Just read this- I can't find it anywhere online yet, but it might be available in store at T-mo.
Link:
http://www.tmonews.com/2010/12/the-mytouch4g-dock-has-arrived/
EDIT: Changed title so as not to get anybodies hopes up.
(OPINION- UNDERWHELMING)
Its does NOT use the dock pins. It uses the microusb port thus does not launch the dock app. Just FYI before we get 10,000 "does it use the pins?" questions. Source.
FYI, there are links in the tmo forum that I linked where you can purchase it but EVERYWHERE is sold out already.
EDIT: Fixed source.
Awesome, thanks for the info...and the save! Lol

I guess if they did have the pins, it wouldn't be able to rotate the device into the upright position. This would be more secure. When I had the N1 dock, one little nudge and the device would fall to the floor
@Kid Poker, man that's crap,o don't know if it would be practical, buy it would be nice if they make the mt4g dock in a way that it would use the micro usb and the pins, so it would stay in place better than just sitting on a few contacts.

Sorry I don't have pics, but had some hands on time with the dock. It does use the usb connector and swivels, and has bluetooth. $50 in a T-Mobile store, but buy 2 $3.99 straps with it and you get 30% off. It is a snug fit. I imagine a body skin will still fit, but no case will work with it.

lol Oh tmobile, I will never understand your pricing structure- but it's awesome! As far as a snug fit- thats what I kinda figured, I bought a Zagg full skin and a SS realook for the display (a little excessive I know- but hey that 50% off black friday deal from Zagg was awesome) instead of a case, so I could use the docks when they come out. Appreciate the info... but, do you work for t-mo, how did you manage to get access to the dock already???
Why would the dock not use the pins? Can we assume other docks will come out in the future that do use them?

Just walked in the store, the downtown Minneapolis store has two of them. If I had been able to split it up on my bill I would have gotten it, but my credit is burned up with the MT4G. I'll have cash on me tomorrow, I'll pick one up and play with it for a while if they're still in stock. I'll post some pics tomorrow night.
wow $50 for a dock that uses the micro usb port, i wonder if you could do better with ebay knock offs. I'm sure you can probably not as nice but it'll cost 1/5th of the price.
What is the point of having a dock like this that DOESN'T utilize the pins on the phone? That doesn't make much sense at all to me.
You missed the "bluetooth" part, I see. Still, should be at least $10 cheaper imo.

Cool, I'll keep an eye out. The pics make it look a little top heavy with the phone in it- I wonder how it balances out- wonder if the base is weighted...

Yeah $50 is steep- the other links are showing $38 though- that seems more of a fair price if it's a legit product. I'm thinking I would buy this for use in my office, and wait for the one that makes use of the contacts to use at home.
I'm using it right now. Got it at T-Mo retail. It looks like every store only got two in-stock for some reason? I guess I could take pics, but it would be with my crappy old iPhone 2G camera, which would be really low-res and pointless. :/
So, the quick-n-dirty 'review', for those of you who are as nerdy as me:
Synapsis: Don't bother!
myTouch 4G Swivel Dock
Pros:
Nice, weighted base (where the BT antenna is housed, along with micro USB intput and 3.5mm audio out). It is definitely weighted and nice feeling.
Looks fairly sleek, despite the cheesy 'my' logo on the front of the dock.
Bottom of the 'weight' is rubberized, so it doesn't slide around.
The back of the swivel stand has the same, soft, rubberized material so the back of the phone does not scratch on the plastic.
It serves the purpose of securely (emphasis on this) docking your device. That thing isn't coming out without some force.
No Bluetooth PIN is required to pair (simply pair in BT settings).
Allows you to charge and sync over USB (think 'iPod / iPhone dock')
Streams audio from the phone to the dock, via BT.
Cons:
Does not come with an extra USB cable.
No solution to use the FM Radio without just dangling your headset off of the side (in fact, the 3.5mm from the phone is blocked by the cradle). So, so, so, very lame. I realize I could just buy a cheap FM Alarm Clock, but what's the point of having all of this cool tech in my phone if there's no practical way to use it? Wasted opportunity, if you ask me.
Getting the phone in there at first, you feel like it might be really easy to damage the USB port.
A small amount of 'rattle' to the swivel mechanism, but otherwise, sturdy.
It is somewhat difficult and awkward to seat the device into the dock; this is a really snug fit.
BT audio kind of sucks biggity balls. Highs crack and there is a general layer of compression running through everything. Basically, there's no point in playing files that are encoded at anything above 64KBPS. Listening to music on high-end speakers kind of sounds like ass. So, yeah. Not sure why they didn't just route the audio through the USB port, iPhone-style? It's not terrible, but if you're an audiophile, you will cringe a little bit. Directly inputting to the phone sounds 200x better.
There doesn't appear to be a way to pair the dock with your computer, to try and re-route the audio stream (super nerdy stuff on my part).
T-Mo, in all their wisdom, left out support for landscape viewing throughout most of the OS. Really bone-headed and stupid (same complaint I have with using the phone as a GPS device -- sideways contacts / phone = stupid).
The docking pins are not used in any way, shape, or form (no automatic 'desk mode' / no automatic alarm clock). Lame. So lame. I'm so disappointed by this, because the docking pins were one of the main reasons I went with this phone (assuming super-fancy docks would be coming out).
The 3.5mm audio cables you plug in can very easily be unseated / pulled out from a bump. I don't know if this is because I'm using super-professional-grade cables that have a hefty weight / insulation to them? But if the cable applies any pressure to the dock's input, I get the infamous analog 'BUZZZZZZ!' sound. It's not cheap, I just think the cables are too heavy-duty.
The Dock wraps over the volume and lockscreen keys. Kinda dumb, but I understand why this has to be. I imagine the BT audio normalizes anyway.
They really should've thought out how to integrate their docks with the OS a bit more.
It's not terrible, but it's not mind-blowing. I got it for 20% off, and was able to use credit from a returned accessory. I got it for about $30, and I think that's probably a more reasonable price for what amounts to nothing more than a fancy USB port with lousy Audio Out capabilities. It's a solid and safe way to charge your phone at night, basically. I'll probably keep it, but it is a bit of a letdown, if you were expecting to drop your phone into it and have it automatically launch some kind of cool interface. I think they should've routed the 3.5mm stream from the USB input, and that they should've found a way to include an FM antenna into the device to make use of the super nice FM radio app. The fact that it doesn't automatically go into Desk Dock Mode is infinitely disappointing to me.
Basically, if your only other solution was to have it nervously balance on the edge of your table, sitting on your laptop, with your cat / dog or a child running around the house? This is a much better and safer solution.
If they just built landscape support into Sense, this would be pretty sweet. But I guess that's why they have it 'swivel', right? Lame.
Feel free to ask me any more questions, if you've got 'em.
@Jon C Wow, I'm impressed! Kudos man, I have a hard time typing out a whole paragraph. Excellent review! So, is the bluetooh in the cradle just for you to be able to plug in headphones at the base of the unit, or is there a built in speaker? I like their attention to detail with the rubberized parts you mentioned. So, with the phone being such a snug fit in the cradle via the micro usb- do you think that could cause any issues with the phone potentially being docked and undocked several times daily? I was pretty bummed when I noticed that the volume rocker is covered as while I'm @ work sitting at my desk, I like to put on Pandora with the ability to adjust the volume when I have to make phone calls. I'm thinking I will just continue using my business card holder for my phone stand- it seems to have more of the functionality I'm looking for lol.
@Jon C. Thanks for the write up! I really only want the dock to prolong the live of my micro usb port and for the auto clock function (I use it on my night stand) so I will NOT be purchasing this one. I really hope they come up with something else, total waiste to have the dock pins and not use them.
Man I miss my Nexus dock!
I updated the review a little bit. Not only does the dock block the volume keys, but it blocks the lock button and the 3.5mm out.
To answer your question: No, there is no speaker on the dock, simply a 3.5mm out.
Also, I need to stress how annoyingly difficult it is to actually seat the phone. The dock feels like it was engineered back when the phone was called the 'myTouch HD', and probably had slightly different dimensions (much like the gel cases, which do not fit exactly).
I really have to jam the phone hard against the back of the dock, to line up the USB port. I could easily see the USB port getting damaged from repeated 'misses'. The stupid little USB connector actually put a nice little dent into the side of my soft-touch paint.
Man, how the **** do you mess this up? What a letdown.
Sadly, guys, I don't think we're going to get anything better. That said, I'm really thinking about taking this thing back, based on how impossibly hard it is to even get the phone in there to begin with.
Jeez! Yeah I would take that thing back for sure. That really sucks that the stupid thing dented the side of your phone! They should give you something cool for free ;p...I'm just sayin...

Normally, my OCD would require that I swap out my current phone for another one. However, with all of the bull**** with the variances in screen quality and so forth, I'd rather not push my luck. Plus, the reps at all of the T-Mo stores around here are kind of pushy / annoying and get angry when you want to swap out phones.
Still, I am pissed. Super lame, T-Mo and HTC. What the hell were you idiots thinking?
I hope a third-party makes a dock with pin support. Odds of that happening? Slim-to-none.
Yeah, I can understand the ocd thing lol! You do have a very sad but true point about a new hit or miss phone. Just to clarify though, who is the manufacturer of the dock- HTC or tmo? You would think that they would come out with some kind of dock to utilize those contacts on the side of the phone.

I got a replacement from Amazon because my earlier defy had a random reboot problem. However now I have two phones with me and when I compare them, the newest replacement seems very plasticky. The black model of european seems to be like a bad paint job of white US model coated with a black paint. Also the volume rocker and power buttons make the plastic sound when pressed.
Is this the latest european model that is being released in the market. If yes, then most of you who bought these pieces have a sub-standard quality of this phone. I loved my old phone and the smooth finish with extra smooth buttons.
Any inputs from anyone?
I have a European version which exhibits none of the symptoms you describe.
Got mine at amazon(.fr) two weeks ago to replace my desire (it fell hard on the floor and the glass is now broken).
I see the exact same symptoms you describe: cheap power and volume buttons, and overall very plasticky look and feel. That was kind of a disappointment. Then i have been even more disappointed when i realized i wouldn't be able to flash custom roms - i miss my cyanogen.
Well, this is a kind of cheap android device and it sure feels cheap. Won't buy any another moto device nor would i recommend it, that's for sure. In the meantime i try to get the best out of it.
Your experiences sure are odd. If you had not both specified that you got your phones from Amazon, I would have thought you had used ebay and gotten some shoddy copies of a fine device.
That said, the phone does use a lot of plastic, but that is something that any review will tell you.
And who does not read at least one review before buying a device nowadays?
The same goes for what can be done, ROM-wise. I checked out XDA Developers before I clicked the final 'Purchase' button, so in that regard there were no surprises for me either.
Sure reviews tell you it uses plastic. But whatever you read, unless you experience it for yourself you don't really realize. Concerning the power and volume buttons, i didn't realize it wasn't normal until i read the op.
Beside, one only really reads what seems to matter at the time of the reading: this is a super-resistant device -- put it under water, throw it against the walls, hell, yeah, i'm all in. That's what got me on board, i didn't really thought about roms, and next time i will pay more attention.
So, yes, i'm a bit disapointed, but Android still is a great toy, even with *that* device.

I think you dint read my question quite right. What i opined was that my first defy which I just returned back to amazon was a gem. It has those buttons as soft as rubber and the body build itself was different. I used it for 4months and had to give it back to due some hardware problem. Now the one I got yesterday seems a completely different build. Now those are things that no review will be able to tell you right?. Something I thought I will share with other users. It might be that Motorola just started to produce this kind of cheap builds owing to surge in demand.
That said, no complaints on this one too. But i do miss that classic finish and soft soundless buttons.

Did you get a BT/BF or blue dot device from Amazon.fr?
I was planning on buying a Defy from Amazon but this is bad news...
Why is it so hard to get a decent Defy... First there was the earpiece problem, now this.
I got mine from clevertronic.de in mid November, think it wasn't even out on amazon.de by then.
I also thought that the power and volume button seemed rather cheap looking... and clacking (at the beginning I didn't know where that clacking sound came from, thought something was wrong with the drive or something).
But until now I thought that'd be normal so I didn't complain.
Really odd.
"I tought this was normal until I read this post"
I don't really understand these people complaining about previously-normal (to them) things. It's like when the fear spreads for a pandemic.
I have got a BT33 black european defy, and I repute the build quality excellent even for that price. Sure, it is plastic, but what did you expect from a €300 phone? Brushed aluminium?
Do you think that more expensive phones are all metal builds?
Just look at the Acer Liquid Metal: you can long see it from the pics it won't be nearly the same build quality of the Defy, that it will screak when held in hand. Despite the name, it only comes with a small strip of metal in the back. I also guess the front glass is not even glass, let alone gorilla glass. And that's for €50 more than a Defy.
Anyways mine has no creaking when squeezed in the hand, the back cover paint is soft-touch and well done, the front bezel is well built, glass is perfectly aligned, back cover not bulging, side covers intact, and the volume keys only make a slight click if I shake the phone.
You're all being too picky.
Mine is an all black European model. The buttons are plastic rather than rubber but they don't rattle about or click, and i've never thought of them as being cheap-feeling.
The paint finish on the screws did start to wear off pretty quickly though.
Also have the european black model, from november.
Plastic buttons that rattle slightly, and frontshell dont fit 100% with the backshell. Everything else looks quite expensive.
For around 300€ with the powerful hardware inside its a catch in my opinion.

FWIW, T-MO USA just sent me a replacement Defy. Not the Euro model, of course. But the same high quality of my original and has the BT prefix.

What are you referring to with 'Euro model'? Do you mean the version with the white rubber section, as opposed to it being black?
I wasn't aware either was area/continent-specific, as both can be purchased in Europe.
If you are somehow implying that European build quality is less than.. well, the build quality of where-ever you are, I doubt there is any difference.
To strengthen my argument i am going to post snaps of the two variants tonight. Hopefully my wife should not have mailed it off to amazon.

I meant the phone mentioned above with the all black case. Not saying the Europeans don't know how to make good phones since they're most all made in China anyway (I hear there are some made in South America). But the poster was suggesting he had gotten a low quality phone. T-MO in the US only ships the phone with the white case, I believe.

Indeed, they're made in Asia - I would have suggested that as a counter, but seeing your reply, that's not necessary.
Ah, I see. I think some materials had to be different due to this phone being sturdier. Plastic and rubber can be very durable.

I'm not sure what you're referring to with BT/BF and "blue dot device", so i guess that's a no: i didn't get such a phone from amazon.
So to kick it off, I've got two "pouches" that are supposed to be watertight. I haven't checked if they are actually water proof, but I can say something about the fit (or misfit).
1. Had the Hagløfs Watatait for the S1. Plastic made it impossible to insert the phone. I had to use a metallic case on the phone to get it in the pouch.
The S3 have the same problem. Its slightly less "clingy", but edges on phone get stuck before fully inserted. There is no room for a phone with case.
2. Got the Overboard case from mobilefun. S3 slides nicely into the pouch. Locking feels safe enough, to the point of being over-engineered. The clear plastic window is slightly small, making it hard to pull down the notification menu. Also a bit fiddly to find the power and volume buttons.
Its also a very tight fit. I suspect its made for the iphone, with room for protection for that phone. Any case that offer enough protection for the S3 make it too big for this pouch.
So anyone else have a watertight pouch case they want to share with the rest of us?
I'm a biker, after much trial and error I found the Northcore surfing cases and bought one for my old phone (Desire). Got my S3 today and while tight it does fit the bare phone with no problems and leaves it easily operable. I usually have the phone strapped to my left forearm and have some capacitive thread stitched into the index finger of the right glove and a bluetooth headset for sound. Add in Tasker to deal with automation and it makes the phone really easy to use.
This is the beastie:
CLICKY
I'm hoping Liquidpel will be available for this device. http://www.liquipel.com/
Basically they coat the entire phone + internals with hydrophobic material, that way even when water gets into the phone, it remains working.
I used a waterproof pouch when I was on my last cruise. Put my epic touch in it and went snorkeling for hours with it in my pocket. It was under water the whole time, no leaks. I bought it from Amazon.com.

The tight fit is a problem, to be ideal, it should be room for something like Otterbox defender or Ballistic-whatever-its-name-was. A drop in one of the pouches with bare phone is nearly as bad as a drop of the bare phone, and SIII doesn't take a lot of abuse on its own.
So looking for something with a bit more room, that still have decent opening to operate the screen.
I suspect you'll have problems finding anything that big, the S3 isn't a small handset to start with and by the time it's cased up it doubles the bulk.
Good luck :good:
If your looking for waterproof bag i have been using a type of waterproof ziplock for years. its called Aloksak. I have swam across rivers a few time and my gear in it is always dry.
Its certified waterproof to 60 metres and tested by the Navy Diving Unit.
I got mine through amazon and there are alot of sizes some even can fit a rifle. I have some that are really beat up scratches and stretch marks from sharp object and they are not even leaking.
Screen is 100% usable and its dirt cheap.
I am looking for a decent water proof case myself. I have ran across the drycase from drycase.com and have contacted them in an attempt to verify that the s3 will fit in the standard case without having to get the tablet sized one.
It does not offer drop protection however they say its rated to 100 feet (30 meters) so i should be able to take this on a 40 foot reef dive.
I really want to get rid of my camera housing as its for an old sony 5mp camera that barely works anymore.
Drycase
I just received my Drycase from Amazon. So far here are my thoughts on it with the S3. I have never owned a waterproof case like this before so perhaps some of these issues are common to cases like this. Keep in mind I have only had the case for a couple hours so these are just my initial impressions.
1. It is a little difficult to get the phone into and out of the case. It sticks to the plastic sides of the case.
2. Although the Drycase sales rep told me that the S3 would fit in the case and it does for the most part, it is hard to get it far enough into the case so that you can connect the headphone adapter and still have it be out of the way of the top black flap and closing mechanism.
3. Once the phone is in the case and the air is pumped out, the plastic sides of the case fit pretty tight to the body of the phone. This is nice as it makes the screen easy to see, however it also makes the volume and power buttons on the sides of the case difficult to press. I was trying to use the case to take underwater photos and video and because you can not use the touch screen when underwater I mapped the volume down button to the camera shutter, but it was difficult to press this button when the phone was in the case.
4. When the headphone/microphone jack inside the bag is connected to the phone any sound you record with a video will not be recorded since I assume the internal microphone is disconnected. So if you want sound with video you would need to either not plug in the internal cable or connect an external mic. Not a big deal for shooting underwater but if you are going to be moving between above and below water you may want to just leave this cable disconnected.
Anyone seen or tried this pouch?

Also , FYI, when you are under water, you cant use the phone well, it just wont pick up your print.

How do you get the headphone line out of the OB pouch? The one with integrated headphone jack looks interesting. Maybe the Note-sized pouch is big enough for a S3 with a Ballistics case. Worth a try?

Wow sorry lmao I thought it was a different thread. I guess I shouldn't be typing responses when I'm extremely tired -.-

How do you get the headphone line out of the OB pouch? The one with integrated headphone jack looks interesting. Maybe the Note-sized pouch is big enough for a S3 with a Ballistics case. Worth a try?

THERE IS A wire on the inside that connects to the external one. I'musing it now

The LG QuickCover is now available in the Play Store...

Yes, I ordered it :victory:
$50 :/ hopefully... third-party manufacturers produce their own version of a quick cover

It's all about the quality.
Besides, unlike a lot of flip covers, this one appears to have a magnet to turn the device on and off.
How can they not have a hole for the notification LED? Dealbreaker for me.
Who am I kidding? I wouldn't have paid $50 for a case anyway.

One I am currently looking at: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GQO4T60/ref=gno_cart_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1EU8BQXI93JVJ
Another by the same company: http://www.amazon.com/Nillkin-Fresh...d=1384912578&sr=1-10&keywords=nillkin+nexus+5
There's these 3 aftermarket ones:
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Nillkin-V-Sm...ll_Phone_PDA_Cases&hash=item3a87630794&_uhb=1
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Nillkin-Fres...hone_PDA_Cases&var&hash=item35ce434311&_uhb=1
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Mofi-Rui-Sli...hone_PDA_Cases&var&hash=item3cd87f0385&_uhb=1
WOW £45.98 in the UK $74.10
Just ordered it! WOOT!! Hate the price but it'll look so good. Wife will kill me though $67 bucks is very steep for a case...seriously!
The price seems crazy. But then I realize I usually end up buying multiple cases for my phone anyway because I never seem to be satisfied with the cheaper cases. So perhaps I should just suck it up and spend $50 on a case I like instead of $50 on 4 different cases I don't care much for. I'm still working that argument out in my head though.
I am disappointed to see though that the NEXUS logo isn't on the back on the LG cover like it is on the bumper case. I realize it's the "LG" quick cover, but still, at that price the Nexus logo would have been nice. At least it would make the decision a little easier for me.

I agree completely with the LED thing. Since this device has a round speaker, it's just begging to have a circle cut out of each side...
Too bad there isn't a cutout for the notification light. I wonder if one could be added with a hole punch. That's a lot of money to to find out. You must be able to answer it with the case on or do people answer it, close the cover and then listen?
Got mine this morning. The look, fit and feel is perfect (well, for me anyway). I had gotten used to the S-Cover feature of the S4 so it was nice to have the little magnet back. Not willing to take a hole punch to it just yet though.

The hole would be nice, but aesthetically, it would not look as good as the screen border is black and would not contrast well with the White. They are going for a smooth consistently white look and putting that hole there would mess it up. But I digress.
Too bad no NeXus branding on the face.
Anymore comment on that one?
Is there even a point in having the cutout for the speaker? They could just reverse it and have the cutout for the LED instead of the speaker. Do people actually talk with the cover on?
Can you comment on the cover after some time of use?
Ordered Mine last week and was excited to get it and low and behold....Google decided to lump my package with a 184 others and didn't list the contents of my package, thus, it's being held until the proper paperwork goes through. Holy Crap I'm irritated! I was expecting it to be delivered today but no....:crying:
...Ok...I'm done whining.
I got mine last week. Unfortunately I have notices one of the corners doesn't quite go in properly. The screen sticks up slightly. For the money I was expecting it to be perfect. Rang Google, and just waiting to see if they will refund me or not as they would not replace.
EDIT - They have agreed to refund me.

MIne's still great. Fits and feels perfect.
Is anyone else noticing that the hinge has some play in it when the device is closed.
Should I be worried about this. Only had it a week so could return back to At&t before the 14th day. Wanted to see if anyone else is experiencing the same thing?
I don't have any play in the hinge when closed and I've had the Fold almost a month now. I'd say return it back to AT&T before the return policy and exchange it just for peace of mind and what seems to be a factory defect.
The hinge becomes loose over a period of time, and when closed, the plastic trim around the inner screen creaks. I've gone through 3 folds and they all had this issue.

Did you return it. I still have a few days before my 14 days are up. Thinking of returning it.
Who cares lol.
You think I'm gonna return my $100K Mercedes when the gear shift starts feeling different? No you deal with it. It's a physical part...

What if your check engine light comes on? Just deal with it because it's a light?
As far as the noise, I'm now on my 4th fold and all but the newest one makes the creaking noise. It's the nature of the beast. I don't like something that cost $2k to sound like something that costs a fraction of that, but for now, that's the price to pay. For me, the noise doesn't bother me enough to part with my Fold. There are too many great things about the phone that I'm not willing to give up lol

do you think theres a chance your 4th one doesn't make any noises because of the "1st batch blues" for any tech devices?
maybe possibly you have a 2nd or 3rd batch phone?
thanks for the update though, that loosening hinge was really putting me off from buying the phone.
sucks to see that quality control is still a little random, even after all the delays.
I get a strange noise too when closed thinking of contacting samsung about this in a few days no rush bought of ebay like new no marks £1190 it was either that or the whopping £1,900 from samsung so a good saving with the buds.
