[Q] SD Card Backup - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm using a 32gb sandisk SD card and would hate to accidentally drop the phone in water or whatever and lose all of its contents. Is there any trick to backing up the sd card that I'm not thinking about? I was just going to copy and paste everything over to an external hard drive every week. Should that do it?

There's several apps that'll back up your information to the net automatically. I'm not sure what info you're concerned about, but Appbrain and MyBackup pro will backup all your apps (and mybackup pro will do other data) to the cloud. If you're looking to backup stuff on your 32 gig card though...I'd consider using Dropbox. As in...keeping all your stuff in a dropbox account and then DLing it to the phone when you want it.

I was less worried about apps and more about nandroid backups, custom wallpapers, music, etc. Since I have mozy backup service I'll just continue to copy over my sd card onto my ext hard drive that's getting backed up on Mozy.

I use RSYNC, to copy my entire SD card to my Linux system,
Dynamic DNS to assing a host name for the phone on the Internet
I just start RSYNC on the phone, start the copy on my linux box, and go shopping or something.

[Q] Removing old clockworkmod backup files

So I have created 2 nandroid backups, and a titanium backup, and now my SD card has no more room on it. I used SwifTP to copy the backups onto my computer. Just to be sure, so I dont F anything up: Is it ok to delete the OLD nandroid backup file? If so, can I do this just by selecting it in Astro, and hitting delete?
Yes, you can delete from Astro if you are 100% certain you are in the right file path, and have the correct file.
You can also delete it from within ROM Manager in the manage/restore backups section - long press what you want to delete, follow prompts.
Unrelated but useful:
A good practice is to every so often copy your SD card contents to your PC so you'll have them, just in case. Maybe every other week or something like that. Why? SD cards do & will fail, and when yours does, you'll have a semi-recent backup of the card.
A full or nearly full SD may make it wonky when you flash a ROM, so maybe consider taking some things off the SD if you can, so the flashing has room to stretch out.
The path is /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/2011-01-....yada yada date and time of backup
Thanks for the advice about the full card, I didnt know that.
What I usually do since I still have the OEM card is just leave one backup in there and save the rest to my PC. I then delete them off the SD card to save room. If I ever need to go back to other backups, I can just pull it off my PC without having them all cluttering up my SD card.
You can use rom manager to delete your unneeded backups also

That's pretty much what I do. Then I looked in my Nandroid folder on my computer... it was 30+ GB! Figured I really only need the last few or so. Im always going through and cleaning out my SD card. Between all the roms and apps, lots of junk can be collected.

Wow, only 9.25gb here!
+1 for using Rom Manager

This is the safest method, prevents you from accidentally deleting files from wrong directory. Plus, try to name your backups (NO SPACES!), it makes it all easier.
P.S: My Nandroid folder on my PC is 15GB, on my SD is 600MB (OEM 2GB Card)

Noob SD Card Question

Just received my phone via FedEx from Wirefly.
I'm going to keep my 32gb sd card currently in my EVO and use it in my new ET4G. I assume when installing the card in the new phone, it will ask me to format it. That being the case, should I first copy over relevant folders/files onto my PC, format the card in the new phone, and then copy over those folders/files back onto the sd card?
Also, other than media files such as music and photos, what else can I continue to use on the new phone? I don't want to mess anything up. Specifically, can I use the LauncherProPlus backup and instantly recreate the homescreen setup on my old phone? Also, can I keep the titanium backup folder and hold onto it until root is achieved?
And a little off topic but anyone else get their phone this late in the day from Wirefly? I called the number to activate the phone (it's an upgrade and not a new line) and the lady stated that I had to wait until Monday to activate it because their activation group is gone for the day. Wtf!?
It won't ask to format.

I activated mine on the sprint website just entered the DEX number and restarted the phone activated on its own from there.
Formatting only affects the file system, so any FAT32 formatted card will be recognized in any Android phone without having to reformat. Just pop it in and you're good to go.
-NO, you will not be asked to format your sd card, so NO, u do not have to move files to/from computer
-YES, you can keep the backup of launcherpro on there, it will replace all your homescreens (except widgets, widgets do not get restored)
-YES, you can keep your titanium backup files on the sdcard, BUT i recommend you install es file explorer, and cut n paste the titanium backup folder from ur sd card to the phones internal memory... (install titanium backup first (it will not work), and a new folder will be automatically created in internal memory labeled titanium backup), just merge the two folders, 1 from sd card, 1 just created in internal memory

[Q] Starting Over From CM7

Hello all. Thanks in advance for any help. I attempted some searches before posting this but didn't come up with much.
I've been using CM7 for quite some time and I quite like it. However, I've started to get some random resets, force closes, and a few other issues. I also feel like I have a lot of unused garbage saved on my memory card and that the phone is generally bogged down and slower than it used to be. Long story short, I'd like to start from scratch, including formatting my 32GB SD card.
As I said, I'm currently on CM7. I'm looking to essentially do a total factory reset and format my SD card. I may go back to Sense until a stable ICS ROM is ready. But I may also go back to CM7. Regardless, my main concern is all these apps I have that were moved to my SD card.
How do I go about saving all of my data while still starting clean? I was thinking I'd back up all app data with MyBackup Pro and save that file on my computer, and then format the SD card. After wiping, flashing a ROM, etc., I'd download MyBackup Pro and upload the data backup back to my phone. Should I also save the .apk files and use them to restore the apps? Would there be any functional advantage in redownloading all the apps individually to ensure a totally clean start? I'm thinking about going the "redownload" route just to force myself to only reinstall the apps I really want/use. If I do that, would restoring data through a batch restore in MyBackup Pro for apps that are no longer installed create any kind of conflict?
If I do save the .apks, when I restore those won't it fill up my internal memory quickly because those apps are not being moved to the SD card automatically? Maybe that's another advantage of downloading each app individually. It would allow me to manually move each app to the SD card so as to keep the used internal memory to a minimum.
I know that was long-winded. Thanks in advance for any advice.
Josh
Get Titanium Backup, backup all your apps to the sd card. They should all be in the Titanium folder on the card, so if you want to format the card too, be sure to copy that to a computer first.

After formatting copy the titanium backup folder back to your SD card, pop back in phone, reinstall TB,restore apps.

And in order to wipe the phone, format/wipe everything you can in your recovery before you reflash CM7 and your Kernel. Make sure you don't wipe the titanium backup on your SD card on accident.
Thanks guys.
So Will Ti Backup put all the apps back to the SD card? I tried this once before with MyBackup Pro and my internal memory filled up because it failed to move to the SD Card automatically.

Depends, if you have dta2sd flashed before restoring then yes, if not you restore apps then move them to sdcard.
Here's the dta2sd thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715938
Flash rom, then gapps if applicable, then kernel if applicable, then dta2sd, Reboot ,download TB, restore apps.

Yes, if you set it to do so. In preferences (under restoration settings) there's the option "restore backups to...". You can choose all internal, all external, default (some apps automatically install to SD, most don't), or you can restore each backup to wherever it was when you backed it up.
Having all of your apps (or even a lot of them) stored on the SD card could be causing your lag. Internal memory always beats an SD card when it comes to read/write speeds. There's no need to have 200 mb free on internal storage, it's just wasted space. I don't know how much you actually have free, that was just an example. Definitely keep your important apps and apps that are heavy on resources on internal, it'll keep some of the lag at bay.
After a full wipe, I always only restore the absolutely necessary apps, even though I restore them from TB. If I ever need an app that I didn't initially restore then I'll restore it. It's like having a brand new phone when you do it that way.
If you decide to use TB, you'll need to move the TB preferences file back to your SD card after formatting... or you can just set it up again. The preferences file is on your SD in data/com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup. Copy the entire folder back to your SD if you don't want to set it up again.
Though it's been covered, I'll do a quick run down.
Do a nandroid backup + any other backup you want.
Copy the contents of your SD card to your computer.
Format your SD card.
Move the files that you need back to your SD card. Rom, kernel, TB folder & preferences folder, nandroid, whatever you want
Assuming you're using Amon Ra, wipe boot, system, data, .android_secure, SD-ext, cache, and dalvik. Since you're starting fresh, I'd wipe them one or two more times.
Flash rom and whatever other files you need.
Restore what you want to restore.
To help with lag, try increasing your VM heap size. You can do so with VM Heap Tool or Rom Toolbox. It'll help more than you'd think.
You can also try the V6 Supercharger script.
Good luck!

Yeah. I know I have way too much stuff on my phone. I have a ton of apps, mainly games. Damn you Amazon free app of the day! I usually roll with about 100MB or so of free internal memory.
So that being said, would you move the Dalvik-Cache to the SD? I have a 32GB Sandisk Class 4 SD card.
And it really seems you guys steer clear of MyBackUp Pro, huh? I've found it much easier to use than Ti Bu.
Thanks again for the advice.

[Q] Titanium Backup.zip question

When I save a Titanium Backup.zip, is that backing everything including the programs and data NOT on the SD card? In otherwords, if I want to make a back up of just the sd card contents if I want to change/upgrade my card, do I just copy the entire sd card to my PC and after formatting the new card just copy everything back? If I use the Titanium Backup.zip won't that wipe over everything and not just the sd card right?

Are you talking about creating an 'update.zip' from Titanium Backup? Assuming this is what you're referring to, though I've never done it, I think all it does is enables you to install TB from CWM directly. I wish most ROMs would just include TB, but since not everyone uses it I understand why they don't.
I don't think this makes a backup of anything really, but I could be wrong. If you want to back everything up, that's where you can nandroid. If you want to backup everything on your SD card, then the steps you stated about copying to a PC are probably your best bet.
Just backup your sd card on a PC, format the new card in the phone (for best compatibility). Then restore everything back onto it from the PC.

Yeah, it starts out as an "Update.zip" but I choose the "Titanium Backup.zip" option. Huh! I did't know that it was only making a backup of Titanium Backup.

I'm not 100% on that, but based on what I read in that option, that's what it sounds like to me. The purpose would be a way for you to restore all your apps if you're lacking a data connection when you flash something new or wipe anything. Chances are slim, but I reckon they're there. If you don't have a data connection, there is no way to download TB and use it to restore anything else...
EDIT: I guess one way to find out would be to make that zip and see how big the file is. If it's only a few megs, then it's just TB. If it's more than that, like over 80ish, then you know it's quite a bit more than just the one app.

Can I restore data after flashing android 11

My device was on android 10 then I flashed android 11 using Odin3.
I have lost all data and photos.
Is there any way I can restore the data?
Thank you
Any help experts
up
Maybe. Always backup critical data redundantly at least 2 times on separate hdds that are physically and electronically isolated.

Why don't you use Google Backup and Google Photos? Easiest way to backup your stuff.
For data (but not photo) backups you can also use adb.

If the victim device was backed up with Google or Samsung cloud this is an option... if it works.
Easiest and the best way is to back it up yourself.
Google backup is a battery and bandwidth hog.
With large data files in the hundreds of GBs it's a sick joke.
Cloud stuff can get hacked and otherwise lost.
Properly stored enterprise class hhds are very reliable and very well isolated.
If you have an SD card slot use that as a data drive. Only the OS, apps, downloads (temporarily) and DCIM (temporarily) go on internal memory.
Set up right you can do a factory reset with zero data loss in about 2 hours.
Nonetheless you always keep the SD card fully backed up!
A .5tb V30 Lexar card is only $64 now... and they run great.

I used to make regular backups to ext SD when I had a phone that had an ext SD slot. Since 2018 (P2XL) I've been on the Pixel line though.
When I was on HTC devices and Samsung before that though, I'd be fearless flashing stuff. I'd always have my TWRP backup on SD to restore if things went sideways.
