A full wipe, in preparation to flash a new rom would consist of wiping:
data/factory reset
cache
dalvik cache
boot
system
I always wipe everything 2 or 3 times. I also flash Calkulin's Format All after wiping all of the above. That might be overkill, but it makes me feel better before I flash a rom, lol. You get a completely clean start.

What would happen if i wiped everything and rebooted? not that i wanna try it or anything just curious
My definition of a full wipe using amon RA is EVERYTHING in the wipe menu except the SD card and when I flash a different rom, I wipe everything on that list with the exception of the card itself. Technically speaking, however, the list that k2buckley posted is correct.

If you tried to boot after wiping what I mentioned, you will either hang at the splash screen or it will boot you right to fastboot (not sure really though, as I've never tried, but it wouldn't boot, for sure). Since it wipes system and boot image, there would be nothing installed for you to boot into. Btw, I would avoid trying that lol.

That's crazy. Wiping everything like that is over kill. No need to wipe data as its all the apps that uve downloaded from the market. The only ones really needed are dalvik, cache, boot, and system. And I've only ever had to do it one time then flash a rom and it works everytime plus I have all my data and apps there still

He asked what a FULL wipe was. Not if it was necessary or required. And not wiping data when going from one rom to a different one (not an update of the same rom, but to a totally different rom) has ALWAYS left me with weird issues, such as wake locks, cm Widgets on salvage mod, reboots etc.
Oh well, we all have our own methods and rituals for flashing, lol. I will stick to my methods, and everyone else can use theirs.

It may very well be overkill, however, that is my method and it has served me well and has saved me a great deal of unnecessary troubleshooting. But hey, to each his or her own, right? Take care and enjoy the rest of your night....

I agree as well; I only restore my apps with data and my launcher settings, [person preference].

I'm guessing u know this but have u ever looked at ur data folder with root exployer or what ever. The app folder might have 5-6 apps in it and the app-private folder holds the apps u dl from market. So wiping it in recovery makes little sense. I've flashed plenty of different roms without wiping data and never had a problem. Plus on an upnote all ihave to do is flash the roms and gapps if needed and restart and that's it. No need to sit there for an hour restoring apps or settings

I believe you and don't have a problem with you doing it that way, however, like you, I, too, have flashed a great deal of roms and my method has also served me well. It is not wrong for me to use my method. It's just a matter of preference and nothing more.

Starting to hate gb ota. System keeps closing sense after using one or two apps. It's pissing me off, anyone else have this or know any fixes? Thanks.
End of line.
Have you tried clearing cache/dalvik And fix apk mismatched in recovery? And I would clear apps' caches
Other than that, Titanium Backup and do a full wipe and go to a dev's ROM, like Steel's or TI-X or Fresh which are based off the OTA and enjoy some nice extra features.

In Amon Ra recovery, select 'other'. Then choose 'fix uid apk mismatches' (it's something close to that, there's only one or two options in the 'other' section. you'll see it)
Which OTA rom are you currently using?

Just for fun, try clearing cache/dalvik. That seems to solve a lot of issues for me.

Iam running myn's warm rls5. I want to change my fonts and iam not sure if i need to wipe cache, data and dalvik before i flash this new font. It says to "flash these just like how you flash roms" but it dont say anything about wiping.
just the dalvik and cache, piece of cake.
just a heads up, but some of them will cause bootloops and i haven't figured out how to tell yet. For instance, "fontin" worked on every sense 2.2 but bootloops aosp 2.3. make a backup
So why only the cach and dalvik and not the data. Can anybody tell me what each thing does and why you need to wipe. Thanks!

no you do not have to wipe anything. Just flash and enjoy
Iam confused now. Someone is saying to wipe and the other is saying not too. Is there a forum that explains it.

Theoretically you don't have to wipe anything when flashing a font because all it does is change a few files in the font folder. However, I always wipe cache and dalvik when flashing any mod just to be on the safe side.

And always backup before flashing as said before. If everything is fine after flashing then you can just delete that nandroid if you want to free up memory on your sd. But like stated, it doesn't matter what you are flashing, things may not always go right.

And never wipe data unless you're flashing a rom. Wiping data will wipe all of your apps & such. When flashing themes, kernels, mods, fonts, apps, etc only wipe cache & dalvik cache.
Ok...i understand now. Iam guna backup then wipe cache and delvik before i flash. Thanks to everyone who replied back.

You do not need to wipe anything for fonts, i never have. I flashed font only from this thread below. Flash till you find the one you like...

First off I love this ROM great work and kudos tot he devs. Although recently as last night my launcher will not load for some reason. I have completely powered off the phone and rebooted, but when the phone reboots you can see the notification bar and my wallpaper but that's it, the device is completely unresponsive. Calls come in but no way to answer them Any ideas?

Boot into recovery and select wipe. That's assuming you're using Amon Ra recovery. If you're using CWM for some reason then boot into recovery and then select wipe then wipe cache, then go back, then go into advanced and wipe dalvik.

Im running Amon Ra and i just completed those steps and rebooted, still same issue.
The only change that was made to the system was I uninstalled Slacker Radio last evening.
What launcher are you using ? Sorry for the long wait. I can't believe nobody else has tried to help you. If that didn't help then my next suggestion would be to just backup everything with the app of your choice then re-flash the rom. I like to try to fix the problem before I just re-flash though, just in case it happens again then you know how to fix it.
Hey guys (or girls) I just had a quick concern about nandroid backups and restores... When I do a backup of the current state of my phone, and I'm running flawlessly on a rom. If I happen to try a different rom and don't like it so I choose to restore to that certain backup. Will there be any problems like force closes or apps acting up all weird? Sorry guys just never actually have done a restore of a nandroid.
I've never had any problems. I always wipe says, cache, and delvik cache before restoring a back up though.

yea i literally backed up everything via titanium backup just in case and anything dealing with flashing and or using adb i do a nanodroid just in case
I always forget to wipe dalvik and cache but I've never had any problems. The first time I installed Blazer ROM 3.5 though it would always force close when I flashed the ICS theme but not the regular. Somehow it was fixed when I DIDN'T wipe cache/dalvik even though the instructions said to. But I'm noob too so I have no idea
