Starhub user come in!! - Desire General

Come in discuss what rom and radio you are using and how is the 3G connection.
Maybe we can help each other find the best radio for Starhub!

ROM: cyanogenmod nightly build 130
Radio: 5.11.05.14
APN: shinternet
Reception's not bad, mostly at full bar. For surfing is quite ok, can see facebook photos, youtube videos. Not exatly fast, but tolerable.

Maybe starhub is not giving enough love to android users but mostly to iPhone users. Hehehe.. 3G connection on hero & desire can totally suck balls!

[Q] Quadrant and Speedtest.com results

Please note I post this in the dev section because I assume you guys would be the most knowledgeable. I live in NYC where 4G just became available. I am not running anything worth mentioning on my EVO. Just rooted with a custom kernel and OC'd using setCPU. I've been getting what I believe to fairly good Quadrant and Speedtest.com results. My highest speedtest result is 11.09mb down and 1.00mb up. Quadrant score is 14.88 which left "my device" at the top of the results chart. Just curious if these results are normal or a little better than average as the few results I have come across don't seem to be anywhere near as good. Thanks guys.
I got similar quadrant, but as for 4g, it's not official for CA, but I do get about 8mbs

Well quadrant is above normal but then again your using set CPU so is normal score on sense I have gotten 1500 and 1600 and about 4G sounds really good, I usually get 5-6mpbs download but your in a new market so t could be eaitheir your close to the antenna or not alot peopple is using 4G yet

No disrespect at all. Honestly figured you guys were the ones that work so hard to make our devices run as fast as possible so you'd be the ones to talk to. I've been obsessed with these scores for about a month and while I haven't looked into it too much, the scores I have come across don't seem as high. It's not like I even attempted to get these results just the usual tinkering. I remember back in my BlackBerry days everyone would compare up times. This is even more addictive lol. I'll keep working on improving my scores but you guys are the ones that I thank and enjoy learning from. I've been a follower of xda for a while and look forward to participating now. In the correct threads and sections of course

I had full bars before it was officially rolled out here too. I'm under no impression that I'm getting unheard of speeds but my area does seem to have above average 4G coverage. Like I said I'm pretty knowledgeable regarding Android from an average user stance but as far as development I'm a total noob and am really enjoying learning from you guys and theses scores have me excited that I'm off on a solid start.

to get a better idea, we should run the speed test 3 times (take the average) at a few different points during the day (morning, afternoon, evening, night?) in the same place, then take the overall average... this will give you a more accurate whole picture.
might be a good idea to put where you live in there as well.
using the above method (3 simultaneous tests, 1 morning, 1 afternoon, 1 evening, 1 night), my results are as follows... both radios were tested in the same location at the approximate same times a week apart. I'm in eastside seattle:
26.02.01.15:
DOWN: ~4.8mbps
UP: ~3.5mbps
26.06.04.27 (w/ updated lib files):
DOWN: ~5.4mbps
UP: ~3.9mbps
noticeable (not just placebo effect) decrease in browser loading times and GPS is much better for me. switching from towers seems to be quicker as well - my phone used to hang for 10-15 secs going from 3G to H, now it's almost instant even in the middle of communication. have been extremely happy with 26.06.02.27 so far... I may try some other radios just for testing, but I'm scared to screw up what is already a pretty solid setup.
You should also note that just because your phone has the "H" icon in the status bar, doesn't mean that you're on the "4G" network (which technically is HSPA+). The H can refer to HSUPA (instead of HSPA+), and it will often stay on H even when you're down on UMTS (3G). I don't even have HSPA+ "4G" in my area, being told that its on the way in the coming months, and H is lit up all the time, but its just HSUPA.
Something to think about.
That being said, I generally get about 1.9mbps down, 1.9mbps up on HSUPA. Stock radio.

I average between 4.5mb up to 8mb depending on data traffic and my uploads average around 2.5mb
I think most of it just has to do w/ the coverage in your particular area.
I get the "H" icon a lot at home, but my speeds are usually < 1 mb as you can see:

The most recent amazingly fast ones are taken at my work.
I'm getting an average of 4.2 Mbps using the stock radio.

Network speeds are affected by much more than simply your radio version or ROM type. See my post above for explanation of the "H" icon in your taskbar for a little look into that.
You can flash your radio independent of your ROM, some people get better performance with other radios, but I've gotten consistent performance with my stock radio and a few different ROMs.

Yes, you must be rooted to flash new radios. Unless you're having network issues, and you're happy with your speeds (I hope you are at avg 4.2mbps) then there's no need to be flashing different radios.

Running virtuous v1.0.1
I only get 350kbs-1.5mbs download and 800kbs-1.5mbs up. The upload isn't the problem. The best download I have ever gotten was 2.2mbs in my area (with the H or 3G+ symbol and 3-4 bars). I did get 3.5mbs download once, but that was on the other side of town.
Just to clarify, when I said 4.2 mbs was my average, I meant my average at the moment. I did 3 tests.
Although, my average overall is usually about 2.5-3 mbs which is still good enough for me. Just hate when I randomly get Edge out of nowhere.
Best speed I ever recorded was 5.37mbs late in the afternoon a month ago or so.

Man I thought I lived in a **** town because I only saw 6.5mbps max when our phones are capable of easy double digits. Especially when I see some people having screenies showing cell speeds of like 9 or 13mbps. I guess I have nothing to ***** about.
Although I have found I can do just about anything I really need my phone to do if I have atleast 1.5.
I only get like 5mbps downloaded and 2mbps uploaded. I really dont think that the 4g network isnt completely up yet but the speeds are okay with me.

[Q] TMobile G2 speeds suck in good data area?

I got a G2 (HTC Vision) a few days ago, and it was already rooted. I have no clue about rom development, kernels, etc for the G2 and was wondering why it was running so slow. Also under set cpu, what speed should I clock it to?
It is running 2.3.3 with the kernel 2.6.32.28-cyanogenmod-g4f4ee2e [email protected] #1
the rom i believe is cm7-htc vision, build number GRI40
Well am not using CM7 not a big fan but the devs are awesome. Anyways on setcpu put max to 1.5 GHZ and Min to 1 GHZ. Am not really sure why your g2 is slow. Maybe you can reflash the rom or maybe you have to many wigets/Apps running.
Sent from my HTC Desire Z/G2 Using XDA Premium App
Having "too many apps" shouldn't affect your data speed nor should overclocking it do anything. Your data is WHAT it is, WHERE it is. For example, at home I get HSPDA (the H) and get a max of 1010 kb/s where as to the parking lot at my job, I can get an average of 1400kb/s. Which is a huge difference. Both are still fast (roughly 1mb/s to 1.4mb/s per second.. not to be confused with Mbits) It all depends on your location and the actual signal you get there. Just test it out a little around town or when you're out of town and you'll see. I suggest using speed test to get accurate results.

I certainly know that overclocking have nothing to do with it. But up until now, my area always give me a good 2.3mbps at most. I have gotten below 1mbps on my g2 so i raised the minimum cpu setting and got higher speeds. Thanks though.

Safe but not very useful. Above 1 GHz the gains are negligible. I say setting the min at 1GHz is a little silly though. I can't see how he's getting good battery life with it constantly running that high.

Underwhelmed by the Sprint Samsung E4GT (SPH-D710)

The firmware on my wife's SPH-D710 was just upgraded to FH13. Based on my reading here, that upgrade included an improvement to the 3G modem. If that is true, this is a pretty sad phone - let me explain.
I downloaded Speedtest to my phone, a 2+ year old HTC EVO and here phone. I then ran Speedtest on both. (Actually, it was much harder than that. The GPS on her phone was simply not working, and Speedtest thought I was near Wichita, not southeast Michigan. Even after rebooting to get the GPS working, Speedtest still thought I was hundred of miles form here. Fortunately, the second-to-last server listed overlapped with the servers listed on my phone.)
To be clear: I did one phone then the next. I turned off the WiFi and help both phones in the same location.
HTC EVO: Ping - 192 ms, download - 2531 kbps, upload - 612 kbps
Samsung E4GT: Ping - 173 ms, download - 1789 kbps, upload - 520 kbps
The only difference is that my phone is rooted and I am running AdFree, but that certainly cannot account for the huge difference in performance.
I was actually quite pleased with my wife's phone until I a) ran headlong into the very poor GPS performance and b) saw the poor modem performance. I understand now why HTC phones cost more...

I thought it was common knowledge that the antennas on the e4gt were a little weaker than most, that seems to be a common trend in Sammy phones. If you want strong antennas I'd recommend Motorolla, however the software on their phones is ****. Motoblur, bleh. Regardless, Samsung still makes the best phones on the market and smother everything else out right now. The S2 helds its title until the S3 came out, nothing tops a Sammy phone but another Sammy I believe the smooth performance and top of the line GPU/CPU/screen is a good trade off.
My apologies if this sounded like a troll message. My wife's phone is clearly faster than mine with regard to processing speed. This is clearly noticeable when updating apps. My post was more a matter of disappointment - why it should clearly excel in some areas but seem to fall flat on others, especially given that it is a much newer device.
I just downloaded and installed Quadrant Standard on both phones. My perceptions were correct - the Samsung is MUCH faster than the EVO. So, again I ask/wonder, why the much slower 3G speed and poor GPS performance?

Your Samsung radio is not going to do better than the HTC radio, first and foremost you have to accept that. Then you can move on to trying out other modems in an attempt to improve signal and download/upload speeds.
There's a LONG list of them that have been released since back in February; you'll find the downloads for each in a stickied post in the development. It doesn't matter what kernel or ROM you are running, you can swap out modem builds at will. If one doesn't work, flash another but always make sure you update profile & PRL after each flash and before running any sort of speed tests.

Happy flashing!

Fh13 is battery improvements, if you update your prl that will help with download speeds. There are way to many variables for data speeds to get reliable info. 1.7 mbs download is damn good on 3g, I wish I got those speeds, I get .5 MBS if I'm lucky in Sacramento, ca. So anyway unless you have one of the lte phones that Sprint offers there is no better phone then the S2. And those phones are by no means leaps and bounds ahead of this one.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Thanks for the feedback. I am not an expert with regard to these matters and had assumed that a) the the newer phone would have a faster modem than the older one and b) the download speeds I recorded were not out of the ordinary. My expectations have been reset and I will enjoy her phone (when I can) for what it does well.
Those speed differences are small, I don't think you will notice. Also the faster processor will probably still load Web pages faster even with the slightly lower network speeds.

You have to understand something, network speeds tests are not exactly reliable measures. If you want comparable measurements, you have to run multiple tests on the 2 phones using the identical server at the same time. Then you average the tests. Otherwise, what you have is one data point, testing from a server at different times. So one point may have been when server was less loaded, or the network was less loaded. And even then, your original tests were close enough that you would not notice it, and to be "underwhelmed" just because of that is silly.
Root has absolutely nothing to do with data speeds. What accounted for the improvement is most likely a decreased load on the server or Sprint's network. I have seen much more variation than that on my own phone, simply by testing at different times of the day.
worrying about a 500 k difference on what appears to be pretty great 3g(remember, some sprint users get literally 100kbps) seems kinda bourgeois. how much faster do you need your porn to download?

Confirmed working well in UK. Normally can't get good signal in house, 1 bar at most, now getting 3 or 4 bars, also data was always on G but now its majority on H. Battery life seems better also after testing it upto to now, thank you
