Lo all.
I've been cursing Orange for their apparent treachery with the Android 2.2 Froyo inclusion of Wifi Hotspot feature which does exactly sweet ****le.
So tonight I set about investigating how to Root it so I could load up a stock HTC ROM, which from what I've read in every corner of the internet this last week, should allow me to tether my netbook - just like I used to get without any trouble with my old K800i/Bluetooth and lately with my Desire+USB cable.
As I type this, I'm on my netbook, coming to you over Orange 3G+, and at the same time the Desire is also able to pull 3G for it's own browser use. This is perfect, exactly as it should have been. I'll explain exactly what I've done with crystal clarity for everyone who's been getting dead ends from both Useless Orange Customer Service and Useless HTC Customer Service for the last two weeks.
I *HAVE* rooted the phone tonight (yayyy) using the Unrevoked utility - which is very slick, thank you to those guys - I especially liked being told things were successful and triumphant during various reboots while it did its Thing.
However, while it does apparently load you up with a new ROM - "ClockwordMod Recovery" I don't fully understand why my phone's still Orange branded, with all the Orange settings intact. That's a job for Other People to talk about tho. The reason I'm mentioning this is in case it's been at all relevant to the menus I've changed setting for - I don't remember seeing them before, so if you read below and you don't have the menus I mention, then you should go ahead and do the Unrevoked process. Ask elsewhere for details on it if you're not sure.
ANYWAY, here's what to set in your Desire's settings to deal with Orange's bullsheeat;
From your homescreen;
Menu/settings/Wireless&Networks/Mobile networks/Access Point Names
You should see the following three APNs;
Orange Internet
Consumer Broadband
Orange MMS
(that "consumer broadband" one is the one I don't remember seeing before, but I may have been blind. If you don't have it, go ahead and {assuming it's a clean factory-issue Orange Desire obviously} Unrevoke your Desire!)
Select Consumer Broadband
CHANGE the APN from "consumerbroadband" to "orangeinternet"
CHANGE the Username from <Not set> to "Orange"
CHANGE the password from <Not set> to "Multimedia"
Make sure you use the capital first letters exactly as I've typed them there. Oh, and don't type the " marks. I'm sure if you're smart enough to use XDA-Dev you already know that, but no harm in stating it for the n00blets.
Authentication type should be set to CHAP. Make sure, I think it was anyway but just check.
Press your Menu button, tap "Save"
And that's it.
Switch on your "Wifi Hotspot" in your usual way, search and connect from your lappie, surf the bejesus out of those pesky Orange ratbags. Meanwhile your phone keeps its own connection side by side your tethered hotspot - that's what the "Orange Internet" settings alter, so don't mess with those.
Don't forget to use one of the WPA security methods of course, otherwise some cheeky knob-jockey will definitely enjoy your Orange account's data capacity right up to the hair.
OK, I'm done, carry on. o7
I just tested this, I added the settings you mentioned and I can say.......it works! Nice one bruv! I haven't rooted either.thank you for this!

Phew. Good. Means I did indeed totally fail to notice the "Consumer Broadband" APN section before though. Doh.
I guess we can infer that Orange intends to use the Consumer Broadband APN settings for chargeable tethering packages at a future point then. Very cheeky.
I bet it was this evil genius plan that held up the Orange Froyo rollout.
To anyone who's got a 2.2 Desire who's NOT on Orange UK and who DOES have their Wifi Hotspot feature working fully after getting Android 2.2 Froyo without any messing around - could you post here and tell us if you've got the two separate Mobile Data APNs I mentioned above? I have a suspicion you've only got one...?
Mines Stock htc desire 2.2 (Not rooted) and o2 sim. Only 1 setting for everything. mms, gprs and wifi hot spot.
Not one issue at all.
You Legend Roger_Dodger
That is brilliant. I have NO IDEA how you managed to come up with that Roger_Dodger but that seems to have worked for me! I am on a normal Orange with NO ROOT!

I guess that settles it then, seems to me it's definitely a ploy for Orange to subsequently charge us for tethering on smartphones. Bugger that. I pay for my bundle as it is thanks.
New request: Any network gurus here who know the mechanics of How This Works able to tell us whether Orange, or indeed any mobile provider, can tell whether data is being drawn is being pulled by the phone itself for its own use or is being sucked over a tether?
Oh, can I also say - Conman Maples, the Orange PR guy who many of you doubtless follow on Twitter (conorfromorange), while of some limited value, should be treated exactly as he is, *PR* - people seem to miss that he's a PUBLIC RELATIONS guy? Like Max Clifford but not as sharp? His JOB, his FUNCTION, is to paint Orange in good light.
Works good. No idea how you managed to figure that. Again on a non root.
Cheers dude.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Cheers dude. I was wondering why it wasn't working when I found your post. Works like a charm now. Impressed!

Really, is there a way for Orange to know whether I'm using the internet on my phone or I'm tethering the connection?

Hi new to this this has worked fine no thanks to orange but could you tell me where to set wpa settings I am using a htc desire thanks

I have the Tmobile dash and want to run AT&T on it without having all the junky tmobile software (ESPECIALLY THE STARTUP ANIMATION). Is there a Rom that could be used to have software with AT&T stuff on it?
Just wanted to ask. Friend wants this phone but with AT&T stuff on it.

None that I know of. All of the ROMs besides T-Mo officials are gonna display either Rogers or HTC screens. Nothing with AT&T since AT&T doesn't carry the Excalibur.
HTC screen would work. just so long as not tmobile. will have to see what is a good rom to use that does not have the myfaves junk or the other stuff. any good recommendations on roms that work good for it?
Thanks for the help.

Try out Ricky's v23 ROM. It has a lot of programs on it, but they're *useful*. Also, it's Windows Mobile 6.1, which is hot hot hot.

There's also some steps you can also perform to add custom startup splash screens, Now granted it will still show either the tmobile or htc first screen (depending on the rom you have) and then the windows mobile screen after that , but the 3rd screen, where applicable can be changed to whatever 320 X240 .gif image and the startup and shutdown sounds can also be changed too. So in other words, although you will have the HTC screen if you chooses kavana's or rick's ROM you can still create a custom At&t ( or find one) .gif image to be displayed at startup. Here's the link for instructions for that.

Read the stickys on upgrading. Jocky made a bypass for offical ROMs and 6.1 doesnt even need it
Got this all setup for my Tmobile Wing. Whohoo. Now looking at the Dash on trying to setup the AT&T settings for Internet and MMS, etc.
Any clues? Easy to do on Wing with touchscreen and more options to choose from.
I have it updated with the HTC 1.33.422.1 (Worldwide English, WM6) ROM. (Didn't want the Tmobile one)
Thanks,

Have you tried the AT&T website? T-Mobile's site has the settings for MMS and Internet, so AT&T's may have the same.
They're also posted in the wiki. I've been looking for someone to test them out to see if they actually work with AT&T.

Found the settings in the wiki. Gonna try them out and will let you know.
UPDATE: This is with Factory Tmobile WM6 ROM.
Going by these settings:
# MMSC settings for MMS:

Start > Messaging > Scroll to MMS > Menu > Settings > MMSC Settings
* Name is AT&T MMS
* MMSC is http://mmsc.cingular.com
* Data connection is The Internet
* Gateway is WAP 2.0 Gateway
* IP Address is 66.209.11.32
* Port is 80
* Encoding is Binary (DO NOT SEE THIS OPTION ANYWHERE)
* Click "done"
#
Then in Send Options
* Priority is normal
* Validity period is maximum (DO NOT SEE THIS AREA AT ALL)
* Deffered Delivery is immediate (DO NOT SEE THIS AREA AT ALL)
* Click "done"
#
Then in Receive Options (DO NOT SEE THIS AREA AT ALL)
* Home and roaming reception is automatic
* Allowed message types: informational, advertisement, auto
These settings from the Wiki are for the "From AT&T's settings support page for the Motorola Q Global"
Unless the MotoQ has alternate settings you can choose.
I even did not see alot of those settings using the HTC ROM for the Excalibur either.

Well if you live in LA Tmobile cell service is not the greatest great service for texting though. that's why I use AT&T. They were alot better when they were Cingular. AT&T are very arrogant, JMO.

1. Tmobile in my area SUCKS!! Always has, always will. Customer service was rotten to the core. Even the local representatives were arrogant and not very helpful.
2. Tmobile told me before when I kept losing signal or had no signal that it was my phone. I unlocked it and kept Tmobile SIM card in and still had issues. Tried AT&T SIM card in it and got full complete signal. Tmobile didn't know what they were talking about.
3. AT&T has always been good to me. Not to mention I get a corporate discount of 25% off my bill and accessories. None of this with Tmobile.
4. Tmobile never, never would give any type of deal on phones. Had to beg and plead and they still wouldn't. With AT&T I got 4 phones (2 samsung, LG, and my Tilt) totaling $1500 for $50 after rebates, etc. Could not pass this deal up.
5. Tmobile been promising for last year and half for 3G. Still don't have it up and if they do it is just in the beginning stages. That was a condition I had when I signed up. Talked to local rep and even called customer service when I signed up in May 2007. They told me by end of 2007 that 3G would be available. It is just now getting there if even that.
6. But I would still like to be able to use my Wing as a backup in case. So still trying settings out to get it to work, even though it will never have 3G on it.

Hi
Just got this phone through today and I quite like it but i hate what orange have done to it. this whole unique manager etc is a big pile of the steaming smelly stuff you have no idea if it's using wifi or your data mins!
so really what i won't to know is does any one know how to get rid of this and if you can't can someone point me in the direction of a decent Rom for it and a guide to flashing it, I wan't a rom thats reasonably close to the htc original, but also if all goes wrong and i have to send it back to orange for a fault can it be put back to the original orange rom.
I have tried searching but i am a little overwhelmed by all the posts and roms, I don't want to get it wrong on my first one and totaly ruin my nice shiny phone.
oh why did orange have to mess with it?
cheers
Tom

Orange Issue
I am also having problems as I can not connect to any WIFi and can not find a way of changing the Wifi Power management.
Orange
I have had a call from Orange and the suggestion was to have a look at the HTC Web site and see if there was anything to help there.
I have just spent the last 3 days reading this site (don't tell the boss) and i have just this moment burned a fairly original htc rom on to it so that i can get rid of all the orange stuff.
so far it's much better and i get the msn messenger back as well, have a look at the jade part of this forum, you need to install hardspl which will enable you to dump the rom and install the new one on the phone, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=483465
then dump the current rom for backup http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=448776
now download and use this Kitchen http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=441872 in this package you have all the files to make the original htc rom and also restore your backup rom.
just have a read of some of these threads and you will be able to go back to htc original rom. you will need to do some leaps of faith with some of it, but i have just done it and it's worked fine, I made sure i had the backup though!
cheers

Hi Tom, just wanted to say thanks for the links and info - I've now successfully flashed one of ironeagle's lean-cut ROMs and the awful Unique Manager is gone!
I have a stock Touch Diamond as well and the performance of the 3g with the Orange ROM in comparison was dreadful. This new one is nice and zippy.
Ironeagle’s ROMs
Hi BexxBexx
Did you simply run JadeHard-SPL_V41 and then install one of Ironeagle’s ROMs
I presume that this will remove all the Orange rubbish and become SIM free?
I also presume that GPS and WIFI are all working ok?
Thanks
Dave
Does UMA/Unique Still work with HTC Rom
Hi, I also have Orange HTC Touch and do find the Unique/WiFi control unclear as to what service it is using, I have no signal at home so I know it has to be using the wifi despite the phone saying 3G. I wondered if those who have tried different ROM's have still got the use of Orange Unique/UMA i.e. can make calls & SMS's via the wifi network. I have to have this facility as no signal at home. I had blackberry's before & they were great for using the WiFi but I read that if you removed the orange branding (e.g. had an unlocked phone) you lost this however I did use BB OEM updated ROM & was still OK but underneath I still got the orange startup so assume still branded. Also very easy to restore previous firmware if problems. BB (RIM) released about 5 or 6 updated firmwares over about a year, Orange Never released any specific so I am not holding breath for HTC/Orange ROM. HTC do have an updated one on their WWW but if I put my serial number in says not suitable. V. Strangely at home 90% time I get the green house OK saying wifi conencted & can phone/sms fine using this but if I try to connect to the internet it say no connection, try again a few minutes later after some swithing on/off and it might work. No set pattern to make it work.
i would be very keen to know if this works as well with regards to retaining UMA ability once orange software has been removed
Just a small follow up, does not help me but the more info the better - I found on digitalspy forum that someone had located WLan settings on the htc touch 3g.
Basically File Explorer/Windows/WLANSettings there is a little more info & you can change the Power settings - I had read others benefited by changing power save mode to best performace they got a better wifi connection, Mine was on best battery & changed to Best Performance, but I still do not get a reliable connection to my WiFi, but it may lead onto something.
Not bothered me much before as unlimited data anyway but been in Italy and and wanted to use the hotel wifi but not being able to turn off gsm I could not be sure what network it was using and would have cost a fortune on EU roaming data charges so simply could not risk using the phone for any browsing.
Thanks
This forum is the best!
Just got rid of the Orange branding. As a minimum is now says "WiFi" instead of Unique Phone and no annoying Orange World references. And Google Maps is on as standard!
I called Orange before I did it to for info on Unique Phone. They dont know a lot! They think you have to be connected via an Orange router - which I dont have anyway. But they are not sure.
From what I can make out Unique Phone is UMA. Re previous post - don't know if it still works after de-branding (or if it work before de-branding!) because I dont know how to tell if it is working! No indications AFAICS. I would have thought there would have been settings for UMA - server etc. Or am I being thick!
Anyway - here is a question ..................off topic but relevant I think! (Ok - shoot me down then!)
I have just changed tarriff to included unlimited internet. I had a e650 before (de-branded that one also!) and used wifi all the time but I have never ever used internet via GSM ever.
So the question.....how do you know what you are using to access the internet if your wifi is on? Does it favour wifi if it is connected? The reason I want to know this is so that I do not use GSM internet while roaming abroad.
Thanks again guys for all your hard work. In a way I am glad Orange mess about with the phones - gives us something to search for on 'tinternet !
Not really helping you but for info. to others from my experience.
The Touch 3g, "Unique" is UMA and works surprisingly well. 95% of time it connects for calls & sms's (I know its using the router as I don't have GSM signal at home) I have Orange broadband with a livebox and it all routes through this although the phone actually connects to a Buffalo router so you can us AP's and increase range very well & easily'ish.
The bizarre thing I find is despite the phone clearly connecting via wifi for calls etc. the internet only works 60% of the time, I think the rest of the time because it can't find a gsm signal is complains. A restart, few fiddles with settings and it works again, but not set pattern or reasons won't work,
very Random!
Normally you would know you are connected to the wifi because the Access Points name would be displayed, prob. next to you network provider and with previous (even) orange branded BlackBerry's its clear and obvious, however with this 3g and the fact it can connect to UMA for calls etc & (I'm guessing) tries for gsm for internet I would be a little anxious. You may be lucky now you have debranded and be able to switch OFF the network signal only. I could always do this with BB's so it could ONLY use wifi. Why the #!#!#! you can't with orange's Touch 3g I fail to comprehend. As I said in my post above, fortunately I have unlimited and don't really need internet at home but could not risk using whilst abroad.
What firmware did you use to de-brand?
I followed this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=441872 - the kitchen contained everything. I never changed anything - just used what was in it. Admit I was a bit concerned - but is worked fine and then I had a gin and tonic to calm down
In terms of the Unique Phone - when I rang Orange they were not sure if a livebox was needed or not. I dont have a livebox but heyho I dont have Unique Phone any longer so it is immaterial to me now!
As regards the GPRS - I now just edit the Access Point name - take last letter away from orangeinternet and it will not connect. So now I can switch it on and off as required. So I switch it off when abroad - I have unlimited in the UK.
Orange UMA on HTC Touch 3G (business contract) - problems like rest of you guys...
It's reassuring to read I'm not the only one with problems with my upgrade from Orange.
I was told that their UMA phones would help me get around a patchy signal issue out in my (garden) office, which is connected via Cat5e cable to the Netgear router in the house. Here in the office I now use an old Netgear WG602 WAP connected via a switch & Cat5e cable to the router (only 45m, about 50yards in old money, away). Orange have now said I can't get support as I'm not using their Broadband (we have BT Internet) & their Livebox, but they originally said the UMA feature worked with any wireless network (which it does about 2/3rd of the time). The rest of the time the green house isn't there, just the red or the grey house appear in the status bar or in Unique Manager.
I quite like the phone, as a phone & SMS device, as it is way lighter than my old HTC Ty-Tn II (brick) & I am happy with Orange (as I have been with them for over 15 years now for both business & personal use), so I don't want to go unlocked etc. Also the Business Support side of things is, I have heard from personal customers, way better also.
But this bloody UMA is driving me round the u-bend. This (below) is a post I put up on another forum & I'm hoping someone here can shed light on how to tweak both the phone's UMA settings & our WAP's, so I can get it to work 99% of the time via wi-fi when the Orange GSM signal fails.
I am frustrated at having been convinced by Oranges’ answer to a poor signal reception issue in my area: we (Orange) now have a limited – yes VERY – selection of phones that use UMA to continue or route a new call over a w-fi- connection instead of GSM. Well we jumped for it, but they didn’t say we’d have similar dropped connection problems via UMA over our wireless service (provided by BT Internet & Netgear WAP & Router. They have flatly refused any support for the HTC 3G Touch I have got on a 24 month contract (been with Orange for 15 + years) because we aren’t using Orange Broadband or their router. I’m fairly certain it is a software configuration issue (both what settings I need to use on the phone & the WAP need tweaking), but they are unable to assist. Can you help at all? I have a reasonable IT understanding even though I’m just a “bricks & mortar” builder. Many thanks, Rob
Can anyone help me out please.
You may already but could check Settings/connections/connections/advanced/select network/ and make sure both on Orange internet (or your ISP) rather than having "my work network" on either. Not sure if it will help but I think I had intermittant UMA when I left the 2nd on "my Work".
I have a 3g touch working quite well with UMA, rarely I get the red house & I restart the phone & it tends to be OK. I do however use Orange Broadband and the Livebox as modem, but had a variety of routers & WAP's, Belkin & now Buffalo that all have tended to work wuite well.
I have had good results with the Blackberrys also, 8120 & 8220 flip, in some ways better that the touch 3g.
Hi Guys,
I have been following this forum for years, but have never had the need to post til now.
Coming from a G1, I've just made the transition to a glorious Desire on a Orange UK 'Panther' tariff, from Phones4u.
One of the highlights of the tariff is fee access to their Orange Maps app (supposively pre installed), which I'm told is a semi-decent sat-nav software. But I found no reference to it, or any other pre-installed Orange crap on my phone. After spending over 30 mins on the phone with an strong indian accented Orange Rep named 'Ricky' (suprisingly better informed then the usual monkeys*), it seems I was sold a generic Desire phone from Phone4u with none of Orange's pre-installed crap....YESSS!!!
Here is the issue, it seems you cannot get access to the Orange Maps app from a non-orange branded phone. More specifically you can not access h**p://orangeworld.co.uk which has links to download it from a generic phone. Even though i'm paying for the service as part of tariff.... frekkin Toasters!!!**
In my determination to stick it to the man, I have found what may be a solution, but do not know how to apply it to the Desire. The following thread with a non-obvious title: "How to install Orange Maps on non Orange Firmware" (google it, can't hyperlink it, as I'm a new poster), has a solution for a Samsung phone and I'm wondering if I could get it to work on the desire:
The fix.
1) Enter Admin setting menu *#5239870*#
...........
5) goto number 7, UAgent
should look something like this:
SAMSUNG-S8000/S8000
XEII2 SHP/VPP/R5
Jasmine/1.0
Nextreaming
SMM-MMS/1.2.0
.......
change the second line to this:
POIG1 SHP/VPP/R5
so it now looks like this
SAMSUNG-S8000/S8000
POIG1 SHP/VPP/R5
Jasmine/1.0
Nextreaming
SMM-MMS/1.2.0
.....
save and exit.
Click to collapse
what is a uAgent and how do I change it on the Android OS? Will it even fix my issue?
Whilst the maps is a feature I want, I'm not desperate enough to cancel my contract => goto new contract with Orange phone with Orange ROM. So It'd be great if someone could help.
Many Thanks,
Digital_Apoc
Update: Ok so it seems I can't access orangeworld.co.uk via WiFi on my phone but CAN over 3g if I switch off the WiFi??? Still going the the maps page gives me "Sorry byt Orange Maps will not work on your handset...." though the desire is on the support list...

Definition of Ironic:
Text from Orange...
"Welcome to Orange and your Panther plan. Get started and setup your inclusive services by clicking h*tp://orangeworld.co.uk/r/panther"... lol
I had that installed for around a day before I flashed my desire with the generic Rom to get rid of all the orange cr4p. If I remember it looked just like google maps which is free unless someone can tell me differently.
I tried to set it up, as it was free, on my Orange branded handset. I kept getting an error about not being able to set it up correctly; this is quite common on this phone it seems. The app itself was installed but the maps would not download/configure correctly.
I rang tech support for another issue and they told me that the phone is listed as not compatible with Orange maps, god knows why it comes installed on their ROM. So until they either update the program (or more likely enabled a flag saying the Desire can use Orange maps) we probably won't be able to download it. That said you might be able to get the apk from somewhere? May just be tech support were lying/drunk
I flashed my handset with a generic ROM to get rid of all the Orange garbage anyway and now I can't even re-install the app itself using the link from Orangeworld (You can text 'Orange Maps' to 247).
I seem to only be able to access the orangeworld portal using a gprs/edge connection, it doesn't like umts it seems. Maybe someone with it stilll installed could try setting it up over a 2g data connection?
Sorry I can't be of more help, good luck =D
I used it when I first got my phone but it was pretty rubbish to say the least, google maps navigation is a much better product.
With Google maps navigation available, what's the point in sticking with Orange Maps providing you don't download more than your FUP permits.
I hate what Orange have done to this phone. The salesman on the phone even lied to me saying that they were using a generic ROM.
Are you sure you can't visit h**p://orangeworld.co.uk on a generic rom? Make sure you go via the Orange APN and not through a wireless network as that is not allowed.
I'm a bit confused by this.
My Orange Desire (I'm on panther) once charged first time, I tried to connected straight to the net and the phone seeked the settings and worked without any intervention. In fact I think it did it right at the beginning when gmail wanted to synch.
A few hours later I debranded, and upon reboot.. the same thing, was all automatic.

yes this ^
why do you need to go to orangeworld anyway? there's nothing of any value there
Orange Maps
You don't say but I assume yo're in the UK? FWIW I tried the Orange App and it wasn't a patch on the updated Google Maps with Navigation. It was sloooow and poor definition. So IMHO, forget it!
The commets about only connecting to Orange World through the 3G I can also confirm, but I have no idea why they'd want to do that...?
I agree use google maps navigation, coming from using TomTom on WinMo I prefer Google Nav, only thing I miss is the speed camera updates and custom voices, the google one is crap

In your cellular settings you will have to add the apn data to get the data going.
Can't help much more without knowing your provider.
Helps to download the Nokia Connections app.
If you are using it on other carriers, you will need to configure the APN. There are two ways to do it;
1. You can maunally add the APN of your carrier to the phone but you will not get MMS working.
2. You need an app called Network Setup from Nokia to switch the connections to your carrier if it is in the list. This will switch both data connection and MMS.

We're glad to have you here with us. Our world is much better, and has a far more promising future.
//Side-note// That little green thing is supposed to be an android? How? It looks more like a little green trash can or MAYBE an alien...
android (plural androids) + Noun
A robot that is designed to look and act like a human (usually male)
That thing looks like a human? Google has NO reason that they weren't able to do a search to make sure they knew what the word android meant... I mean, I guess it's a bit ironic... But that little green trash can is NOT an android.
Dont get me wrong, i like android, it has some features that complement me much better, i just wanted a phone that works and the lumia 900 works and looks great. My old lg optimus 2x just had crap for support and the OS that LG created was very buggy. Maybe someday i'll return to android but i wanted something that is smoother. so far so good.
Oh, to be clear, I like Android too... I was just pointing out that the little green thing isn't really an android by definition... I may have been inebriated at the time I posted that ;\
Courtesy of a very good deal while I was in the USA, I was able to pick up an HTC One M8 for $100. Seemed like a great deal for my first Android phone running 4.4.2. Talked with their support people, to guarantee it wasn't locked, confirmed that with a couple of web sites, then bit the bullet. Now I am back in China, using China Telecom, which is compatible with respect to data transmission, and both voice and SMS works fine.
But data, with a 4G SIM, doesn't work at all. Nor does 3G, or 2G. Oh yes, we have no chickens (G in Mandarin sounds like 'ji', which means chicken). Investigating things, it seems that this is because in trying to configure the phone APN for China Telecom, there is a required field which Verizon doesn't display: PPP. Without a way to set up PPP field to #777, there is no way to get the phone to talk China Telecom's network. Additionally, even when I try to save the APN information, it resets fields like MNC (CT requires 03) back to the Verizon value of 11. WTF? Obviously, it is time for me to venture into the world of a custom ROM, since that might make all the things I need visible. Decided to go with Android Revolution ROM.
I rooted my device with Weaksauce, downloaded all the required files, and was looking into custom recovery when Verizon pushed to me that an upgrade for my phone was available (4.4.3). Decided WTH, maybe that will expose the PPP entry that I need.
Nope, Weaksauce no longer works (and I didn't get to the point of S_off before that happened). the APN menu is now completely locked (with no ability to change anything or create new APN entries), and now I am concerned that Verizon has hosed my ability to get this phone working in China as anything other than a wi-fi capable data machine.
As a first timer delving into this world, I would appreciate some quick pointers to make sure I am going in the right direction.
Thanks in advance.
If you can read Chinese, the settings are supposed to be as follows for the APN:
