Hi there, so I've just got my Desire a few weeks ago and all's been great, except there's a few things bugging me. My first thing is the goddamn keyboard! Now, it's a great keyboard, but I hate how the settings button is next to the comma key. Whenever I want to type a comma, I usually accidentally bring up the settings screen. Is there a way to remove that key? Or a good 3rd party keyboard that doesn't have it?
Second, whenever I try to scroll upwards through my texts, it seems to want to snap back down to the bottom. This isn't that big a deal, but it makes it hard for me to check through old texts sometimes. Is there a fix for that?
Settings button
On my Desire I have the language switching button next to the comma. It might be because I marked two languages under keyboard settings.
I'd guess pressing the language switch causes less of a problem, because you can quickly press it again to switch back to "EN". And it might even come handy to have an alternative language at hand (such as spanish, french or german if you ever need to type some words in them)
I don't seem to have the option to even do that. I'm on a Telus Desire with the 2.1 firmware.
Another thing that bugs me as well is that sometimes if someone texts me within a minute of me sending my last text, I don't get notified of it, even if my phone was locked.

Ok, I've had my TP2 for a couple of weeks now and I love it, but there are a few things I wanna get addressed and possibly fixed.
First things first, my phone was originally bought brand new from Verizon. It is now fully flashed to CricKet.
The first thing I wanna know is if there is a way to disable the built in HTC messaging interface. I'm fine with the older style of messaging (like that of the TouchPro 1). The HTC messaging seems slow and sluggish, and aside from accidentally clicking on the text message, I never use it. (Pics 1-4)
Secondly. After texting a message and pressing send, if I hit OK at the top right hand corner, it goes out and back to all my messages and usually hangs for about 40 seconds before I can do anything. Nothing will work. If I hit the end/home hard key, it will just beep, light up, but do nothing. I know when it hangs because it leaves a small part of the message at the top. (See top of pic 5)
Lastly. If I have my phone at the home screen and I get a text message my keyboard opens up on the home screen. Is there a fix or setting for this? Yes, I do have Swype (from the OmniaII), but this was a problem before swype, so I have eliminated Swype as a culprit. (See pic 6)
Oh and I'm running windows 6.5 professional
anyone? help?
This cab may disable the HTC SMS module for you...there's a couple of cabs that can do that (some work with some ROMs), this is the only one I happen to have handy. If it doesn't work for you, you can find others just by searching "disable HTC sms cab"
The attached worked for my keyboard, but mine was only appearing in txt messages, not on the home screen like yours.
I experience that same text at the top of the screen, but mine only lasts for seconds at most. I just reset my phone a couple days back so I only have a couple hundred messages, but even with a couple months worth I never had to wait that long. What are your running ram %s?
Whats the exact ROM you are using?
My Tilt 2 and my girlfriend's Tilt 2 suffer from the same issue. About 25% of the time when we open a text message, our phones do not scroll down to the most recent message nor give us a cursor so we can start typing a reply.
You have to manually scroll down to the typing area and manually click in the blank space, and even then, when you start typing and get to the end of a line, instead of automatically dropping down to the next line, the phone inexplicably scrolls back up to an older message. You then have to scroll back down and click in the typing area where your message was cut off to resume typing, but each time you get to the end of a line, it scrolls back up again. Using the task manager to close the sms application fixes the problem, but it reoccurs about one out of every four text messages we receive. I have applied both of the hotfixes, the sms patch and the caller id patch.
It's so much of an annoyance, she, being a bigger texter than I, hates the phone. If anyone else has had this issue, do any of the extant cooked roms fix the issue? We are both using the stock At&T Rom minus the crud.
sounds like it could be a case of the different programs interfering with each other. install one by one and see if that makes a difference, you might come to realize something. If you want to just uninstall those programs you should use an advanced uninstaller like TMS or SK Tools to make sure you change the registry settings.
I'd really suggest grabbing a visual kitchen and making your own custom ROM. It is really simple and in my case has been the most stable and quickest ROM i've used to date.
thats just the Windows Mobile messaging... its horrible, they should make a new one lol, Like Handcent SMS for android, that is like THE best texting app. but about the issue, it sounds like you just need to purge your SMS, I do it once a week, but I also do a PIM backup before so, just incase
I do.
I purge it every day. I delete everything, and then I empty out the deleted messages if that's what you mean. It pisses me off. Her phone has virtually nothing on it. It's completely stock. I know there isn't anything interfering with it.
same problem here.
No solution here, but I can more further identify the problem....
Does this seem accurate?
When I select a text message from the message inbox, it displays the message just like a normal reply window with the keyboard at the bottom, but then takes a second or so and then the keyboard hides and the message is displayed full screen and the reply area with the cursor loses focus. Then I have to click in the reply box at the bottom at which point the keyboard has to pop up again and resize the message. The action is as if I have touched the message itself which would of course expand the message and minimize the keyboard.
I was originally thinking it is a left-over phantom touch from the previous screen but that has been ruled out. Maybe this is a timing issue in the registry? It doesn't seem like it. It happens with every new message that you want to reply to. I'm at a total loss, but very annoyed by this. The email section works fine. I see a list of messages, I select one, if I choose to reply, the message pops up and the cursor appears inline right where I should type and the keyboard pops up at the same time. Once I have replied to a message, even if I reboot the phone, if I go back to a message I have replied to the keyboard is already up with the cursor focused in the reply box. I don't know why it doesn't do this when a new message comes in. Maybe it thinks you need more space to read the message, but this is silly considering text messages are usually very short….ie Short Messaging Service…
I saw someone else post that this is just sucky windows messaging. Well, it didn't do this on my Treo 750 with WM6.1. But there I had a regular keyboard, not a software keyboard on a touch screen.
So my guess is that something in the messaging system may be looking for the hardware keyboard and assuming we have it open and displaying the messages full screen.
So what I think we really need to ask is if there is a way to force the keyboard to just be open and put the cursor focus in the reply box when I open a new text message by default?
Alternatively, is there a messaging replacement that eliminates this problem?
Hello people,
I have a problem when texting with my desire and it's this annoying i think of selling it if no-one has a solution for this.
The problem is when typing a textmessage to someone. When i have like a bigger conversation (in the way that you have to scroll up to see the first textmessage of the conversation) and i'm busy typing the message, the phone would suddenly jump up to the very top of the conversation. The keyboard dissappears and i have to manually scroll down the whole conversation again to be back at the screen where i was writing the message in to continue typing.
It's very annoying and sometime's it happens like 3 times typing one textmessage.
If the conversation is rather big (take 200 textmessages) i'm more busy scrolling than typing. Quite silly for a highend phone.
I flashed, flashed, flashed, full wiped everything over again and the problem just doesn't disappear.
Someone noticed this too?
I also suffer from this annoying issue from time to time. It would be great if somebody could help us!

Since Froyo/Android 2.2;
Sometimes when writing SMS, the typing window can disappear and the display zooms all the way up to the very first message to that contact.
You could scroll back down endlessly of course, but instead just turn the phone to change the screen orientation and you'll get straight back to the text entry window.
SOMEtimes even that doesn't work, in which case menu/add subject. That'll get you back to the text entry window for sure. (Obviously don't actually enter a subject or it'll change the message to an MMS)

Also you can just hold down the Menu button and it will open the keyboard and go back to the bottom of the messages

I'm using a swedish version of desire-z and sometimes (too often) the phone decides that i'm trying to write capital letters when i'm using the swedish letters Å Ä and Ö. This even happens in the middle of words and the only way to type small letters is by using the software kwyboard. The shift button does nothing.
This is really starting to bug me! Does anyone have a solution?
If so please let me know.
Thanks!

I think those letters can only be used in upper case with the keyboard. There is some info in the dev section.

That is not true. I have the nordic version myself, but I am not experiencing the same issue as lugiber Mine works both in upper case at the beginning of words, and in the middle of a text in lower case
Edit: Lugiber: Does it happen with all the extra letters, or just some of them?
Yes, my mistake. I have re-read the thread in the dev section myself.
Looks like it is a bug at the moment, but shutting and re-opening the keyboard helps??

Ah, didn't know that opening and closing the hardware keyboard fixed the issue. Thanks for the tip! It's still annoying that i have to do this just for the simplest functionality on my phone! Hope the fix will come soon.
(Btw if someone is thinking of buying swiftkey don't do it until a fix has been released becase it will cause åä and ö to constantly be capital letters.)
Crap! I really love this phone, too bad htc didn't have sense enough to beta test the phone enough before the release.
But if they did i guess the wait would have been even longer. And that wouldn't have been fun!

I have no idea. I never write in Danish or Norwegan so those button pretty much stay untouched. Sorry!

I had the same problem with my DZ in the beginning, and traced the problem down to language selection of the keyboard!
Try to slide out the keyboard and watch two letters pop up in the notification bar - for mine it was EN, and figurated out that it was set to english! After I changed it to Danish, the problem went away! Soo kool...

I noticed that the first day I used the DZ, and changed it... maybe thats why I havent experienced the same problem as TS
Strange - I have a nordic Z also and my danish letters is upper case also sometimes..
I have set my keyboard to danish and T9 (guessing words..).
Either we need to play around more with the language settings or there is a bug...
Hmm, strange. I have set my keyboard to swedish and still experience the issue. Hope there is a bug fix for this soon. I don't want to wear out my keyboard hinges just yet.

One solution is select STOCK virtual QWERTY as default input method. That way the bug goes away. Installing any 3rd party virtual keyboard will cause the bug.

I have the same problem, and unfortunately this didn't solve it. :-(

works on touch
mine works fine if i use the default "Touch input" keyboard, but doesn't work on any other keyboard i have tried. So far only tested "Scandinavian keyboard" and "Smart Keyboard pro".
The fact that it does work consistently (without having to open/close the hardware keyboard) with the default keyboard but not in any other, makes me think that the keyboard sends the code for a capital letter and probably sends some correction info along that the default keyboard listens to but the others ignore... just my guess, i really have no experience with how the keyboards work in android...
I have investigated this CAPS nordic problem too. I have found few ways to generate the situation. It appears to generate caps when you haven't activated textfield by tapping it. For example when you write two sms messages in a row. At the first message you tap the textfield to active it and write the message. After sending the first message the text field is allready "active" (cursor blinking there). And if you start to write immediately without closing keyboard or tapping text field it generates only capital nordic letters. Then if you tap the textfield to really activate it again then the capital nordic letters are gone.
I'm not sure if this is the only problem with this CAPS thing but that is easy way to generate it. I think there might be few other situations where CAPS problem exists because sometimes pressing menu -key twice (open and close menu) caps problem disappears but sometimes not. Then sometimes it disappears when closing and opening the keyboard sometimes not. Best results I have had with tapping text field from screen to activate it.
I have informed HTC Support for this matter but all I have got back is: Hard reset your device. I have once done that but it doesn't help either.

My experience is slighty different from this one.. But if i write a SMS with HW keyboard, send it and exit the sms thread iam in and go to a new one and write there, the cap letters will be there.. This is if i use the HW keyboard during this .. If i then close the HW keyboard and pull it out again they are gone!

I think it is the same situation. When you don't close the HW keyboard and you go to writing text without activating text box by tapping screen you get capital nordic letters.
I got reply from HTC Support from England that they are not aware of that problem (after few replys where I explained the situation) and they gave me Norwegian support phone number, but because of costs to phone there I'll asked if they could give me an email address. Plus I can then get some documentation about what have been discussed even if support person changes. I hope we soon get official fix for this.
I've had the phone for about a month now and I didn't have the problem until recently. The Swype word choice box comes up even when I'm single tapping the letters. I tried turning off the word choice menu settings but it still pops up. Did I press something? Cuz I like it when I swype but if I want to speak in my native language I don't want it poping up and switching my words. Thank you.
Sounds like you've got "word prediction" turned on in swype settings.
