Un-rooting and Installing 3.29.651.5 - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Currently, my phone is rooted using unrEVOked 3.21. I wanted to uninstall bloatware, so I had researched what was safe to remove... well apparently I removed more than I could, or it's a different issue, because the newest OTA update wont complete.
I get the "Triangle Exclamation Point" screen, and says it can't find Flickr...
I'm curious... what is the best way to do this?
-Should I Un-Root to the stock 2.2 that came on my phone... then update to the newest OTA, then re-root?
-Or is it possible to just Un-Root and update straight to 3.29.651.5 in one step, and then Re-Root?
Thanks for your help =]

I had the same problem, ota wont work if ur missing any stock apps so u need to unroot then flash pc36img, install ur ota then reroot, finaly make a nand with everything stock and up to date to go back to for the next round of ota..also instead of deleting stock apps u could rename them to whatever.apk.old or move them to sdcard or desktop for safe keeping, hope thos helps im still quite noobish myself

Can you not just run the update.zip and update it over whatever you got going on?

Not if ur missing any stock apps like all the sprint stuff, the update wont fly

Yeah, fun stuff haha =P. I ended up finding a PC36IMG of the newest OTA, so I just flashed that, then re-rooted... worked like a charm actually. I coudn't find a PC36IMG of the newest OTA before, so I didn't know what to do. The .old tip is a keeper, will be using that, thanks.

Welcome, i keep a copy of the img on my computer for safe keeping make sure to rename it if u want to keep the copy on ur sdcard otherwise it will auto run on every reboot

[Q] Problems doing the lastest OTA update?

The last two times I have tried to install the latest update (2.2 I believe) to my EVO, it has downloaded just fine but then seems to crash when it tries to do the actual install.
What I get is a screen showing the little green android next to an oblique triangle with an exclamation point in it. Everything stops at that point.
I have previously rooted the phone (no nand though) so I could install the android wireless tether, etc. Other than that though, I have not done too much with the phone. It's been running fine, so I have no idea what may be causing the new OTA update to crash.
(I've heard there have been some problems with the update and I really do want to be able to re-root the phone after the fact, if that could be a problem..so as far as that goes I'm in no hurry.)
Still, does anyone have any idea what might cause the latest update to crash? Should I perhaps manually copy it to my SD card and try running it from there?
Thanks,
JTT
You probably have a custom recovery so you can't OTA
OP,
You trying to maintain root? Then don't flash the OTA. If you are tryign to get back to stock, then run the 2.2 RUU file. That will wipe your phone and you will get stock - and NO root.
the question is how did you root the phone?....
in the end to keep root its, apply the 1.47 ota update, install unrevoked3, unrevoked forever, install stock recovery, update to 2.2 froyo, install custom recovery, install superuser app, then BAM you are rooted on 2.2

[Q] 3.70 update help

I have a rooted evo and I want to update to 3.70, but that would mean loosing my root adn well it doesn't work! What is the best way to update my phone without having to re install everything? I used unrevoked to root it last time, is there an easy way to do this again.

Look into MikFroyo. It is a stock sense without all the sprint bloatware. It already updated to 3.70 fully rooted.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=883026
I've learned that with each update released, that rom you are using will release a new build of that rom with the update incorporated into it. Then you just need to update your radios and PRI to match it and you will be good to go.
Okay so it looks like the best thing to do is to reload, so if I do that will I need to reconfigure all my stuff? I am using launcher Pro, so I don't want to re do all that configuration. If I use a tool like Titanium back up can I then restore and have all the config done? Could someone give me a guide on how to do this update correctly, the last time I did this it was one file no radio update required. thanks

[Q] 2.3 ota + root

ok my friend made me root his evo so he can tether while he went on vacation like 2 months ago. now he doesn't care if he is rooted or not and since the update is coming i figured i should ask this.
ok so ive googled, googled, and googled some more and i can't find a straitup f***ing answer to this. since my friend is rooted but still on the stock rom, if he accepts the 2.3 ots will he:
1. loose root and be stock on stock 2.3 rom
2. turn his pretty little evo into a fancy paper weight
just give me a 1 or 2 as a comment so i know whether or not to have him drive over and make me unroot it for him since he lives kinda far away and doesn't come often...
1. Lose root and be on 2.3

^This guy.
But I am a bit confused myself. What exactly is edited in the android system so that we have root access?
If he's removed any system apps, he won't be able to accept the OTA. I've never personally had this problem because I've never tried, but I have heard of others experiencing issues.

he didn't delete any of the apps so...
Yeah but does he have a custom recovery? If he has cwm or amon ra I don't think the ota will flash.
if you cant live large, look big in the coffin!!!
Completely stock , accept the ota and loose root will be the only issue. Only if everything is untouched, no frozen apps or anything. Just tell him to sync his contacts and what not prior to.
UnrEVOked has some info on un-rooting and going back to RUU. I believe it's on their forever root page for EVO. Basically (don't quote me) they recommend getting a older stock Rom and flashing that before update.
Also you could go back to the nandroid you did of his stock setup... (you did a nandroid right?!) And then update which will cause you to lose root.

His phone is bone stock except for root and amon recovery. No frozen apps no custom rom. So he should be fine?

He'll be fine. He's just going to lose root and custom recovery.
A system upgrade is like a Windows upgrade. Totally reformats and installs the OS
Ok thanks

Does the same apply if I have a custom kernel installed?
There have been cases where people have bricked their phones doing an OTA. Since a lot of things change and vary between ROMs, it is best to just unroot, and then accept the OTA.
Or, simply wait a day or two, someone will have a rooted version of the new OTA posted over in the development threads. Problems solved and avoided
the update will probably fail
i have a question. im on cm7 and i want to try the new gingerbread update, i have unrevoked forever. if i go back to a stock rom and remove my recovery can i get the ota?
You need to go back to stock recovery and you can get the OTA, as far as losing root, I had unrevoked forever and I was able to just flash a new recovery after it was done and I was fine. It didnt reformat anything nor will they have an update that reformats your data. I still had superuser installed. I tested this on 3.3 OTA back in the day, but there is no telling what HTC will do with each update. Now I use custom roms and just wait for my favorite devs the incorporate it into the rom. Best bet is to wait till the rooted update is on the forums and install that.

So, what you're saying is that, if you get your phone back to how it was when you bought it and first took it out of the box, factory setup, can you get the official factory release for updating your factory set phone to the new factory released update??
Did you SERIOUSLY just ask that????

4.53.651.1 install after revolutionary

Anyone else trying to update stock to 4.53.651.1 but it fails to install? If you take the ota after revolutionarys unlock I can not install the update. I believe this is due to the hboot version. Which seems to be how they got around the locking in he first place.
Also where is the ota on the phone? I want to pull it off the phone and try a re ruu and install it again.

Have you checked Development section for the latest stock rom. Also why would you try to do an OTA after rooting. It may take away your root. Just wait it out or try a custom rom that probably has more than the stock 4.53 rom.
You rooted to get away from stock why go back when you now have options better than stock.
Rooted Stock Roms link here
Getting root back isn't a problem. I want a nandroid backup with the.latest. the original reason for me to root wasn't to run a custom Rom. It was to remove the extra bloatware.
But after being in the EVO for a few months now I am going to play with the other roms. I just wanted to see if the most recent update had any changes worth staying on stock.
I will most likely be going to cm7. Since that's what I have on my craptivate.

ok but still why unroot? Just download a rooted version and if you like remove the bloatware. going back to stock you loose options and gain bloat.
Stock rooted is better than Stock non rooted....all day everyday
The issue is your custom recovery, not custom hboot. Sprint OTAs depend on the stock recovery, which in layman's terms is a "fake" recovery. It can't be used by the user but the recovery knows what to do with the OTA packages.
Look around for a PC36IMG.zip of the stock Sprint recovery.img. I saw one the other day in the Dev section.
And the latest OTA is rootable, just to clear that up.

Oh and to answer your where does it download question...I believe in /data/tmp or /data/local/tmp, but i am not 100% sure. It believe it would be in one of the tmp folders for sure though.

[Q] updaing my evo4g with OTA's and revolutionary

Quick noob question.
I rooted with unrevoked a while back and have been very happy.
Currently:
And. version 2.2
software 3.70.651.1
Hboot: 2.10.0001
Just wanted to update to the most recent OTA as I'm fine with running the stock ROM. Just wanted control over sprint bloatware and free wifi tether.
Do I need revolutionary and do I need to run each update in order or can I simply update via the most recent OTA (rooted OTA of course) and it be all inclusive of the changes throughout the preceeding updates?
Thanks for any help with my basics!

Yeah never except an official ota.
You run the risk of losing root or bricking your precious evo. Its fine to flash an updated rooted ota over your 2.2. Also the official latest updates are apparently a pain in the ass to root (so I'm told).
There a couple devs that are pretty quick at pushing out the rooted ota's in the dev section. Just flash those to keep your control of your sprint bloat and not have the worries of rooting again.

First, do NOT take an OTA if you are rooted, never.
Second, since you are rooted, there is no need to re-root, as long as you update the correct way. Just download a stock rooted rom for the latest ota in the dev section, and flash it like any other rom. That way you stay rooted, and are updated.
that im not sure about that, this will def work just bare with me ill get ya hooked up. put this file (evorec)in your c:
http://db.tt/RFKLNzlS
make sure its not zipped after you dl... open cdm type this in order.
cd\evorec you will get this evorec> then type in this.....
fastboot flash recovery recovery-RA-supersonic-v3.11.img
it will force install recovery .i just tested this 3 times so i know it will work. inside the folder is ra 2.3 and 3.11 img. also the flash command i posted (you must be in fastboot for it to work). if you want to use 2.3 just change the numbers only in the flash command. if for some reason you cant dl the whole evorec file. copy all the contents make a evorec folder yourself and place it in c: follow the steps after that.

Okay, a little late for me as well...in same boat as OP. I currently have it downloaded, when I try to install I get an exclamation in a triangle and a blue android. But, fortunately I can reboot and get back to my set-up. Is there a way to clear the download from my system/status bar?
