Hi! I have rooted two friends phones with the 1-click root method 3.21. I want to know if they want to update his phones using the official Sprint OTA update, they will lose or not their root?
I have been reading on the forum, I understood that they loose the SuperUser application, but they can install it back on the market and everything is fine again. Is that true?
There is any other trusted process for updating their phone?
In their case, they just want to have it stock with root and that's it....
I rooted mine with the long process before the 1 click root and I am using the fresh rom, with all the latest updates for WiMax, PRI, PRL and Radio.
Thanks in advance.
I used this to do the OTA 3.29.
You DO loose root, just make sure unrEVOked forever was used so they retain S-Off.
Follow this guide to re root the OTA.

Also, from personal experience, SuperUser needs to be flashed, not just downloaded from the market.

The last two times I have tried to install the latest update (2.2 I believe) to my EVO, it has downloaded just fine but then seems to crash when it tries to do the actual install.
What I get is a screen showing the little green android next to an oblique triangle with an exclamation point in it. Everything stops at that point.
I have previously rooted the phone (no nand though) so I could install the android wireless tether, etc. Other than that though, I have not done too much with the phone. It's been running fine, so I have no idea what may be causing the new OTA update to crash.
(I've heard there have been some problems with the update and I really do want to be able to re-root the phone after the fact, if that could be a problem..so as far as that goes I'm in no hurry.)
Still, does anyone have any idea what might cause the latest update to crash? Should I perhaps manually copy it to my SD card and try running it from there?
Thanks,
JTT
You probably have a custom recovery so you can't OTA
OP,
You trying to maintain root? Then don't flash the OTA. If you are tryign to get back to stock, then run the 2.2 RUU file. That will wipe your phone and you will get stock - and NO root.
the question is how did you root the phone?....
in the end to keep root its, apply the 1.47 ota update, install unrevoked3, unrevoked forever, install stock recovery, update to 2.2 froyo, install custom recovery, install superuser app, then BAM you are rooted on 2.2

Don't take the 2.2 OTA if you want to maintain root.

never do OTA lol. i learned the hard way.. im stuck on 2.2 without root. you will lose your root if you update ota. just say no man.. just say no
android 2.2 help
so is there anyway to root 2.2 ota update i wanna root my phone!!!
I recently started getting system update notices for 3.26.605.1 on my D-Inc.
I'm running the "standard" clockworkmod recovery that flashed when I rooted the phone. As I understand it, I can not install the update because I'm rooted so is there a way that I can stop the notices (without unrooting and going stock)?
I've also read chatter on other forums about a fix or "root version" on the way from unrevoked, but I haven't been able to find anything official.
Can anyone confirm an update from unrevoked?
Thanks.
You will lose root when you install the update but you will still have S-OFF so you will be able to flash custom ROMs still. You could just flash a custom ROM and can achieve root that way.
If you like to run stock ROM then you have to wait or you'll lose root. unrevoked is working on an update but it is not released as of right now.
If you prefer stock you could simply try ROMs that are very similar to stock for example Virtuous, that way you won't have to worry about this again.
RE: OTA system update 3.26.605.1
UnrEVOked has a 3.22 vervion out now. Is that the update you were referring to?
If so, how do I go about installing it?
Instructions for applying the update, re-rooting, and re-installing SU ONLY if you have S-OFF.
Read the instructions, and the warnings. Take all precautionary measures.
Although I took a Titanium backup of everything, I did not have to restore anything. Nothing was "wiped".
I have a rooted evo and I want to update to 3.70, but that would mean loosing my root adn well it doesn't work! What is the best way to update my phone without having to re install everything? I used unrevoked to root it last time, is there an easy way to do this again.

Look into MikFroyo. It is a stock sense without all the sprint bloatware. It already updated to 3.70 fully rooted.

I've learned that with each update released, that rom you are using will release a new build of that rom with the update incorporated into it. Then you just need to update your radios and PRI to match it and you will be good to go.
Okay so it looks like the best thing to do is to reload, so if I do that will I need to reconfigure all my stuff? I am using launcher Pro, so I don't want to re do all that configuration. If I use a tool like Titanium back up can I then restore and have all the config done? Could someone give me a guide on how to do this update correctly, the last time I did this it was one file no radio update required. thanks

this is what I did I flashed the latest unrevoked forever then i ruu'd back to stock this still left me with s-off then i took the update let if run and got all the radios and such after that i downloaded xHausx current auto root extracted the files in the res folder there is a file called PC36IMG_Amon Ra 2.1.1 placed it on the root of my SD card renamed it PC36IMG and flashed and viola i had custom recovery from there i just restored a nandroid and i was updated and rooted
So Gingerbread OTA is comming up, I reacently Rooted using Unrevoked3 method and have S-OFF. Stock ROM as I am not 100% on how to flash a new ROM to my phone (evo 4g). I was wondering if I can accept the OTA 2.3 update to my phone without un rooting. I am cunfused about wether my phone's root is permanent, and if that would applie to the upcomming OTA update.
From what I can gather from the UNREVOKED site, root will be permanent. Will this mean my phone will not accept the OTA and error? Will my phone accept the OTA but loose root? Or will my phone accept the Gingerbread OTA, and still keep root, so that I can continue to use my wifi tether.
I read the info as I should be able to accept the OTA and keep root. But I am a noob. Can some one clarify and explain?
Idk if you would have to unroot the device, but if u upgrade ota u will lose root
I don't think you'd lose S-OFF, but you would lose "root" in the sense that the OTA rom won't have the superuser (su) application in it. So you'd need to flash something to get it back. Don't accept the OTA. Usually rooted versions of the OTA get posted here quickly -- often even before the OTA pushes to all devices.
Don't except the OTA when it happens. You will loose root and it may be few before there is a working root method on 2.3. Wait for someone on here to put out a rooted version to flash.

Do NOT take the ota if you are rooted. Nobody knows what will happen with each release, but its possible your phone could lose root permanently or even be bricked. When the OTA comes out, wait a day or so and somebody should put up a stock rooted rom on here. DOwnload that and flash it. If you dont know how to flash a rom, there are tons of guides on here.
So no OTA. Pretty much clarifys that. Now I have to figure out how to upload a Rom. Is it as easy as uploading a psx rom?

I want the new update on my EVO.. it is rooted with Unrevoked or revoked..
When I run the OTA update it goes to the screen with the android and a Triangle with an ! in it..
What do I need to do to get the new update?
Here are 3 scenarios that will help you out:
1. You can unroot by running an RUU, take the update, and lose root user access. There is currently no method to attain root user access on the new OTA update.
2. *IF you performed a root method in which you flashed UNREVOKED FOREVER - You can unroot, accept the OTA update, flash AmonRa PC36IMG.zip and still retain root user access
3. You can manually update the radios, wimax, etc; and then flash the STOCK root version of the OTA update from the dev section.
Good luck, and ask any questions you need.
You are already rooted so the easiest way to get the new update is to flash a rom based on the new update. I personally use fresh 4.1.1, but there are tons of options to chose from.
You have gotten great suggestions and help above and my suggestion would be before going any further do alot more research. There is a lot of helpful information in here but none of it will help you at all if you dont read it.
I believe your best route is to go with the thoughts of the second posters scenarios and good luck. Have fun with your Evo but read OP's and stickies because in all honesty you could of been updated your new radios and rom within 20 minutes if you were already rooted.
Stock Rom - all the info can be found in his OP
i was android 2.2 then installed kings rom and it out me to 2.3.3
Can someone elaborate a bit on this point:
2. *IF you performed a root method in which you flashed UNREVOKED FOREVER - You can unroot, accept the OTA update, flash AmonRa PC36IMG.zip and still retain root user access
Not sure what I used but I suspect unrevoked forever but I"m not sure. When i tried grabbing the OTA, i wound up in a recovery screen I think. Can I disable root from in there, grab the OTA, and then download this AmonRa or should I just apply an image already floating around? Someone suggested Fresh 4.1.1
@joeynuggetz
Im not sure how to step back out from the recovery after trying ota, but I WILL say, to all who care about keeping root, just use one of the roms in the dev section that is stock with root. There are a few.
But yes, as was said earlier, if you used unrevoked forever (and only you know), from what I've read you can take ota, then reapply amonRA using the pc36img. (Im only reiterating what has already been suggested)
