Problem setting own message tone - Desire General

Since I upgraded to 2.2 I haven't been able to set my own message tone. I have the mp3 that I want to use sat on my sd card, but it won't allow me to copy and paste to the notifications file on my phone, and says "insufficient file permissions"
I have tried via HTCSync, tried two different file managers but still nothing. Can anyone shed any light??? I would also like to change the boot up noise but can't do that either.
Generic Stock 2.2 (Orange debranded) if that helps.
Thanks

Searching helps. Put ringtones and notification sounds in their respective directories in the media directory on your SD card. Search marked for silent boot.

Thanks for that, but I want to change the boot noise, not make it silent. I want to use the Xbox start up noise lol.

[Q] add mp3 ringtones

Ih everybody!
I've some problems to add new ringtone to my desire..
I flashed the new oxigen 2.0 rom (gigerbread) and there isn't a lot of choice for ringtones, alarms, ... so I would add some mp3 but..
I tried whit several apps (ringdroid, ringtone editor, ...) and I can't find my mp3 on the sdcard (i tried to put it in /sdcard , in /sdcard/media/audio/ringtones, in /sdcard/music(/audio)/ringtones, in /sdcard/ringtones and some others way). I also tried whit .ogg files but nothing.
I ask to google and find some tips, but they didn't work neither..
someone know how can I do it?
thanks
cya
No need of an app to do that : if you copy your audio files in /sdcard/media/audio/(alarms, notifications or ringtones), they will normally be usable the same way as the ones in /system/media/audio/(alarms, notifications or ringtones)
It works for me on Desire under Oxygen 2.0 RC7.
I also tried this way, but it did not work..

From the native music player you can set it as ringtone.

I tried that way as soon as I saw your post, but it did not work neither..
Actually I find out that I can't add music on the music player.. I don't know why.. I also tried to set as ringtone mp3 and ogg files from astro file manager, I can see the menu option, but I can't select the option!
I think about it and maybe I did a mess when I restore my backup whit mybackup pro (I restore also home config and settings who comes from another rom).. now I'm trying to reflash the rom and I will see...
erase sd card?
Nope.. I reflashed oxygen, and now I'm trying redux, and I still have this problem..
obviously the problem come from my desire, probably form my sdcard, but I don't know what I can do to fix that things..
I also noticed last night that I've a similar problem with the image gallery, the app can't find any image on my sd card, but I've a lot of it..
If I erase my sd card (backing up data apps) can I just put it back in the phone or there is things to do?

[Q] A ringtone I haven't selected rings my phone in CM7

I am using one of the CM7 nightlies, nightly 132 i think. At some point i noticed that a custom ringtone I had created was ringing the phone instead of the CM7 default ringtone. I changed the ringtone to one of the other standard CM7 ringtones. The next time my phone rang it was still a custom ringtone. I went into file manager and changed file suffix so that the file would no longer be seen and hoping the phone would then default to the ringtone I had chosen. Instead the phone only vibrates now. Any way I can force the phone to see the default ringtones.
Like I said before, I'm using CM7 nightly, I think 132 with Tiamet 4.0.x kernel.
i have had the same exact problem since i flashed CM7.1.0 RC1, tried the same thing (deleting the song) and now the phone only vibrates, as well. Just wanted to state your not the only one. Would really like a solution for this, i've tried using the winamp 'set as ringtone' setting without luck, as well....

I didn't solve the root cause of this issue, but to get the ringtone i wanted I copied the ringtone file from the 'ringtones' folder to the 'music' or 'audio' folder where the ringtone i didn't want to ring the phone was stored. I'd already changed the suffix of the custom ringtone so that it can't inadvertently be selected by the phone.
It works, but i still don't know why the phone isn't looking in the correct folder for the ringtones.

[Q] Temp root or other way to move file to internal memory on gingerbread?

Hi All,
I'm trying to move few ringtones from my card to internal memory. It is driving me crazy as it randomly loses custom ringtones from the mem card and phone doesn't ring or rings with default sounds. I'm trying to figure out the cause of this for last 2 weeks, and it just happens, almost all the times I charge battery (no meter what connection mode is or if I charge it in wall charger or on PC).
So, I decided to by pass the problem by moving notification files on the internal memory, where they will not be lost from the list, as device will always "see" them.
I got european desire Z updated to 2.3.3 stock room, and I know it is not possible to root it yet.
I heard of temp root, will that allow me just to move files on internal memory?
Thanks!
Use ringdroid. Its free, it has a wave editor, and places tonez in system.

Thanks for the answer, but actually it doesn't. It just sets the file on the SD card as you would do it manually.
I will keep trying with various combination of location of notification files, currently they are at "sdcard/media/audio/notificaitons" and ringtones and I will check how they perform so far.
i would say use adb. just copy the files to your computer and then push the files to the correct folder of the internal storage. there are plenty of threads on how to get adb working and once its working its pretty simple to move files.
Thanks,
I will try to go in that direction, but so far when I try to run ADB as root I get:
"adbd cannot run as root in production builds"
and if I try to push file on device "adb push InComgMsg.mp3 /data" I get
failed to copy 'InComgMsg.mp3' to '/data/InComgMsg.mp3': Permission denied
or with "adb push InComgMsg.mp3 system/media/audio/notifications" I get
failed to copy 'InComgMsg.mp3' to 'system/media/audio/notifications/InComgMsg.mp3': Read-only file system
I guess I need root in order to do this? I will keep searching, but if this cannot be done for non-rooted device please stop me before I waste any more time
I have the EXACT same problem - I am looking for a way to copy mp3s (to use as ringtones) as the phone is constantly forgetting the custom ones.
I chatted with HTC support and they said it was a known issue that probably would be resolved in a patch in the future.. bah "in the future" riiight.
There is probably no solution, at least I haven't found any. I might even be tempted to downgrade, and to gain root and upgrade just for the sake of having my phone actually ring when connected to the PC (it is connected btw using the Charging Only option but again it will not make any sounds).
So far I'm keeping ringtones in /sdcard/media/audio/ringtones/ and it behaves better, phone(system) recognizes sounds most of the time, but just few hours ago phone was charging on the PC with Charge Only option and I missed important call because it made no sound at all. Once disconnected from the PC it rings as expected.
Man, this is sooooo annoying, the feature of custom ringtones I had on Alcatel phone (even before nokia 5110) worked just fine, and that was about 15 years ago.

[Q] Zedge force closing

Hi all, relative noob here...Had a quick question regarding Zedge. I've been using this app for awhile on my old HTC Hero, and now my E4GT. Just recently, using Calk's ROM 2.7 and now 2.8.1, I've run into an issue when trying to select a Zedge ringtone or notification sound from Settings-->Sounds. When the pop up window comes up (Choose: System Sounds, Zedge) and I select Zedge, the phone freezes for a second then shows the "Zedge process force close window" and I'm stuck with system tones. Same thing will happen if I try to assign a tone from within Zedge. Some times Zedge will work, sometimes not. I've run fix permissions, but I'm still running into the issue. I've also tried using Super Manager to move my Zedge files to the system media folder, but that does nothing either. I have a couple of programs on my phone that help me control programs that are auto-starting (specifically, Android Assistant & Rom Toolbox Lite), but I don't know if those are playing a part in this problem.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Also, if it helps, I'm currently on Calk's 2.8.1 ROM with the EL13 modem and the Rogue Desperado Kernal.
Not sure why you're coming across these problems but i've found it's easier to just make a "ringtones" & "notifications" folder on my sdcard. After creating them, all sounds placed in will be available in the corresponding settings menu.

Should these folders be placed in a specific location on the sd card (media folder, for instance) or simply in the root of the sd card? Thanks in advance.

CM7 Unchangeable Ringtone

The problem I am having is the phone shows the ringtone I want and my ringtone manager app shows the correct ringtone but when the phone goes off it plays some off the wall tone that I cant seem to find and delete from the phone. ANY suggestions are welcomed.
message tone plays just fine
All stock ringtones for CM7 is located at /system/media/audio/ringtones/. Delete the ringtones you don't want. S-Off required. Or remove them from the zip before flashing.
If it doesn't play the tones you assign, make sure there are no conflicting apps working for your notification tones.
Ok so i have deleted all the files in that area and still have the problem.
I have "contact remover" app witch allows me to control my contacts on my phone and those backed up to google. Not sure if this matters or not but when adding new contacts the app automatically gives me the option to create the contact on the phone without sync or to my google account. I don't know if because I choose the backup option to google if there is something overriding cm7, i get that damn annoying ringtone and my vibrate settings are not recognized either.
Should I just erase and start over with a different mod???????? Not what I really want to do, as i am really happy with cm7 but I am seriously at my wits end with this annoying ringtone.

Actually, there is another way to do this despite S-ON.
With ADB installed, execute "adb remount". Somehow this changes the state of the system and puts it read-write mode. After executing "su", I was able to navigate down to the ringtones and notifications folders and remove all the files I didn't care to use. Worked like a charm on my HTC Hero CDMA.
