So I bought my wife the new G2 today, I loaded up handcent .. I know on my G1 I could get a notification light to blink. Does the G2 have this ability? I know the light is on while it is charging.
Thanks!
As of right now the only notification is the ring of light around the trackpad. I am hoping the ability to use and customize the speaker grill LED will be released in an OTA update
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
By my understanding, the speaker grille LED isn't RGB. It's only two channel (Amber and something else; lacking blue)
However, the ring of light around the trackpad is. While that may or may not come in a future OTA, it's almost guaranteed when we've got root.
Thanks .. I will update the wifey and let her know that it will be resolved at some point in the future
here you go

Led me know app does this..but you need root

+1 for the LED Me Know app (from the Android market).
The trackpad light is white-only.
The speaker-grille-LED can be green/amber/red. "LED Me Know" currently can make it flash amber or green, and you can make it flash the trackpad or even the keyboard backlight too, for different notification types.
Edit - holy thread resurrection Batman !

So, now that Telus has released the Desire HD, I'm finally seriously thinking about giving up my N1.
Just curious about the notification LED. Obviously it's not going to be as bright or large as the N1, but how is it in general? Noticeable? Good size? Customizable with apps or ROMS (I will be moving to CM7 asap on it)?
Just curious...

Seems like it does. I've also seen videos that briefly show it flashing. But I haven't really seen a video with a good look at it, hence my question...
interesting...i just got the phone yesterday. It does seem to have an LED....doesn't work for me on emails though....that's why i thought it didnt have one!
It works alright, but the view angles are limited because it's behind the grille. If you look at it straight on, it's bright enough.
And you might want to have yours checked if the LED does not work, try *#*#3424#*#* and choose LED test.
Has anyone used light flow for notification led customization? I've tried it and its pretty nice. What's been your experience?

I had this issue also and I wasn't really sure what the problem was. The discription said the S3 is supported.

Im going with a bug
At the moment the leds hex codes sent through to the US versions of the S3 are all messed up. This is common across all apps that try to control the led color and is certainly a bug in the samsung builds for the US editions (it works on the euro ones)
I'm looking into rooted users being able to control the colors better by bypassing android and using unix to send commands to the device. We've got red, green and blue working but not any color mixing yet.
thanks so much andrew! Look forward to using this when you are finished!

how's the the bug where the green stays on when the phone is just sleeping with no new notifications?
hope the fix comes out soon
There's still a bit to do, but getting out the colors, flash speeds etc are working .it's just trying to fight against the standard notifications that I'm working on.
Awesome.. I still have it installed & can't wait to get it back up and running again

So we would need root with an updated version to work?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
If we're rooted already and using the app, what do we need to do to get it to work without the constant green LED? Or are you saying you have a modified version of the app that works with rooted US SGSIII's? Can you post that for testing purposes? I'm good with three color for not as long as the green light does not stay lit!
Im getting close to a having a beta ready.
Root will be required until samdung sort out their issues with the led.

W00T!! Cant wait to try it out, if I end up using it a lot(which i prolly will) I'll be sure to donate / buy the full version
I am hopping the updated version will also have a fix for the issue when it triggers an speach alert whenever you open a folder on the TWlauncher ("A folder is opened", "a folder is closed", whatever the English version says).
Then I will buy the full app.

Thanks for the info, that fixes it but it also turns off Google Maps Navigation talkback ... and the talkback service is turned off, I actually had to mute ALL sound in the accessibility setting.
it is better than before though but waiting for a permanent fix

Led disco works to at least show you what all colors we have
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
I have noticed for different reminders, our galaxy s3 has a lot more colors included in this LED. Was wondering if there is any app I could use to control these specific colors yet? I've tried blink, sms popup, and LED control and the colors you have to pick from are not matching with what colors the phone flashes. Just didn't know if there was anything out there yet for us to control that
I noticed this too. It's funny once I noticed it was purple lol. But it would be cool to find a app or maybe it come in a ROM or something. But I doubt anything is like that now. Just have to stay patient and let the devs know about it and hope we can see it in the near future.

So if I'm not mistaken this app isn't ready yet for the gs3 right? Last time I used it the colors were off. You would choose red and get white or choose green and get red.

Yes, They are having some issues right now. Maybe the next update it will be fixed. Last time it was updated was July 17th.
Hey guys, good news. I found a free app called light manager. Its in the market/play store. It will let you modify the led color and flash rate. And it actually picks up the correct colors too. Check it out, it was just updated today 07/31/2012.

I am running stock. This has all different colors. It also will produce random white/blue LEDs without any notification in the notification bar.
Another option would be to root, and go with the CM10 preview build (it's very stable at this point, good enough for a daily). You can apply LED colors/blink intervals to just about anything with it. No other apps or hacking required. :good:
Doesn't look like Light Manager or Light Flow works yet.
Could be differences between models

I've tried both as well, I'm on a Telus SIII (I747M) and not having any luck with any of the suggested apps, but I have heard of people getting it to work. So at this point, it could be possible its a difference in the devices and control of them. I'm glad someone is looking into this because I used to have a BlackBerry and I loved the ability to customize the LED completely down to what colour light flashes when a certain contact texts or calls. It was so customizable, this is the first Android device I've had that has an LED, so hopefully we will be able to take control of it! :good:
Works on S III
Works great on my Galaxy SIII (rooted, Sprint version) !
I'll vouch for Light Flow, but its a little buggy. my green light stays on when i have signal (even when turned off)
Light flow just got updated today and fixed the green light always on with a lot of other app fixes.
Lightflow is cool. But all assigned colors do not work... Yet....

Looking for the best led control app available. Having the notification led back was one of the biggest wins on this phone for me (having come from a skyrocket 2 days ago). not having a notification led has been bugging me since I came from blackberry. I had an app on my bold that could make calls, texts, and emails different colors, combinations or patterns. Would like this app to make the led flash while ringing too, not just a missed call.

Another option that you got is to flash an CM10 or or PA Hybrid ROM, it has a built-in seetting for Led Control, it works flawlessly.
Cheers!
theres also light manager. I believe the dev built it specifically for the GS3.

Tried that one, and it was derped on US S3. I tested the miss call, and it did show the color, however, the light would not go away afterwards(even after clearing the call, disabling the app, and even uninstalling the app)

Light Flow is def a great app. Provides plenty of customization and if needed the pro version provides LED notifications for many different apps from the Play store.
None of these can have the led on when screen is on or incoming call.

Where did you get the rooted version of LightFlow? Just download the market version and it will ask for root? I don't see any of those details on the blog by the author.... just see where he said he's been messing with the root version, not posting it for download, do you have a link to it somewhere?
Unless you mean the Lite version, where he states this:
....the S3 USA versions have some issues unless your phone is "rooted" (See our website for more details)....

the latest lightflow version is causing wake locks and preventing the phone from going into deep sleep
the LED controls in the ROMs is nice but kinda sucks as it doesnt cycle thru the lights... meaning if i have a missed call (red), voice mail (purple) and a SMS (blue) only my red light will only flash... will not cycle thru meaning with lightflow, it would flash red, then purple, then blue... the built in one in the ROMs will only show red...
just an fyi
search for light manager great led control and no wakelocks.
Can someone confirm whether they can get different colours other than green on the led please? I really rely on led manager for notifying me and it doesn't work. I appreciate that it may not be compatible yet so I installed an led tester and used HTC diagnostics in safe mode and I only get green!!

I'm pretty sure this is a hardware limitation of the LED.
I had done some searching when I couldn't get LightFlow to work, and if I understand what I read correctly, HTC uses LEDs that can only produce a few colors and also has them controlled or locked in a way that prevents most of the applications from being able to access them.
I have not yet been able to get any of the apps that I'd like to be able to access the LED to be able to do so properly. PhoneAlarm can't and Textra, the app I am using for text messaging also can't.
If you've got an app that is able to access the LED and control alerts in even three colors, that's something I'd be interested in. You refer to the app two different ways--"LED Notifier" above, but in the original post you referred to it as "LED Manager." Checking the Google Play Store I see an app called "Contact LED Notifier." Is this the app that you have generating the three different colors?
Thanks!

LED Manager does work but it only gives one colour - Green. Using the diagnotics test I get 3 colours. This is a deal breaker for me and I'm returning the phone. It never occurred to me that HTC would build such a basic notifier.

I have different notifiers also able to notify with just the green color.
I'm very pleased with the phone in pretty much all other respects, and this is not enough of an issue for me to return the phone. But it is really surprising that HTC would choose to cut this particular corner on their flagship phone, especially in light of the fact that I wouldn't think that a more versatile LED would have added very much to the manufacturing cost of the phone.
