I just ordered a new 16gb class 10 (speed matters to me ) card to replace the slow crappy stock card my evo came with.
Anybody has experience on what the proper steps are to transfer the data from the old card to the new card?
Is it as simple as cloning the old card like a hard drive ?
Any guides available?
Thanks in advance for all the guidance and input.

Just transfer it all on a computer then transfer that into the next card, unless you have a card reader then just transfer the content from card to card using the phone and card reader.
Awesome!
So no hidden files, directories...mbr's to clone?
Easy as pie then
Thanks.

There's nothing mission-critical stored on the EVO's sd card. If there was I would've been in trouble because the minute I got my EVO home I pulled the sdcard and put in my own. Didn't bother to transfer anything that was on it.

Have no idea what the problem is, I copy files on to it while the card is in my computer, put the SD card back in the phone and nothing is there. I've formatted probably about 5-6 times now. Could I have a corrupt file on the card that could be causing the problem? Can I format the card and start the phone with a blank card? Thanks to anyone that can help.

I got a new 16GB card a while back, and formatted it, then restored by SD card backup to it. I then put the card in my phone, and everything was gone. At that point, I had the phone format it, then re-added things by just drag and drop, no issues.
So, I'm back to having an issue again. Everything I put on is still there, but I can't transfer anything from my computer. The files appear to transfer through windows explorer but aren't there after disconnecting from the computer.

Some of the newer SD cards have a physical write-protect toggle on them, similar to old diskettes or cassettes.
Read elsewhere that once write protect spot located on the SD, someone put a piece of tape over the toggle tab, and it worked.
Assuming the same r/w tab is in the correct position on the SD card USB 'holder' when it's in the PC.
Longshot, but a possibility.

No tab on mine. Now I'm able to copy files through the wifi file explorer app but copying while connected by cable doesn't work. It does, but the files aren't there afterwards. I also get the sd card is mounted read only error every once in a while. I'm not sure what to do, I hate to drop 50 bucks on another sd card if I don't need to.
I'm buying a new sd tomorrow from walmart question one is..any 16gb micro sd from walmart will work on my evo right? Second..how can I transfer all my data? Is there an app or anything and what about all my apps installed to the sd do i have to reinstall them? Thanks

It should work. Just copy every folder and transfer to your new one. Then just put into your phone. It will have all your data.
Sent using my EVO running AZRAL X V 3.1
Make sure if its a windows machine to go into control panel/folder options/ and enable show all files, show protected operating system files.
Then just copy and paste, if not you'll miss a few file types in the xfer
Swyped from a galaxy far far away......
Just copy the files the on the other sdcard just paste it.. Thats easy.. ( u gotta do it on the computer. )

Done this formatted new sd card several times and the files are missing once i put in the evo. Kingston 32gb done on Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Ubuntu all with the same results. Any ideas anyone? Thanks in advance.
rs.
Make sure you've got a FAT32 formatted card.
It is FAT32. i download anything on the evo to card and once i connect it to the pc it gets erased. Bad card i think?
I just got a 64gb class 6 microSD card, and Ive had my phone for a while. Needless to say, I have a good bunch of apps on my sd and little app space left. How do I transfer the app data? If its an easy copy all and paste, let me know so Im not wasting anyone's time here. I guess the real question is if there is a flexible app partition on my stock sd card? Thanks ahead

Someone with a bit more experience might be able to say I'm wrong, but from what I understand it's simply open data. My guess would be:
- Plug into your PC
- Copy into a folder
- Swap over the card
- Paste back into the new card
And it should work away. I may be wrong as I've never tried it...

Yes it is a simple copy ans paste. I can vouch for it since I did it when upgrading from stock 8gb card to a 32gb card. Just copy and paste everything. All apps you have on the sd card will work with the new card and data will be preserved. Just copy and paste.
Thanks, didnt wabt to walk into the woods blind.

I popped my sd card out of my s2 skyrocket and tried to put it in here and it says sd card damaged following another tutorial on xda on how to recover the data on it. It had all my family albums and such on it as well as my music and app data. Has anyone else had a issue with theres? Im using a 32gb class 10 made by patriot. Thanks for the tips if u leave some.

Have you tried to plug the phone in to your PC with the card mounted in the phone to see if it will mount as storage? You can also If you have an adapter microSD to SDcard and a sdcard slot on a PC or know someone who does try and read it from a PC. Have you tried to put it back in the skyrocket and see if you still get the error? GL

If you manage to copy all the files to your PC, try looking at this video. I had a similar issue when I switched from a Razr Maxx running a custom rom to a GS3. Might work for you...

Hey guys! I keep getting a message up top that says " you can safely remove sd card" and I can't get to my pics or music. Does anyone know what that is and how to fix it? Thanks in advance!

Try inserting your sd card into your PC to see if it can read it. You may need to reformat using FAT32.
It could also be a sign your sd card is on the fritz. There are a TON of threads that discuss SD card issues with the SGS3. (As a matter of fact, I had a Sandisk 32gb go belly up on me last month.)

I had a similar problem. I think you need to use Kies to transfer files from the PC to the Phone. If you want to transfer directly to the card, you need to remove it and put it in an SD Reader.
sounds like a bad sdcard, reformat the card if it is readable on the PC, if not then it's time for a new one. SdCards go by pretty quick these days it seems.
If it is just bad, and I reformat it, will it wipe everything on it?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Yes, a reformat will wipe everything.

Especially on this phone.
I've been lucky, I'll be next probably.
What brands are you guys buying? I have two 16gb AmazonBasics Class 10s in 2 S3s, no issues yet. I've come to really like AmazonBasics stuff. I buy the HDMI cables all the time. Always the newest specs, almost always the cheapest.
Ok, something strange happened.. just for grins I went to drop box and exported some pics to my sd card and it shows in the gallery as sd card with those pics in the folder. However, when ya try to mount sd card, it still said safe to remove.

Spend the $15 to get a new card already. My 2c. Even if the card isn't the issue, it's a not a huge loss. Will need it eventually.

That's what happened to me with my Sandisk 32gb Class 4 card - I was able to get it to read/write/format on my PC but it wouldn't co-operate with my phone. After a few tries with the phone, I tried again with my PC but to no avail - it ended up going belly up. Ended up exchanging it for a new one.
However, I bought a Topram 16GB Class 6 card (recommended by another XDA member) and I'm trying that one out now to see how long that one lasts.
