get a dead pixel

Send mine back because one of the 2 yellow spots didn't go away after 10hrs screen on (5 days) and I had some random restarts.
I don't want a faulty device, some devices will keep giving problems while others have no issues from the start.

You would be able to send it back if you bought it online, just like buying it from a shop. They have to give you the same period of support...

ummm....maybe the battery.Just try using a different one. If when u are plugged the phone works fine then it must be the battery...but really don't know. just guessing.
i tried reflashing the rooded official rom by nitr00..
it switched on by itself but it started to switch off when i inserted the sim card..
i then removed it and set up the phone.. but when i opened google maps it switched off again..
i then connected it to the charger and opened google maps it worked fine..
while connected to the charger i opened the camera app.. tried to take a picture and it switched off again.. please help me.. is it a battery problem or is the ram or processor fried.. please reply..
I'm no expert, but similar kinda things used to happen to my HD2 with Android....I used to turn on GPS or try and use maps or when it got above a certain temperature, it would shut off, or just simply reboot etc.
In the end, worked out it was a knackered phone, so sold it as 'spares or repair" on Ebay & bought the Desire HD.
No problems with this phone...touch wood!
I reckon something on the mainboard is going wrong.....tried turning it off, giving it a full charge, then turning it on and still happen?
Repair would prob, no, definitely cost more than a good condition model off Ebay...so either flog it as spares or repair and get another, or put the cash you get for it towards the HTC One X or something similar..yummy yummy!!
Matt
I concur that this is definatly a hardware issue since you have tried multiple roms.
A. My first question is the phone still on warranty? If no, then first I would try just getting a battery for your phone off of ebay ($4-$15 normally) thats 1600 mA + made for the Desire HD or Inspire 4g. (Both are virtually identicle).
If this does not fix the issue then I would say its a fault in your phones motherboard and I would look into getting a new phone or a good condition one on ebay (be careful with this, make sure you are buying from a reputable seller first)
B. If you're covered on your providers warranty still then I recommend taking it there to get fixed immediately cause if your warranty expires while your phone is en-route to them or before they finish repairs they will charge it as a non-warranty meaning your basically just buying a refurbished phone from them.

[Q] HOX self shuts down

Hi all, i'm having a big issue on one x with original 4.0.4 rom. The phone just keep shutting down while gaming taking photos, now also while updating apps. I thought that some app could cause this so i did an hard reset, and right after the initial set up, when i started updating the applications, it shutted down. I'm really worried, what is happening? could it be an hardware problem? Should i bring it back (it has warranty, i'm on stock rom)?
I noticed some log files in the memory, but after the hard reset it doesn't create them when it shuts down, while it did it before. any way to activate the log creation?
nobody can help me? today i tested it a while and it happened again 2 times, but this time whlie browsing (i use quick ics browser) and not while gaming. the second time when i rebooted it the battery indicator had a "!" on it, and it's not the first time, and it didn't recognize my sim.
Means that your phone is overheating, the battery being at or above 48c.
If you don't want to go down the modding route, then I suggest taking it back to the shop for a replacement.

Does your three soft buttons blink randomly? If so go to the service centre asap.
My cell overheated and burnt out.
It would not charge nor start. My cell to sometimes restarted itself automatically.
Do you keep many apps open in the background?
I had mine replaced and now its all smooth
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
it doesn't feel too hot, sometimes it's just cold and buttons don't blink. it simply show for a while "android system" (in italian) if i remember well and it shuts down normally with the htc logo. the strange thing is that thing with the battery and sim indicator. however i'll surely bring it back to the shop, i paid it 629 euros, i won't take it if it will shut down randomly. do they give you another one or i have to wait htc to repair it? :S i don't want to wait months.....
sorry for the double post, but now i'm sure that i will have to send it to htc so the question is another. Does someone have experience with htc reparations? how long will it take them to fix it and send it back to me?
My One X suffered from bad screen fitment out of the box (creaking, screen moving up and down inside the casing...) and I unlocked/rommed it before I noticed the flaws.
I relocked the bootloader, installed the 2.17 RUU, and sent the phone back to Germany (as it was bought in Ger and I live in Croatia) to get it repaired, they accepted it and repaired, it's on its way home now, should be here tomorrow, took 3 weeks to repair.
Positive experience for me.

Service is hit and miss from what I see on forums but I might also note that more people complain than praise.
I believe that with shipping and things its about 2 - 3 weeks in total for a repair.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
it's very much 3 weeks without my phone, but it's less then other brands... i really hope that one day they will use apples policy for this. it's the only thing that i like of it. if the phone isn't working you get another one immediately, then they can give yours to someone else, but it's not possible that i pay 630 euros and i have to send it to repair, wouldn't be the same for htc if they gave me another one, maybie a repaired one immediately? they can use mine later for some one else...

Even I had the same problem but I ready for modding,
Can you tell me what should i need to do for getting out such problem?
today i used it with apex launcher and it didn't shut down, even after 30 minutes of gta3 and 30 of dead trigger and some browsing- facebook ecc... now i'll try a day with sense but my question is: is there any way to flash the original rom from 0 ? doesn't factory reset delete just user file? maybie something else is corrupted. Can i flash the stock 4.0.4 without unlocking bootloaders or soing anything that voids my warranty? I'd like to try before changing it... THANK YOU
and today too it never rebooted with sense.... i don't know what to do. when the update to jellybeans will be available, there will be a way to flash it from zero with a ruu witout unlocking anything or void the warranty?
ok i asked to htc for the nearest point to repair my HOX and saturday i'll keep it there. Now it's unusable, it keeps shutting down.

Overheating solution ! Worked for me.

Well almost all HTC desire devices have an overheating problem causing them to reboot every time we use them.
Well I tried something that actually worked!
You need to have the required skills in order to do this
You need :
1:a clean soft brush(tooth brush recommended)
2:Tools to disassemble the HTC desire
3isassembly manual
4:Electric contact cleaner
Procedure :
1: Disassembly your HTC desire and just unplug only the mainboard and the upper board (that includes the camera)
2: CAREFULLY open the metallic box located to the main board (the one that is under the display and has the CPU inside)
3: use the electric contact cleaner and spray everything inside that box
4: CAREFULLY use the tooth brush to clean it from inside by making soft movements !!
5: wait for 5 minutes for the electric contact cleaner dissapears
6: Do the same in the camera mainboard but don't open anyone metallic box , just from the top
7: Start assembling the HTC desire
8: Test it and write down if it worked
Note : a friend of mine told me that you don't have to open the metallic box that protects the CPU,just use the electric cleaner and be sure that you have sprayed everything ! And this guide is tested on 4 HTC desires with the same problem all of them 100% success !
WARNING: USE THIS GUIDE AT YOUR OWN RISK ! I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY KIND OF DAMAGE!
I personally tested it as I said on 4 HTC desires and it worked !
Just test it and write it.I was looking for 1 year how to solve this problem and I believe I found the solution.

Hello,
This is the thread I was looking for since I got one HTC Desire with the message “repair it and take it, or throw it into trash”. Luckily for me, that was only few weeks ago, therefore I didn't suffered like other proud Desire owners.
I can power-on the phone but it will stuck on HTC logo or it will do reset loop (several times) finishing with 7 vibrations and HTC logo.
It was failing on RUU updates because of radio; then I decided to freeze phone (only device without battery, sd card and sim). After that, I was able to update the phone...freeze it again, s-off it...freeze it again...flash it with custom rom...freeze it....etc.
I was planning to apply some thermal compound inside and maybe cut some pieces for better airflow but Your solution seems great.
Is there any news about those 4 repaired phones? Are they still alive and performing well?
short update:
mine doesn't work after the procedure from first post.
however, it will still come alive (for the short time) after freezing. :/
Interesting post. is overheating a common problem on the desire?
My phone seems to crash every so often and sometimes gets really bad and doesnt wanna start up as mentioned above so am thinking whether its a overheating issue rather than software/hardware

When your phone doesn't want to boot, put it in the freezer for 5 minutes. If it then boots normally, it's an overheating issue.

I have disassembled the phone. There is a metal box on the back of the main board (directly behind the
sim card and sd cards slots) though it appears to be completely sealed. I do not see how it could be opened
and/or how the contact cleaner can get in to do anything.

I totally disagree with your opinion to apply thermal compound and cut some pieces. Thermal compound works for pc and in case you apply this, think that the hot will still remain inside and maybe get worse. Also cutting pieces will result for your phone to fail, cause all this are made to protect all those that they include
other solution
For users that are EXPERIMENTAL ONLY! you can try this
Follow all the steps in post #1 but when you reach to the cpu chipset, use a heat gun for about 30 second with distance up to 10cm(maybe more).Do whatever is needed to be sure that heat will not touch the other chipsets. This solution have 40-60% Success- Failure. In case of failure, (I DONT HAVE RESPONSIBILITY!) the phone will be dead for ever. If you have free time and this phone for test then do it otherwise better not
Also i will try to find an HTC Desire to take screenshots ...
