Now, I thought, "hey, I'm not a novice with flashing ROM images, nor am I a *nix or system notice..." So, I decided to cook a ROM using the Online ROM kitchen: http://evo.feeder.pk/
I had run unrevoked3 + unrevoked forever, so I had clockwork recovery.
So, I copied the zipped ROM generated off the online ROM kitchen to the sdcard and then via clockwork installed /sdcard/update.zip (the ROM).
So, everything installed okay, then upon reboot, it seems to go into a reboot loop.
Lucky for me I performed a nandroid backup before installing the newly built ROM, and I'm in them middle of performing a nandroid restore; which I hope will resolve the problem.
1) Will the nandroid restore actually restore my entire phone back to how it was previously?
2) How do I actually install another ROM properly?
These are pretty n00b questions, but any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Matt

1) Its supposed to...
2) From what it sounds like, you installed everything okay, just with a bad ROM image. Installing any of the other ROMs already posted should relieve you of your bootloops (as should the nandroid). Unless you try overclocking, which some folks experience bootloops when overclocked over 1.15.

Thank you sir. nandroid obviously did restore everything back to normal (wasn't sure to what extent nandroid backed up the device, but it looks like every single thing was backed up).
As for a ROM, I really just want the stock froyo ROM, but rooted... Do you have any suggestions? I can't go OTA since I have clockwork recovery.
Thanks,
Matt

I have flashed most of the ROMs here, but I have mostly been using CM6 (Cyanogenmod 6) since it came out. I did try Baked Snack, which is a very nice ROM with a beautiful theme, but it is Sense based and if by any chance you wanted to use a Wiimote for emulators, you cant. It is based off the HTC bluetooth stack, CM6 is not. Its kinda nice to get nightly (experimental) updates to flash if you want to also.
Its all a matter of personal preference, but my BEST results have been with CM6 - benchmark, features, and otherwise.
*E* You also may want to consider posting something like this in the Q&A forum next time...

Just flag the post and request a mod move it. There's really little reason to post a reply. It seemed like the best place given the descriptions of all the EVO sub-forums.

I have the same problem as you!!!! I posted it in the wrong forum though so I'll briefly psot my problem and maybe someone can help me. I was trying to update my radio to the latest radio and it worked. I then realized I didn't have a 4g signal and the mod I was using supports 4g. So I tried updating to the latest wimax and then my phone started rebooting. After it boots android it reboots after a bout a minute or 2.
I FIXED it with a nandroid restore which had my 2.1-1 back up which I made during the idiot proof guide. So thinking that I can always use that backup as a restore I tried re-installing the radios because I don't see how they could not work on my phone and thought maybe I had a corrupt file, but voila my phone started rebooting again, but this time nandroid restore tells me to fix it via adb restore, BUT my usb isn't working either. So I'm stuck and have no idea on how to get this thing to load my restore. Any help would be appreciated.
I didn't read you're reply. But after installing RA, I think I'll be alright...
Here's the deal from start to finish...
download and install the android SDK
install all the necessary drivers
restart in recovery mode ( adb restart recovery or hold volume down when powering on the device)
use adb shell to access the shell while the device is in recovery
1) install RA recovery using adb method (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026) This may or may not be okay with or without running unrevoked first... not sure if flash_image was placed on the device by unrevoked.
2) reboot into recovery
3) flush dalvik cache via RA recovery.
4) flush cache via RA recovery.
5) use adb push to copy a downloaded ROM zip to /sdcard/update.zip (using RA recovery to mount the /sdcard/ partition)
- I've downloaded http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7512117
6) Install update.zip from sdcard in RA recovery
- After booting into the new ROM one time, I allowed it to start and configured... then performed 3,4,5 against flashing a new kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=719763
And that should be that. I'm currently downloading the ROM, so I don't know how it'll be.
So I tried to root my EVO last night, and i stayed up til 2am doing so. I finally got it rooted and then tried to apply a theme on my phone. But, i think it was a theme for a diff. phone. I dont kno if that matters, but i dont think i applied the correct .zip file. That **** totally ****ed my phone in the ass and now it WILL NOT load past the white screen when I first turn my phone on; The "HTC EVO 4G" screen. I tried to go into BOOTLOADER, go to RECOVERY and recover my "stock ROM", by the way, FAIL..!! It didnt work and now i have no EVO. Is there anything i could possibly do to my phone to get it working back to normal. I already ordered a new phone but i figured since i'll be stuck with a piece of ****, then i might as well experiment with it. ANY SUGGESTIONS ANYBODY..??!!
You can go into the bootloader and then select clear storage, which performs a factory reset on the phone. Or try reflashing the rom again, making sure its for the evo.
Can you succesfully boot into your bootloader screen?

Damn, you already ordered a new phone?! Evo's are hard to brick. If you can still get to your bootloader, you're not bricked. What happens when you select recovery? Do you boot into recovery, or does it hang? If you're lucky enough to still get into recovery, then you probably just need to reflash a rom, any rom. If you don't have recovery, but can get to the bootloader, and have s-off, then you just need to reflash a recovery. You can do that from the bootloader, (providing you are indeed s off). Load a PC36IMG of Amon Ra's recovery to the main directory of your sd card. You'll need to take your sd card out, and put it in a different phone or in a card reader in order to transfer the file. Once it's on the main directory of your sd card, and you're positive that it's named exactly PC36IMG, put the card back in your phone. Boot to the bootloader, at this point it should scan and ask you to update. Select volume up to choose yes. That'll flash Amon Ra recovery V2.3. Once that finishes, select 'recovery' from the bootloader. That should boot you to Amon Ra. From that point, you can flash a rom using the recovery. You'd just need to load a rom to the sd card, if you don't have one on there already. Hope that helps.
And if you're bootloader is not S off, and shows S on, don't do any of the above. At that point, you'd want to run an RUU or flash a PC36IMG of a stock rom, (same directions as flashing the PC36IMG from above). That will flash you back to stock, unrooted. At that point, you could try rooting again if you want to. FInd RUU's here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884060&highlight=hboot-0.97+ruu
EDIT: the PC36IMG I attatched is Amon Ra recovery, V2.3, if you should need a recovery. And damn, when I started replying, no one had responded. I'm so slow!

Okay. You said you did what I suggested before, but what part? Did you get the amon RA recovery installed, or did you run the RUU. If you got the recovery installed, and you're s off, then you just need to flash a rom. Go to the development section and pick one out, download it, and put it on the main directory of your SD card. Then boot into recovery. Wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache. select flash zip from SD card, and then choose the rom that you put on the card. Let it flash. When its done, reboot the phone. If we aren't on the same page, let me know. I'm on the road right now, so I'm sorry if delayed. Teh roxx will take care of ya.

There's no need for negative sarcasm. We all start somewhere, and a good foundation is the start.
1. Go > http://mirror.teamdouche.net/?device=supersonic download the latest nightly
2. Go > http://goo-inside.me/gapps/latest/7/universal/ ; download the latest google apps
3. Place both files on sdcard
4. Boot into recovery, then from the main clockwork menu, wipe factory/data, cache, then scroll down to advanced, the wipe the dalvik cache, press return/go back
5. Go into install zip, choose zip, first install the cm7 nightly 30 rom, wait for it to install, click go back.
6. From the main menu, wipe your cache, then dalvik cache from the advanced menu, go back
7. Go back to install zip, choose zip, now install the gapps [google apps], let it install, then go back
8. Reboot the phone and you should be good to go.
It is slowly driving me mad. I can get into recovery and restore my current ROM (leaked GB base). However, if I flash a new rom - any rom - it flashes, reboots into white HTC boot screen, and just hangs there.
I'm using ROM manager, clockwork.
What do I do? It doesn't make sense.
Thanks for any advice.
Later.
1. Stop using ROM Manager
2. Go to the link below and download the PC36IMG.zip file for amon RA v2.3 and place it on the root of your SD card.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026
3. Shutdown your device.
4. Simultaneously press the DOWN volume button and the power button until your device starts. There will be a short pause and then a few lines of text will scroll across the screen. Afterwards, the bootloader will automatically detect the PC36IMG.zip file and prompt you to install it. Follow the easy prompts to install. Installation will take less than 10 seconds to complete. Afterwards, reboot into your new recovery. Go to the backup/restore menu and make a nandroid backup of your current setup.
5. Now go to the wipe menu and wipe EVERYTHING in it EXCEPT the SD card.
6. Go to the flash menu and flash the rom you desire to flash.

ROM Manager has its uses, but, in my opinion, it is far too easy to simply boot or reboot into recovery and flash, especially with amon RA. It has a common sense menu layout.

Just MY opinion, but ROM Manager is useless. I see more people have issues because of ROM Manager. My advice, dump it and do everything in Recovery.

I would do a clean wipe, factory/data, cache, and dalvik, then go to the bootloader, select the clear storage for overkill, then try to flash a rom.

Thanks for the quick reply man. Tried the wipe of data, cache and dalvik, rebooted to bootloader and cleared storage. Tried to install a rom and still hung up at the htc evo 4g white boot screen. Anything else I can try?
Which rom are you trying to flash? I would re-download it to make sure its not corrupted in any fashion.
Hmmm I was wondering if that might be the problem, because I've gotten this rom to flash ONCE before. It's the End of Days rom from Magnus. I got it to work the first time I tried to flash it but then at some point I rebooted it and it started boot looping to the point where I couldn't get it to load anymore. That's when I wiped, tried to reflash the rom and all this madness started. I'll try to redownload, but I figured if the ROM worked once, it should be able to work again... right? I mean I'm not flashing it any differently.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19699565/PC36IMG.zip Place that on your sdcard, boot into the bootloader and flash it. That'll reflash the amon_ra 2.3 recovery, then try flashing the rom again.
Yea I tried the Pc36img thing already too. Let the bootloader find it, applied the update, rebooted into recovery, reflashed, nothing. Same results, hung up on white evo screen.
I'm actually noticing that when I try to wipe the "sd ext" in Amon Ra's wipe menu, it just says "skipping format sdext" or something like that, is that normal?

That's normal; it only says that because you don't have that partition. The only thing I can think of at this point would be to backup everything, quickly unroot, then re-root.
My Evo is doing something similar. I flash ANY of the new Sense 2.x (or Sense 3.0) ROMs, and they just reboot on the white HTC EVO 4G screen. Ive wiped everything, used Calks Format All, Im using the latest Amons, etc to no avail. However, all AOSP GB ROMs (MIUI,CM7, EoD, etc) work like a charm! Any kind soul that knows what the hell is going on with my phone?
hello everyone this is my first time asking a question on here so forgive if i got this in the wrong section.
i was wondering if you all could tell me how to "uninstall" cyanogenmod 10 off my samsung epic, but without unrooting.
i like cyanogenmod but i have to get it off because i cant change phone lines within my account because in order to put service back on my phone sprint wants me to dial ##somenumbers# and a menu is suppose to pop up but it doesnt and i think i read somewhere around here that you dial those "codes" in the dialer because they wont work.
soo I followed qbkings method to root my phone. youtube title = how to root the samsung epic on FC09
then i installed cyanogenmod10 using his method again
I did this to two samsung epics since i have two samsung epics at my disposal and i would follow qbkings method of unrooting
but i tried that on of the epics but odin failed and it got completly bricked and I mean hard bricked. so i am extremly fearful of even attempting qbkings unrooting method since i completly bricked one of the epics trying to unroot it.
and i was thinking that since i followed qbkings method i just need to go to recovery mode after turning off the phone and then clear everything data and cache.
and then do the install zip from sd card and just install the deodexedFC09 zip file that i previously put on the card when i was rooting my phone.
and then that would be it but i am extremly fearful of messing with the phone like that because i really dont want to brick my phone so i come to you all today for your help on this because i am new to rooting and flashing roms on my phone so i didnt really know whereelse to ask.
Ive tried looking for help on the forums and the web but i did not find nothing so i just rather ask then ...
You can buy a jig for like $1-2 to jump the bricked one back in dl mode then flash full stock, as for the other, there is a boot from sdcard rom that will enable you to activate your phone without uninstalling cm10

That's exactly right. Remember to wipe data in cwm. Use titanium backup to back up any 3rd party apps and data you need first.

You can, but its probably easier to just restore the back up you made in cwm before flashing the peoples rom...

Boot into recovery, go to backup and restore, press restore, press on the backup you just made (the name will be the date). And press restorre... once you boot into recovery, its pretty self-explanitory from there on out...

I had this issue back when I had my original Evo. I just flashed it back to a stock rooted Sense ROM and it worked. If it is a stock TW ROM (The Peoples Rom is), then all Sprint codes will work.
I tried flashing two different roms (synergy and chemistry) on my sprint galaxy s3. It turns on but then wont go past the "galaxy s III" logo. I just restored my backup and all is well but I really want to get multi window on this thing so I could really use some help as to what is not letting me boot up all the way. The last thing i messed around with rooting was my DroidX and with that it really mattered a lot which version of android you were flashing from. I have 4.1.2 the most recent update. Is that why these roms are not working? Any help would be much appreciated I am very excited to get a killer rom on this bad boy.
Did you clear /data, /system, cache, and dalvik cache before flashing? If not, what is your flashing procedure?
But no, the current version should not make any difference when flashing because you are clearing everything anyway

I boot into recovery after i put the rom on to my sd card. Then wipe the factory data, cache partition, and delvik cache. I do those steps twice, then install the rom. The install seems to go fine, it always says successful at the end, it just wont go past that screen. Does it mater which version of clockworkmod I use?
You need to wipe /system too. A factory reset only clears app data, and thats no help if you're not wiping the OS as well because you're installing the new one on top of the old without cleaning up first...and thats why it wont boot because different pieces are getting mixed and not together with the files it should be with
It should say something like "format /system"

Thank you so much for your quick response. As far as I can tell, I am wiping everything I should be. I use clockwork recovery mod version: and the choices it gives you are: Wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, and wipe dalvik cache. From all the instructional threads I've read, those are the only things you need to clear out before the install. My clockwork version is v5.5.0.4 which i think might be really old. Could that be my issue? Does it matter how I rooted it? I just tryed to put jellybomb v14 on it and it didn't even give me the galaxy s III logo. Luckily it booted back into recovery though. I really don't want to hard brick this thing.
Which recovery are you using?
For TWRP, I generally recommend formating system too.
Also, make sure to flash the rom zip and THEN the gapps.

Make the switch to TWRP v2.3.1.0 (newer ones I've heard have problems) but you will be thanking me later. It's way easier and much better than CWM... just an FYI for ya!

I suggest trying a flash with TWRP. If you are unsure how to install TWRP, just download the Goomanager app, then choose install Open Recovery Script. But, before you install or change anything, look around a bit on how to install it. Make sure you follow directions step by step. After you have installed TWRP, try flashing again. Good luck!
Haha, so it looks like switching to twarp is something that i need to do, I'll start researching how to do that. I don't thing clockwork is causing the issues im having, but I could certainly be wrong. Since my phone is rooted, that also means the bootloader is unlocked rite?

Samsung bootloaders come unlocked by default, so yes
Easiest way to switch is to download Goo manager from the Play Store and have it install TWRP for you
Generally speaking, CWM is great on most devices, but for the S3 it's TWRP that's the best and easiest to use
And when flashing new roms, make sure to always format system, it prevents corrupted files from showing up because you would be installing the new system right on top of the old one if you don't
So I did as you suggested. I installed twrp from the play store. I made a backup on there so I should be ready to tryn flash again. The only thing is I use this phone for work all the time and if mess this thing up I'm gonna be in deep doo doo haha. So with the last several attempts failing, I'm a little apprehensive to try again. I'm going to re-odin and flash a different root just to be safe (I used team epic v5). Can you guys recommend a good root to use for my s3?

If you made a nandroid backup in TWRP (I'd recommend to put it on the external memory, but that's just me), you should be good to try any ROM you want (only Sprint ROMS). Just follow CNexus's post (linked for posterity). Wipe system as well as factory reset, cache, and dalvik, prior to installing the ROM.

If you've already rooted, re-rooting isn't going to fix anything, so no need to go there.
As previously explained and detailed, do a full system wipe, and you'll be good to go.
Thank you guys so much for your very quick responses, thank you for bearing with my noobishness too haha. I am going to tryn reflash jellybomb tonight, I'll post on this thread how it goes (hopefully good).
So unfortunately it was the same result with the TWRP. Tryed doing it with a few different roms. Some roms will boot to the "Galaxy s III" logo and others like jellbomb wont even get that far. It just flashed the Samsung logo and that was it. It's gotta be something simple that im missing here, but I can't figure out what it is. On the jellybomb install afterwards TWRP did come up with a message that said something along the lines of: your phone doesn't appear to be rooted, would like to install bla bla bla. So that doesn't make sense, because I know that I do have root access. Feeling pretty frustrated because I'm doing everything the correct way. HELP!

It took me like 4-5 months to personally figure out that the problem was the kernel. You need to flash a kernel right after you flash the ROM. Either the stock kernels or better kernels like Anthrax will do. I know that for jellybomb, there's a kernel included in the Rom but for some reason,it got stuck on the gs 3 logo if I didn't flash another kernel.
Oh thank goodness there is something else I can try, I was out of ideas. Thank you!

I tryed the KT47 AOSP Jellbean kernel after flashing jelly bomb and it did the same thing it did before, black screen after flashing the samsung logo
Now I did go into fix permissions and it did say failed, is that abnormal?
This is my exact procces:
1. boot into TWRP
2. factory reset
3. system wipe
4. cache wipe
5. Dalvik wipe
6. Install from external SD: jellybomb v14
7. Wipe cache/Dalvik
8. Install Kt47 kernel
9. Wipe cache/Dalvik
Anything wrong there?
