I've tried many times using the wifi tether app, to tether my 4G connection. It tethers 3G just fine, but if I turn off mobile connection, and turn on 4G, then when i wifi tether, i get no internet access. If I leave on mobile network and 4G then I get internet but its only 3G speed (~1.5-2.0 megabit). My 4G gets 8Mbit, so it would be nice to be able to tether that to my computer. Any ideas why I cant or how to fix it? I am running the Latest Fresh rom, radios, prl, etc.
I had the same problem when I was running the damage control rom with the older radios and kernel... i have never been able to tether through 4G ...
***Update*** I did some more testing, and it seems that when I have 4g enabled and 3g disabled that I actually am tethering through the 4g wimax, but it is just extremely unpredictable. One minute I can run a speedtest from my tethered device and get 1.5mbit and the next minute run the test and get like .2mbit, and the next minute It has trouble pulling up another site. It's actually much faster and consistent with the 3g.... any ideas what could be causing the 4g to be so crazy over wifi tether??
Maybe try a diff rom? I am using a modded stock rom and I thether my 4g every night at work. I am using the pre 9 tether as well.

I'm not sure, I had been using the DamageControl rom for quiet a while and had this issue, then I just reflashed to the Fresh Rom which is based on the latest sprint rom and I still have the same issue. I also updated all my radios, PRI, kernel, etc with the same result. I am also using pre9 of wifi tether
i have the same issue but things like AIM, google.com, and torrenting work..
Just can't visit any other websites.

It's possible you don't have a consistent signal penetration for your wimax. I have been able to watch youtube in hq on my laptop with evo as the access point.
Try a different location and check what your signal db's are for your wimax signal. That should help you out.

That's not it, I've tried it at many locations with full wimax signal where I get 8-11mbit on my phone and don't get squat on a WiFi tethered device.

Then that leaves the device your tethering to. Time to start troubleshooting that one since you seem to have ruled out your wimax and tether connection.

That's not it either. I've tried numerous devices and they all tether fine with 3g, just horribly with 4g. The problem has to be something with how the wimax modem and WiFi tether program communicate with eachother I would think.
I have the exact same problem with wifi tether (pre 9) and the stock rooted sprint rom. It seems that wifi tether cannot handle the faster speeds reliably. Since this is a big part of what I use the phone for, I am still paying for the sprint hotspot service until I can find a solution. The sprint hotspot is reliable and fast with 4g and 3g using the same laptop so I know that it is not my reception, laptop, etc... I have seen this mentioned on other sites as well but nobody seems to have an answer.
I have seen this issue with my phone and have seen others mention it as well. A new thread like this pops up every few weeks and then fades away.
Anyway, I decided to do a little testing of my own. When the Evo was released back in June with Android 2.1, Sprint apparently rushed it to market and didn't do anything to authenticate 4G tethering. In other words, you can tether using the Sprint app while connected to 4G and it will work whether you pay for it or not if you're using a 2.1 rom. I fired up Fresh 1.01 and the Sprint app and still got the same roughly 1Mbit speeds that I get with Android Wireless Tethering, but speed tests on the phone before and after still averaged 4Mbit+. Based on that, I'm not sure where the limitation is, but I don't think it's the fault of the tethering app itself.
As a side note, you can also verify if you're tethering with 4G or not by making a call with your phone while tethering. If you're still getting data to your computer while on the call, then you're tethering with 4G.

Haven't had time to try myself, but it looks promising.
I tried deleting fixroute.sh by doing:
adb shell
su
rm /data/data/android.tether/bin/fixroute.sh
It failed, saying that fixroute.sh does not exist so it couldn't delte it.
I tried it through terminal on my phone, and through the terminal on the pc.
I used the terminal to list (ls) the files in the "android.tether" folder and all it shows is one empty folder called "lib" and that is it!
Why am I missing the "bin" folder, and what does this mean for me trying to fix my 4g tether problem??
Any suggestions??

see what ls -a /data/data/android.tether gives you. Other than that. i would un-install and re-install.

When I measured speed from speedest.net app on my evo with 4g on, I get between 3-4 mbps download speed - and web sites and such load very fast. But when I tether my evo with 4g on and measure the speed on my laptop, I get barely 0.2-0.3 mbps download - and watching streaming content of the laptop is useless - all it does is buffer forever.
Anyone know how to make this work?
Thanks!
No one has a clue?
What tether?
Via EVO on XDA app...
I am speaking about the wireless tether app
The latest version?...ie, one off market?
Via EVO on XDA app...
I am using "2.0.5 pre 8" which came with Fresh 3.2.0.0
I'm using 2.0.5 Pre 9 and with 4G am not really doing any better than you...then again, on the phone it's slow as crap, too.
I don't think it's your wifi tether...i think it's the app giving you false readings. I used to use usb tether (before EViO went to a kernel that wouldn't support it) and the speeds weren't any better.
You can see if it works on your kernel and verify wired vs. wireless speeds...
Bumping because of the same issue
I get 8 to 10 mbit consistantly on my 4G on my speedtest app and transfer speeds when downloading files on to my phone.
However, with Wifi tether I can't get any higher then roughly 1.5 mbps on my laptop. I've tried different channels, different security settings, no security at all... etc.
I do suspect it's a software limitation because the app itself is meant to tether 1x/3g speeds, and 3G itself i'd say averages between 500kbit to 1.5mbit download speeds(I'm talking roughly... could be faster or slower).
So my guess is the developers haven't bothered with the coding to make it work well with faster connections. There's no reason it should be a hardware limitation because our wireless chips are G and N compatible. I've gotten speeds around 17mbps up and down on wifi on my evo.
I think you may be right, as I'm starting to hear from quite a few people that are thinking the same thing. Everyone has crazy speeds with the SpeedTest App, then are lucky to hit 1meg with the computer.
Can someone with the "correct" kernel test the wired tether speeds???
EDIT: Just tried Calk's EViO Beta which worked with wired tether and the speed is just as slow.
The question now is, does the Sprint HotSpot tether at 4G speeds? As I said before, Calk released a framework flash that allows the use of the HotSpot without it on your plan, but it won't work (for anyone) on 4G, and automatically kicks down to 3G...
Fixed the 4G issue!

Well.
Rooted/Rom'd/Kernel'd my phone earlier today, went just fine (netarchy 421more beta, ava v10).
Only problem is when i wifi tether, the 3rd party apps won't work. Sprint's hotspot works fine but when i try to connect with barnacle/a couple others it connects, then about 10 seconds after connected i lose internet access, but the wireless signal is still being recieved. I fiddled with settings etc and no luck.
Sprint's stock app works fine, and 3g tether is my primary connection source as i live in the middle of nowhere (good for everything but fps games, 200ping not cool). My connection shows 3 {+/-1} bars most of the time, speeds top out at 200kb/s dl. If i use sprint's hotspot app in my rooted phone do i still have to pay 30$/m for the hotspot service?
i don't recall any outside links in my post. (edit, declares all (at) symbols outside links.)
edit; lack of responses. easier question; Does a rooted phone using sprint's hotspot app still have to pay 30$/mo for use of it?

ok, so your using barnacle to do you tethering. Unless sprint hotspot is unlocked with calkuins hack, then yes you will have to pay for the tethering using, i believe it wont work if havent already paid for the feature. I suggest checking back with the Original Poster's ROM thread. Try using wireless tethering! the best out there, try this link
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
Note: all the PRE-releases are EXPERIMENTAL, and can cause Fcs (force close) so if you dont feel comfortable with a pre-release, dl a stable set, ex: 2.02 (something like that) give me back results if this works for you bro.
ava v10 came with the latest version of that, i don't understand why it isn't working correctly.
I can connect/recognize but as soon as i try to load a page it goes using that.
That'd be with 100% signal strength + connected and "no internet access"

ava 10....haha, ok. The sprint hotspot it hacked. Whatcha do is:
1)activate wireless tethering, and sprint hotspot should activate too.
2)connect to your wireless tethering, not the hotspot, then turn off wireless tethering, and your pc will lose the connection.
3)try turning wireless tethering back on, and connect as fast as possible. It should go through this time. Happens to me and a few others that run roms with calkuin's tether hack.
Report back with result.

well lets fix this, you are new right? what kind of rom are you wanting so i can give you the link to a good rom.
Just look for MIUI 11.12 or 11.19
Virus base and Virus Anthrax series
also FRESH
Myn's WARM twopointwo
and another good rom is CM 6.1
last but not least Ultimate Droid
I have a problem that I cannot find a fix for.
I have used the 4g hotspot hack that is implemented in Calkulin's 2.7 rom and WiFi tether; neither of them work.
WiFi tether will start with errors regardless of whats used. So thats it for that one..
4g Hotspot hack will allow connection in 3g and 4g, but the 4g is roughly 10kbps down. 3g is faster.
I used it on my tablet which is the Lenovo K1 and thats where the speed test is run.
Next I tried it for my laptop. It connected with limited connectivity and after 5 minutes it got a connection. I went to speedtest and it lost connection. This was with 4g when I have full 4g bars. Same issue with 3G anyway so it wont make a difference.
Speed test app on my phone gets about 10-12mbit down with 4g. Im really lost as to why its doing this.
went from EK02 to EL13 to EL26.. no luck.
Same Here
I am actually having the same problem. I've been looking through the treads to see if anyone has posted a solution, but you're actually the first person I've found that has mentioned it. Either with 4G or 3G on, I', getting less than .45 Mbps on devices connected to my Sprint Hotspot. Meanwhile if I run a speed test on my phone, my 4G connection is anywhere from 3 to 5 Mbps. Very frustrating.
OP which versions of wifi tether have you attempted?
Here's what i would do. I would update to Calk's 2.9.1 Rom, and flash a new modem (el29 is my current fave). Update PRL and Profile, reboot for good measure. Use the stock Sprint Hotspot app (set security if you choose) and it should work. My fiance's phone is running all that perfectly.
Solution : I am a heavy data user and I use the Sprint hotspot with 4G and at first I was having problems then I found a way to make it work. first you MUST keep 4G on and not let it idle at all . Second when you enable the hot spot let it settle for about 5 minutes to allow the hotspot to set the right channel for WiMAX if not it will not connect and also will give you low speeds. third keep the charger connected.

3rd party tethering apps (ie, wifi tether, usb EasyTether, bluetooth tether) are not subjected to the 5GB Hot Spot Sprint limitation. The data used by these apps are seen as "phone data" which is unlimited, whereas Hot Spot data is limited to 5GB with overage charges/fees.
Am I right?
Plus... it's bad enough having the phone run on 4G now you want it to act like a wireless router transmitting over wifi to tether a laptop. HOT HOT HOT
I think 4G tethering is most efficient and "coolest" in temperature over USB Tethering. If you must tether wirelessly, then Bluetooth is probably better than wifi. Not as big of a battery drain.

I'm using v3-beta-6. I can connect using 4g, browsing websites and such. But for some reason, the down steam speeds are capped at ~0.7Mbs when I run a speed test. On my phone, I get 10Mbs down. I know its using 4g because the ping time is much lower and my upload stream is 1.5Mbs.
On 3g, i'm only getting .85 Mbs down and 0.5Mbs up

I am a little confused because I see the link posted for the 4g hotspot fix which has been out for quite some time now. Also as far as it causing issues with Sprint you can rest assure if that was the case it would be posted all over this community. Also the data usage restrictions do not apply for phones but for actual Hotspot devices. Please go to the link listed above flash the hotspot mod and enjoy life..... It works I am on it right now....

I am a little confused because I see the link posted for the 4g hotspot fix which has been out for quite some time now. Also as far as it causing issues with Sprint you can rest assure if that was the case it would be posted all over this community. I am not sure why your phone is not working properly with the wifi tethers but I can assure you that Sprint Hotspot on our phone works quite lovely. Also the data usage restrictions do not apply for phones but for actual Hotspot devices. Please go to the link listed above flash the hotspot mod and enjoy life..... It works I am on it right now....

Actually the title says "plz help with 4g tethering". I had it working with sprint hotspot as well but not at 4g speed. I had tried other app android wifitether and barnacle with no luck. Thanks to ctbears I got easy tether working with 8mbdwn/1.34 up.

I'm not sure what hot spot thread you were in but the hot spot hack works on 3g and 4g. And it reads now with 4g not help with 4g... I've used it on both ek02 and el29 with no issues. I hardly ever use sprints crappy 3g and I'm tethering fine. Also take into consideration the hot spot is infrastructure and can be access by more than just computers unlike the tether apps on the market which all are ad hoc...

Edit: I just realized somebody posted the link to the hot spot hack and it clearly says it has 4g. I'm done with this thread... LOL!

Meant to edit my 1st post and I quoted myself.. Wow I must be smoking some good ish!!!
I have Calk 2.8.1 which supports sprint 4g hotspot. But in reality, I can never get download speed past the 3g speed. Upload is fast but download seems to be capped to 3g speed a confirmed by other users. EasyTether blows them all away with 4g speed of 8-10 Mbps. But of course it is not wireless and does not support infra structure mode.
Here's what I did to get full 4g speed while tethering via wifi..
Go to market and install filter proxy..
Open application, enable it and remember port number (Default is 8000)
Start wifi tethering..
Setup proxy in your browser, point it to your phone's ip address and port 8000 (if you use default)
Do this for http, https and ftp..
And you are all set.. Test your speed.

I can't seem to find the exact app. Will this work with Sprint Hotspot WIFI tethering or just the 4G Android Wifi Tether.
I just tested Android WifiTether 3.1beta 6 and it seems to pass the full 4g speed to connected device. I am losing 10% or less in 5 tests.
Hi, hoping someone here can help with this issue…
I have read through the Q&A and tried the fixes mentioned with only one working – the proxy server setting posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=966418
My problem is that prior to this rom, no fix was necessary – wifi tether on 4g was as fast as the speeds I was getting on the phone itself. Now I am lucky if I break 200 kBs /sec tethered (w/o the fix). And this fix only works for surfing and downloads via the browser. I still get the same crappy speeds if I am dl a torrent.
I am running MikG 3.11 – no mods, themes, or kernels. Just the plain rom. Using Amron recovery and wiped everything before install. No partition. I used to run Konis III, then the Konis IV and both worked fine with wifi tether (2.0.7) “out of the box”.
I’ve tried several different versions of wifi tether, ran the command to remove the routefix.sh , cleared the dalvik-cache, all with no luck. Have updated radio, prl, wimax, etc, and updated my profile. I read somewhere about unlocking wireless n, so I am about to give it a try, but hoping maybe someone here has an idea. I see most of the posts are older, so maybe there is something easy I am missing.
Tia for any help.

I never really had any luck with the tethering apps or unlocked sprint hotspot. They were all fairly slow for me. The only rom that had great tethering (built in) was CM7. For some reason, Sense roms never tethered well for me.
Yeah it turns the 4g radio off when you turn on the the Sprint hotspot use this

I use the Jan build so I haven't tried the new but they all have worked flawlessly on 4g

I don't use the hotspot, only wifi tether for 4g. i've tried many versions with no luck.
trukenx, are you on a sense rom? do you get full 4g speeds? i'm just a bit frustrated because it used to work on Konis (sense rom), and then not for mikg 3.11. I falshed back to konis and now that won't work properly either (meaning i won't get full 4g speeds while tethered - i can tether, just at way reduced speeds ).
i'll keep trying other builds of wifi tether. Evocm7, do you get full 4g speeds when tethered on cm7?
thanks again

I was never able to test tethering with 4g since Sprint scrapped WiMAX before they brought it to my area. However, 3g tethering was much faster with cm7's built in tethering than an app or unlocked hotspot on a sense Rom so I would assume the same would go for 4g. I do not have my EVO or Sprint anymore to test in an area with WiMAX. Just couldn't stand sprints internet anymore. Miss my EVO though

ad blocker maybe? i know it slows down 4g on the phone itself
great point with the adblocker, it could be limiting the data pass through on the tethering also i would wipe the data on the currect hotspot or back up and completely uninstall it also check the settings on other tethering app open garden was out and pretty much mirrored the free WiFi tether code... and lastly check the setting and firewall of the device you are using make sure that is also not blocking or limiting the network speeds of you tethering connections.. eg port blocking, bandwidth throttling, etc.

Thanks, but no luck. Odd that it used to work fine, then all of sudden not anymore. Well, using the proxy settings I can get good speeds via the browser. Any settings for utorrent to get the same speeds? I tried using the same settings posted for the proxy fix, but no dice...
thanks again.
