Some good old noob questions - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was looking to flash to Bakedsnack 1.8 with ROM manager, has anyone done this successfully? Or would you recommend doing it a different way. I ran the backup current ROM for the standard one that came with phone just rooted... but does that save EVERYTHING??

Yes, a nand backup saves EVERYTHING. Think of it like having a clone of your hard drive on your computer. If something goes wrong with your new ROM you restore a nand backup and everything is there.
Backing up through ROM Manager is fine. Make sure you do a complete data wipe and cache clear before flashing your new ROM of choice. If you don't do the data wipe and cache clearing you will likely end up going into a boot loop after flashing the new ROM. If that happens it isn't a big deal. You'll simply have to reflash the ROM, this time remembering to do the data wipe and cache clear.

[Q] A few questions about flashing ROMs

Hey All,
I am curious about a few things...
I had a couple/few nandroid back ups that were stored on my phone, do you all only keep 1 nandroid and delete your previous backups?
I am running mikfroyo and flashed another ROM about 2 days ago, had some issues so I went back to mik. I think I may have done it in a way that nobody else does...I did it like I was flashing it for the first time, wipe everything and flash from sd card.
Should I have just did a nandroid restore? What does this actually bring back? Text, recent calls, apps?
When doing a nandroid restore should I wipe all before doing so? I would imagine the answer is yes.
And one more, before switching to any new ROM, should I always flash Caulkins Format All zip?
Thank you.
Nand restore will restore everything that was on your phone when you made the backup. Definitely a good idea to flash the zip when installing a new ROM. I also do it to restore though.
When you restore, unless you are backing up the cache, which isn't necessary, you need to minimally wipe the cache/dalvik before you restore. Also, if your SD Card is partitioned, you would need to wipe SD EXT. I pretty much flash Calk's format all anytime I restore or flash a new ROM.
I almost never have one back up. I have a few ROMs I like so, I set them up the way I want and restore between them when I get bored, which is like 100 times a day it feels like.
I do usually only keep the latest backup of any one ROM though. At any given time I probably have at least 5.
Edit: I re-read your post and I think I misunderstood one part the first time. Sometimes, when I got back to a previous ROM, I do just reflash it and start over, but I am anal about fresh starts. Usually I do just nand restore, especially if I know the setup was running well. I don't typically restore a lot between ROMs b/c I feel like it just adds to something that can go wrong. A lot of times I redownload apps instead of restoring, especially if they are purchased, since they are just stored in my apps in the market anyway. And I never restore app data. Usually end up only restoring about 30 apps w/out data, but most people do backup/restore a lot of info with no problems.
You should have just restore from a previous backup. When you restore, it bring ti back to EXACTLY how it was, texts, number of calls, ect. Actually you don't need to wipe when doing a restore. Well you can manually wipe all of them, or flash the format all, so I'm saying yes.
Also, I suggest against wiping data before creating a nandroid backup, lol. That would defeat the purpose, as your info and apps will be gone! Just wipe cache and davlik before a backup, or nothing at all, just so there's no confusion.

Yeah, I didn't mean to wipe anything before backing up. But if your going to restore a different ROM and there's no cache included in the nand back up you're going to restore, then best to wipe it before you restore.

It is partitioned, what gets stored on there that needs to be wiped, apps?

If the ROM has a2sd built in, yeah, if not, nothing. I always wipe it just so I'm in the habit of doing it for when it's there. Also depending on how a2sd is set up, dalvik can be on there.

[Q] Tips for re-flashing Installed ROM?

I've got a general question that I haven't really found an answer for - although I know the information is there, I'm just not 100% sure how to piece it together. I'm hoping all you experts out there can help provide some guidance.
Using my EVO as an example, I currently have Fresh 3.5.0.1 flashed and have been very happy with it. But, I've been dinkin' around with Titanium Backup and uninstalled a few things (i.e. LiveWallpaper) and generally (probably) made a mess of things.
Everything is still working fine, I'd just like to get a fresh start with Fresh 3.5.0.1 but I'm not exactly sure what I should do to ensure a totally clean device.
I have ROM Manager installed... is it as simple as creating a NANDROID backup, downloading the ROM again and flashing? Or, should I boot into recovery and clear caches, wipe data/factory reset? I'm not sure if a "wipe data/factory reset" from the CM recovery (3.0.0.5) is the right thing to do.
Guidance would be very helpful and much appreciated. Hopefully, others could use any information provided to do the same with their device if they're unsure how to do the same thing with other ROM's.
i usually like using amon ra recovery instead of clockwork recovery which is the one use by rom manager, if you want to try it rom manager has an option at the bottom that says flash different recovery and says amon ra, if you click it your recovery will become amon ra which i like better for wiping. but to answer your question, yes for a fresh start on a new rom you need to boot into recovery, then NANDROID BACKUP, then wipe 1.cache 2. dalvik cache 3. data and then flash your new rom and you are good to go
If you want to start fresh on the current 'Fresh' ROM then, yes, wipe fully and reflash.

Just do exactly what you did when you flashed it for the first time. Place zip on sd card, nandroid backup, wipe everything, flash rom.

[Q] Frozen Bootscreen - attempted change from LeeDrOiD V3.0.2 GB to RCMix S v1.3

Hi all,
Would really appreciate your help! I'm a nOOb and may have bricked my phone. I rooted and installed a LeeDroid Froyo Rom last year, updated this recently to LeeDrOiD V3.0.2 GB. I got brave today and attempted to change this to RCMix S v1.3 (Sense 2.1+3.0mix) but now my phone is stuck on the HTC Bootscreen.
The process I followed was the same as when installing LeeDroids ROMs:
I backed up my apps
Re-partioned my SD card - 512md using ROM Manager
Used ROM Manager to boot to recovery
Factory re-set
Re-installed ROM Manager
Copied the new ROM zip file to the SD Card
Used ROM Manager to boot to recovery
Installed the new ROM which installed correctly ("Congrats, successful installation, re-boot and enjoy ..." or similar word to that effect)
Re-booted
But now it's frozen on a permanent HTC logo bootscreen.
I would greatly appreciate any help you can offer, or a link to the solution if there is one that may have been requested and solved before, I've spent an age searching the forums but can not find a solution.
Thanks in advance,
Karl
sounds like you didnt wipe the dalvik cache.
I would drop the battery out, replace and boot into recover, wipe data factory reset, wipe dalvik and go for another install.
Can you confirm if you did the above?
edit: oh and i dont know if its made a differance but when i install a new rom, i transfer to the SD card then, wipedata, wipe cache and then install as opposed to booting the phone after wiping data
Before flashing you always have to do a full wipe.
Your systemdata and apps can backed up by Titanium Backup. The backup don't get deleted by the wipe. After flashing the new rom (and eventually re-downloading/re-installing Titanium Backup you can restore all systemdata and apps by "Menu>Batch>Restore missing systemdata and apps".
First tip for the future: Always make a complete nandroid before every flash. If there are problems with your new system, you a running system anyway.
Second: When go from sense-rom to a non-sense-rom (or reversed), you must not restore system data, only the apps. Otherwise there can be heavy problems with your system.

Cheers Vis-tec,
Yeah, it was the dalvik cache, I did exactly what you suggested and it worked perfectly. Never heard of dalvik cache before but wiping it did the job.
Thanks again,
Karl

Thanks MatDroid,
Good tip about the system data when moving between sense and non-sense roms - I would have found that out the hard way for sure!
I know nothing about nandroid so I'll start reading up on it!
Thanks again,
Karl

Another good tip, I assumed that the wipe would delete the back-up, or to be more precise, I was unsure where it backed up the data/apps to. So I uploaded to Dropbox using the Dropbox feature in Titanium Backup ... this takes an age so it's good to know that the backup doesn't get deleted by the wipe for future rom changes!
Thanks again,
Karl
Try using RaRecovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=839621
It's the recommended recovery for RCMix S. I got stuck in splash because of CWM.

[Q] restoring backups

what is the proper way to restore a backup rom? do you wipe anything or just go to recovery and restore
I always wipe but I have read that you do not need to wipe. The back up should over write everything but I always still wipe first to try and get rid of any old data. Maybe its just my ocd
well i was just wondering i always just went to recovery and restored, i got to thinkin maybe i'm doin it wrong, i haven't had any problems doin that way accept a couple bugs with the market not downloading stuff, but easely fixed, just thought i'd ask, thanks for the reply, do you wipe data, cache, or what/
Ya I have been using ext4 and I wipe all except for sd. But like I said I have read that it is not.needed. personally I like a clean start.

[Q] How to upgrade rom without data wipe

But can i update my device without data wipe so i don't have to reinstall and reconfigure the entire device every time. And if I can can someone please tell me how.
My usual procedure is download file, data wipe, clear davlik and cache, flash, wipe cache restart and wonderfull a better device. But all the data and apps go with the wipe so any help would be awesome!
Thnx for all the help!!

If you're not switching to a different ROM (ie, from CM7 to CM9, or from hashcode to energy...) then you can optionally skip the data wipe (factory reset), which will retain your data and applications...
Alternatively, you may want to take a look at Titanium Backup.
Thnx for the info.
I have been hearing a lot about Titanium Backup, can you give more info about the program.
With TB you can back up any apps on your device. Then when you update a rom just download TB again and then you can restore your apps that you backed up. I love TB and use it on every device that I have rooted. It is a lifesaver!! Ok maybe a time saver anyway!! LOL!!!!
I had a REALLY bad experience from not wiping everything completely. I'd definitely do a backup, like Titanium or MyBackupPro, and wipe it all just to be safe. To many goofy things can happen if you don't.
It really depends on what ROM your flashing. There are rare occasions you can cross flash without issue. Not recommended. Just updating the same ROM so wipe is necessary, unless mentioned by the dev.
If you do wipe than BUYING titanium backup is the way to go. The free version doesn't auto install apps, each needs confirmation.
I can get any ROM on the kf or my gnex but up and running in less than 15 minutes.
this is what I have been doing and I am not sure if it's bad to do or not. I make a backup of just my data using twrp, then I wipe the caches and do a factory reset. Then I install the rom, and then restore my data using twrp

Restoring your backed up data is akin to not having done "factory reset" in the first place.
You shouldn't encounter any major issues so long as you're flashing newer versions of the same ROM and there hasn't been a large change (for example, switching to linaro).
