so I pretty much decided I'm getting the HTC Desire over the Nexus one, but now with the Desire HD's release about 1 month away I'm debating whether or not to wait.
To be honest I'm in love with the HD's huge screen and looks, but looks alone don't cut it for me. I plan to jump on board the modding/rooting community as soon as I can (just starting out atm) and the Desire is the better choice when it comes to that since its been rooted and messed around with already.
I just worry that I will have to wait a very long time for the Desire HD to be rooted successfully, or it will turnout to be hard to hack and play with like the Nexus one and Desire as I want to try my hand at some hacking myself.
what do you think I should do?
Thanks in advance
EDIT: ok thanks everyone for the replies, I've pretty much decided to go with the Desire. I need a phone I can play around with right away so the Desire would be the better choice. Maybe in the near future when I need a new phone android phones will be more out of the box hacker friendly (hints @ HTC)
If I were you I'd take the HD, but after hTC's stunt with the T-Mobile G2, I'm not so sure at all. If you really want to customise your phone properly, then your best bet would be the Desire.
I'm after the HD now, as i'm a phone whore. So if you want a Desire £230 if you fancy it, unbranded, used but never damaged. Screen mint, phone mint. PM if your interested.

what stunt? and i am leaning more towards the desire at the moment because its more customizable. i'll look around the Desire HD forum for more info, maybe that will help me decide.

Desire!
definetly a Desire. A guy at work got one today and i was well jelous until i saw it in the flesh.
The screen is bigger but the resolution isnt much higher than the desire resulting in a big average screen.
Obviously the cloud features are a benifit but no doublt a custom rom will turn up with them on sooner or later.
Aye. supposedly we're going to get the HD sense package for our desires in December too! w00t.

I think you should go for Desire. Spending more money just for HD features when your use is mainly for modding - ahhh... doesnt make sense to me

Hey, what do you mean by Free of Market Restrictions? (sorry for going offtopic)
I have a Desire and wanted a Desire HD. Until I noticed, it's not the hardware I want. It's the software.
I think the design of the Desire is better.
I also like the physical buttons more. (My mom got a Wildfire, I had using it cause I always accidently hit the capatative buttons).
I think the size is perfect. Sometimes I feel like I wouldn't mind if the Desire was bigger. At other times when using with 1 hand, I find it a bit big.
It's the nw HTC Sense that I noticed I REALLY want. And I'm gonna get that anyway. Officially or modded.

oh yeah, i heard that this feature was on the motorola Droid, had no idea HTC did that same thing to the G2. While the phone will most likely be sold here unbranded and unlocked, since I got Legend which was exclusively sold by vodaphone unbranded and unlocked, i think it will most likely be a built-in hardware feature regardless of whether or not its exclusive to a certain carrier. that seems to be the on going trend right now with HTC and other manufacturers.
___
at the moment the Desire seems to be the better choice for me, i was considering the HD version based purely on physical looks. after seeing the HD2 in person i loved the huge screen and i thought the Desire HD will be like a buffed up android version of the HD2. i know the Desire will eventually get the updated Sense UI so i have no worries regarding the software.
As for the camera, 5MP is good enough for me when i want to take pictures on the go, otherwise i bring along a real camera with me. I don't think phone cameras are good enough to replace an actual camera just yet.

I want to jump on the band wagon here cos im in the same boat, and this thread has thrown a spanner in the works!!
Ive currently got a rooted hero but lack the power from a 1ghz amongst other things....ive played in length with the Desire and genuinely love it, but its knocking on a bit now so am tempted to hold out for the Desire HD as the price is only £100 diff.
What are we saying about the new HD ? Is it likely to going to be a ball ache to do what the desire already does well.....dont get me wrong ill wait for the dev work to catch up but obviously if theres **** hard coded designed to prevent rooting is it gonna be worth it?
also im going unbranded this time....if that makes a difference (aside from the obvious lack of network restrictions!)
I'd suggest wait till the community has successfully rooted the HD, then decide
aww I was gonna go buy the Desire tomorrow, now I can't decide again haha
I can call HTC's distributor here and ask them when exactly the device will release here and how much it will be for. When i was comparing between the Nexus and Desire the price was almost the same but now there is obviously going to be a significant price difference.
I guess for me now it all comes down to the price and customization ability.
I've checked the Desire HD's forums and there seems to be a temporary root solution for it at the moment. Looks like they are still working on it.

Hello everyone!
My father needs a new phone and it looks like the Desire Z is the best option for buying for him.
I'm happy now with my HTC HD2, but I found out that a hell of a lot of tweaking/adjusting register/ROM-updating/enz. had to be done before it was great. When the HD2 came out the phone was great but the software sucked big time. Now I want to know, how about the Desire Z? Are there any bugs or major drawbacks? Anything really not working on these phones?
I'm thinking of trouble like I had with my HD2 which had a 3G/HSDPA-connection that hung up on me every now and than. Audiobooster which you had to turn on (again) after each song, Twitter-tab that never really worked until the last ROM-update and so on...
Let me know what sucks about the Desire Z (or why it's really great)
Thnx!

For me the only minus with DZ are the loose hinge issue, the lack of a front facing camera, the fact that the hardware keyboard does not have all the usual qwerty keyboard characters and that the hardware keyboard does not tilt.
These side, the DZ is great.
To buy or not to buy? The decision will be yours, bearing in mind that there might shortly be better configured devices coming from htc in not too distant a future.
No comparison whatsoever between Windows Mobile and the Android experience on the Desire Z. Having come from the Touch Pro 2, I was used to heavy tweaking & frequent ROM flashing just to make the phone tolerable. The DZ is light years ahead of any Windows Mobile phone. Its fast, smooth, stable, and just a joy to use out of the box. The only real modification I've done is remove the Bell Canada bloatware.

do you need the physical keyboard? if not flash a nice android ROM on the HD2 and go to town. I left my TP2 and HD2 because winmo 6 had come as far as it could, and android leaped ahead of it. I love my G2, but I wish I still had my Hd2 to enjoy with android, I don't use the keyboard, so the hinge isn't a factor, the 4g service is still in its infancy and spotty at best, and i live in a major city. Save you money or your tmobile upgrade credit, and wait for something significantly better and that ain't the nexus S

i have whats considered a newer desire z (i guess) and the hinge has not been a problem whatsoever. Its by far the best phone i have ever owned (Nexus one, desire, moto milestone). You will enjoy the accuracy of a real hardware keyboard as well.

+1. I had a TP2 as well, and the stock ROM sucked.
I am still running the stock ROM (1.34) on my Desire Z, and I love it. I'm sure the custom ROMs are great/even better, but the stock ROM on the DZ is so much better as an experience compared to my old WinMo phone.

You could always be waiting for the next thing... there will ALWAYS be something better if you wait just a little longer. At some point, you have to actually buy the thing.
And the other thing is that the wait could be longer than you expect. It took TWO WHOLE YEARS for them to produce a phone that was a worthwhile upgrade over DREAM. A whole lot of phones have had some really compelling benefits, but considering the whole package, nothing else has yet been able to measure up.... so go ahead and wait until October 2012.

That's what I used to say too. But someone else here pointed out a press release from the ITU, who have *changed* their definition of 4G to now include this sort of HSPA+.

hinge is somewhat loose, but you can buy replacement springs for like 5$. also i suggest you get a newer phone as both desire and desire z are almost 1 year old
If I will buy mobile i should buy new springs ? or i should buy springs later when springs from mobile will loose ?

well you should try out the hinge. if you feel its too lose for you then you should buy the springs but if it does the job then you dont need to buy them right away. its your preference
if you happen to get the DZ, you can pretty much get the phone, open itup, replace the spring and not have to worry about it ever agian. I have 25lb spring rate springs in there and it hasn't weakend one bit.
The Z is great. Even if its becoming old, its still very fast, and has a great community. It can be overclocked to 1.9GHZ, and will probably get future updates as the devs are great ;D

Buddy, you cannot compare these 2.
You could compare and think about a Desire Z or a Desire S.
These 2 are close, the Desire is one (or 2) generations back.
- The Desire S is newer, everything is probably more, CPU, memory etc.
- The DZ yes, has the keyboard. Don't worry about the hinge. I have a DZ, I could live without a hardware qwerty but it is very nice and easy to type on Android phones even without one.
- The Desire S has a front camera, the DZ doesn't.
(I miss the front camera, but I don't use it as much as a qwerty keyboard. If I am typing anything longer than an sms, I just POP flip it open and there I go)
There's only a little problem about the hardware keyboard, that is special characters, like áéöü etc. You have to long press and then choose the right one on the screen and the hardware keyboard doesn't support word suggestion, except for English. If you type vertically on the screen, you can choose the language.
Like I said I have A Desire Z. I would NOT change to anything other than a Desire S or a Sensation. Other phones for the same price and with similar features are bigger, wider (Desire HD for example) for ME.
Hope I could help.

WinMo6.1, 6.5 etc.
This phone is the first one I use with its stock HTC firmware.
Yes, there are some unnecessary apps on it that you would but cannot remove, but they don't slow the performance so much.
In MY opinion.

But Desire S=more expensive
Expensive
Desire S in my country is much more expensive
And the price is very important for me.
I am not very rich but I am happy and I love my family
No wallpaper
No wallpaper but icons and ..lockscreen ..
Should i buy the Desire? It's pretty cheap, i haven't got much money, and i need a decent phone? I currently have a LG Optimus One, but i need something a bit more exquisite. Will i notice any performance difference? Oh and i was thinking of a Nexus One as well, but i've been comparing these two and the Desire seems to win!
It may be 2 years old but it has a great fanbase with a great selection of custom roms. I am due for renewal in April but I seriously cannot see anything that justifies me to commiting myself to another 18 month contract just yet, that's how good this phone is. It really is holding its own even now and I would without hesitation say go for it. If you get one second hand then just check the hardware buttons to make sure they work (my volume down button is starting to need a hard press to work) and if you get an unrooted one then you have got all the rooting stuff to enjoy as well I would get this over the Nexus One, in fact I spent a week putting phone against phone and eliminating them one by one when I first got my Desire. A cracking phone even now.

Hi guys. This post is only to talk about our expectation to see an HTC One with keyboard.
I looked for a phone with keyboard that has a good hardware specifications but seems there is no phone. Sincerely, I would like to see an HTC One X with keyboard and with all the 4 cores
It's a shame that manufacturers forget the phones with keyboards.
HTC said that One is their new models. I want to believe it like Desire series and there will be an HTC One with keyboard with great hardware specs. What do you think?
I would really love that. I wasn't surprised when HTC didn't announce a hardware keyboard device in the One series, but I was still a little bit disappointed. I think that companies should be focusing on hardware keyboards alot more than they are. Really, the last awesome device with a hardware keyboard was the Desire Z/G2. The only other decent phones besides the Desire Z/G2 with hardware keyboards are Droids, in my opinion. It would be great if HTC released a keyboard as part of the One series AND as a "G3." Like they did with our device, as a part of the Desire series and a successor to the G1.
I'm waiting for this fall, really hoping they release a G3 or w/e. If it will happen we'll hear about it during the summer.

yup, it should be when they will... that is... IF they do at all. It seems like qwertys are extinct now. HTC has been changing their direction a bit lately and I wouldn't be surprised if they don't make one this year. I hope I'm wrong...
I really like the keyboard on the Mytouch 4G Slide I bought for my girlfriend. But it's a big phone, so she has a hard time using the keyboard.
Supposedly the One X will be coming to tmo with the Tegra 3 and all 4+1 glorious cores continuing the G series as the G3X. I really REALLY want a phone with a keyboard, but for the specs of the One X, I'll just bluetooth a wiimote in for all my emulator needs.

Its possible (unconfirmed) whether that name will grace the tmobile usa brand name version of the htc one x or the lg optimus 4x. they do also say the one x tmousa version (whatever the name is) will ship with android 4.0 and NOT Sense 4.0.... weird huh? I like Sense but rather have pure stock and add Sense later myself if I felt like it.
I think it's safe to assume that qwerty phones aren't big sellers, or they'd be making loads of them. I would love a One X too though, here's hoping !

yeah, in the end... it's all about money I really think if marketed correctly they could be just as big as they were back in the beginning of the smartphone era. oh well... HTC might pull one out this year, I hope.
Yet another vote for a high spec HTC with qwerty. I cannot do without the keyboard. I bought a dhd to see if I could break the habit but it didn't work. I've even tried a wireless keyboard to go with the dhd. After a couple of frustrating weeks I through the dhd in a draw and dusted off my trusted dz.
I spend a couple of hours per day on the train answering work email and at least another hour of email at home in the evening. Often I am editing word/excel docs in QuickOffice as I respond to those emails. Trying to do this without a keyboard just isn't feasible. Surly there must be many users like me who would happily pay up to £500 for a decent qwerty HTC?!

Same here.
Also I pay a lot of nintendo emulator, try playing a fast action game with a touch screen that was meant to be played with a screen only.

It would be fantastic if they made something like the HTC One X Pro..... give us a 5 row keyboard.. that would be super awesome
I must say I love a keyboard on my Touch pro 2. Also I must say that an onscreen keyboard on a Titan is pretty good too, only problem is that it takes visual space. It's hard to imagine a Titan with a keyboard though. Also what would that do to the weight and size of such a huge phone. Can't imagine if I could even treat it as a phone anymore.
I would love a One X with a hardware keyboard..... but realistically I don't think it's going to happen
If there were a case available with a keyboard like the TP2 had, or even my G2, I would definitely go for that..... I don't care if it's a bit fat, as long as it feels solid.
