ok, i have lots or large high res backgrounds for my phone. all are jpgs. whenever i set them as backgrounds on the evo the image quality is severely degraded. its almost like changing from a 16mil color jpg to a 256 color bmp. whats the deal with this?
Probably because the EVO isn't a 1080p device. It's 480x800. 960x800 is the resolution you should be using for wallpapers. Downsize them first on your computer using Photoshop or something similar, to preserve the quality as much as possible.
resizing the images to 960x800 and keeping the aspect ratio actually makes the images look worse. im thinking its more of a cm6 problem. it does not do this with any sense based rom.
And I'm thinking it's an issue of one of your apps, or whatever app you're using to downsize, as nobody else has issues with wallpapers on CM6.

Hey!
I just have a little issue here. When im choosing a custom photo or image as background, it tends to get lower color than original. The gradiends gets really ugly. This dosent apply for HTC original walls thou.
I tried with both JPG and PNGs (8/16 bits).
The screen is able to show 16mil colors so my guess that the croptool is converting the image somehow.
Does anyone know another app that is able to set wallpaper wihtout the built in cropper?
A few examples:

(copy/paste...still cant post links)
I love the brilliant screen ! Looking for some high quality background that can match the PQ of the stock photos.
Try flikie hd wallpapers from the market

That's nice but the problem is Android has that wallpaper scrolling feature so it needs a wide image, not a tall narrow (WVGA) one.
For a Samsung Epic you actually want a 960x800 image. Of course anything that is at least that large in both dimensions should work, you'll just have to crop it. So 1280x800 (a common size) is fine as long as you don't mind cropping off parts of the sides. 1024x1024 iPad wallpapers should also work great, and again that expands the range of wallpapers available to you.
You can search Google for 960x800 as well as 960x854 (Moto Droid resolution). I also like InterfaceLift for wallpapers, some really nice looking landscapes and stuff there. Available in a lot of sizes - just get anything that is at least 960x800. The smallest images available at InterfaceLift that are bigger than 960x800 are the 1024x1024 iPad ones.
I searched for this and only found information on other phones...
What is the exact wallpaper resolution size for the epic. I made a cross and scripture that I set to 480x800 originally which is pretty small. I made it to fit the bootscreen for the modification that Rodderik came up with. Now I wanted to try and make it my wallpaper but it forces me to crop it way too small. I would think the 480x800 would be small enough but it's not. I have no wiggle room so I need the exact resolution that it wants.
Thanks!
***sigh***
980 X 800 in case someone else looks this up.

Wallpaper
So I created a wallpaper at 980X800 which works, however when you flip the phone and get landscape it loses quite a bit of the picture. Is there a trick to this? It doesn't seem to be a problem with most wallpapers.
unless its in a "and I'm likely quoting this wrong" a .9.png fromat it WONT scale right on landscape.. and I'm thinking that a background wont anyway unless there is a mod to the framework.apk
Hmmm... I think you're right. I'll post back with my findings and try to thank you since I can't in the app.
png
So gimp (which people use who theme) does save in png format, but I cannot find the .9 business. I'll test png and see if it helps at all, but I'm sure the .9 format is necessary. You probably have to incorporate two different resolutions into the same file and reference it somehow.
Everyone knows that when you apply a wallpaper with the default Gallery app it crops only a small part of the picture. Hence your wallpaper will most probably look somewhat blurred because it's been scaled up to fit the screen.
The overall resolution of Galaxy Nexus is 720 x 1280
Resolution without the navigation bar is 720 x 1184
Resolution without navbar or notification bar is 720 x 1134
1134 pixel height is huge. Even a 1080p picture would need to be scaled up a few pixels. But because Gallery crops at least 10% off both edges the original picture would need to be much higher than just 1134 pixels to have no upscaling and quality loss.
So I was wondering if anyone knows what is the exact size the picture should be to get no scaling at all when applying a wallpaper?
I know I could use 3rd party apps to avoid cropping but I'd like to know how to do this with the default app.
I do believe that (according to many sources, like some wallpaper threads in this forum) the proper size is 1440x1280. Almost all wallpapers that are found in the Themes and Apps section are already resized to this size to fit your nexus.
EDIT: I forgot to add that in order to use the whole image, drag the cropping square to fill up the whole image when you're using the size I mentioned above. That would guarantee no upscaling.

If you follow previous pattern for wallpaper this should be correct. There's also a ton of high res wallpaper sites that have higher res images. Don't think only in 1080p, ton of PC users are on 2560x1600.
hi, i have a picture size 2835x1417 and when i'm setting it like wallpaper it take a little part of it, but i want larger.. so, what is maximum?

I think I know what you're trying to say because I'm having the same problem...
It used to be that when you cropped up an image for the wallpaper that you could select the full height of the image to the actual height of the screen. But now the crop tool uses two image frames where the tallest one is for the lockscreen (I think) and the wide one is for the scrolling wallpaper. This means that you can't use the full height of the image for the scrolling wallpaper so with many images you end up zooming in on them and they either look blurry, or you can't actually get the whole image in there, cropping off the top and bottom.
I want to know if there's any apps that will allow you to crop to full height and therefore actually use a widescreen wallpaper at it's proper resolution as your scrolling wallpaper...
For a scrollable wallpaper the max resolution for One X is 1440x1280 if i'm right. Then it looks perfectly on home screen and on lock screen.I've tried also with Full HD wallpapers but it's blurry and it looks really bad,so try 1440x1280 and you should be satisfied :fingers-crossed:
Cheers
